My boyfriend and I came here a few weeks ago for our anniversary dinner, and it was so good! The atmosphere was perfect for the occasion because it was dim and pretty quiet. We made a reservation for 8, but we got there early and were still able to be seated. At that time, most of the other customers seemed to be Japanese businessmen drinking with colleagues after work. I got the cold eggplant and beef and mushroom tobanyaki while the boyfriend got soba and jidori chicken.
The cold eggplant was just okay. It was in a cold broth, and it was refreshing, but it wasn't really what I was expecting. The beef and mushroom tobanyaki was so good! It was unfortunate that there wasn't as many pieces of meat as I had hoped. It was still slightly rare in the middle, and the juices of the meat just flowed out into my mouth when I bit into it. The beef was tender and flavorful. There also was a bed of bean sprouts, onions, and mushrooms underneath it, and the juices of the beef could also be tasted in them. The jidori chicken was AMAZING! The chicken was grilled with the skin on, and the skin was nice and crunchy, contrasting the juicy chicken underneath. A teriyaki sauce was drizzled over it and it was a tad sweet, but it wasn't overpowering. The soba was also really good! At first, we were wondering why all the dishes had come except for the soba, which is the simplest dish of all since it was cold soba with dipping sauce. Upon biting into the noodles, we knew. It was freshly made right before it was served. You can definitely taste the quality and hand craft of the chef.
Last but not least, the dessert!!! I saw that a lot of people were raving about the black sesame ice cream, and I will be joining that squad! The black sesame ice cream is heavenly...It isn't too sweet, but the texture and taste is perfect. A black sesame concentrate sauce was drizzled over the ice cream, and it was so good. You could just tell by the consistency and taste that it was made with real black sesame seeds.
I definitely recommend coming here, especially for the jidori chicken and black sesame ice cream!!! Dinner was pretty expensive, especially for the portions, but I heard that lunch is a pretty good deal, so I'll definitely be back for lunch next time!!! - Gary I.Los Angeles, CA
5/25/2016Yuzu is the most versatile Japanese citrus resembling a cross between lime & lemon w/ the wrinkled skin of some kinds of tangerine. The juice can be used just as it is to add an aromatic citrus gastrique to any dish or can be used as part of the ingredients to make the sour Umami filled Ponzu sauce.
The zest can be used to make Yuzu Kosho-, a spicy, piquant paste that awakens many mild, white colored seafood as well as roast duck.
However, in this case, Yuzu is an Izakaya which means it specializes in small plates to be ideally eaten w/ Sake (sah keh), Sho-chu- (show chew), a form of lower alcohol Japanese Vodka, & Japanese beer.
Yuzu is in a mixed use shopping mall w/ stores on the first floor & condominiums above. This would be an ideal situation for many in the under 35 set who don't want the drudgery of cooking & so can walk down a flight of stairs to land into a restaurant. This is analogous to living at the Gaylord Apts. on Wilshire Blvd. & going down an elevator to find din-din at HMS Bounty.
The interior of Yuzu is subdued, contemporary Japanese minimalism using plenty of wood tones, textured black & white walls w/ a bit of color. There is bar seating for those who are single or double dinners & tables for larger groups. BTW, it is not a Sushi bar.
1) Crab Salad is too large for one person unless you are part rabbit. Mixed salad greens, florets of barely parboiled crunchy, bright green broccoli, grape tomatoes, yellow & orange colored sweet bell pepper, chunks of flakey red-orange tinged white crab meat.
We opted for the white sesame paste based salad dressing which was mild, not too salty nor vinegary. just enough sweet, toasted sesame flavor to let the fresh vegetables shine through. We used the greens throughout the meal to act as a refreshing palate cleanser.
2) California roll was standard w/ the rice side in. Yuzu does use real crab instead of Surimi or imitation crab made from white meat fish infused w/ crab flavor.
3) Kuro Buta/black pig Kara'age is cut into strips flash fried w/ no batter, then sautéed in Japanese black rice vinegar, Sho-yu/Japanese soy sauce, sugar & thickened w/ a bit of corn starch garnished w/ a chiffonade of Negi/Japanese long onions. It's similar to the Chinese sweet & sour which instead uses a tomato ketchup base.
4) Aigamo: mixed duck breed that crosses wild w/ domesticated that is grilled w/ a chiffonade of Negi on top. I ordered the duck medium rare since if it cooked more sometimes becomes hard & dry.
The skin is seared brown. The meat is a bit gamey & there is a touch of blood to add a hemato-minerality. Nice succulent meat that has a good meaty chaw for some paleo based goodness. (Order this at the beginning since it takes time to prepare.)
5) All the above was downed w/ Kawaba White Weizen/German for wheat. Has a good refreshing, medium body, not too hoppy that would make it have more green herbal bitterness.
It's brisk, yet mellow, not overpowering like an IPA. Kawaba White is not so much an addition of flavor, but more like a way of refreshing the mouth to stimulate ingesting another round of new food.
There were only two servers, but the service is efficient, but there is very little time for them to dally around & make small talk. However, they were generally aware of our needs & were prompt in bringing requested items. 4- Yelp stars.

