Good Morning,
I have been a Safeway Customer dating back to the early 90s as my grandmother used to drag me to the Minnesota Avenue/Benning Road, Washington, DC location during her random shopping trips. On a recent trip to Safeway (490 L St NW, Washington, DC), I realized years of support aren't enough to remove profiling.
I am a black male that had a black shirt on, with a grey bookbag (It is sad that I even have to say this).
I walked into your store around 10 PM, looking for a steak to grill this weekend. I looked through the steaks and didn't find anything to my liking, so I turned around and walked towards the exit. As I was near the exit, I was stopped by a security guard.
Guard: What did you put in your bag?
Me: Nothing. What were you told I put in my bag?
Guard: I got a page to check the bag of the man that was walking from the meat department
Me: Just check the cameras, I didn't take anything from your store.
I understood the guard was simply doing his job, so I was not mad with him. However, I question why someone felt the need to demand that the guard checked my bag.
But the crazy thing is I witnessed 2 others walk right out of the store, with bags, that didn't get questioned. I never felt more disrespected in a store that I have supported for such a long time.
In the future, Safeway, please have probable cause before you tell your security guards to check customers' bags.
Enjoy your day.
I tasted DDP for the first time at the 2016 H St. Festival and I was impressed with the Chicken Pot Pie. For the next few weeks, I would randomly think about going to the store to pick up a slice. On 10/1/16; I decided to make that happen.
Me: Do you have a menu?
Hans: It's right up there on the board. (No eye contact made)
Me: Ok. (Goes to look at menu and sees these pies named after people/places/things but not saying what is actually IN the pies)
Me: So how am I supposed to know what is IN these pies? That is why I asked if there was a MENU
Hans: (Shrugs shoulders and smirks) I can just tell you
So I decide to talk to the other worker on duty (Who tells me she is the manager. Red Haired woman) What is wrong with your boy?
Her: Sorry, we are just so busy right now. Is there anything we can help you with.
Me: I am just wondering why he is acting like that
Her: Sorry, we are just so busy right now.
So I guess being busy gives you an excuse to be rude to someone that wants to spend their money in your store?
We decided not to eat here because of this.
It also doesn't help that I am seeing other reviewers speak on the lack of respect this place gives their customers.
Maybe I will try another location at a different time but I was irritated from this
I visited San Francisco about a year ago and I stumbled into this place. Before walking in, I appreciated how many masks were out on display OUTSIDE of the store. Then I walked in and saw many more masks.
I decided on a Blue Demon Jr. mask as a souvenir to myself to take back to DC.
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about historical lucha libre, so that was a bonus.
If you are a pro wrestling fan in this area, you need to make a stop here.
Food: Probably the best TUrkey Burger I have ever eaten in my life. I don't like when people speak in hyperbole (I think we do it too often) but this turkey burger was well seasoned and it wasn't dry. I got the same exact meal both times I came here. Turkey Burger with the side salad. I was very satisfied with my food on both occasions.
Atmosphere: Basic sports bar. TVs all around so if you want to come catch a sporting event, this is the place for you.
Workers: First Visit: Our server was very accommodating and checked on us often.
Second Visit: We sat in the upstairs area to watch Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. There wasn't a waitress on duty, so the bartender instructed us that we should come up to the bar to order everything. I have no issue with this. The only issue I have is she needs to go to Chik-Fil-A Customer Service training. She displayed some of the worst facial expressions (annoyed/bothered/burdened) that I have seen in a while. I understand that she is not a server, but she was a worker and she should have a more pleasant demeanor when serving other humans.
I was driving from Fredrick, MD and was looking for some pizza while on the way back to DC. This place was one of the first that came up on YELP, so I decided to make a stop.
Food: I enjoy light, airy, soft pizza crusts. I also enjoy char on my pizza crusts. This is the first place that I recall that has given me both. The crust was so soft but it wasn't too doughy. The crust had a nice crisp/char to it, but it wasn't overdone. The sauce was solid and it had a nice little kick to it. The pepperoni had some nice burnt marks on it to giving it some extra crunch. This was a well put together pizza!
Atmosphere: It is a small spot but it was a nice vibe inside. From my table, I was able to watch pizzas being made and that was entertaining. Watching the cook suppress that air bubbles that were forming on each pizza was cool to see.
Workers: Nice and pleasant. My water was constantly refilled. That is all I ask for.
I don't care if this place is out of your way, make sure you go!
Food: As expected, when in Baltimore, you have to get Crab Cakes. The crab cakes were not that big and that was a disappointment at first sight. I am used to restaurants giving larger cakes, so I went into this meal thinking I would get the same. Nope. In terms of taste, It was fine though; nothing special.
The pre-meal bread was good along with the sauce that comes with it.
Atmosphere: The place is very nice inside. A few window seats give you a nice view of the Patapsco River. I would imagine this would be a nice spot to experience during the night hours.
Workers: Pleasant
As many have mentioned before, I have walked past this place so many times and never bothered setting foot inside.
Food: I decided to get the Ropa Vieja. This dish was so damn good. Shredded brisket was seasoned well. The tomatoes, peppers, and onions gave it a nice touch. It comes with black beans, white rice, and fried sweet plantains.
Tostones: Nice sized tostones. Very crispy. Probably the best I have eaten in this area.
Workers: They showed solid hospitality, no complaints here.
Atmosphere: This place has A+ atmosphere. Dark lighting but you can tell they spent a LOT of money on the Cuban style decor. It is a sight to see and I am not usually into the atmosphere of a restaurant.
This place isn't overly expensive and it is easily accessible to downtown DC. I endorse 100%
Food: I decided to get the Brisket sandwich both times that I came here. My meal came with Sweet Potato fries. Both were good choices and should be given a chance by anyone that comes here.
I tasted the ribs and they are very salty, so be careful if you are part of the High Blood Pressure crew.
Baked Beans: Very good as well. Nice little kick to them
Sweet Potato Doughnuts Ball: 5 of them come in a brown paper bag with powdered brown sugar and cinnamon. Butter also comes on the side. I would suggest getting everything on the side as it was a little too sweet for MY tasting.
Workers: Constantly checking in making sure we were fine. No complaints.
Atmosphere: I have only been between the work week hours of 5-8 PM. It can get a little crowded around 6PM so if you are able to get a seat before then, do so.
In short, if you live in the area this place is worth coming to.
Food: I got the fries with the chicken philly. The chicken philly was good and the bun used was very good. The fries were basic, nothing to see there really.
Workers: They were friendly but for some reason, our fries came out WAY after our sandwiches. To the point where we stopped eating our sandwiches to wait until our fries came out. I am patient but I couldn't eat my food in a natural flow. I am sure this doesn't happen regularly so it wasn't that much of an issue. They eventually came out.
Atmosphere: On Washington, near South Beach. Don't expect anything spectacular.
These were some of the best wings I have had in a LONG time.
I read a lot of the other reviews about how Wingo's has trouble with frying their wings hard/extra crispy. Knowing this before hand, when I ordered I had to tell dude at the register this.
"Fry them EXTRA EXTRA crispy. Make sure they are burnt."
It worked. Those wings were so damn crispy it didn't make any sense.
I got the Mumbo flavor. That sauce was good and I dipped my seasoned fries into it too. That was a good meal. I wish I would have bought another Groupon now.
Those were some good wing.
Remember to tell them:
"Fry them EXTRA EXTRA crispy. Make sure they are burnt."
"Fry them EXTRA EXTRA crispy. Make sure they are burnt."
