Asaggio pizza was a great pizza spot in seaport village.

Seaport village in general is one of the places you have to visit while in San Diego.

We had a regular cheese slice and it came hot out of the oven and my girlfriend and i devoured it. It did not compare to the pizza we encountered at the Italian festival but damn it came close.

    Gotta have a slice.

We were walking around Seaport visit our first day in San Diego. My daughter and I were deciding what we wanted to eat for dinner. Every place seemed a bit pricey there. We were looking for something casual. BUT not really fast food. BUT hey you are in a touristy area.
So we decided on a slice of Pizza and to split an Antipasta salad.
We both got a thin sliced pepperoni.
I have to say it was eh..ok..Nothing to write home about. Just a slice of Pepperoni Pizza, oh and the slice was a decent slice, I have had bigger slices for the price however.. at other places. A bit greasy but edible. I think they could put a bit more cheese on it.
But I really enjoyed the antipasta salad. I liked the presentation of it. The Small was pretty big. So happy we split it. For the money it was a decent casual meal by the bay! If that is what you are looking for I say go for it.
    2 slices of pepperoni pizza
    1 small antipasta salad
    2 water bottles
    Just under $20

I wish I could give em negative stars for horrible service.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GO HERE!

they have the absolute worst customer service and have absolutely no regard for their customers.

my friend and i went there and ordered a cheese pizza. dont know how much more easy this could be.  we waited and both heard our number called, so my friend got up to get the pizza. he comes back and says the guy did not cal our number which we both clearly heard. i waited 15 min (after the initial 15 from the time we ordered) and went to the counter since they started called 50, 51, 52 (and we were 35).

i go up there and watch several people go up and get their orders. the guy was meticulous about gettin their ticket with their number on it. so i walked up and asked him where my pizza was. he immediately said that someone already picked it up. i asked him how is it that i still have my ticket in my hand AND my pizza is gone, at which time he promptly walked away.

I walked over to the cash register and asked the guy for a refund. he asked me why, and turned to the guy from the other side who tried to tell me i already picked up my pizza. in spanish, he tells him that someone already got it, and he too bad for me. the guy at the register turns to me and takes the cash out of the register, tosses it on the counter and tells me "here is your refund".

seriously? i hope this place bleeds the owners for millions, then goes under.  i cannot believe how atrociously horrible i was treated, for no apparent reason, other than the sheer incompetence of the people working here.

I really like Seaport Village...and I really wanted to like this place. I'd never had it cuz I'm dirt poor but my bf of the time (now I'm forever alone and hungry) hooked it up one day (woohoo!) The first thing that we wanted to order, they said they couldn't make it because they had run out of one of the meats (fail) So we opted for another pizzal The thing took forever, the tables were dirty and it kind of smells in there. Then when we finally got the pizza it crazy fell apart and well it didn't taste that good. I've been to dirty places and I'm okay with having to wait for good food but this just didn't cut it for me. No kind of apology or anything for not having what we wanted.
No service, no cleanliness, expensive and not so good food = sorry for the bad review :/

Looking for dinner and randomly stopped at Seaport Village.  Pizza sounded good so we tried Asaggio.  Reasonably priced.  The Chicago style pizza we had had a little too much cheese for my taste.  Both the pizza and the breadsticks had great flavor.  They made a presentation out of the breadsticks instead of just putting them on a plate or in a basket.

It is someplace that I would go back to again and again if I lived in San Diego.

i am  expecting great food, since its so freaking expensive. So i went to get a meal of two pizzas, great dissapointment. The cheese was completely transparent like it was preheated from the day before. what a rip of last time i go to this place and eating left overs.

I was expecting nice gooey melted cheese. what a shocker when i unwrapped those pizzas from the foil and saw yesturdays left overs. microwave food i call it.

So I'm single and bored and walking aimlessly in Seaport Village and being single and bored you get the munchies more frequently. And being single and bored, you get to pretty much order whatever you want with no regard to a healthy diet since no one is there to provide the guidance and mentoring that one needs, and this a prime example. I said to myself, I think I can do a 16" NY style pizza with extra cheese.

Dang what a mistake. I figured that since this was advertised as "NY style" that the crust would be nice and thin which meant less to eat, but nooooo it was thick and gross. Undercooked, like eating cookie dough.