Its TS2 (Two Star 2yuzuesday), and its only befitting we came on Tue, 12/15/15!!!
For my 2nd TS2 of the year, I dropped by here for dinner w/ a b'ness associate between bar hopping in DT Torrance. I had been to Yuzu before for drinks, and I was eager to try their food. Too bad the food wasn't worth the wait. Yuzu is in the small mall located on Cabrillo right off Torrance Blvd, right across from previously reviewed Buffalo Fire Department.
We ordered Maui onion (I forget the price), aigamo ($10.80 | cross bred wild and domestic duck w/ negi onion), kurobuta karaage ($10.50 | kurobuta pork glazed w/ sweet & sour black vinegar and negi onion, and washuu beef menchikatsu ($12.50 | minced beef w/ onion & deep fried), and miso soup (forgot to take pic). To drink, we had beer & sake.
First of all, the duck came out first after a loooong wait. This dish was nothing special and the portion was tiny for the price: 2 Stars. Secondarily, the beef didn't taste like high-end beef, and it too was nothing special. Think salisbury steak w/ panko: 2 Stars. Thirdly, the maui onion finally arrived and it came w/ avocado. This dish also didn't do anything for me: 2 Stars. Lastly, the pork was overhyped and underwhelming. I really couldn't tell it was high-end kurobuta pork: 2 Stars.
Regarding the ambiance, its very nice inside. There is a bar to your far left, a sushi bar in the center, and tables on both sides: 4 Stars. On the other hand, the service was inattentive from the wait staff, and SAF - slow as fuk from the kitchen. We had to constantly hound the wait staff for everything. Additionally there was poor spacing between dishes: Both 1 Star.
Yuzu pales in comparison to previously reviewed Torihei, Mushu and the best: Izakaya Hachi. They should rename the place "Yufu" cos "yu" would be a fukn "fu" to come here. The service is SAF, the food is bad, and there is NFW I would return!!! - Akiko I.Orange County, CA

Fried chicken cartridge: deep fried. It was a bit greasy and under seasoned. The texture of cartridge and its quality were great. I wanted to see awesomeness from this dish more.. Lemon wasn't enough. Alright as a whole.
Crab salad: surprisingly good. All of the dressings (spicy mayo, creamy sesame and ponzu) were all tasty. Big portion on both salad and crab. Green mix, red bell peppers, carrot, broccoli. Good.
Fried eggplant and yamakake: great sophisticated dish. Deep fried eggplant and grated "yamaimo" (root vegetable that gets slimy when grated) Great.
Beef steak: it was tender, good seasoning w/ black pepper cone and yuzu pepper. Good yet I prefer their duck and beef tongue to this..
Onion fries: This place makes awesome tempra. I'm not a tempra fan in general, but this place wows me on tempra. Crispy outside and moist inside. Very good. They also come with avocado tempra, which is very interesting. Good dish.

This place never disappoint me - except for the run out items I wanted to try.
Many items I wanted to try (tsukune, duck again, some beef dish) weren't there and/or sold out (8pm on Tuesday). You need to go there earlier so that those won't be run out.
I can easily say this place is one of the best Japanese restaurant in CA. Very sophisticated, refined cooking skills, solid flavors, true gem. I love this place.
I'm not into hot pots, but wanna try more appetizers here!

