Sea Star Hair Salon

I called to make an appointment with Ken at Sea Star Hair Salon. I asked about services for African-American hair. I was asked what day and time I would prefer. I made an appointment over the phone. I also asked about how far away the services are from my condominium. I was sent a text that included the address. Upon my arrival at the salon on the day of my appointment, I was greeted by Josephine. Ken was waiting for me. There were no other people in the salon area except Schmoopie (my darling Husband) and myself. It's adjacent to the main structure or house. There is a sign. I noted that Ken is very skilled as it is stated that he has over 20 years experience on the Yelp page for his business. There is a nicer salon chair inside Sea Star Hair Salon. I didn't notice at first... but there are lots of plants on the shelves inside. I felt like I was welcomed and I was treated with respect. I spoke with Josephine for a bit in Japanese. She said she is originally from Taiwan. I haven't practiced Japanese for a few years. I noticed that there was contemporary music playing on a device... maybe a nicer stereo or radio tuner is set up. I don't think I heard the call letters and numbers while I was inside the salon. Ken spun the salon chair around and showed me how much hair was on the floor (I got a trim so there was very little). After my service I asked Ken if he has a Square to collect payment. He went and got it. Schmoopie paid Ken. Schmoopie (my Husband) parked on the street in front of a nicer evergreen tree (it is some kind of Blue Spruce). I will be back. I recommend making an appointment with Sea Star Hair Salon it is worth the trip and you would be wise to have Ken do your hair services.

I have been going to this hair salon since I was 9 years old and I am always happy when I leave with a new haircut. I am 23 now and still prefer going to his salon over anothers'. This review is long overdue but this place really deserves the praise. Ken pays all his attention to his client's hair & is gentle when handling it.

I've gotten a perm (tight curls) done by him a few years ago and I absolutely loved it. It was my first time doing anything other than a haircut and my hair still felt bouncy and silky. I have thick, straight Asian hair. Once I grew out my hair, I didn't notice any difference with my natural hair texture/color. He does a great job with making sure the process doesn't dry out your hair and takes his time. His attention to detail makes you feel at ease.

The salon is nothing fancy but it is homey. He has truly mastered his craft and can tell his expertise when you sit on the seat.

Fit me in the schedule within the same day. Received the best detailed layered haircut in Portland and got to still keep my length! Great service and prices!!

I'm literally sitting in kin's chair right now as he is cutting my hair, it's so good that I have to say something. First off, starting off with the place, to some people, it may not be as polish as most "high class" beauty salons, but the way they embellish the salon with very china antiquey vibe with a twist of modern feels, it gives the salon such a fascinating character.
But what really amazed me is how dedicated and gentle his cutting style are, I'm such a tender head that anybody can tug a small piece of my hair, I will tear up. But without knowing that, he automatically cut my hair with a concern hand in mind. And he typically will stop in the middle and to make sure that he's not going over board ( I showed him a photo from Pinterest) I was getting it cut shorter since my hair was growing long. Also he's a quiet cutter and focus finely into details, super relaxing. Either way, 5 stars for the pleasant experience and im all about loving what you're doing and you can definitely tell that he does.
It's such an underrated salon that I need to shed some spot light into this place.

I went in asking for a blonde to black ombre. I have naturally blonde hair and they bleached the end and then dyed the ends silver. It's not even close to what I wanted..

Just got the best haircut of my life!

If you have wavy or super thick hair, it definitely needs a lot of layers and texture...

Unfortunately, this is something a lot of stylists go too conservatively on or don't nail at all.

Kin did a FANTASTIC job. He listened, looked at the photos of examples, and gave me the most perfect layers and texture I've had in a very long time. It is a very clean and quiet salon- not fancy or over the top. Environment doesn't matter much to me- I'm just looking for a good haircut.

Kin also cut my son's hair. Kin worked very quickly (a smart move when dealing with a squirmy toddler) and gave him awesome cut too.

Sea Star Salon is totally a hidden gem. I highly recommend it- especially if you need something that is a little more advanced as far as style and haircuts go!!!!

I called and scheduled an appointment, but when I got there, no one was there. The place was locked up tight. I called again and the gentleman said he'd be there in 5 minutes. 30 minutes later, he showed up. The cut is a little shorter than I wanted, but the layers are good. I'd have given 4 stars of not for the wait.

Always my go to place for haircut. The hairstylist paid attention to details and not trying to rush through haircut.

Picked up phone and dropped call. How unprofessional. Just unheard of. I will not be visiting them in the future

I been coming to this for years now to get my perms done, Kin and Josephine, the owners, are super nice people, Kin does always great job with my hair and makes sure I walk out of there happy, and I always do, I always walk out with a smile on my face, they have great prices and they always work with your schedule. I totally recommend this place.
