Home made everything. Down to the Chai. The waitstaff and owners are wonderfully friendly and familial, bring a great sense of humor with you. The food is delicious. The menu doesn't overwhelm. You'll walk in feeling good and walk out feeling better.
Keep in mind the place is small and they don't take reservations. So take it for what it is, don't get upset they won't make a reservation to seat 7, that's a 1/4 of the dining room. And be patient, this isn't a chain with a massive kitchen designed to churn out mass produced crap. -

Some body help! I am eatting healthy!
I went here today after reading some great reviews and I must tell you that my fellow yelpers didn't disappoint. I had the chicken shawarma plate and my husband had the sampler. I was afraid that the sampler would be too big for me but it turned out to not be that big at all. The chicken was lean, not too much and everything else was just wonderful. I've never had such wonderful pita. It's like a cross between a pita and an english muffin with some cornmeal crust. The meal was very healthy and satisfying. And anyone saying that the portion is too small, the rest of the world eat like this! so they aren't obese like Americans!
AND the meal wasn't even the best part!
The baklava was to die for! I always try to order baklava everywhere I go and I feel like I've never had a baklava before in my life. this one just blew any other I've had out of the park. It was sooooo good! Don't skip dessert! In fact, next time I go I might just start with baklava and Arabic coffee. I am not much of a coffee drinker but the next table ordered some and the smell was wonderful. I will have to try it, it comes in a tiny, dainty little cup, so precious. I LOVE THIS PLACE! and the atmosphere is great. it felt like a little bistro, I wanted to sit around longer but feel like I am taking up room b/c they only have about 7-8 tables. Will be back soon. -

I CANNOT believe there are any bad ratings for Arabesque. This is one of the best spots in Boulder, full stop. The schwarma is delicious, the arabic coffee is amazing (though super strong!), the chai is homemade and the best chai I've had in town, and the atmosphere is everything you'd want from a small restaurant.
Reading the reviews, it seems some people take issue with the owner. I sincerely cannot figure out why. To me, it has always seemed like she treats customers as though they are guests in her home. She is perfectly lovely, a wonderful cook, and her passion for her restaurant is evident in the way she seems to dance around the kitchen.
Basically, everything about Arabesque is just perfect. -

manal, the owner, is the kind of chef and restaurant owner that cooks with love. this is a tiny place, maybe 8 tables. small menu written on the wall. rose water is served with your meal. it's a family-run restaurant, so the daughter will most likely be your waitress and the mom cooks. chicken wrap and mediterranean sampler are the best. order baklava for dessert! really charming place and one of my favorite lunch spots

Review from Ilona F.
Consider this to be a Middle Eastern restaurant with the atmosphere of a European cafe. Enjoyed lunch al fresco with a friend and immediately fell in love with the soothing rose water served in a carafe. I ordered the vegetarian sampler and was impressed by the variety of flavors and the arrangement: they used carrot strips to elegant effect! The warm from the oven pita was divine. The food was so tasty we licked our plates clean and didn't have room for dessert.

You might get yelled at or have some aggressive, sarcastic comment thrown at you eeek.

Was excited to try this place out. I spied the hummus and baba plates for $7 each, and asked the waitress to do a plate with half and half. She looked at me as if I was from Mars. "We can't do that," she said simply. I was like "huh?" I've been eating hummus and baba together my whole life. Why can't they just put a dollop of each on the plate? They're both the same price. But rather than argue the point, I got up and left. I love Middle Eastern food, but I guess I'll have to settle for driving out to the Ali Baba Grill in Golden, where they' re happy to put hummus, baba and most anything else on a plate together -- at half the cost.

This is by far the best chicken shawarma I've ever had- the stuff dreams are made of. Who doesn't like a plate of hummus covered in salad, delicious chicken and the best pita you've ever had. This place is small, not crowded for lunch, and the chai is delicious. Even the water is tasty. There is a small shaded outdoor area to eat, not a great place for crowds. Obsessed w/ this place.