It's on Cabrillo Ave and Torrance Blvd in Torrance.
It's in a creamy yellow building shopping plaza. You can park at the building for free - the entrance is right by "Yuzu". It's across from a sports bar. Outside seating is big. Inside is very modern, simple and moody. Dim lighting and nice atmosphere - LA hipsters will love this stuff. It'd be impossible to get in if it were in Westside like Santa Monica. 98% of the clientele were Japanese - no wonder (good sign). Packed, so make a reservation. Service was OK. Friendly yet a bit slow. The servers were all Japanese.
The category on Yelp is "sushi" but it isn't! They have cut rolls and sashimi, but no sushi. They have a sushi-bar-like "bar seating", but not a "sushi bar". You can see the action if you sit there. Their speciality is "GRILL" and it's more like "izakaya"! But their deep fried foods and desserts are good, too!
Menu: VERY Japanese. Appetizers (from vegetables to fish), yakitori, deep fried food, some noodles and ice cream. "Izakaya" - cantina offering tapas. They have good amount of drinks - sake to beer.
- Gluttony Expedition -
*** Drinks ***
Cold green iced tea: they use "matcha" for this, I believe. So it's a bit sweeter than usual "green tea", but had a stronger flavor. $3.
Draft beer: "Asahi" is usually dry but not this tap. Very mild and tasty.
*** Appetizers ***
Zaru Tofu: fresh tofu ("zaru tofu" is the top part of tofu - the tastiest part - in general) with a full of flavor. You don't need soy sauce. Try it by itself first! The green onions (seasoned with salt) give great accent! Good!
Imo ten: Pumpkin and sweet potato tempra are cut so thick and cooked so perfectly! Great. They got a curry salt and green tea salt - yum!
*** Grill ***
Beef tongue: Simply grilled - in very profound way. It's so tender and juicy. Very thick cut. Great.
Tebasaki (chicken wing): Cooked well and juicy. I prefer a little more salt and peppers, but well cooked.
jidori chicken with ume (plum): The plum sauce and shiso (Japanese herb) are very refreshing! Chicken (good quality) could be better in taste, but the sauce was great.
yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball): $3 for the small size was disappointing. It comes with 2. Meh.
Duck (aigamo): the best dish for the night. Cooked so well - tender and juicy. Green onions (white part - shiraga negi) and wasabi for garnish. Awesome!
Ebi shinjyo: Shrimp paste is stuffed in the bread (for toast) and deep fried. The bread creates great crunchy texture on outside, the paste does the soft texture inside. The seasoning could be bolder, but the texture was sensational!
*** Desserts ***
Yuzu sorbet: Great! It's a bit too sweet, but they put lots of "Yuzu" (Japanese lime) including the zest in it. I prefer this to sesame ice cream! You must try!
Sesame ice cream: Good but I had a better one..

What a gem! This is soooo good!
You can feel the "true" essence of Japanese cuisine. "True" Japanese cuisine embraces the taste of (the main) ingredient itself - chefs cook and season the food to the minimal to ENHANCE the flavor of ingredient. Quality ingredients, great cooking skills, and a little yet creative /unique seasonings - that's all you need.
His refined cooking skills and creative approach to food and flavors really shine on the foods. "Yakitori" version of "Jiro" (documentary movie of sushi chef in Japan)? "Grilling" is simple yet shows the skill clearly. He cooks food PERFECTLY and enhances the flavors to the best. Once you eat his food, you'll get it. Kudos for that. If he cooked a steak, he'll shut down the "Mastro's" empire no time. "Mastro's" steak is a joke to me, but you know what I mean? His cooking skills and his foods are Impressive.
If you thought this place were boring, it only means you don't know "true" Japanese cuisine nor good food. Japanese cooking could be subtle. But we prefer to enjoy the true flavors of ingredients. We care about the season of the ingredients, too. Foods remind us (Japanese) of the season - spring, summer, fall and winter. The grilling skill itself is "top notch". You can't even detect the skills - I highly recommend you to go to "in N out". I'm sure you'll love it as much as "McDonald's". Those of you (who think this place is boring) shouldn't need to come here nor Yelp about this place.
If you wanted to understand "true" Japanese food, come here. This is great!
I like this hidden gem. I can't wait to try other items!Read more

