I came into NYC fresh off a red eye and found this gem by my hotel. Everyone was lovely and friendly. Ana listened as I described what I needed, low maintenance but stylish and photo ready. She was quick and precise with the cut. I highly recommend a visit for your next cut! I'm going back to get my hair colored.

I'm sorry to not deal with this sooner. I was out of the country. Thank you Carlos. I know how valuable your time is.
My review is detailed and true to what occurred. There's no need to reiterate its contents only to say I do not scream at people. Since I was only in the same room with your manager for 9 minutes and Angelisa for 4 mins, I couldn't have talked let alone yelled at them for 30 mins. I'm beginning to think your salon has issues with understanding measurements of time.
At that time, you offered 30 min appts. When I decided to walk at 11:12, Angelisa still had her bag out with no coffee in hand. So why should I settle for a 15 min cut? Do I get 50% off?
I'm glad to learn she had the time to complete my cut, but I did not. People make appts b/c they have schedules. "Running late?" The operative word there is "running". Your employees were Sauntering Late.
What's not "proper" is to lie to your boss. Everything you characterize in your reply is untrue. If you truly believe what your response indicates, your employees are deceiving you.
Did you know NJT provides years of real time post arrive/depart data? To give them the benefit of the doubt, I checked NJT's sched. On that day, there were "the usual delays of 1-5 mins". Longer delays require a report. Is the NJT schedule algorithm the liar?
You think I never opened a business late? It happens. On the occasions when I was late, a waiting customer would know it was me once I hit the corner. They would have seen me rushing, find me humble and apologetic followed by a decent discount.
My last appt with Timothy Johns, the person before me changed her color plan resulting in a 10-15 minute delay on a 60 min appt. I was offered a reschedule but I had the time that day so I waited. I received a drink, a sincere apology, updates and a discount, none of which I had to request.
I did not write this for the purpose of being nasty. Nor it is only for other Yelpers. It is for you to know what goes on with your mice when you, the cat, are away. You can address those issues or not. Whatever you choose doesn't affect me in the least but it does affect you, directly.
I tell my family, replies are not to the complainer but the 1,000s who read it. It means people in Paris think my sister's defensive response to another's complaint is clueless to crazy. Now our 2 star Latin American beach hotel, complete with an authentic chiringuito, loses an unknowable amount of business. Just like the concentration of NYC salons, there's 20 others within a mile up and down the beach. Too much competition to screw it up simply because my sister's ego is bigger than her brain.
A few days after I posted my review, a girl from NJ opened a new Yelp account. Using a dog profile pic, she fabricated an ugly review for a biz she thinks I own. See attached photos.
I sold Couture du Jour. Other than an occasional visit, I have not been inside since 2019. The new owner, Dionne, was "By Appt Only" during this time. Her reply shows the deception. An accusation of racism is a disgusting thing to just toss around. It undermines true efforts to eradicate it.
If their intention was to interfere with this "white" lady's business, they achieved the opposite by attempting to hinder a black woman's business.
Not to rub it in, but they screwed that up by being too lazy to check the store out and ensure their lie would work. Appropriately, Yelp categorized it as "Not Currently Recommended". Even Yelp's algorithm knows they are not to be recommended.
My customers and employees came from all over the world. In 30 years, my 5 best salespeople, all of whom became managers, were POC, 1 of them from Mexico. Like many others of many languages, I helped her learn English. As a bi-lingual, 1st gen American, I have always employed immigrants, POC and women. I have an apt I've rented out at an unheard-of low rate just to help those I think will benefit. I try to be the change I want to see in this world.
And why would "this so-called Christine" (the racist!) go to a salon owned by a Latino where many of the employees are also of Spanish heritage? O es posible quiero ayudar un negocio Latino en mi barrio? No, it couldn't be that.
I'm assuming your manager is your gatekeeper. Her behavior during and after indicates any message I would have left would have been deleted without further attention. That's who you have running YOUR livelihood, YOUR reputation, and YOUR future. I have Timothy Johns. I'm all set.
I suspect you are the "easy going" boss who unintentionally caters to his employees vs his customers. You want a happy family atmosphere. I get it. However, you cannot let people who work FOR YOU, disrespect you and your business.
Good luck to you Carlos. I hope you sort it out. I hate to see any business in my beloved HK struggle or worse, go under. I'm happy to talk to you. You could have messaged me before replying. You still can.
Buen dia.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

