While the servers were very cordial and nice, and the atmosphere is pleasant, the food was just not good.
Their yellowtail jalapeno appetizer is deep fried with cream cheese... And no, it doesn't mention that on the menu.
If you are a fan of this appetizer, then you know typically it's fresh (raw) yellowtail slices, in a ponzu or similar sauce, with slices of jalapeno on top.
It's fresh, light, and a good way to judge the upcoming dishes. I wish I had ordered that without ordering anything else, as I would never have expected it to be deep fried with cream cheese!
Their crab is fake crab, which is typical, but to have it *in* and *on* a roll is the epitome of mediocrity. The escolar was stringy and chewy, which is just downright strange.
Can't recommend.
Positives: The eel was decent, the house wine was cheap, and as I said, the waitresses were nice. -
Whilst I would normally give this spot 3 stars, I have to give it 4 for the jovial atmosphere! Our waitress was just amazing - on the spot when we needed her and taking care of everyone - a genuine person with a great smile!
We came for the fishbowl beer as my hubby went to grad school at WVU yet had not heard of the place :O We also got the salsa which was fun to eat, and enjoyed watching the young men play the game of tossing quarters in the jar at the bar. A good way to spend an hour+ in an old, interesting-looking area of Morgantown. -
We moved here 5 months ago and I was torn on making a decision when searching the salons. I chose Jacky's because of all the pretty, colorful images - and because it's literally catty-corner to my apartment!
On my first visit, I was easily won over by Jacky's calm confidence and desire to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. He was nervous that I wanted so many colors, but did a Fantastic job! (Images of the red and pink hairdo!) - He was also really friendly and I enjoyed chatting with him and learning about his life.
My second trip Jacky did my hair again, this time light purple and pink. Sadly, the pink was super light and faded immediately, so he touched it up for me the next week for free! So awesome!
On my third trip, I got David to do my hair - as he had just recently cut my husband's hair and it looked, to be blunt, bad ass!
Together we picked out amazing colors and he went to work.
These colors are the longest lasting I've ever had!! and just gorgeous!! (the dark purple, pink, and green).
They are still incredibly bright over a month after - almost having not faded at a ALL.
I can't wait to go back and have David do another amazing work of art on my hair!! However, since he did such an incredible job, I won't have to go back for a while! (Which, considering this lock-down, is fortuitous!)
If you're looking for a salon, look no further! You won't be disappointed and their prices are REALLY fair! -
Look, if I had been on top of my Yelp game recently, my prior 6 visits would have shown me giving this place a 4 or 5 star rating (probably 5 this first time, and maybe 4 stars the 5th & 6th) - but the 7th, being CHRISTMAS EVE - and TERRIBLE - it brings this down to 2.
And "Meh" is being kind.
A terrible meal on any other, regular night - maybe I'd just note that there is always room for improvement and think, "hey, everyone has an off night."
But if your 'off night' is Christmas Eve, one of the most special nights of the entire year, and one you've been promoting to your Facebook fans, that is just entirely wrong.
And it isn't because I don't like fish or other creatures from the sea... (is it was the "feast of the seven fishes" - it was because each dish was terribly prepared.
I had high hopes, as I have absolutely loved the preparation of TUNA TARTAR from their regular menu the three times I've had it.
What came with the Christmas Eve dinner, though, was brown, smelly, and tasted super off. My husband and I took one bite each and were afraid we were going to get food poisoning! (TMI: we did have to go straight home b/c we both got the runs).
The SQUID was inedible - it was so chewy you could not even cut it with a knife. The third fish on this 3-'fish' dish was like a strange, coarsely texture paste.
The UNI RAVIOLI, I was told, had become a very popular dish. While, to me, uni (which is creamy and often somewhat briny) being paired with tomato sauce was an odd choice, I thought it might be done well and interesting as their other food I've had has always been good. But if it is normally well-received by patrons my guess is that it, too, was just prepared incorrectly on the night of Christmas Eve.
I barely ate my fish and mussels when it arrived. Over-salted, who cares, I was done at that point.
I asked the waiters and, when the manager came over, I asked her why everything was so inconsistent with the quality of their normal fare. Her response was to send us dessert.
Did you miss what I said about the quality? The dessert was no good either, btw.
I want to reiterate I've been here 7 times. 4 other times for food, 2 for drinks. I loved their tuna tartar and pork buns in the past. My husband loved their burger. The shishitos weren't my thing (dressed too much with mango pico and bland cheese) but were OK.
This dinner, whilst it did not ruin my Christmas Eve, did ruin, absolutely, my faith in this restaurant and my desire to return - which really is a shame (for me) as I had found it a comforting and solid spot before.
If you're going to continue doing Holiday dinners, Black Barn (and you clearly are), please bring your A game - even for those of us who have early 5 PM reservations on Christmas Eve. -
So, it's basically been 10 years since I've been to L'Express - or at least since I last reviewed it. I did go for lunch on a random Sunday in early August, and wasn't wow'd by the lamb burger, but presumed that was a one-off, or just me.
This past Saturday, the hubby and I decided to go - because he wanted a burger and I wanted - who knew what?