My group, The Boulder Foodies, went to Arabesque. I called 3 days early to tell her we would be coming and she was all nice and happy and was going to make sure she was prepared with food ready so we could all eat together.
Well, I did not personally attend the breakfast, but my group of 13 people were all perplexed to have met the most unpleasant, mean, curt restaurant owner. She even told one of my members that we should not come back! Our group is a really nice, patient and kind bunch of diners. We have big breakfasts at every restaurant in Boulder, all with great results. According to my foodies, this was the strangest experience they ever had. -

Wonderfully Warm hospitality. Delicious food. Hummus is good and their bread is freshly made.
The food has delicious flavors, well balanced spices and the chicken shwarma just rocks! and don't forget the dolmas! -

I can't believe it took me so long to try this place! Had lunch here recently with a friend. It's a bit off the beaten (Pearl Street) path and can be a challenge to find at first, but don't give up - it's awesome!! Comparable in quality to Ali Baba Grill in Golden.
We had the sampler platter (baba ghanouj, tabbouleh, hummus, Arabic bread, chicken shawarma, 3 freshly stuffed dolmas) and the chicken shawarma plate (hummus, tomato slice, red onion, spring mix, chicken shawarma, yogurt sauce on the side, and Arabic bread) and the small baklava (3 pieces). Everything was super fresh and tasty, the chicken tender and flavorful, and I thought the portion size was perfect -- we were full but not over-stuffed -- and the prices were on par with other places in Boulder. I enjoyed it so much I got the beef shawarma plate to go. If I had one suggestion it would be to make the yogurt sauce a little saltier.
It was also such a pleasure to speak with the married owners and their family. They are incredibly friendly and enthusiastic, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know their customers.
I thought the service was fine for a leisurely Saturday afternoon, and I wouldn't trade it for impersonal, more efficient service. They serve complimentary rose water in a carafe and refilled it once so we never ran out - it's a pet peeve of mine to run out of water, especially when I don't have anything else to drink.
Let's see...what else, their patio is dog friendly - they have a little water dish outside for 'em. In response to James G's review - nothing smelled of vinegar while I was there :-) They serve breakfast but unfortunately they are not open for dinner - I would be stopping on my way home from work for take-out if they were! For now, Arabesque is a weekend lunch place for me. -
Review from James G.
Wow, how quickly a place can go downhill.
Portions have been reduced, prices have risen, and quality has dropped.
I've never had an Arabic coffee in a demitasse cup, it's pointless at that point you'll have a mouthful of grinds, that pretty much describes this place & my experience there.
Be forewarned.
One other quick note, the smell of vinegar permeates the restaurant & there doesn't seem to be an exhaust hood.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Amanda M.
Just got home from Boulder, and I'm eating my second lunch.
We visited Arabesque around 1:00pm and since it's a Saturday, we expected a wait, but luckily there were 4 open tables when we got there. We didn't know if we were supposed to wait to be seated or if it was open seating. The owner pointed us towards a two-top by the window, nice.
Then we didn't know if we were going to get menus or not so we looked over the chalk board. No menus, that's cool.
Then we didn't know if we were supposed to order at the counter, so my boyfriend asked and the owner said someone would be right with us. Our server-- and I use the term loosely-- sauntered over and asked what we needed. He was one of the weirdest servers ever. He asked how full my BF would like his cup of coffee... considering there are NO refills, you would think he would assume that everyone wants their coffee cup full. He also brought our baklava out before our meal and said "At least you can have this." We had been waiting 25 minutes at this point for our lunch. Who wants their dessert as their appetizer?
Mid-East Sampler ($14)- really delicious, but not as big as we were hoping (see picture). So maybe 1/3 of a chicken breast, 1 pita, 2 stuffed grape leaves, 1/4 C hummus, 1/2 C baba ghannush, 1/2 C tabouli, 1/4 C of olive oil does not = $14 in my opinion.
Coffee ($2.25)- Yes, they pour it from a french press, and no, this was not their special "strong" coffee, and NO refills? Come on now. 6oz of coffee does not = $2.25
Baklava ($4)- Really good, 3 pieces come in a small order, the best value we got this afternoon.
This place is super S-L-O-W. It took 30 minutes for a small plate of food to come out. I don't even think they needed to heat anything besides the chicken.
There were 5 staff members:
1. The owner occasionally running food to people outside
2. Our "server"
3. Lady Owner/Cook
4. A girl who filled water glasses and did dishes
5. A girl who apparently had no job but to roam around
After we all but licked the plate clean, we left, still hungry. I would have ordered more food but I did not have the patience to wait another 30 minutes plus for some chicken to be cooked. My boyfriend ended up eating a chili cheese dog from Pearl Street less than 20 minutes after lunch. I got Pita Pit to take back with me to Denver to eat in the car. -