I did the all meat pizza and the basically it was just a bunch of random stuff on there. I think they included ground beef in there too, but it wasn't complimenting each other. http://www.yelp.com/bi... It looks great, but no, it's not.

So no, I guess I was wrong to try to take on this beast. I could have achieved this goal had it been a lot better.

Lesson learned: I should not be single and bored. I should have activities to keep my senses on order and to prevent myself from ordering random stuff that looks crappy on the display. Yes it was my fault. They showed their not-so-appealing pizza on display and I still ordered it.

    Eh. Not impressed.

Can certainly understand the touristy magnetism of this place, as it's conveniently located a stone's throw from about a half dozen hotels. I decided to go here against my better judgment because another local yelper had positively reviewed this place... That and I was too lazy to walk further downtown to a location in whose pizza I am confident. But I digress...

    The good:
The sauce is pretty tasty, and there's plenty of it. The sauce is my favorite part and I abhor when pizza joints skimp on it. not the case here.

    The bad:
The crust had absolutely. No. Taste. Whatsoever. I get it: flour and water, pretty simple... However, most places at least throw in a little salt for flavor. Nope. Not here. I imagine white cardboard has a similar taste.

    The ugly:
Aint nothin thin about is thin crust pizza. It was super doughy, as off they had taken a deep dish and rolled it out a little.

Disappointed, at best. Won't be back.

My FAVORITE Pizza place in Southern California.

Chicago Deep Dish -- A-MAZING. Get it!
I usually order mine with extra cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms and olives.

Prices are reasonable. Location is GREAT, it's right by the water and near the convention center.  Seating is sparse though.

It's a family tradition for me to come to Asaggio, been coming here ever since elementary school with my parents. Now that I've relocated away from SD, we come here whenever we visit and  have a hardcore pizza craving.

I love to ride my motorcycle downtown to Seaport Village and hangout while having a nice cold beer and sitting by the waters edge.  Recently, I decided to have a slice of pizza to go with my beer so I came to Asaggio's.

The piece of pizza that the employee tried to pawn off on me looked so unappetizing by virtue of how it looked.  I have pulled better looking pizza out of my Sub-Zero that was a day old looking so much better then the slice he shoved in my direction.

I explained to the bearded employee that I was not a tourist that he was used to serving on a routine basis but rather a local that was not going to except the dreadful food he placed before me.

In writing, I know I seem to be much like a pompous ass but your going to have to trust me when I tell you that I am not.

When I was called upon to pick up my freshly baked slice, the bearded employee said that he would appreciate it if I did not announce aloud that I am a local.  That is something I can adhere to, but think about this; he made his announcement in the presence and earshot of other customers waiting in line.

I said to the bearded employee that I will not make known my San Diego residency if he would not challenge me as a paying customer in front of other patrons.  We both had everyone's attention at this point.

In the end, we both agreed to disagree.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THEIR DEEP DISH PIZZA

UNO's has closed - what to do, what to do! i LOVE Chicago deep dish - i don't have it often, but when i crave it -  it BETTER be good!

a good friend of mine recommended this place, it's obviously crowded and touristy here because of its location (seaport village), but worth a try since my mission for finding really good deep dish has been impossible lately (.. sorry Lefty's!)

there's only one size for a deep dish (10 inch) - they serve thin sliced NY pizza too (.. as well as calzones, pasta, bread sticks, etc).  you pay for your deep dish ($17) and add toppings ($2.25 each) so it can add up fast if you add a lot.  the sad thing is the pizza is:

1 - watery! deep dish is NOT supposed to be watery. as soon as we cut a slice each, water started pouring out.. and no it wasn't olive oil.
2 - has almost barely any tomato sauce on top
3 - overloaded with cheese - and the cheese was NOT good - it was chewy, gamey chewy!
4 - the toppings were used sparingly.  we had mushrooms, green onions, pepperoni, and meatballs.. i tasted more bread and cheese than i did ingredients, sad! =(

ehh - still continuing my mission until I find one!

Can't believe how expensive this place is!

I originally found this place on Groupon and thought I would give it a shot.  Didn't realize that it is in Seaport village- what a crazy tourist trap pain in the ass!

