For my birthday, I dragged my mom and sister around the Bywater and St. Claude neighborhood to seek out plants for my garden room. I hadn't stopped into here in a while and very glad I did. Even if you're not really looking to buy plants this spot is so nice and serene for a walkabout with water lilies, fountains, and fun outdoor sculptures and artwork.
If you have outdoor space with water elements, this is where you should go to get your plants!
They also have an indoor area with a great bit of fun things to purchase for outdoor/indoor patios and knick knacks/furniture that is all really cute and affordable.
I went with two plants, one fuchsia and another dark palm with sharp leaves and little purple flowers that sometimes bloom out the middle. My mom purchased a really cool lawn sculpture to bring home to Iowa.
My only issue is that when asking a younger gentlemen about the care of my plants, he wasn't incredibly informative and just told me they were going to die eventually. Yes, everything dies. Circle of life. I guess I was hoping for a bit more on how to take care of these plants...My fuchsia is still kind of holding on (I keep moving it to see if different light helps) and the other plant is doing well but both made great additions to my indoor garden.
I would absolutely go back to find other plants since they had a great variety, and hopefully I can add some of their patio decor as well!Helpful 12Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Guy W.New Orleans, LA06Jul 21, 2018
American Aquatic Gardens is certainly experience and is worth taking a bit of time to explore. The selection of plants is relatively good, though pricing at this nursery is significantly higher than many other quality nurseries. If you're looking for basic landscape garden plants, this probably isn't the place you want to go. If you're looking for waterlilies on the other hand, you will find a nice selection of potted and flowing plants ready to take home (if you can afford them, that is.)
Most of the staff on the yard is helpful. I would seek out Matthew for accurate and helpful information on plants. He is a long term employee and knows his stuff. Other employees I've spoken with clearly have no real knowledge on most of the plants offered here, and the owners are anything but friendly or helpful.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 30, 2013
Crazy that this place only has 1 review. Not only do they have a good selection of plants, aquatic and not, shade and sun, annuals and perennials...you get the drift, they also sell a ton of yard art. Breaks my heart that I had to tell Vicky L that we could not buy the 8 foot $3k gorilla. Oh and did I mention fountains?
Inside is a great shop for home decor items and other gifty things with a gardening edge. AND then there's the jewelry behind the counter. I've been able to find affordable Christmas gift items some years that were just perfect.
Bonus points for having a private lot so you don't have to hunt for off street parking.Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Alyssa J.New Orleans, LA73239527May 10, 2016
At this time of year I always fancy myself some kind of botanist. I walk around the city taking pictures of flowers and plants telling myself and others that I am going to grow a fantastic garden with herbs and flowers and fruit trees and the whole nine yards.
A few weeks later I usually realize that I don't have a green thumb.
ANYWAY, we stopped in here for a mother's day gift. Holy Moly this place is AWESOME! We were looking for a fruit tree and they were getting ready to close so I didn't have as much time to look around as I would have liked, but even just the fruit tree selection was incredible. Limes! Lemons! Oranges! You like Nectarines? I got ya nectarines right here.
Everything was separated in a way that made the place really easy to navigate. Succulents, herbs, perrenials, annuals, trees. They also had a HUGE selection of seeds. They even had a section dedicated to composting as well as pretty pots and holders, and even fish!!!!! (I thought that was awesome).
The staff was friendly and courteous even though we were asking questions at 4:45 when they closed at 5 and probably wanted to get the hell out of there.
I can't say I know if the pricing is fair or high, but I will say if you are looking to spruce up your lawn or patio hit these guys up.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Judith L.Baltimore, MD0134May 26, 2018
Judge for yourself. I bought a fountain for my condominium association
3 years ago. Our old fountain had been here since I moved in in 2000.
So, it had lasted for at least 17 years, through frosts, rain, and even
Katrina. But alas, we needed a new one. I went here to buy one and my neighbors bought the same one for their home in Monroe, LA.
Both of our fountain cracked and crumbled, just after three years. I guess they don't make them like they do anymore, but judge for yourself.
We will buying another one, but not from here.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Armond B.Houma, LA21100133Aug 24, 2017
This place is pretty awesome. And indeed, very therapeutic. It is almost like you are walking into a small enclave of pure zin. They have a great variety. One of the workers is Matt. He's awesome, and I always enjoy learning new things from him.

LOVE IT!
For years I lived down the street from this hidden gem. So, you can imagine how astonished I was when I stumbled in, on the advance of a family member, looking for rubber lining for our lily and fish pounds. The staff was very knowledgeable and took the time to answer all of our questions. At that moment, we decided that they were going to be our new neighborhood favorite.
Ever since then I make a point to send everyone I know that's looking for something special for their garden to this little oasis. It's the best hidden gem in the City, if you ask me.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rick A.Baton Rouge, LA021Jan 1, 2017
I make a special stop when in town from Baton Rouge. Great people, great service, great plants and prices. Prices are unbeatable for indoor plants.

If you want statuary a fountain or a pond this is the place. Not only are the grounds meditative with the sounds of water everywhere but it is well priced and very unique. I got two small fountains and a large statue for my courtyard.
So much to chose from. Every kind of water lily, baskets for plants in ceramic and iron. Super helpful staff. If you have an odd or compact space you want to design a secret garden in.......this is where you go. If you just need a time out with plants near the quarter on a hot day you are just looking......don't miss it.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
