I haven't adopted from here (yet) but I came in for a visit earlier this week and I must say this is the cleanest, quietest, most pleasant shelter I've been to (and I've been to many).
The nice lady at the front desk was happy to let us (myself with three kids in tow) take a peek at the cats and dogs for adoption. No one gave me the third degree or rushed us to leave, they just graciously allowed us to see the animals and take our time.
I noticed that the number of animals was quite few, maybe ten dogs and eight cats were there that day. There was no urine smell or feces laying around, so I could tell the animals cages and kennels are cleaned frequently.
I took the time to check the prices for adoption, and they're quite reasonable! It's a much better way to go than supporting a backyard breeder on Craigslist.
I can't wait to come back when it's time to adopt!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Lucero C.San Francisco, CA01May 9, 2024

What the hell is someone supposed to do when an injured animal shows up on their doorstep on a Sunday? Is there no emergency number other then 911?

Sutter county animal control is completely useless and unresponsive to the needs of the community. Considering the amount of property taxes paid, one would think they could provide even a tiny bit of service. But no. They won't do ANYTHING without charging a fee. They also make up their own rules. I was told by one employee if you feed a stray cat for 14 days it becomes your cat and you are responsible for it. Where is that written? They wont take stray or feral cats and offer absolutely no assistance, only advice is "don't feed them". They say they are full up and can't take anymore animals. I see in other places, like sacramento, when they get near capacity they waive adoption fees to encourage people to adopt, but not sutter county. They don't lift a finger to help the citizens of this community. I've never seen a lousier public agency in my life.

They and the nearby county are useless in helping rid my property of feral cats or helping to trap and relocate

Today I came in to get my dogs and let me tell you they made it impossible for me to get them out. You would think they would be happy to get the animals back to there owners. Instead they make so many fees and what's going on with this world and how expensive everything is. They almost make it impossible to get the dogs that do have homes and owners who want them back because it's to expensive to get them out.
There customer service is so Horrible too. The old lady in the front name Susie (I think that her name) , she was easing her voice at me and basically telling mw if I can't get $375 by next Tuesday, my dogs become there dogs and I was trying to explain I can get paid next Wednesday. I absolutely cried and cried. Instead of helping me she just made things worse.
And let me tell you about the blonde animal control officer. He's a complete A whole ( excuse my language) he yelled at me and told me had betters things to do then wait around when I told him to come to the front of the office when he had my other dog and I was in front grabbing paper work , he threw my other dog in with my friends and kids in my car and yelled at me, he telling me can't wait around. He's been rude since day 1.
The animal shelter needs to replace these workers and get ones who have compassion. This animal shelter make its absolutely harder to get the animals back to there owners. It's so sad and I promise you my animals will never get out again so I don't have to deal with them. This was a complete accident of them getting out the first time ever. Remind you I had one dog for 13 years and one dog for 3 years and first time ever getting to animal control.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Vivi C.SoMa, San Francisco, CA01May 22, 2023
appalling. We almost ran over a kitten still in the nursing stage in the middle of the road. We rescued her and then spent the next 3-4 hours trying to find a rescue to take her in since animal control is apparently never open in this city. We arent even from in town, we are from Monterey and im allergic to cats so we couldnt take it in. Finally called non-emergency after calling vets, rescues and animal control multiple times. They told me that animal control would not come out unless the kitten was injured. I started to cry because at this point I was stressing out and this was my last hope. I asked her if she had any suggestions on how to handle this situation and she told me to release the cat back on the streets. Like great, Ill call back in 15 minutes once its run over and then you can come get it. No point of having animal control if their solution is to put them back on the streets.

This shelter has first-come-first-serve adoptions, they spay/neuter and microchip animals prior to adoption. I called on a Friday afternoon about a dog, and since I live a couple hours away, the phone receptionist Crystal was extremely helpful in answering all my questions about the dog and communicating what time I should arrive the next morning to ensure I would be able to adopt the dog without another person walking in ahead of me. The staff is professional and courteous, letting me interact with the dog in an enclosed area first, and then guiding me through a quick and easy adoption process. They even let me take some of their dog food so I could transition the dog's diet. Thanks to the staff for a great adoption experience.

I must say that over the years that I've dealt with this place the employees have been cocky and rude.
Last week I woke up to a dead cat in my backyard. I called around 9 a.m. and the girl was actually friendly, she said somebody would be out. Around 11 a.m. I called for the second time to ask if she could give me a time frame when they would be out, because there was things I needed to do and I needed to leave home, she said there wasn't so I stayed home the entire day. At 4:45 pm I called again for the third time she said even though they were closed they could still show up as they still go on calls.
This was on Wednesday on Saturday afternoon they finally showed up REALLY! This is pathetic ....Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Patricia S.Yuba City, CA07Jul 8, 2018
I found a Female German Shepherd. She was lose on the street. No collar. It was on Sunday.I called YCPD and they came out an called Sutter Animal Control. I wanted to adopt the dog if no owner found. I called the next day and was told I would have to wait at least ten days. I did, and every day I checked out their web page about found pets. When time was up I called and asked about the dog. I was told she wouldn't be adoptable. They said she was aggressive and put her down. I was floored. She wasn't aggressive when I found her. She was scared. She was lost,And then she was taken to a strange place, put in a cage, and then killed. If I would have known Sutter County would kill her, I would have taken her home right then and there when I found her... I was so upset.
I walked through the center a week or so later and the dogs that were available for adoption were way more aggressive than she was. There were pit bulls charging the gates, and were out for adoption. Go figure. That Shepherd Pup was just scared, and if someone worked with her she could have been a wonderful pet. Sad. I had thought that Sutter County was a NO KILL shelter. Sadly not true.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