I ordered two 10 inch pizzas and the total was $48 with tax.  A ten inch pizza with toppings for almost $25?! I was stunned.  Fortunately I had a Groupon to make up for half of that.

Pizza was ok.  Nothing to write home about.   I would say that a 10 inch pizza here is worth about $12.  Certainly not almost $25.  The woman that was at the counter was very nice and pleasant.  The service is what is saving this review from being a 1 star.

Skip the tourist trap, go somewhere else.

This place is right on the water in seaport village! It is a beautiful spot to grab some pizza and a beer and enjoy the view of san diego bay. The pizza is average.  Ive only eaten here a couple of times over the last couple of years simply because its there.

Ive only had the sicilian style slices, which are thick crust slices. I pretty much try to avoid this area for a meal just because its touristy and all food is a little pricey for what you get in seaport village. Come here for the view and beer.

We got a Chicago style pizza with pepperoni, pineapple and extra cheese. Took 25-30 for the pizza to come out. Most places don't actually put extra cheese when you say extra cheese but there WAS extra cheese on this one. The sauce was okay, nothing special that you can't make yourself at home. Domino's has better sauce I think. Not a lot of pepperoni or pineapple either. Crust was soft and yummy though.

We also got garlic toast and a cannoli. The garlic toast with marinara sauce was okay though I wish it had a stronger garlic taste. The cannoli was also just okay, not amazing and not worth the money.

So everything was just okay. I'll probably not come back.

My sisters and I came here because of a Groupon (if it weren't for the coupon, I would've felt like I wasted my money). The place was pretty busy which I thought was a good sign. In hindsight, everyone eating there looked pretty touristy. The restaurant is located in Seaport Village so parking is kind of a hassle and you have to walk past a lot of vendors and street performers (like a really creepy looking mime) to get there. You also have to navigate in between tourists taking pictures and people who just walk really freaking slow.

We ordered a Chicago style pizza with pepperoni, pineapple and extra cheese. The crust had a good texture but other than that I'd have to say the pizza was really disappointing. Our pizza was very watery... I'm guessing it was from the pineapple which was either not drained completely or they just have very juicy pineapple bits. It didn't taste horrible but the wateriness at the bottom of the pizza pan made the pizza dough a bit soggy. The garlic toast was average... nothing really memorable but they do serve their marinara sauce warm which I always like. Their dessert cannolis are a rip off at $3.99 a pop. They taste like something you can get in the frozen dessert section of the supermarket.

I think this place is more for tourists hanging out in Seaport Village that don't want to travel far for pizza. The food is pricey and not that good. There are so many other amazing pizza places in San Diego, you don't want to waste your time coming here unless you have to.

We were starving by the time we walked to seaport village. Pizza sounded like an awesome idea. Ordered the meat lovers deep dish. It's made fresh so expect a little wait! But it was worth the wait. The sauce and the meat so good! And crust is soft and chewy, just the way I like it.
And the best part? Sitting under the sun watching people and ships passing by, and looking at the scenery. So pretty!

I just wanted a simple slice of cheese pizza, and this slice ended up being amazing! I got the thin crust, which was not at all soggy. It was crispy but not dried out cracker-like. The sauce and cheese was great too.

In fact, I ended up going back to get another slice. The pepperoni was just as good. I can't wait to go back.

My general experience with Seaport Village has been disappointing. I guess Asaggio would be at the upper end of the lot, but that's not saying much.

Food: Unfortunately I didn't have time to try the Chicago style pizza so I settled on the lasagna (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and a side salad (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Based on size, those two dishes could have fed two people. Based on calories, they could've probably fed a family of four. The lasagna was dripping in so much stringy mozzarella that my jaw hurt after eating a small square. Also, the amount of Italian dressing left on the plate after eating the salad was disturbing. I think it was only after seeing the leftover oil that I realized just what I had done to my body.

Atmosphere: Good luck finding a place to sit here. The crowds in the summer can be overwhelming. The interior is pretty small with a few tables, but there is a veranda by the sea with a couple more spaces. It's going to be cramped no matter where you dine. The interior is decorated with a vintage seat from Wrigley Field so the pizza must be authentic.

