Dheeraj has been my masseur--and friend--for four years now. He is a remarkable masseur and a wonderful human being. His massage truly is like no other. His oils from India are different from standard massage oils. They clear the sinuses and stimulate the skin. He was obviously well trained in his massage school, but his techniques are unique--truly "Dheerajian." He somehow uses hands and knees simultaneously so your muscles are stretched in several directions at once. His studio is clean and comforting, and if you're lucky, his cat Naina will let you pet her. But it's always HER decision. Obviously if we have a four year massage/friend relationship, Dheeraj is doing something--everything--right.
I took Crystal up on her invitation and came back to Troquet a day or two ago, hoping the clove vodka cocktail would still be available. It was, and that made me very happy (even happier after I drank the potent little cuss!)
Everything else was quite good too: a nice serving of knockwurst and a mug of hard cider. As a Nutella fan, I especially enjoyed the Nutella mousse for dessert, rich enough to be wicked but a small enough portion to avoid downright sinfulness.
The service remains excellent. I like this place.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your cocktail! You'll have to join us again for another one...or two!
Frankly, I ate here on a Saturday night because it was open, there were tables, and I was hungry and frazzled (long story--don't ask). I'm glad I chose to dine here. The steak frites was a good entree--simple but tasty and the side salad was dressed with a very nice light vinegrette with crunchy little seeds. Good basic stuff, well done. The cinnemon rice pudding was also good--a just-right portion after a fairly substantial entree. My favorite part of the experience though was the special cocktail, Vodka 8. The primary flavor was clove--yeah, clove!--combined with maple syrup, lemon juice, and sparkling wine. It is a perfect fall drink--a little bit of heat but also refreshing and light. Kind of like clove flavored soda pop with a kick. I loved it. My compliments to the innovative bartender who came up with that one!
Not normally fond of sports bars and such but this place is a welcome exception. The bar area has a slight country club ladies who lunch vibe, but food more than compensates. The booth was too dark to read (a real problem for book loving single travelers). Fortunately the in-boothTV had been removed from my table and I could ignore all the other TVs in the room. (Good God, America! How many sports channels do we need?)
The sangria was good and potent--gave me a slight buzz. Since it was a chilly early-fall night, I ordered the braised short ribs with root vegetables. They were delicious. Service was attentive and personable. A good meal for my night in Normal.
I didn't experience any of the problems that others have experienced here. This is a slightly older hotel, and since it's in a college town, I suspect it gets rough treatment on football weekends. Nonetheless the hotel is clean and comfortable. There were no problems with my room. The lobby is a little dark and dreary, at least on an overcast early fall morning. The free breakfast was suitable, but if you want more, there are a couple of places within walking distance. There was almost no one here on a Thursday night, so the place was almost morbidly quiet. The pool is small, more for kids than swimmers. I scoped out other local hotels and found them to be -- ahem -- abnormally pricey for this area ($150 for a weeknight room in Normal? You're kidding. I can get cheaper rooms in the Loop.). If all you want is a Normal place to sleep and shower, stay here and pocket the sixty bucks you'll save.
Initially, when I arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday night, the staff seemed a little unready for service. As the evening progressed, though, everything picked up significantly. My waitress was as charming as can be, and everyone in the place--other waiters, busboys, the owner--took turns helping me in every way, from providing a dash of red pepper on my pasta to pulling out the table so I could get out of a tight space with dignity. I opted for a few very simple, traditional dishes and they were all excellent. The burrata and tomato appetizer was a variation on caprese salad with some nice touches on a potentially bland dish--pesto on the cheese and a little touch of roasted red peppers in the middle. It was a good choice for a muggy night. The pasta with tomato sauce was simple but well done, and I appreciated the fact that Gianni's offers half portions. The panna cotta was good but with the caramel sauce, it was a little flannish. Good but a fruit sauce might be better on a dessert known for its lightness. Parking is tight here unless you're parking in the garage for a Steppenwolf performance. Good valet parking is offered for $10.
This place might as well be annexed by Steppenwolf--I think everyone there on Wednesday night (1 July) marched across the street en mass for various 7:30 performances. The restaurant is cozy; the staff is always efficient and friendly, and last night, my server Pippi was especially so. The food ranges from good to excellent. I have two specific recommendations for Trattoria G patrons: (1) go for the special appetizers: last night's special--burrata (a form of mozarella) atop fresh roasted red and yellow peppers--was surprisingly good. (2) Leave room for the panna cotta. Yowza! Panna cotta is one of the best desserts ever, and Trattoria G's is the best in Chicago. (The best panna cotta in the universe is found at Franchino's, but you have to go all the way to North Beach in San Francisco for that. It is, however, worth the trip!)
