Q:
I'm flying in to check out classes at Seattle Uni and this seems to be the only gym between my sister's place on 3rd and school. Is it possible to check out and try the facilities while on my trip? Is this a place a graduate student can afford?
A:
ZUM offers a day pass. Great gym. Good equipment. Excellent classes & outstanding trainers.

Probably the best gym I have ever belonged to. Joe DeShaw, owner, is fantastic. He teaches two classes; noon on Monday and 8:00 AM on Friday. Several other trainers for people who are looking to hire a personal trainer. If you started coming back to the office, I'd highly recommend Zum.

I've been a member of Zum for 4 few years. I absolutely love it.
The classes are top notch. I'd recommend anything by Liz (her 11:10am Mon, Wed, is my favorite) or Derek or Ta Wei. You will have fun and you will sweat! And get a massage by Tony (who also teaches some great morning classes), he's helped me a lot after long runs. The staff gets to know you and they're always friendly and totally professional.
The gym itself is clean and the equipment is well taken care of. I also really enjoy the friends I've made over the years. All of this makes my workouts the best.
Work is stressful, to be able to take a break in the middle of the day to workout with people I enjoy, at a gym I love, is everything. Thanks Zum!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Tiffany! Thanks for being a great part of our community and for your review!

I've been a member of Zum for over a year and continue to enjoy every aspect of the gym.
The staff is so friendly and welcoming. They know me by name and all of the instructors/trainers are engaged and encouraging.
I really enjoy both the quality and variety of classes that Zum offers. Shout out to Liz who is my absolute favorite instructor. Her mini blast classes are fast-paced and challenging - a great way to get an intense and quick work out in during the workday.
The equipment and locker rooms are always very well maintained and the gym never feels overcrowded.
I've also enjoyed the community of members that I've met at Zum. Familiar faces and new friends help make working out more enjoyable.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 17, 2016
Wish I found this gym back when I moved into my apartment. As a college student living off campus it was difficult to find a gym that I liked going to. When I found this gym, it was not at all what I expected. The trainers are all friendly, the people that attend are friendly and will help if you look lost, and they keep all the facilities nice and clean.
My trainer was Nina and i highly recommend her. She listened to what I wanted and helped me find a routine that was to my level. When I got bit by a dog, she helped give me advice as to what to do in terms of exercises to help me heal my knee.
What I really loved about this gym was the classes! I never got to do all the classes I wanted to try, but the ones I really loved were: weigh crazy, survivor, push pull power, nxt level, mini blast, hardcore, and boxfit (now K.O). These classes were offered throughout the day from like 6:30 until 7pm which was great because it fit my schedule whenever I wanted to work out. I just really loved this gym that I actually went to the gym everyday (did I say EVERYDAY?) i meant everyday!
Seriously this gym is amazing and I suggest you try it out when you can.
The only thing I dislike about this was when I signed up, I explained to meghan that I was a student and I would be leaving seattle by the end of march and she explained that she would make sure I wouldn't get charged for the next month and that she would put a note to cancel my membership by that day we agreed on. When I went to make sure my membership was cancelled I found out that I had to get charged for the next month which sucked, but oh well.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Peter Christian P.Los Angeles, CA889116Jan 19, 2018
I have been going to ZUM Fitness since last July and I truly love it. No, it isn't "cheap", but everything you get in return is well worth the price and very difficult to find within Seattle gyms.
PROS
1. It's consistently spotless.
2. I almost never have to wait to use a machine, and it's rarely crowded (except 5pm-6:30pm when it's busiest).
3. The classes are truly superb and the instructors are extremely knowledgeable and attentive when teaching. Form is very important and they make sure everybody is managing their workouts.
4. I love the strong sense of community with my fellow members and that the staff knows you by name - everybody is super kind and helpful.
5. The electronic lockers/sauna/AVEDA grooming products etc. are lifesavers for those of us who don't want to have to schlep a lot of stuff around for our commutes.
My only "complaints" or really, wishes, is that they'd improve the following:
1. Please incorporate a pec deck machine or something of that kind. The gym is lacking in pec/chest machines.
2. Add rubber coating to the pull up bars--they are really tough to use as is and not very comfortable.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Julia G.Wellesley, MA47221Dec 16, 2018Updated review
So my initial review of the place was four stars (nice gym but oh so expensive...that's Westlake for you). However, if you are a UW employee, you are eligible for a discount! I only heard about this later from a fellow colleague.
First and foremost, the staff are so wonderful and friendly. I've been at the gym for a little over several months and they seem to genuinely enjoy connecting with their gym members and working at Zum - whether it's to recommend outdoor bike safety gear, help you on your squat form, or recommend a Physical Therapist. And it's not in a creepy or pushy way, you can be chatty when you want or just plug in your headphones and do your own thing.
The equipment is really well maintained and clean. Since I'm recovering from a sprained ankle, there are numerous machines that let me get in cardio without injuring myself further. The gym always has fresh towels, and I appreciate the extras they have in the women's locker room (spray on deodorant, make-up wipes, blow dryers/hair straighteners, etc). I get a really nice and relaxing feeling overall from the locker room.
Most classes are included, and they're pretty diverse. I get bored sticking to one class so I love the variety: cycling, cardio circuit sets, yoga, there's even a Bollywood style dance class that I have yet to try.
Anyway, all this to say that I highly recommend!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Julia,
Thank you so much for changing to this five-star review! I'm very happy you are benefitting. Enjoy your holidays and we'll see you soon!

