(This is coming from a girl that used to go to this school.)
When I went here, I these two girls were spreading rumors about me and accusing me of things such as "she said another girl raped her" "oh she said another student gave her drugs" and me calling her such as a "slut" "whore" etc and the girls told other people not to talk to me. The girls that said that were my friends and told the counselor, and she did nothing about it. Another student(s) called me a cunt and said they would slit my throat and all they did was have a talk with them. Another girl accused me of cutting her hair and the staff just accused me. It got to the point when my mom removed me from the school. I will say some of the teachers were very nice, (such as my third grade teacher and second grade teacher.) J just had a bad experience here. Thanks for reading.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0Nov 16, 2023Previous reviewI used to go here, and i do not miss it. i left the school before my 5th grade year, and i had to leave due to rumors being said about me, and i was accused of saying that one of my old friends had raped me and gave my drugs, and the people that accused me of saying that, were two of my "friends" and the counselor did not help. In 3rd grade i got accused of cutting a girls hair, and the principal accused me before even asking me. I left the school, and i'm kinda glad. It's not a terrible school, I just think they can do better.

When my daughter first started going here in the first grade, things were great from grade 1-3. When she get in the 4th grade, all hell broke loose. This girl in her class was jealous of her and cut my daughter's hair off DURING CLASS. Her teacher Ms. Karjenian, did nothing about it. I think her teacher was/is racist towards people of color. Also the Principal did nothing. I asked them to switch my daughter to a different classroom and they didn't. I contacted a lawyer and he told me that I had a great case because my daughter was assaulted. Finally, I contacted the school district and was going to put my daughter in a different school, and it was at that point that they wanted to switch her class. Now my daughter is in the 5th grade still at Alvarado and there have been kids reading her about her weight, and bullying. They say that they have an anti bullying policy but that's all just a front so that they can raise money for the school. They don't do anything to the bully's at this school. Also, there was a boy in my child's class that kept messing with her everyday. She told her teacher and the teacher did nothing about it. Finally, I went up to the school and requested that my daughter's seat was changed and her teacher acted as if this was her first time hearing about this. She said that she would switch my child's seat after she stands up for herself in front of the teacher. I reminded the teacher of the anti bully policy and then she said that she would move her seat, so she finally did. Bully's get protected at this school. When the kids go to their teacher to report another student inflicting harm towards them, they ignore them and turn a blind eye. This has been my experience here.

This school is horrific. Kinder was great. Best teacher you could ask for. Ms M!!!!
1st grade however was a totally different story. It has been a nightmare since day one. We showed up 10 minutes before class started on the 1st day, and the teacher said your early. Not hi I'm miss so-and-so welcome to my class. No, just said your early and ignored us. RSP teacher is the main person I have issues with. Other parents at the school have witnessed her treating my daughter unfairly. The principal if you wanna call her that is a joke, she is very disrespectful to parents generalizes everybody and thinks it's cute. It is not people have names! We are not your mom! I have repeatedly asked her to quit referring to me as mom, as it is very disrespectful. When you drop your child off at school one of the volunteer attendance is a very grumpy woman with blonde hair probably close to 70 years old. She has a permant scowl on her face. This is no way to start your school day.
I best hope is that they would move the principal, and somebody did seriously need arise the RSP teacher and her behaviors. There is something seriously wrong with that department.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Cindy W.Long Beach, CA07521Jul 5, 2014
I work at Alvarado and am bias, for certain. I started working at Alvarado in 1990 as a third grade teacher. I have since taught 4th and 5th grade and was also a reading specialist.
The greatest thing about Alvarado is the family feel. We take care of and feel responsible for all the children. My own boys attended Alvarado and are now both in college. I'm thrilled with the education they received and they still speak fondly of their teachers, principal and experiences at Alvarado.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Ashley V.Signal Hill, CA318452Dec 6, 2016
Staff is good. The teachers are wonderful. My only problem is parking & student drop off.The school Entrance is close to cherry, not to far from street light. So if your walking from walnut it's an even longer walk to the Entrance. They have a roundabout not used convinently. It's only used for their 3-4 school buses.Student drop off is located on the curb side right next to the exit of the roundabout. It causes traffic also making it unsafe for the other cars that have to go around on opposite side of oncoming traffic.

I love the area but I don't think its a good street to have a school because as you see cars go down that hill on Cherry really fast and kids are crossing... scary thank god for crossing lady to assist kids to cross. The area is nice - right next to park, library, and police station. So that's convenient to have nearby.
