My visit to Addis was quite enjoyable, with delicious food and friendly service.
There were three of us in our party and we shared a veggie/meat combo and lamb tibs (pictured). Everything was delicious and our server made sure we had enough injera to keep enjoying our food.
This is probably because we got the sampler, but I was a little disappointed with the lack of the egg in doro wot. Having said that, it was great to see a meat sampler option (I've mostly only seen veggie samplers) because I got to try some items like the yebeg alicha that I had never ordered before.
Food took a while but I wasn't mad cuz it hopefully meant that our food was being prepared fresh.
If you've had Ethiopian food before, you probably know that John C.'s one-star review is totally unfair. It's not the restaurant's fault that he doesn't like injera.
It's a great no-frills restaurant to get your injera fix. Give them a try.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 22, 2018
We went there on a friend's recommendation, but we're highly disappointed.
The food comes out family-style. And to be honest, the food isn't horroble. The beef was fairly tasty. But anything non-meat related tasted either bitter or bland.
The bread used to pick up the food is this weird wacky sour tasting bread-substance. The taste was so bad that poisoned the rest of the food. Every bite I ate was tainted with this sour bitter gross bread taste.
For desert we had baklava, which wasnt bad. Sweet tasting and flaky. A bit hard.
If you love Ethiopian food, you might want to try this. I am not a fan.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 12, 2015
My 2nd time back here and it was great! Addis is one of the few ethio spots in DC that sell honey wine. You sleepin if you have not had it. We entered in and immediately I smiled seeing a beautiful older habesha woman preparing buna in their Ethiopian traditional attire. The aroma of fresh East African coffee beans is priceless.
Our waiter came and we ordered a bottle of wine and our entrees. I had the combo no. 2 which is a mixture of meat and vegetarian options. Shiro is my favorite (smashed lentil beans with spices). Our honey wine was great but unfortunately the sweetness attracts gnats. We had this issue today and I had that issue last time. Unsure, if this is controllable. The only reason for my knocking off a star. Can be irritating eating and waving them off.
Their food is great and seasoned well. The ambiance is great for most events whether it be a date, bday celebration or just a meal with family or friends.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 14, 2015
Tried the Lega Tibs, which is tender lamb cubes fried with spices, hot pepper and onions, it was pretty mild until you bite into one of those peppers that you may not have recognized as a pepper. The dish was very filling and very tasty.
The customer service was superb and right on point with everything from beverage, to food delivery to clean-up to check. I really appreciated the kindness of the servers and help with deciding what to order. I knew that I wanted lamb, but also wanted seafood. However, there was none to be found on the menu which is why that 5th star does not appear.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 8, 2015
Newest arrival on H Street, so new the long glass-tiled bar is dry cos no license yet! And yes you're gonna be scooping up your food with soft teff flatbread (injera), no forks to be seen so a meal at Addis means some serious carb loading. But don't worry if you like animal protein, the menu has beef, chicken and lamb entrees for about $14, and veg about $9.
Tried most of the veg by ordering combo #1, supposed to be 5 varieties for $13 but arrived with 6. Alas the shiro had run out so instead I got collards. Loved the defin miser (spicy lentils) and the yetimatim salad, also spicy.
Would be more of a fan if the food had arrived hotter (temp). My veg was more like lukewarm, a heated plate would go a LONG way here. The flatbread was flat-out cold. And the shiro (which did finally arrive) deserves a spoon, it's yummy but I find it annoyingly difficult to eat soup with injera.
Vegetarian rating: 5 stars for the 9+ choices including split peas, mild or spicy lentils, string beans & carrot, beets & potatoes, cabbage, potato & carrot, shiro (mixed bean sauce) and a tomato, onions, peppers & parsley salad called yetimatim. Collard greens are avail but not yet listed, oops. Definitely a destination for veggies!
This is a low-key casual place, very reasonably priced food, quiet enough for conversation, love the big round table in the center and the ceiling mosaics. Excellent friendly service too. But forgive me, I can't help thinking of the injera pieces as washcloths lol.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 2345471939Dec 1, 2016
This place is great!
I came here while partaking in the H Street Festival fun. Addis Ethiopian had a stand outside their restaurant and we tried their sambusas. I got the meat and my friend got the lentil. It was perfectly spiced and had the perfect crispness. Based on that alone, I knew that I had to go their for dinner.
After walking around, my friend saw Ethiopic and thought we should go there because Addis might be too crowded. Now, once I get a place in my head that I want to try, it's hard to change my mind but after him questioning whether or not there would be space, would we need reservations, can we sit outside, I was like bloody hell. I actually walked in Ethiopic* (I was beyond irritated) but he said let's go to Addis. There was no wait and we sat by the window. The servers were friendly and were helpful by providing suggestions. We got the veggie combo with beef tibs. To drink, I got the Meta beer and my friend got the St. George--the waitress said that 80% of patrons get the St. George but she prefers Meta (I preferred the Meta over the St. George--Meta had more body, IMO). The food was great! The beef wasn't grisly and had great flavor as were the veggies. There wasn't anything that I didn't like. Everything had spice (some items are spicy in terms of flavor and some are spicy in terms of heat, FYI). I also had spiced tea which was good but nothing Earth-Shattering. As far as service is concerned, it was on point. I'll be honest, I thought it was going to be super slow since they were selling food outside for the festival as well as inside but they were fast.
Good food, good service--sounds like a winning combination to me. I highly recommend Addis Ethiopian.
*I have nothing against Ethiopic--I've never been so I don't have an opinion on it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joe J.Madison, WI523432Aug 18, 2018
We had a celebration dinner with my brother before he went off, and it was fantastic. They served the 8 of us with no problems, the food came out just as quick as if it had only been 2 of us. A bummer that the coffee machine was off late at night, but otherwise everything was great.
And! I got to try Ethiopian honey wine! I didn't even know African mead existed, who'd have thought :D Great experience, would recommend, everyone was friendly.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Maryam T.Washington, DC2801873Dec 12, 2015
The food was delicious and the staff was very courteous and accommodating. The atmosphere is very welcoming and home like. I ordered the vegetarian combo 2 which came with split peas, spicy and mild lentils, tomatoes with jalapeños, cabbage, and potatoes with carrots. I took the picture of the vegetarian combo 1 because I had them change my meal so that I could get more food lol. I topped the meal off with a glass of honey wine. I highly