Hello Julia, thank you very much for joining our community and for your review. I'm Joe, the General Manager, and I'd be happy to meet and listen to what would make ZŪM more valuable for you.
Regarding our membership pricing, our most expensive non-crossfit membership is $150, which is what we charge for a month-to-month commitment. There are more affordable options if you are interested in a six or twelve month commitment.
Thanks again for your review and I hope to hear from you soon.Sep 18, 2018Previous reviewI like this gym! But four stars because it is so. Damn. Expensive! (Over 180 dollars a month, not including the crossfit classes.) I'm currently a member and love the clean space, the classes (instructors are great!), the comfortable locker room. I tried one Crossfit class and everyone was so supportive and great. But I don't really feel like I'm getting my money's worth because most days I just come in for an hour to get on the elliptical/do my PT exercises. I checked out LA fitness and saw that it was under 50 dollars a month (including a pool). So unfortunately after being a member for about a month I'm already thinking of switching. If you can afford to pay almost 200 a month and need a gym that's in the Westlake area, I would say 100% go for it!

This place (@ZumFitness) is a joke.
I lived in LA for almost 5 years (Beverly Hills for 1), I get the interest in clean, aesthetically pleasing boutique style gyms, man, but these guys are doing it all wrong.
Firstly, this is Seattle. It's Amazon money and predominantly older money that smells like moth balls (yes I'm also talking about you 37-52 year olds).
Look, most of these guys and a lot of them are my peers, don't care about the boutique gyms, they just appreciate a clean locker room. Pro Sports Club is great for that. But I would hope that in the future at Zum, a.) they don't get rid of their sauna nor the Aveda men's hair liquid pomade, b) they change the front desk receptionist (the new blonde guy, can't remember his name, was snoody), and c) fire the older guy who's balding that's been at the front desk for like 20 years, he's a shmuck and was super passive aggressive when I was there trying it out. I'll stick close to the Washington Athletic Club and their traditional Protestant values regarding superior customer service that I'm more responsive to. As well as the urban boxing gyms and the other gym with a sauna and towel service down the street. Peace out!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Stephanie D.Kapaa, HI3385342Jun 1, 2017
You get what you pay for! This is the best investment I've ever made in my life. I've been a member for over a year and I love everything about Zum, from the staff to the trainers, to the amazing products in the locker rooms. We are talking about Aveda shampoo, conditioners, and styling products. Not only there are hair dryers but also curling irons and straighteners.
I am so impressed by the fitness instructors and the classes they take time to create each and everyday. Not a single class will be exactly the same. You will not only become fitter and stronger but increase your range of motion and stamina. Zum will take your health and fitness to a new level you've never experienced before. Make sure you go try a week for free and take advantage of all of their classes!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rachel L.Seattle, WA6113745Oct 15, 2019
I tried the free week trial with ZUM Fitness. Their customer service was beyond expectations. Despite its prime location in the middle of downtown, the gym was pretty empty when I went in. I took yoga and ZUM sport and loved both of the classes. Once again, I appreciated the extra guidance since the class sizes were small. The washroom has a shower, sauna, lockers, towels and amenities - nothing to really complain there. I'm unfortunately not signing up since it's a bit on the expensive side; however, I appreciated the warm welcome by the staff and trainers.

Zum is one of the best gyms around! Everyone there is very friendly and helpful, not afraid of providing quick feedback on form/technique if you're open to receiving it.
The space contains your standard set up for weights, plus a variety of other equipment including TRX, heavy bags, balance beams, and even a palates area.
They offer a wide variety of classes to their members, all of which have loyal followers. If you're into or interested in, Crossfit, they have an Ox Box Crossfit gym on the first floor.
The gym is more expensive than a 24 Hour or Gold's Gym, but it's worth the price.
I highly recommend ZUM Fitness to anyone looking for a fantastic gym with a great community.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