Service: Order at the cash register and pick up at the opposite end. Your food will come out lightning fast.

Synopsis: So, the food was actually yummy, but I definitely had intestinal issues later on. Eat at your own risk.

Grab a slice of the San Diego Sunset.

The slices are a pretty good deal, ordering a whole pie isn't. Plus the wait is too long for a whole pie.

    - Somehow a large Pizza and Large Salad came out to 30 bucks?!?
    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...
    - Note to Owner...if it's a busy three day weekend and you know the place is going to swamped bring in MORE STAFF. Even more egregious is the fact the guy taking orders WALKED off his post and spent 5 minutes sweeping floors without letting the people in line  know? WTF, is this is a union shop or something?

    - Free refills here, but next door at the Greek restaurant ( sister restaurant) they charge?!.

So, Asaggios Pizza has staffing issues and the place is expensive. You can't beat the harbor side dining / view though..

I'm giving it four stars knowing full well that it's right in the middle of the Seaport Village tourist trap. That said, we had two damn fine slices of NY style pizza. Mine with just cheese, my wife's with pepperoni. Tourist trap prices yes, but it was really really good. A few seats inside, and a deck out front, but this is the kind of place where you just grab a slice and walk.

This place is the best place (that I am aware of) to get Chicago-style deep dish pizza in the downtown San Diego area. Just as I stated in my review of Rocco's in Tucson, this is not a thick crust pizza, it is a thin crust deep dish pizza pie. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best way to get a pizza. I have had a calzone from here as well and would give it a 4.5 out of 5. It was very good as well and the owner gave me spinach for free since it was almost out. This tasted awesome but was a little too thick on the dough. You do get a side of marinara sauce with it so you can dip the crust and enjoy every bite. They also serve big-ass 32 oz. beers which are great to sip on while sitting out on the patio facing the harbor. Nice. Service was friendly and prices are reasonable. Definitely worth checking out.

My boyfriend and I ate here for an early dinner before heading back to LA.  It was highly recommended by Micha L. to get the deep dish so we ordered the sausage.  I liked the pizza and I'm not a huge deep dish fan; I'm a thin crust kind of girl.  The crust was crispy and the cheese gooey, mmmm!  But the selling point for me was the sausage; it was spiced sausage and I can definitely taste it.  The taste didn't blend in.

The sucky part was their $0.50 refill policy.  I was hoping that you can just buy the drink elsewhere but everyone charges for refills so we were out of luck.  Luckily, we don't really drink soda.  Another downfall was the water; they don't serve it.  They made us walk over to the next restaurant and use their water fountain... kinda lame.

They do have outdoor seating - one in the back near the carousel and the other was overlooking the water.  We were able to enjoy our pizza while watching the sunset.  It was a great way to end our SD trip.

This place is good but has an identity crisis

Ever since I can remember, I've been hearing Cheryl Y. and Micha L. rave about this place. So being in San Diego, we knew that if we didn't visit Asaggio, the trip wouldn't be complete.

We walked up and noticed this place had 2 names: Asaggio Pizza, Pasta, Plus and Asaggio Pizza, Pasta, Subs: New York Style/Chicago Style. But once we walked in, the décor looked like an "I (Heart) Chicago" Store exploded and there was nothing about New York, except for the menu.

We ordered a Chicago Deep Dish with half pepperoni and half sausage. It took awhile to come out but once it did, it was steaming hot and definitely fresh.

We immediately took the pie to their waterfront patio and were able to watch the sunset as we enjoyed the crispy-crusted goodness. Due to the birds, most of the customers fled from the patio into the restaurant. But little did they know if you don't leave your food out, they wouldn't bug you.

In the end, the pizza was great and cheap. It stood up to all of the raves, for sure.

During my first year of teaching, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend an all expense paid trip to San Diego for a science teachers (nerd) conference.  My friend and I stumbled upon a humble little pizza joint that offered deep dish pizza.  Here, I had my first taste of both deep dish and artichoke hearts, both of which I fell in love with.