Review from Hannah E.
This is the kind of sweet, homey, friendly little nook where it physically pains me to be honest about how not-good the food is.
Everything was pointing toward hidden gem - the sassiness of the owner, the fact that it took 15 minutes to even get our order taken because the tiny place was so packed, the fragrant smells pouring from the open kitchen right behind the counter, the lime flavor permeating the table water, the small menu, the happy patrons.
Alas, everything we ordered was SLATHERED in vinegar. The beef, the hummus, the dolmas, the beef shawarma wrap (even though we ordered chicken), the tabouli... everything. I don't know how they managed this feat, actually - it's as though they used vinegar to fry stuff up instead of oil. In between bites I frantically drank water and carrot juice to try and clear the vinegar. It didn't work. I couldn't taste anything except that.
The only respite was the baba ganouj, which was fantastic. I tried to wall it off with bread from the rest of the meal so no residual vinegar snuck over.
I was unable to finish the meal, even though I was still hungry. However... everyone else at the restaurant seemed to be enjoying their food, which I didn't understand. Is it possible that we got the only bad batch out of a restaurant full of orders? Am I just super-sensitive to vinegar (the same thing happened to me at John's)? Or does everyone just love the food despite it?
I'll say this: all the ingredients were clearly fresh, especially those in the tabouli. They tasted like they'd just been plucked from a garden. Explosive parsley, crisp green onions, everything. I just wish I'd been able to taste them better over the onslaught of vinegar. -

Arabesque is an absolute gift to Boulder. Don't know why I waited so long to try it!
My tasty meal began with a friendly greeting. Seems like a family owning this place and running it. I'm guessing the young man who greeted and seated me was the son? I didn't ask.
Rose-flavored water appeared at my table. Exquisite.
I ordered from the menu posted on the wall. There are no printed menus, I was told. Today I tried the Chicken Shawarma and a Spinach Pie. All of this was more than enough to eat half of and save half for a meal later. I enjoyed the Spinach Pie, which was something very different from a Spanakopita. It was fresh spinach cooked inside a bread-consistency thin crust. There was another vegetable in it, with a pinkish-red colour. Chard perhaps? I meant to ask but forgot to.
The Shawarma was really the star of the show. Generous portions of various fresh organic vegetables accompanied the flavorful spicy chicken and yummy hummous rolled inside the tortilla-like flatbread. So good!
Lots of happy customers were inside and outside, smiling and talking.
Oh, and last but not least, my chai was made especially for me, brewed from scratch. They make their own chai spices here. It was aromatic, with bits of ground spice atop the chai.
Parking in the area closeby here is a challenge, especially during their open hours (8a-4p) but the effort is worth it. And like I always say, bicycling, walking, or busing are possibilities as well. -

We loved discovering this little gem! We felt like we fell into a little European cafe when we came in. What a cozy spot - not for people in a hurry. This is much more about hanging out and taking your time getting to know the other customers and owners than just eating. Right when we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the owners, who immediately coddled over our baby and carried her around while we enjoyed our meal.
It's rare to find restaurants run, cooked, and served by the owners anymore. The service, food and ambience were all fantastically fresh and simple. Great new restaurant! -

You MUST try the baklava here if:
1. All you've ever had is that icky soggy syrup-laden mess most middle eastern eateries pass off as baklava around Boulder.
2. You've had the real deal and are mourning the fact that all you can find in Boulder is icky, soggy, and syrup-laden.
This is the best Baklava I've had since I capitalized on having a neighbor from Egypt. Light, flaky, rosewater, organic sugar, etc. no syrup...mmmmmmm, mmmmmm!!
I will have to go back another day to sample their other food offerings, but if they are anything as amazing as the baklava, I will certainly be back again, and again!
P.S. Also loved the proprietor, a very friendly woman who chatted breifly about the soul and power/meaningfulness of food. -