We apologize our staff was running late that day, we are usually open earlier than 11:00 am. Our stylist tried very hard to start the service right away, she had the time to take care of your service without rushing your service, but you did not give us the chance to even talk to you. We take pride on our services and customer service but insulting us for a 5 minute lateness is not very proper. you spend almost 30 minutes at the salon insulting our staff and we tried to take care of you with all our respect. we wish you the best at your new salon of choice.
Sep 20, 2022Previous reviewI can't say anything about quality of cut. I left. They failed to open on time. Once open, they failed at everything else.
I grew up in family bizs & owned retail stores for 25+ years. Normally someone arrives at least 10-15 mins early to prepare to open. That is, if you want to open on time. Calo opens at 11am. I had an 11 with Angelis. At 11:03, I was still out-front waiting. No updates of any changes.
I kept looking for someone to pop out of a cab or rush from the subway. The 11am's are waiting! I didn't know she was the manager until she was at the door. Zero sense of urgency. No "So, sorry. I'll be right w/ you." More of an "I'm opening now, what's your problem?" I was irritated by her lackadaisical attitude esp since their appts are limited to 30 mins.
Door still isn't open when she asks me what I want as if an apology isn't the obvious choice. With an inability for her to suck it up, smile & apologize, she says, "Well, you've been talking the whole time. I didn't want to interrupt you." Wow! She fails miserably at the most important part of her profession: managing people, their time, & expectations. An upset customer is always happy to be interrupted by an apology. It's a reset.
Angelis saunters in at 11:08 & says hello to the manager. She didn't introduce herself, apologize or assure she would be w/ me in a min. She just wanders to the back. Seems being late is so acceptable that Angelis doesn't bother to apologize to her manager either.
The manager then tells me she was late herself b/c she lives in NJ & the trains were late. Really? You casually open a business late w/ a BS attitude & then tell the customer she should understand b/c the trains were late? I wanted to tell her to stop, that she was digging her hole deeper. I was embarrassed for her. She's a grown woman.
I explained to Angelis why I was leaving. I asked her how she expected to have me in a chair at 11am when she arrived at 11:08. It's now about 10-12 mins past 11am & she still has her bag out, on her way to getting a drink. I'm sure I'll hear I didn't give her enough time to put her things away. You're right. I didn't give her any more of MY time. A good manager helps a late stylist by grabbing her things & getting her a coffee so she could start doing her job ASAP. A little hustle and 2 genuine, unrequested apologies would have meant saving the client.
Embarrassingly, Angelis also gave me the train excuse. I asked them, did they just move here? Don't they not know about common, everyday transportation problems? Leave 10 mins earlier like ALL other working adults. "We live in NJ!" Angelis yelled. Evidently people from NJ do not have to be on time, inform when late, apologize when entering & get busy once they arrive. She acted as if I should say, "Oh I'm sorry. Did you have a bad morning? Let me get you a cup of tea."
I wonder if these two have the cajones to say this to the owner? Or does the fish rot from the head? Considering the attitude & complete lack of urgency, being late is normal here. A late manager = being there at 10:50. If you're TOO early, use that time to show why you should be a manager.
Being late = "My time is more valuable than yours'. I'm so important, others need to wait for me." I book early appts b/c late clients create afternoon waits. At Calo your appt will start late not due to the previous 4 clients but b/c the people who work there aren't concerned w/ your time. Does Calo expect us to arrive on time? Had I shown up 10 mins late, would I be told that appts are only 30 mins long & now I've already wasted 10 of them? Had I stayed, I probably wouldn't have seen a single cut before 11:20. Where must I be at 12pm? Calo doesn't care.
And if Calo is normally timely, why wouldn't the manager, while waiting for that late train, text all the 11am's to let them know? I was the ONLY person there so ONLY 1 text was required. With that text, I could have agreed to arrive a few mins later or reschedule. No other stylist was present either. So, are they all late or is there no business?
Here's a lesson in punctuality & appropriate responses. 10 years ago, I worked on a film w/ a household name producer/director. He was late one single time. The 1st thing he did was apologize to everyone waiting. His excuse, a very good one he DID NOT USE, was how the POTUS was on 10th Ave causing a huge traffic jam, info told to us later by the Location Manager. What was the only thing this incredibly powerful person said? "I'm sorry all of you had to wait for me. I know your time is valuable."
I've worked w/ awards/red carpets, Mags, TV, Movies, Broadway on & off, NYFW. The higher up you go, the less attitude there is, the more punctual they are. It's the halfway ups that think they are special enough to behave badly.
I learned today that Timothy John didn't go under during COVID. They moved. I have an appt on the 27th, 11:30. I know they'll be on time, even the ones from NJ. - Elizabeth B.Manhattan, New York, NY04Mar 20, 2024
I had a haircut/tone with Ana and it was really great! I don't leave reviews often but I honestly can't say enough great things. She really took her time and thought through what I wanted for my hair. The result came out exactly how I imagined it.

