I love this restaurant. Every time we come, the staff is so friendly and courteous. Tonight, there weren't many waitresses on staff. Faye came over and helped extend her service. She even offered us a complimentary dip for our troubles and the wait. She was kind, helpful and personal. We did the bacon wrapped shrimp which came on a Chile and cheese bed. For the main course, we had the Fajitas for two. The food we had was good. However, I'd frequent this restaurant for Faye's hospitality and personality alone. Thanks for being so friendly and giving us great service.

We came here for my niece's 21st birthday dinner. She called ahead to give the headcount. We ended up with 17ppl, which they had to add 2 more tables to our party. The waitress was nice but she kept bringing us chips and salsa because they were taking a while making our food. I ordered the Chicken Chimichanga. It was good but would have tasted better if it wasn't room temperature.
I ordered the Swirl (Sangria and Frozen Margarita) as my drink and was very surprised at how tasty it was.
The waitress did a great job. Although the manager helped pull the tables together for our group, he looked agitated, but never came over to the table to ask if everything was okay.
Overall, it was a good visit. I would recommend the restaurant and would frequent it but it is 40 minutes from my home.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

This restaurant definitely has given their full in terms of decor and atmosphere.
For starters we were offered chips with three different salsa's - green chili, mild and spicy salsa which was really good.
For main course we ordered "Chicken Fajita Chimichanga" which comes with black beans and Mexican rice which was cold and the cheese was stuck to the tortilla which wasn't even tossed to be honest & chicken lacked flavor too which was a disappointment. We also ordered the "Shredded Chicken Taco" which in all literal sense was bland and it was tortilla instead of hard shell taco which wasn't mentioned anywhere which again was a disappointment.
Servers are really friendly though.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Stopped here on a business trip to KC and was impressed with the friendly service and gluten-free offerings. There was a 20-minute wait for a table so my coworker and I grabbed seats at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and helpful with the gluten-free options.
There are not many gluten-free options but the ones available give GF diners a broad range from which to choose, well beyond the salads that can be found at some restaurants. I chose the fajitas with vegetables. The corn tortillas were great and held together the veggies, guac and pico. The serving size of the veggies was fantastic.
While we were waiting for our food, we got the chips -- including a baked variety for me, which did not get cooked in the fryer that has some gluten-infested food go through.
Kudos to Abuelo's for its fast, friendly and allergen-helpful service and food.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

A decent place for tex-mex. The best thing were the chips and dip! You get three different kinds of dip: salsa verde, red mild salsa, and spicy red salsa. I could basically eat those chips and dip all evening if possible, and definitely don't need to contemplate appetizers because the chips and dip were so good in it of itself.
I had the chicken fajitas -- overall very tasty! You get a lot of meat for the fajitas, plenty to eat with the soft tortillas they provide. I'm very bad at rationing my meats and veggies so I ran out of tortillas quite quickly! I suggest taking the salsas and topping your fajitas with them to provide and extra kick!
My boyfriend had the carnita tacos -- they come with two per order, but they are certainly packed and overflowing with toppings. His meal also came with sides to eat along with the meal.
Overall our food was decent and portions were good. Our waitress could be a little more deligent wiht refilling our waters as the spicy red salsa was way more spicier than I had anticipated, yet sooooooo addicting. However, I would return here again to get my tex-mex fix.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

One of our favorites, but hadn't been in a while. They weren't too busy tonight...it was before 6pm on a Sunday.
Service was slow and average at best. The food took a while, and we could overheat other tables commenting on that also.
Food was ok. I just really want that impressed. Even the chips and salsa weren't as good as I remember.
Tonight was our anniversary...and dinner didn't add to the day.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Oh em geee... tried this place out for the first time today because it came well recommended and to say that I was not disappointed would be an understatement.
Dinner tonight was exactly what I didnt know I wanted coming into it. I had the Pork Tenderloin Abrigada which is one of the House Specialties. In short, everything about my main course was delicious. You get three bacon wrapped tenderloins and a choice of any two enchiladas. I recommend the carnitas in green tomatillo sauce and the shredded beef in spicy red sauce. Both extremely flavorful and you'll get a nice contrast from the sauces in your meal. This also came with pinto beans which were good (not great but still good) and some sort of spicy mashed potatoes? I was confused that my "mexican food" was served with mashed potatoes to begin with but after tasting, zero gripes about this. The potatoes were just as good as the other main parts of my dish - somehow they were cheesy, creamy, full flavored with a hint of spiciness to it and they totally make it work!
Cons: Price points are a little higher compared to other Mexican restaurants, this dish was about $18 alone. The hostess seemed like she really didn't want to be there but maybe she was having a bad day. Their chips and salsa game could use some revamping - I get that you wanna offer three sauces but maybe perfect one before branching out on table sauces? Lastly, the food took a little longer than expected based on how full the restaurant was.
Overall very happy with my visit, I would definitely come back and order the same thing more than likely.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

I've passed by this place in nearly every city I've been and always thought it's just another chain... it's not!
Abuelo's is a well decorated and very professionally run establishment with very friendly and helpful staff. Three of us went for lunch and every one of us left extremely satisfied.
For starters, they bring out chips with three different salsas. Our lunch was ordered and delivered very quickly with quality ingredients and packed full of flavor.
Pictured is the Durango burrito backed with juicy and tender shredded beef. Atop the flour tortilla is a generous smothering of chile con queso served with guacamole and I upgraded to the cheesy potatoes.
The menu is filled with many offerings and I will be back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

I am very disappointed with Abuelo's recently. We come to KC about once a month and I couldn't wait to come to visit this place. This time we were so disappointed, we decided we probably won't be back. When we got here at about 8 pm, the bar was filthy. There were partially eaten food plates and dirty drink glasses covering almost every seat at the bar. I felt they didn't want new customers to sit down, so they just didn't clean up. We found two semi-clean spots at the corner of the bar and ordered a margarita and draft beer. But all the draft was out of order and not expected to be fixed for about 5 days. This just seems like bad management. We were instead offered a bottle of beer which was in a bucket full of ice water - the beer was hardly cold. We each had a partial drink and left. And, unfortunately, we won't be back. So disappointing.

Mar 30, 2018Previous reviewWe came here one night simply for margaritas before dinner and we're glad we did. We are huge fans of Corona Light and rarely find it on draft - but they have it on draft here!!! It was a great surprise. I was still in the mood for a margarita, so had a house margarita first and it was surprisingly strong - I had quite the buzz from one. The chips and salsa were good - the green salsa was amazing with pineapple.
The first night we came here we ordered some happy hour appetizers. The nachos were yummy, each chip topped with beans and cheese and came with guac, pico, and sour cream for dipping and jalapenos on the side. We also had the jalapeno cheese fritters and street taco. Everything was good.
After we ate, we went shopping at Zona Rosa, then came back for more Corona Light - lol.
We decided to come here the second night for more drinks and ended up meeting with friends and eating here again. This time we had the Abuelo's Dip Sampler and the queso was amazing. For dinner shared the fajitas because somebody the night before ordered them and they smelled so good.
Next time we are in KC, we will be back for sure!