Fast forward a few years.  I realized that I never wrote down the name of this amazing pizza place and had also forgotten its location.  All I had were happy memories of a great pie and a single picture we sanpped of my friend with our GARGANTUAN pizza.  It was near a marina or port of some sort, but my memory stinks.  :P  Every time we went down to SD, I would dream of finding this place again, but to no avail.  (I also didn't look too hard because I had no idea where to start.)

This past weekend, my hubby and I were heading down to San Diego for a photo gig and I was DETERMINED to get me some deep dish pizza.  Not just any but this specific one from my past.  I spent over half an hour researching online and on Yelp.  Seaside Village, deep dish; pizza, San Diego; Oceanside, Chicago deep dish...  Fail fail fail.  Then I remembered that it was relatively near to the SD convention center.  I played around on Google maps and the words "Seaport Village" caught my eye.  One final search on Yelp for "deep dish, Seaport Village" and Asaggio came up.  Looking through the posted pictures, I noticed that someone had taken a picture of the sign my friend was sitting under in the one picture I had.  Score!

So finally on to the pizza review.  I have only had the Chicago deep dish with the works, so I can't speak for the rest of the menu.  But with this one pie, good heavens, pizza heaven.  Granted, it's probably not "authentic" with a sausage patty on top and cheese on the bottom, but it is soooo dang good.  Big chunks of tomatoes, artichoke hearts, sausage, and melted cheese...  *drool*  It was every bit as good as I remembered it from 9 years past and I'll be hittin' up Asaggio's every time I head to San Diego from here on out!  :D

This place wasn't half bad.  After I had toured the Midway, I was hungry, and wanted to come here and hang out.  I didn't want to eat anything fancy, so I ended up here since they sold pizza by the slice.

Its a casual pizza joint. Nothing fancy.  They claim to have Chicago and sicilian style pizza.  I went for the cililian pepporoni pizza slice with a pop.  I noticed that the pop station is a fill your own drink fountian style thingy. On the fountian itself, it said that there was a 25 cent refill charge for smalls and 50 cent refill for larges. Really?  If you want to charge for refills, maybe you should put the drink station behind the counter.

Anyways, pizza took a while to come out, but when I got it, I really liked it.  Not the greatest food in the world, but definately hit the spot and killed the hunger pains.

They also have a walk up window where you can order drinks and such without having to go inside.  I thought this was pretty cool!  While I was there, I noticed that the window area was quite busy!!  I know they serve alcohol out of it, but I dont think they do food.  Not sure, but definately cool in my book.

The pizza place is okay.  I kind of debated between 3 and 4 stars, so I went with 3, but feel its more of a 3.5 star rating.

The Chicago-style "deep dish" pizza at this supposedly Chicago-style pizzeria is a mediocre excuse for Chicago pizza.  First of all, deep dish pizza does not mean an inch of cheese.  Anybody who's ever actually had a piece of Chicago-style pizza should know this.  The crust was fine.  But, that's where the resemblance ended.  The toppings were sparse, and there was almost no tomato sauce.  Chicago-style pizza is covered in tomato, and has ample toppings.

Oh, and it took half an hour to get our pizza -- which would be understandable if they were actually serving Chicago-style pizza and not huge pie crusts full of melted cheese.

This place was a big disappointment -- which isn't terribly surprising considering its location inside the tourist trap of Seaport Village.  This place counts on its location and Chicago kitsch to sell cheap imitation Chicago pizza to unsuspecting tourists.

We ate here last night... its a definite NOM NOM NOM... Its nestled in Seaport Village right near the water. Although it was jam packed with people and the place is small... the line was not too bad; maybe 10 minutes. You can either order by the cheese pizza by the slice the add toppings, at a price per topping, OR order a whole pizza.

We opted for sliced pizza, thin crust, and a drink. I can say i loved it. The crust was thin and crunchy on the outside with just the right amount of softness on the inside.

This pizza doesn't have an over abundance of sauce or cheese, so I was a bit surprised when I first picked up our order and saw my sausage, mushrooms, peperoni & jalapenos laid on top of the crust and not covered by a thick layer of oily cheese (as I'm used to). I sprinkled some grated parm over the top of my slice and dug in. let me just say mmmmm tasty!

If you are a lover of really saucy pizza, this may not be the place for you... but for me.. its a NOM NOM NOM. Yeah baby,.. thats 3 Noms!

