No hot water, dust on everything, restaurant leaves door open so flies are all over your food.
People are nice but that is all I can say.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sarah L.Raleigh, NC4893426Mar 14, 2018
My boyfriend and I stayed in Cass this weekend while skiing at Snowshoe. We weren't sure where to get groceries in the area so before heading up to Dollar General we stopped by Bear Creek Lodge since it had a big sign that said GROCERIES across the side of the building and a sign that advertised it had produce, food, etc.
It did not have groceries.
What it did have was a very small selection of expired or about-to-expire camp food. Out of the 4 or 5 cartons of eggs in the fridge, only 1 was before it's sell by date, and that was only by 1 day. The single package of bacon was good until December 2017. Orange juice was a month old. The produce consisted of a single apple, orange, and tomato. Every single package of bread was past its date, and more than one had visible mold. We ended up with eggs (that we later decided not to eat based on the state of everything else at the BCL store), some pancake mix, and a case of Miller Lite.
When we went up to the counter to pay, we weren't entirely sure if it was the right place to pay since no one was acknowledging us even though there were 2 staff right behind the counter. When we asked if this is where we paid, the man rudely said yes and then took his time before he started helping us. While ringing us up, he asked the woman how much the Miller Lite was, and she thought for several seconds before telling him a price. No idea if that was a real price or a made up price or a fair deal because there were no prices anywhere.
There was also a man asleep in the corner, so that was odd.
Long story short, don't let any sign on the outside of BCL fool you into thinking they have any edible food.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - James M.Columbus, OH06May 21, 2017Updated review
this place was not good, AC not working, spiderwebs and dusty in rooms, dirty toilet and poor working shower, the balcony was covered with dead bugs and cobwebs too and the balcony door handle was broken. The pizza we had was ok (the railroad place was closed for the day) we had no other choice unless we drove 10 miles up the road.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 21, 2017Previous reviewThe railroad restaurant was closed by 5:30, so we ate here as we already had a reservation to stay here. The room looked like the picture show above. Except for the cobwebs. The AC DID NOT WORK (this is a week before the opening of the season. No one ever did reply to our request for a room change. the other couple that was there did and found very little relief for the NO ac in either of their rooms. So we opened the door to the balcony (covered in dead bugs and cobwebs) the curtains fell on us several times. The door handle to the balcony door was ready to fall off good thing they had a slide lock for a gate to secure it. The balcony has easy access to the front side for a fire escape and is not secure. A dead june bug greeted us in the corner of the door and the shower was a trickle of low pressure water. Sheets and comforters looked very dusty as did the rest of the room and bathroom. toilet had a ring. For the price it was not worth what we paid but it was late and the cabins at the railroad (no ac either) we already closed too. The Bear Creek restaurant is NOT a great place to eat either, I was confused and was thinking this was the rt66 place at Snowshoe up the road. I was wrong it was a little deli/pizza place inside the convenient store. Really take a picnic with you or get to the railroad place before they close at 5:30.

The lodge has a nice location right next to the Greenbrier River and Cass scenic railroad. I arrived a little after 7 to find a note taped of the door advising me my room number. The lodge has steps only up to the rooms on the second floor, I found the door to be open with my key inside. I was happy they left it open as there is few places to stay nearby.
After entering the room, I couldn't help but notice the temperature, it was 86 degrees inside. I made sure the air conditioning was on, it was.... I tried every possible setting and discovered none of them worked.. thankfully there is a door in the back of the room that I could open to allow a little cooler air in. Unfortunately, the door doesn't have a screen and there are no windows so if you must leave the door open, you will also get to enjoy many bugs and insects joining you in your sweat box. It worth mentioning the door goes out to a public balcony. Myself and the bugs managed to get things down to about 81 degrees before failing asleep... there are no phone numbers anywhere for help with any problems and while the lodge appears to have WiFi , the passcode is nowhere to be found. If you go outside you can connect with the WiFi from the railroad depot.
I believe the beds were clean. The lamp on the nightstand only worked by plugging and unplugging it. The dresser drawers had skittles , gum , and old papers, spread all through them. Any vents (like bathroom/ac are caked with decades of crud. The shower was clean as was the rest of the bathroom.
The TV worked.
In closing, really nice people, nice location, could be a nice place if it had a major cleaning and most importantly, air conditioning.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Tim B.RIVERDALE, MD290314233Dec 29, 2014First to Review
This is no luxurious getaway but this hotel excels at its' purpose. Clean, simple well-managed, close to the slopes, with great homey food and provisions downstairs. Bed's are very comfy and welcoming for a hotel/motel of this sort. Manager is very accommodating and helpful. Yes the phone is down the hall but get over it.