Anytime we go out for lunch, I always forget about Yuzu as an option because it's like one of those hidden restaurants that you forget about, but when you remember, it reminds you how good Yuzu is. I have come here a few times for lunch. I usually get a lunch set. I have tried the pork belly and beef/mushroom set. They were both really good and tasty. The meats were cooked just perfectly. This last time I went, someone suggests the beef tongue and stated that it tastes really good here. So, I decided to try it and I am really glad that I did.
The beef tongue was cooked just right, it was tender, juicy, and flavorful. It was probably one of the best beef tongue that I ever had. I ordered the lunch set, so it came with other side items, some which I did not like as much. It came with a mushroom side dish (which was pretty good), soup (I am not sure what flavor this was, but I thought it was watery), carrots (this tastes like wood. LOL), rice (good), tofu (this was pretty good and came with a sauce on top), and some sort of sticky thing (I think it was a sticky looking rice?? but, I did not really like the taste). They also provide you a salad as a starter. I will definitely order the beef tongue again. It's a little on the pricey side for lunch. My beef tongue was a little over $20.
The ambience of the restaurant is very nice. Small, clean, and modern. They have both an indoor and outdoor seating area. If you are a bigger group, I would suggest making a reservation because they tend to get really busy. - Candice L.Diamond Bar, CA
3/14/2016This place is pretty hard to look for at night since the sign is pretty much dark.
I was lucky to go to this place with my Church people who loves to try food.
We came with around 20 people and we pretty much tried everything; left at 12.30 AM!
I've tried so many dishes, I couldn't even remember them all, but the ones that stood out for me:
Zaru tofu- really good as a starter!
Beef tongue- the thickest, juiciest, and best beef tongue I've ever had!
Tsukune- Taking skewer to another level!
Kurobuta pork
Maui onion
Washuu beef
Duck
Beef steak w pepper
Grilled chicken
Rock Shrimp tempura roll
Spider roll
Chicken cartridge
Ebi Shinjo
Masaba Shioyaki
Yuzukiri Soba
The dessert: We got Black Sesame, Yuzu, and Lychee Ice Cream
The lychee is amazing!! The Sesame is creamy, and the Yuzu is refreshing!
My review doesn't do enough justice for this place.

Came here with my fiancé for a adventure dinner. I am glad i found this gem. Classy decor playing modern basa nova music. Izakaya food with class.
A quite place for a nice dinner. Food is great
Ordered the plum wine and house sake. Superb!!
A carte
Yuzu salad interesting fusion salad with seaweed and balanced marinated baby Harloom carrots.
Beef tongue with yuzu daikon dressing. They serve the tongue thick and partially slices mmmm who doesn't like a thick tongue to swallow...
Minced wahuu kobe beef croquette better than the one we had in Kobe Japan...
Sabu duck with herbs. Suck very tender and succulent.
Fried taro and eggplant with ponzu. I just love taro dishes
Sashimi du jour. by itself didn't taste special but add the other things that come with it is great- shisho leaf, soy sauce and wasabi
Half chicken Kara age. It was a surprise because we thought it was the fried chicken pieces.
Strawberry pudding dessert and complimentary green tea!!
Service is subtle and friendly. It wasn't busy so they were attentive
Ambience is relaxing and appetizing. Sucks they didn't have any of the pork dishes, I will come back to try their pork dishes :)