I love the the deep dish pizza, then again I love cheese. That's all I've really ate here but its good. It is mostly made up of about an inch of cheese with pepperoni under and a lil sauce with great crust. It isn't the traditional Chicago pizza like they state, but its still really good.

Great location, I love that you can walk along the bay then just pop in and enjoy a BIG CHEESY PIZZA. I still prefer Lefty's Pizza over Asaggio Pizza.

After our shoddy brunch experience at Busters Longboard whatever, we decided instead to hit up this place where we ordered a 16" pie with half pepperoni and half meatball.

The service was friendly, though the the pizza took a little longer than we would have liked. No biggie.

They sliced the meatballs NY style instead of crumbling them up, which I MUCH prefer and while the pepperoni was a bit greasy and needed some blotting, that's really how it should be.

The crust was a little thicker than I understand NY-style pizza should be (and they do claim it's NY-style "thin crust"), but it was fairly tasty. Not quite as flavorful as some I've had in the past, but overall, a decent pizza.

If I were down in the area, I would eat there again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.  Their calzones looked *delicious*, so I might consider going that route in the future.

    Worst.  Food.  Ever.

We stopped in after a long day walking around and our 4 year old was insisting on spaghetti for dinner.

As a native Chicagoan, I am MORTIFIED that these people are trying to associate their shiteous food with that marvelous city.  As I said to my husband, NO SELF RIGHTEOUS CHICAGOAN WOULD EVER HAVE ANY ANY ANY NEW YORK PIZZA AT THEIR JOINT!!!  I should have walked out then.

This place tries to please everybody and falls miserably short of pleasing anyone.

I had the New York pizza - thin crust, barely edible.  The Chicago pizza frightened me.  I asked for mushrooms...they cut a few fresh ones up and tossed them on as an afterthought.  Greasy, flaccid, flavorless.  Ick.

My husband had the chicken parm sandwich.  COVERED in congealed cheese.  Looked gross - he said it was okay, but I couldn't venture a bite.

Our son has the spaghetti.  Looked edible.  I took one bite and SPIT IT OUT.  Simply the most horrific sauce I have ever had.  When, after a few bites he said he didn't want anymore, I didn't have the heart to push it.  He had suffered long enough.  Poor baby.

$22 for all.  If we weren't absolutely starving, I would have thrown a fit at how bad the food was.

NO EXCUSE TO EAT FOOD THIS BAD IN THIS CITY PEOPLE.

Avoid this place like the plague.  Seriously.

(The Chicago pizza looked like a nightmare.)

Maybe the mistake was not getting the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza (but then again, I was mooching off my nephews pizza).  My nephew got two slices of the thin crust pepperoni.  It took a while to get the food, but it was the weekend so I'm sure it was the large crowd that they struggled with, not the fact that they didn't have any pizzas already prepped to go into the oven.

The size of the slices were decent, but the pepperoni slices were wafer thin and it seemed to be more tomato sauce then melted mozzarella cheese.  And it being in a tourist area, expect higher prices.

Even though we locals rarely visit the tourist trap spots, this is one that is worth the trouble.  And by trouble I mean the fact that it is in Seaport Village makes it a little difficult to park and such during the summer months when all of the tourists are here.

Now, to my bad reviewers....you are all going about this the wrong way...getting a slice of thin crust pizza is not the way to go here...it is a decent slice of Za...but not my recommendation....give yourself a little time, order the Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza, go for a walkabout and you will like this place more.  This pizza is good...good sauce...extremely cheesy...they don't short ya there...and plenty of leftovers, since you sure can't eat but one slice.

I had great Chicago Deep Dish pizza here around closing time on a weekday, so you know the manager was ready to get out of there and go home. The pizza took a while to make, but it was delicious and more than enough for two people. Get it with extra sauce (like I get all my pizza), but no need to order extra cheese, this pizza is packed with cheese!

Fantastic Chicago type pizza with magnificent bay side seats. You simply can't get yourself a better view of the San Diego Bay at a lower price. The Spinach and three cheese pizza is the greatest. This is certainly our Friday night relax spot following a extensive week at the office. An awesome pizza, a glass of wine, an attractive view and all the folks to view.
