Cash only, but they sold 1 liter real Munich Oktoberfest beers. A liter of Spaten Oktoberfest cost $18. I guess thats acceptable. But i know a liter in Munich can be had for less than $10, but then again, in Germany, beer can be cheaper than soda. Nothing to write home about regarding the service as we just got beers and chilled out outside. Great place to have a drink on a quiet warm night while having a relaxing conversation with a friend. I didnt have the food, but the food looked ok. While the food is german, not everything is beer food. I wish there were more traditional biergarten foods available as pubgrub.
Zum Schneider is a very good place for German beer. After I studied abroad in Germany, I was very disappointed with beer after I came back to the United States. Fortunately, since then beer has improved a great deal. Nevertheless, it's hard to find good German beer on tap here because it just sits, and it gets stale. Not here. The beer is very fresh. I really liked the Smoked Beer that was on special. When the weather is nice, they have outside seating. It's also a special thing that they actually have real German people working there. I imagine they are younger German people who live in New York and get a job there. It makes it feel more authentic. The first time I went, the bartender was friendlier. This time the other guy did his job but was quiet. This review is for the beer only because I didn't eat. I looked at the Yelp pictures and didn't seem so impressed with the food. The entrees were also relatively expensive, so I chose to grab something somewhere else.
FAVORITE German bar/restaurant in NYC! I lived in Germany (cologne) before moving to NYC 3 years ago, and some of my friends recommended this place. I've been here several times, and it's a lot of fun! They celebrate all German traditions (like Christmas with special German Christmas songs and events, carnival, midsummer, German sports events etc.).. The environment and decor is super German, and I love coming here! They serve all kinds of German food - and it's good!! Their spätzle, the schnitzel, the krautsalad. I could continue.. Everything is good!!
So it's cash only and I missed the small notification only on page 3 of their menu because I ordered from the brunch menu. Maybe it was posted on the door in invisible ink somewhere, but I missed it. They have an ATM with a $2.50 charge inside. TG I had a friend with her ATM card because I didn't have mine. What's the policy then? I only had $20 and a credit card. What happens? I didn't like that the manager said that people have come for years and, "They just know," that it's cash only because this was my first visit. As a manager, I also did not like that he was sacrificing his very hardworking server's tip for his own attitude issues and even told her that she wouldn't be getting a tip. What should happen is if a situation like this occurs from the business standpoint, he should pay her a tip from his own pocket. She was lovely. She was fast. The food was good. She was busy and cordial. I'm disgusted by the management that day, quite honestly. And since I had no control over how to pay my part and was able to depend on my friend to save my dignity, I couldn't control her opinion of how she felt tipping was appropriate. It is what it is. I had a good time and enjoyed my food. I would return if management is different for next time for someone who appreciates his or her hardworking staff. It's important to recognize those who work hard.
Upon entering Zum Schneider you are immediately transported from NY to Germany. The rustic decor, the staff and the beer are all real deal and doesn't get more authentic without getting on a plane. I've been here numerous times over the course of 10 years and can't find any flaws except that there is only one small ladies room. Every dish I've ever ordered has been perfect. The only thing that they could improve on would be the pretzel... it's not made with any love... but alas this will not stop me from returning.
I came for Christmas carols as I do each year. I arrived at 1130am for doors at 1pm. I invited friends who also came on time and patiently waited in line. A large woman pushed her way into our group, I asked her to not push us since we have been here standing and signing in this group. She says is push her and threaten to punch her in the face and ask her to leave. My entire group agrees with and witnessed the incident. The manager says this woman is loud and maybe correct and I should leave, which obviously ruins my Christmas celebration and hours I invested with Zum to have fun and celebrate the holiday. Why? Accusation from someone who showed up late and wants to push her fat way in = a crime and I have to leave? What is this society? I have been a Zum supporter and advocate for 10 years but the manager asks me to leave for this woman's claim which has no proof! Why?