I went for a appt on 11/10 at 3:30. I got a hair cut and blow out. While the stylist was curling my hair she burnt my forehead.
At that time I didn't think It was that bad so I didn't say anything. Also accidents happens. But the stylist didn't apologize or try to make it better.
I paid with no tip and left. This picture was taken on the 13 and the spit is still sore and red. I would've left it at this but then on my last review the owner left this comment.
She did not apologize to me once nevertheless twice. We barely talked after the initial meeting and discussing what I wanted done. Nor did the owner speak to me during my appt so I don't know how he knows I was satisfied with the results. He was across the room busy with his own appt the entire time.
This is a poor excuse to try and make your business look better. I would've just settled for an apology and we'll do better next time. Not some half assed lies.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information

Hi Greyson, We feel so sad to read reviews like this. We were here at the time of the service (Calo Studio owners) and remember the situation well, The stylist who did your hair clearly said sorry to you twice. ("I'm sorry, I'm so sorry sweetie") We take pride on giving the best service at our establishment and our stylists are great at what they do. I did ask if you were satisfy with the result and you seemed happy. If other wise I would have jumped in until full satisfaction or in this case to apologize to you one more time. Have a great day.

I wish I could pack up the whole staff and bring them back with me to Chicago. Carlos did exactly what I wanted with my cut and color and it turned out great! The staff was fun and friendly and you could tell it's a great environment to work in which always carries over into great service. They make you feel special and I walked out feeling amazing.
It was easy to set an appointment online and the multiple services offered ensured I had plenty of time booked for what I wanted. Tips are cash but they do also accept Venmo or Zelle.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Since moving to NYC two years ago I've struggled to find a salon that does a great coloring & cut job and doesn't overcharge, but thankfully I found Calo. I've been three times so far (soon to be 4!) and each time I feel so much more confident with myself. Hair can really transform how you feel, and I've always felt better after visiting Calo. I even trusted them to do my hair for my sister's wedding, and so many people complimented me on it.
The salon is always clean and bright, the employees are kindhearted, the music is always fun, and there's a coffee shop next door if you need a mid-coloring- appointment pick me up .
I currently live in the area but am moving to Brooklyn later this year, however I'll still travel over just to get my hair done. This place is a gem.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Absolutely obsessed with my hair. Been seeing Scarlett for the last couple years, and I never want to see another stylist!
Her cuts are always amazing, and her coloring is stellar. She's fixed bad cuts I've gotten from others, fixed coloring mistakes I've made on myself, and brought all kinds of new hair ideas & inspo to life over the years! She's also incredibly funny, kind, and always does her job with love.
My hair has never felt better! Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

I just had the best haircut that I've had in a long time, after seeing the owner Carlos. My hair stylist that I had been seeing for 15 years moved away from the City pre-pandemic, which I had tried a few others after at same salon on the east side, but they really messed up my hair to the degree that my hair was shorter on the left side by 2 inches. I looked on Yelp for hair stylist that had experience with various hair textures, and with wavy, heavy hair, which Calo came up as #1 in the City. I was a little hesitant, since it seemed to good to be true, but I figured, "what did I have to lose?", two more inches
I'm so happy that I found this place in my hood because the service from the entire staff, the friendliness, and the amazing cut made my day. I highly recommend Carlos Lopez and he'll be the only one that I will see for now on.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Just got my second cut and blowout from Viviana! I came here for the first time in August after years of living in NYC and not finding any hair stylists that made me want to come back. I tried a few different salons with my classpass membership and was blown away by Calo. It's a great salon in Hell's Kitchen, smells amazing inside, and has the kindest staff.
Viviana is incredibly precise, personable, and talented. I appreciate that she makes genuine recommendations for my type of hair and face shape as opposed to doing what I ask even if it's not the best for me. After my first cut here, I received tons of compliments. The cut grew out beautifully and doesn't need to be styled any certain way to look good. So thrilled with my second cut as well. Just wanted a refresh to keep the cut from round one and I was so happy that I received the same quality of services again! I'll be back :)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information