4/4/2016Excellent Japanese Izakaya here that obviously uses really good ingredients. The style is pretty traditional here so don't expect anything too crazy or fusion, just simple good Japanese food. I love the decor here. It's spacious and quiet, excellent for a date night. In LA, you pay a premium for that and this place is no exception. Dishes range from $10-20 here, but I would estimate $15 per dish. At Izakaya places, we usually order in batches to make sure the food doesn't come out all at once. At Yuzu, that seems unnecessary as they seem to know to control the pace themselves, putting a max of 2 dishes on your table at any given time.
Our dishes:
Gyumotsu Konabe - beef intestine hot pot. Size is small, good for 2 people, cooked at the table. Intestine is very fresh and not fatty at all. The soup is really flavorful and clean-tasting. My husband and I actually prefer a fattier motsu nabe so we like the one at Izakaya Hachi better, but this is totally a personal preference.
Ebi Shinjo (fried shrimp cake) - excellent! Shrimp paste overlying a small square of white bread and then the whole thing is fried. I've never had anything like this before at other izakayas.
Aigamo duck - Really delicious. Duck is on the lean side but still juicy. Goes so well with the freshly grated wasabi on the side (which is super mild when freshly grated)
Atsuage (fried tofu with minced shiso leaves) - The shiso is really the main star of this dish. Goes well with a bit of soy sauce drizzled over the the tofu.
Kijiyaki ju (teriyaki jidori chicken) - Traditionally, you want to end with a rice or noodle dish at the end of the meal at an Izakaya. Very tender and juicy chicken. Well-marinated with well-balanced flavors. Not too sweet.
I had really wanted to try the beef tongue but they ran out (at least by 8:30pm). Ah well, next time! I would definitely come back here again. All of the dishes were excellent, but my favorite were the Ebi Shinjo and the Aigamo duck, followed by the motsu nabe. - Sharon L.San Diego, CA

Incredible meal for a special occasion. We told the chef to surprise us. Everything was artful, beautifully presented, and wonderful. New dishes arrived for each course. There must be a heavy duty dishwasher somewhere to accommodate the amount of dirty dishes generated!
We started with a stewed eggplant in sticky yam. Next, we received a mixed green salad with hunks of crab legs scattered throughout. A cold tofu on ice arrived. We ate grilled onigiri, pumpkin and taro tempura, a greasy and crunchy beef curry croquette, california roll (with real crab), and grilled mackerel. Grandma ordered an udon noodle soup and seemed quite happy with it. To top off the meal, we ordered scoops of ice cream. The black sesame ice cream was loaded with black sesame flavor. Yuzu resembled a lovely snow cone. Everything was so delicious. My favorites were the cold tofu on ice, the taro tempura, and the beef curry croquette. - Andrea L.Long Beach, CA1480 friends424 reviews1154 photos

I saw a write up for Yuzu in Food and Wine Magazine. Being listed in a top 10 list in LA in a national magazine is pretty impressive for a quiet little Japanese restaurant in Torrance, and since I work right around the corner, I was in!
Sushi: The Rock Shrimp tempura roll : It is a straight forward sushi roll made perfectly! Tasty, crunchy, warm, fresh and delicious! yelp.com/user_local_phot…
The Spider Roll: The presentation was beautiful and the taste was even better. Another exquisitely made roll. The chef is a real master. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Teriyaki chicken lunch special: The portion is generous and again, the presentation is just lovely. The chicken is a free-range grass-fed breast that is served grilled and marinated. Superbly cooked to order, this was the best chicken I've ever eaten in a Japanese restaurant. True story. Comes with a smoky miso soup, a tofu square which looked cool but I didn't touch, Japanese style pickled carrots and rice. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
I think Yuzu is absolutely splendid! Loved it and cant wait to go back, for dinner next time. This would be a great date spot. Good for groups and the whole family too! xo - Cesar R.Hacienda Heights, CA

Let me preface this review by saying that tofu is fu*king evil and I will always hate it.
That being said...I had a pretty great lunch here thanks to the always awesome Steph and Maggie C.
I honestly don't remember why the hell I was out in Torrance on my day off but I think it had something to do with the wife and doing her some kind of favor cuz I'm an awesome husband (or so I like to tell myself)

I had already eaten WAY too much but I had to get the black sesame ice cream based on the Steph C. seal of approval. Bear in mind I am NOT a huge fan of ice cream in general....but DAMN! this was pretty gawdamn delish....love that cool, unique nuttiness. highly recommend.