Food was very good; service mediocre at best. The server should have advised they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. Bill was over a $100, who carries cash anymore? luckily I do but that's not the point!
Good beer selection - very reasonably priced. Food selection is big but served in small portions. Music plays at night and has an upbeat vibe.
Perfect spot to get some German food and delicious beer. I absolutely recommend the schnitzel with a side of spaetzle. Definitely give the sausages a try too. They only do a special pork shank one night of the week so definitely inquire as to what day that is.
Omg this place is so overrated, the food is good but is not worth it at all to go there during the time of the Christmas songs. They have no system in place at all for ppl to get tables. It is first come first serve which can end up in a person standing up for 5 hours and another who just gets in getting a table. Never again. Not worth it
Great authentic German food, and super reasonably priced. Came here with my mom and brother and we shared two plates, which was more than enough food. The sausage platter is a great value and their pretzels are some of the best I've ever had in my life. Cool biergarden atmosphere, and the service was great!
This place is great! They're beer is the best in east village and for a decent price. It's authentic german. Not only the beer, but the food is good too. They have a small selection but it's hard core german. I love the pretzels and bratwurst is amazing. I highly recommend you go here for some early drinks. The beer is crisp and flavorful. You'd need 50 in your system for a hangover. They also have outdoor seating...
It is a German bar located in East Village, NYC. I love the beer. I tried wheat Weisse and a classic Bavarian Lager. They are great. I love the German Style Potatos. The only problems that may stop me to come frequently are that it is far away from the subway station and you must pay in cash.
Excellent German restaurant and today there was a Christmas feast with roasted goose, potato dumpling and a 5+ selection of salads tastings (radish, cucumber, regular salad, coleslaw, potato salad). The dessert was a vanilla putting with stewed fruits (raspberry, blueberry, strawberry). I've never been here before.
Is it possible to rate them at a half star? We waited over an hour after they accidentally double-booked parties on Karneval night.. there was a long line of frustrated customers... then the bouncer- a bald middle aged white dude who must have been a professional screamer- shoved and slammed the door on severalw people in line. Unbelievable and completely the opposite to the spirit of Karneval. Both awful planning (a total embarrassment to Germans) and unashamedly rude and unaccountable behavior afterward... this place truly sucks. I'll never come again- I'm pretty sure most of the people in line won't either. How disappointing.r
The beer selection is outstanding. The food is very good. The service is attentive. The room gets very crowded and they do not accept credit cards. Also, it is challenging to get to their LES location from midtown. All things considered, yes - I will return.
Terrible experience. Bar itself was cute but we had the most terrible waiter (slender black man with dyed blonde hair) - he made multiple inappropriate comments, was extremely slow on serving when all we ended up ordering (due to his behavior) was a bottle of wine. At first I thought he was just being sassy, which I'm into - but nah. I've been to a lot of bars and this was probably one of the worst. Won't go again, ton of places in the area that won't make you feel uncomfortable.
I will admit that I'm not a big fan of German food but this place gets an A for effort. Almost everything has meat/sausages so if you're vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free etc, you're in the wrong place. Loved the interior/rustic atmosphere and thought the crowd was lively. Lots of banging on tables and beer drinking all around. Did I think the sausages were the best Ive tasted? No. Would I come here again? Probably not. But if you like meat/potatoes/beer etc, it's worth a visit at least for the experience.
Smallish German restaurant with some outdoor seating, not really a beer-hall-type place like Radegast or what you'd find in Munich. That said, I appreciated the somewhat limited selection of quality German beer--enjoyed myself without getting overwhelmed by the choices. Wouldn't go out of my way to return, but I'd certainly stop by if I happen to be in the area again when the weather's nice.
Nothing like a good beer after a softball game. What ever I had that was new and I couldn't pronounce was delish! Missed that fifth star for not a very big $4 pretzel, but.... Love Zum Schneider. Yah!
