Before getting too much into my review, let me just say that they have really good cider and amazingly good cider donuts. Having said that, I was a little surprised by how small it is. My wife and I visited Dunn's a couple of Saturdays ago with our two little kids; we wanted to make a little afternoon trip of it, and didn't want to drive too far. I knew it wasn't huge, but, well, basically it's a donut shop (okay, a cider and donut shop, but you know what I mean). That's not a negative, but I guess what I'm saying is don't expect to spend all day there.

That being said, I really enjoyed Dunn's, and will definitely be going back. In addition to being tasty, the donuts were very reasonably priced--I believe a dozen was $10, though don't quote me--as well as fresh and warm, right out of the fryer. Plus the people there were very nice, and the dining area was clean and comfortable. It may not be a place to take kids for the afternoon, but it would be a good place to hang out with a few friends. Certainly worth stopping at if you are in the Baldwin/Raymore/Peculiar/southern KCMO/southeast JoCo/maybe Grandview... okay, let's just say if you're in the general area.

New little Mexican grocery store, so new they don't even have a sign out front (hence my lack of business name). Not many shelves inside yet--the owner said they were still in the process of moving in. But what they do have is tamales--delicious, delicious homemade tamales, both Mexican and Guatemalan. (The main difference, from what I can tell, is that the Guatemalan are wrapped in banana leaves, are not as spiced, and weigh roughly the same as a toddler.) Both are delicious, though a bit different from what you might be used to--less spice, for instance, and much more of a pork flavor coming through. But definitely good. And only a couple blocks from my house, which...well, that may not be so good.

This location is a nice one--clean, very convenient, friendly staff--but I've been here several times and they've gotten something wrong on my order about a third of the time. Just this past Saturday my wife went in and picked us up a couple of beverages--a coffalattachocochino or something for her, and an iced latte for me. There was a long line, and it took awhile, so when they handed her my not-iced latte, she wasn't able to spend another 20 minutes there. Nice location, very convenient, nice staff. I just wish they were a bit more consistent.

      Updated review

Not really adding anything earth-shattering to my review, but I just had to take a moment and say just how nice the staff is here. We went in for dinner a few days ago, and the service couldn't have been better. And fast--we placed our order and I barely had time to bring our toddler over to it before they had our wraps ready, which, for made to order and grilled, is great. (Of course, toddlers are notoriously hard to herd, but still, they were quick.)

This is kind of a tough review; I guess the final score depends on what you value the most. If I was basing this review on food alone, I would have to give it a score of 8, maybe 8.5, out of a possible 5. Amazing food. If I based the review on the friendliness of the staff and owners, I would probably give it a 4 or 4.5. Basing the review on service, well...

My wife and I visited on a recent Saturday evening. We had gotten there about 5:30 for an early dinner (had a few places to go and a babysitter at home with our two kids). Walking in, the ambiance is properly pub-like: great bar, dark wood, comfortably Old World-ish. There were only about a half-dozen other patrons at that time, and the bartender told us to sit where we would like. We picked a table a bit away from the bar--the whole place isn't that big, so "a bit away" means maybe 10 feet. A few minutes later the bartender came over, dropped off some menus, and took our beer orders. For only six other patrons in the bar at that time it seemed to take longer than I'd expect to bring us our beers, but, hey, we ordered draft and not bottles so whatever.

When he brought our beers, along with waters, my wife and I ordered starters--I ordered a Scotch egg. Everything is hand-made, so it takes longer--know that up front. If you're stopping by for a quick bite, eh, maybe not. Maybe 15 minutes later the bartender came by to ask if we wanted to put in our dinner orders now, before the starters. We allowed that, yeah, that'd probably be best. My wife ordered the fish and chips, and I ordered the fisherman's pie. A few minutes after that one of the owners brought our starters out--curried fries for my wife, and a sausage roll for me. "Um," I asked the bartender when I managed to flag him down a few minutes later, "I ordered the Scotch egg..." "Oh, my bad," he said, "I entered it wrong." However, I didn't have another 20 minutes to wait, so I said it was fine and ate the sausage roll. Which was good. Not complaining about the sausage roll.

Ten minutes later, the owner again brought out our entrees. The fisherman's pie was amazing--a thick creamy sauce, good mussels, shrimp, cod, and salmon, with a puff pastry square on top. My wife's fish and chips were, she said, the best she's had since moving to KC. She told the owner that a few minutes later when he dropped by, and he not unjustly said that they should be, seeing as how he, the other owner, and the chef are all from Ireland and know good fish and chips. The bite I had was very good, but I was in love with my fisherman's pie. ("If you love it so much, why didn't you marry it?" you may be asking, but I was sitting across from my wife so I couldn't propose to the pie without it getting a bit awkward.)

After we finished, our bartender/waiter came over, got our plates, and asked if we wanted dessert--a chocolate Guinness concoction, with candied walnuts and candied bacon. "Hmm," we said, "well, kind of full, but, oh, sure, we'll split one." He left, and 10 minutes later he came back to drop off our check. About five minutes later he came back to get the check and credit card, and I asked him about the dessert. "Oh, you debated about it, and I thought you decided not to," he said. We said that, well, never mind, we were really full at that point (which was true--the pie took a minute to really settle, but once it did, I didn't want another bite. Good food, but, man, it was rich.) "Yeah," he said, "it was kind of ambiguous." Um, okay...

Mind you, the bartender/waiter was very personable and nice, and the owner we met was great--again, on friendliness alone, I would rate it very high. The food was fantastic, the beer top notch, the ambiance great--we are definitely going back. Just, you know, as a suggestion to the owners, maybe if you got a dedicated server, or at least had the bartender write things down...