10/10/2016Relaxing environment and good food. Can't go wrong with that combo. Price is reasonable as well. It's one of those bang for your buck restaurants. I recommend the hamburger steak and their tempura. The restaurant and food placement is aesthetically pleasing. Great place for a date.

4/13/2014Best Kaki fry and softest tofu ever. not for months ending in r. Those are saved for yaki sanma. grilled to perfection with the guts left in, the most tasty part of all. I love to sit outside in the patio for lunch on weekdays.
It's nice a quiet, so you can have a conversation or watch a youtube video on your phone, there is no problem.

6/10/2013This place is amazing for lunch. The prices and portions are certainly fair. The location is very convenient for people who work/live in the South Bay. The food is dynamite.
I LOVE their pork katsu. The meat is never dry, and the breading never falls apart. The beef tongue is AMAZING, but they are almost always out of it. The tongue here is nothing like the beef tongue you see at many Kbbq places. It's not paper thin. Instead they are about an inch thick. The tongue is so tender and not overly chewy. The only downside is that you only get 4 pieces per order. Their kobe hamburg steak is always a hit. The meat can be a little salty, but it works well with rice. I also really love the fuji apple-ginger sauce.
This food here deserves 4 stars, but I've never had a complaint free meal here. It's not usually an issue with the food, but the service is sub par. Last time I was there, they ran out of rice. UHH. I'm sorry, but you're an Asian restaurant. Can't you just make more rice? Why are you running out of rice in the first place?!
Another time, I didn't get in for lunch until about 1:45. I know they close at 2, but I was still eating at around 2:15. I appreciated that they let me eat there, but they ended up turning the lights off at 2:15! How rude! They're always rushing to get people out of the restaurant before 2. I understand they close at 2, but that should not give them the right to rush their patrons. I mean, literally, they will come pick up the tip while you're sitting there, just to make a point.
I really do wish they will do something about the service, but in the meantime, I'll still go back for their amazing lunch and continue complaining about the disappointing service. - Diane H.Windsor, CA
2/5/2016I guess I'm getting tough in my old age. The food was fine but not something I could brag about. The service was very, very slow. We were patient because we weren't in a rush. Our reservation was for 7 pm and after we sat for a while, we finally got our orders in. As the food slowly got to our table, it was the last call at around 8:30 pm. We had the toughest time getting attention from the staff. They were friendly and apologetic but, man, was it slow in serving the food. I don't think I can go back. The restaurant was not full either. Very puzzling.

2/16/2011Yuzu is... love.
Yuzu is one of those places you walk into wondering if there will be anyone inside because from the outside, it looks as though it could be empty. But rest assured, it has wonderfully dim modern ambiance inside, full of Japanese people murmuring amongst themselves, enjoying the authentic Japanese fare, and throwing back some good sake.
Everything we had was fantastic. From the jidori and gobo konabe (chicken and a vegetable root similar to asparagus or what i liken to bamboo but crispier, in a mini hot pot, with hints of yuzu shavings), to the dashimaki tamago (traditional grilled egg in a light broth topped with some shavings of yuzu). The Yuburi Aigamo (duck) was also so tender... so juicy, served raw to be cooked in a mini boiling hot pot of light broth, and dipped in ponzu. The grilled onigiri, while simple, was one of the best grilled onigiri I've had in LA. Perfectly crispy on the outside, steaming hot, and flavored spectacularly. The spicy tuna was also some of the best I've had in a while. So lightly flavored yet so fresh and delicious. Most other places overdo the spicy. The NY Grilled steak was also a melt in your mouth perfect medium rare. Don't forget to order some ice cold Sapporo on tap.
Please also remember to save room for dessert - the delicious kurogama ice cream. Black sesame ice cream topped with a thick sugary black sesame paste/syrup.
Best seats in the house are the tables surrounding the center where you get to watch the chef do his magic. His knife skills are that of a samurai. And he looks Yakuza. I'll definitely be back for more, though next time not on a Monday since they get their fish fresh from Japan... and delivery starts on Tuesday. - Andy R.Torrance, CA
8/20/2013Just a little shy of 4, but it's close enough
My stars: (5=epic "best of") (4=really tasty and want to go again and again) (3=good and will go back once in a while) (2=fair, might return for a visit if there was some glimmer of hope) (1=avoid at all costs)
Go or No? Go.
Tease: Yuzu is a Japanese Izakaya (small plates) restaurant in old town Torrance.
Why I went: They have fresh and interesting foods.
When: 1/23/13
Food: Between my wife and I, we ordered up the small plates. We had a grilled shrimp salad, sashimi, fried Maui onion, chicken skewers, grilled beef, soup, rice, and a super refreshing and tart yuzu sorbet. Everything was fresh and delicious and carefully prepared.
Service: Good. However, make sure to ask for certain things first and last if you really desire it so! Otherwise, they will simply bring them out when they are ready.
Hints/Final thoughts: This is a fun place for late night eating/drinking. The sashimi is excellent quality. Things can add up, but you can leave w/o paying a ton too if you keep your portions down. It does get very busy, so if you come during prime time you may have to wait or be turned away. Make reservations if you are coming in during prime time hours. - Poupee C.Cypress, CA