The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. What earns Arabesque a two-star review is this:
I ordered a chicken shawarma sandwich. The cashier told the cook (who, I think, is also the owner) my order and processed my credit card. The cook/(owner?) realized that she didn't have any chicken cooked up, but she did have a beef shawarma sandwich all ready to go. So, rather than do what I'm paying her to do--cook--she approached me and said, "You don't eat beef? You want a beef shawarma sandwich?" Long story short, I didn't feel like being pushy, so I took the beef shawarma sandwich and left. But the cook's (owner's?) approach demonstrated poor service and really turned me off. If they had been out of chicken, I would have completely understood; but they weren't out of chicken, the cook just didn't want to do her job. -

Finally, some real Mediterranean food in Boulder!
I had the Med-East Platter, which i worried would be an enormous amount of food, but I had no problem polishing it off, even with the addition of their delicious lemony chicken. Vibrant green tabbouli (traditional parsley salad, no bulgar overload here!), flavorful baba ganoush, and fresh hummus are all happily resting in my belly.
The hummus was not the best I've ever had, but I did really enjoy the whole chickpeas they incorporated into it just to remind you where it came from. That being said, I still scooped up huge globs of it with my bread without hesitation.
And speaking of...huge authenticity points for serving the same Arab bread that my mom made all throughout my childhood. A taste you truly can't get from anywhere other than your own hands.
The homemade taste is true to form. It seems that the owners have set up a restaurant around their very own kitchen, which makes the atmosphere more akin to friends having you over rather than a regular restaurant. But keep in mind, your friends are never in a rush to hurry up a dinner party, and neither is Arabesque. Call well ahead for take-out orders. -

This place is adorable, and the food is incredibly fresh. Something is just a little off. I read another review that said everything was covered in vinigar, well everything I ordered was covered in olive oil. The salad I brought back to a coworker literally had half a cup of oil on it, and it was not dressed, it was just the topping for the side of hummus! It was basically inedible, if I had not taken it to go I would have sent it back. The hummus is fantastic, the sample platter is really great, the location is great. The service is also really friendly and helpful. I will be back!

this place rocks my world. you never, and i mean never, find tabbouli made right - people usually just load on the bulgar wheat because it's easy, and don't use the right amount of parsley. she makes it right, and her hummus is made from scratch - with real beans, not canned beans. her menu isn't too elaborate, in part because she spends so much time perfecting each dish. she recently added tiramisu... we were in heaven! so good!
i love the fact that this place is run by a family. it has great ambiance, friendly service, and is warm and welcoming. -

We will be back.....nice to find good eats. I found this place by looking at the list of boulder restaurants.
My husband and I ordered each a shawarma plate $10 (chicken or beef sits on a bed of spring salad, side of tzasiki sauce, and a hummus side). It was delicious. I also love the rosewater. If you want to have lunch, try to go a little early because it will be packed. My husband and I like the chicken more because it has a good citrusy taste. ...I saw others order the med-east platter $13 - looks like it comes with dolma, hummus, tabouleh, meat and pita. I wish I got that instead because I wanted to try the dolma, well, next time. It looks like it will be good for two people and just order other sides.
I also got some raspberry crisp cookies, and they were awesome. Great place, nice ambience. -

Great little place! Came here for lunch while wandering around boulder and was pleasantly surprised by fresh ingredients, delicious schwarma, rose water in the table water and a spunky owner who teased my boyfriend for not eating his salad. The menu is small, but if you're looking for authentic, fresh and tasty mid east food, this is the place.

Nothing has gone downhill, nothing smelled of vinegar and nothing tasted of vinegar!
My husband and I ate lunch there today. We went in a little later around 1:30 or 2pm. We sat in the leather chairs buy the fireplace. It was a lovely lunch. From the water scented by rose to the ooey gooey nutty delicious baklava. We ordered the lentil soup and the the amazing sampler plate. The sampler plate is the perfect amount of food...very often portions are huge and i regret eating that much later. i felt fantastic when we left. My very favorite was the tabouli...spectacular!
I appreciate their authentic food and authentic personalities! The owner and her son were adorable. -

Let's say 4.5 stars. Started with the Med sampler plate. The lady that runs the place and cooks created it, right then. A chicken curry, baba gannuj, hummus, dolmas, tabbouli, and Arabic bread. All good. My wife and I split a small order of baklava--very good. I was still hungry, so I ordered a hummus plate. Great stuff. She cooks the chickpeas and grinds them herself. No ready-made stuff. Oh, and the water has mint in it--the real thing.