I was happy to see a foie gras torchon as an appetizer, as that is my second-favorite, or perhaps tied, version of foie gras (I do love foie gras pate)! It wasn't bad, by any means, but it was very bland. It crumbled instead of sliced, which is fine.... had it a better creamy-sherry-gamey flavor it would have been excellent. What it was, truly, was bland. So who wants to eat all that fat and calories for nothing?
Just skip it.
My husband really enjoyed his burger. It was done well so no real complaints from me. Our fries came out soggy so I asked for new ones, and while still a bit soggy, they were better.
The star of the show was the steak tartar. They really know what they're doing with this one. An excellent mix of soft, creamy beef, onions, possibly capers? It had great taste and texture in each bite. I would highly recommend this as a starter or a main. Their sour dough bread was excellent a well.
The other star of the night was by far our waitress - she was attentive, kind, friendly, and let us love birds sit around well after our meal to enjoy the vibe of L'Express and each other's company. I of course forget her name, but she was wonderful.
L'Express, I am still glad you are open 24 hours, and could accommodate us at 9 PM despite a very busy restau with what looked like a fair amount of Fashion Week peeps.
LMK if you up your foie gras game! -
My husband just found out this place existed about 3 and a half hours ago.
We wandered in just before 6 PM on a Friday and were happy to be seated - particularly in retrospect. This spot should be packed full every night!
We started with a glass each of expertly-executed kir royals, which were accompanied by Gougères (cheesy, buttery little bread puffs) - just like one might find at any good spot in Paris.
From there we moved on to try the "small" order of escargot as a litmus test - which seemed generous at 6 perfectly cooked snails in what tasted to be a parsley-heavy garlic sauce. Of course it came with the perfect, porous bread. This dish informed my husband we would be ordering what we hoped would be just as good:
For me, it was the home made foie gras terrine. I am obsessed with such, and was amazed. With flavors of cherries (one suspects from the port and brandy), and almost perfect texture... I have only had a couple foie gras that came close in my life, and that's saying something. (It's amazing I'm not 200lbs)..
My husband had the walleye which was cooked to be tender, with a crispy skin, atop delicious, creamy sauce with many notes, and a side of potatoes with leeks and other goodies inside. Really, for a Friday in Sheboygan, this is a fish special not to be missed.
Finally, we finished our extravagant meal with the specialty dessert of the day - raspberry macaroons with a small taste of muscadet wine.
I've had macaroons, again, all over the place - and these were amazingly well-executed. Delicious, with just the right crunch, sweetness, and richness. The muscadet was a perfect pairing.
Going back next week for a tasting menu.
Thank you, Mr. Cagnant, for bringing your corner of France to our small corner of Wisconsin!
PS: Our New Years resolution was 'opulence, extravagance, and excess', and this was a great dinner to start out the first month of the year with! -
Only been here once but, this place gets flying colors for their Pork Kim chi alone!
What an interesting and well-done dish!
The broccoli that came with it wasn't exciting, but that was fine b/c it seemed healthy. Everything else was flavored well and super fun.
That was my husband's meal.
I had the moo goo gai pan. Very good indeed. Just what you'd want - not amazing but not bad. Just good.
The wonton soup left something to be desired, and the bubble tea was more tea than taro flavor, but it was a good experience and I'd certainly return. -
We really enjoyed our first trip to The Vanguard!
We only had the Greek style sausage but, for even me who is not a huge fan of le saucisson, it makes me want to come back and try so many more!
Delicious, meaty, with all the right accouterments!
not to mention a chill, interesting atmosphere and good beer n wine selection.
If only we were cocktail people!!
(And lived in MKE!) :) -
This place is just the best.
I have taken my parents and my in-laws here b/c it really is just an amazing, happy place that always delivers!
Great service from the staff, either table or bar, is something you can count on. And the food is amazing from the Patriot or Irish Point oysters, to the fantastic lobster roll with delicious fries (can't get enough), to the grouper sandwich or grouper dinner plate... This spot would be a win in *any* city - including NY or Boston, which are known for their seafood.
Throw in their 'salmon crack' or - far better yet - their 'reuben' style smoked salmon - and you'll be a believer.
Also super yummy - their mussels and calamari.
But for me? I'll likely never stray from their oysters, lobster roll, and if it's Sunday, a split of the sparkly!
This place always makes me happy. -
This review is just for their recent summer addition of tacos to the menu for the winery/patio.
I have had better tacos at a taco truck... a taqueria... a taco place in New York City (New York City!?).
Considering my prior reviews for The Blind Horse, you guys can imagine how bad these must be to warrant any such sort of update.
For the prices they charge, they really need to bring their A-game, but they dropped the ball with this one. (Enough sports references?)
Two tacos for $12 would be fine if they were of any decent quality at all, but they are greasy, boring, sub-par, and will ultimately ruin your enjoyment of Blind Horse.
We had the Avocado Tostada (pickled onion, fried pork belly, diced tomato, cilantro queso fresco, jalapeno crema) and the Brisket Taco (smoked mustard glazed brisket with roasted red pepper sweet corn relish, salsa verde, jalapeno crema). In this instance, the photos I posted in the photos section actually *do* tell the story as well as my words, if not more so.
Also, considering how much I loved their pulled pork tostada small plate back in July of last year, it makes the taco travesty even more devastating. (I posted a photo of that as well to show the difference.)