They serve the best shwarmas, hummus & baklava for 50 miles... but the treat is to walk out feeling the sweetness surround you; like you belong, like there is order to the universe, like there is a reason we get hungry; like that reason is so we can smile at each other and we can serve each other, and we can feel the warmth and presence of strangers. Thank you for smiling at my friends; as dense as we are.

Arabesque is wonderful! I had lunch there with my boyfriend, and we both enjoyed the food immensely. I had the vegetarian med-east platter which included hummus, baba ganouj, tabouli, stuffed grape leaves, and pita bread. Everything was fresh and delicious, and I loved the variety. My boyfriend had the chicken shwarma wrap. The chicken was perfectly spiced, and super-moist and tender. The owner is really friendly. I tried a sample of their baklava, and it's some of the best I've ever had.

On Saturday afternoon my husband and I wandered around looking for a place to have lunch. I had heard about this place, but never tried it so we decided to try it out.
What a treat! The food is the best, freshest Middle Eastern I've had in Boulder. I had a sampler platter full of baba, hummus, warm stuffed grape leaves, tabuli and the best pita I've ever had. My husband had a chicken schwarma sandwich that was bursting it was so full of fresh veggies.
The couple who runs the place are absolutely delightful. They obviously care about food and have a passion for what they do. The interior feels very European, a sophisticated relaxed space to enjoy a very well prepared meal.
Go! And, then spread the word! -

I have used yelp a lot for various different things and I find it very helpful. I read all the reviews on this little spot before going back in December 2010 while I was pregnant. The food was just outstanding and I was very pleased. I few weeks ago I went for lunch with a co-worker and again the food was awesome. The only thing was I was charged $90.57 for my lunch and not $9.57, which I guess can be a mistake and I get that. The following Saturday I took my husband to this place since we were in the area. Since they do not have any menus with descriptions we had to ask what was in every single dish. My husband ordered the beef Shwarma wrap and asked for no onions and no tomatoes. The man (I suspect this is the owners husband) taking our order had a really hard time explaining what was in the dishes, but assured us that there would be NO onion and NO tomatoes. When the dishes came out my husband's wrap came out as a plate, which the man explained was better because they make the bread and the bread they use for the wrap they buy elsewhere (did not indicate that it is a more expansive dish). The dish was covered in ONIONS!!! The man serving us just said "onions are good for you". I wanted to send back the dish, but the server told us that this was the better dish. OK, time to pay. I stated that I did not want to pay for something we didn't order and the owner said out load to the cashier that I was trying to GAME them. This was probably the worse service and dining experience I have had EVER! They still made me pay full price for SOMETHING I DIDN'T ORDER. We spent $28.00 for lunch for two, no alcohol, just water - I think that is pretty expensive - but ok if you get what you want.... Granted it was not a $150.00 outing, but I still feel violated for the way I was treated and spoken to at their establishment. By the way what happened to "The Customer is Always Right"????

This place is great! I have eaten their hummus and baba ghanoush, both on their homemade pita bread, and it was wonderful. Best baklava I think that I have ever had. I can't wait to try more items from their menu soon. I must also add that I met the owners on my most recent visit, and they are so very nice, I am even more encouraged to support this great new addition to Boulder. Located a little off-the-beaten-path, so there is not as great of opportunity for walk by business; please support them!

This restaurant was recently reviewed in the Daily Camera with high marks so of course I had to try it. It definitely lived up to it's high praised review and mine. I know Middle-Eastern food and it definitely ranks very high. Their sampler with stuffed grape leaves, hummus, baba ghunush was excellent and the chicken shawarma was delicious. We arrived for a late lunch (closer to 2:00), and the place was packed! We had to order to baklava to go and it was divine! The best I've ever had. The best part, the owners were so genuinely nice and really cared about what they served. If you haven't been there, must give it a try! I'll definitely be back.