What a great little rendezvous!
Getting together with a girlfriend and she had suggested Yuzu.
Wow! I have to hang out in Torrance more often. So I arrived first and from the looks of it, I had good feelings about the restaurant.
Then my friend showed up...She already knew exactly what to order.
The Grilled Beef Tongue (with Original house Ponzu Sauce) lunch set... I ordered the same.
OMG, I just love set lunches! There are these cute little dishes on the tray that comes out to you. It included:
Four pieces of grilled beef tongue, nicely arranged on spring green lettuce with a lemon wedge and Ponzu sauce (with grated daikon radish) - the beef tongue is so tender and grilled to perfection. The best I had!
Miso Soup
Tofu with some pickled
Nagaimo (wild yam) grated with green seaweed - I am not into "slimy" veggies, but it was really good. I added this to the rice and had it with some of the ponzu sauce. YUM!
Tsukemono - pickled radish
Drink - Green Tea - always bringing out a fresh cup of tea for us.
All this food, but there was some room left for dessert:
Black Sesame Ice Cream, with black sesame sauce - Ok, I LOVE this ice cream. It is creamy, not too sweet, and good for you! I gotta find me some of this black sesame sauce...it is soooooooooooooooo good!
Service - Great! and Very fast, despite the lunch hour rush.
I will be coming back for more! Itadakimasu! - Nick H.Anaheim, CA
6/16/2010*****"Yuzu Enhanced Dishes." One of My New Favorite Japanese Restaurants! *****
One of my new favorite Japanese places in LA..if not my favorite. I don't understand the 4 star rating and can only figure it is on the price. Also, the hostess explained that lunch is very busy and there is a wait. Otherwise, people are taking the food here for granted. It is quality and tasty..without a doubt. My service was superb. Everyone was friendly and I felt as if I was home!
The menu is extensive ranging from Izakaya to Yuburi and Sushi. The restaurant is nice inside..a tad on the fancy side.
~Beef Tataki 5 Stars
This was my first dish I ordered and it was highly suggested by the hostess. It was one of the daily specials. The meat was perfectly sliced and abundant in flavor. Rich. The tomatoes were ripe, crisp, and sweet. This may have been the best tataki I have had. Small portion but packed a huge taste.
Ponzu was thick and rich and strongly accented with yuzu. I could have eaten this by the spoon full. The balance between the duck and the ponzu was perfection and its best. I can't help but think that this ponzu was made especially for the duck.
~Fried Chicken (Hinadori Karaage) $7.50 4 Stars
Initially, I felt the chicken, while perfectly cooked, was average in taste. However, I kept think about it and, a day later, have changed my opinion. It was chicken. It was not flavor accented by chicken. It was perfectly prepared chicken with a touch of flavor. My date even said that she did not need a napkin because it was not very greasy.
The chicken was marinated in soy sauce and had hints of ginger and garlic.
~Kobe Beef Menchikatsu $7.95 4. 5 Stars
Again, small portion but big in taste. Quality. Minced Kobe Beef deep fried with onions. Tonkatsu sauce was perfect.
~Izakaya- Gyumotsu Konabe $16.00 5 Stars
I hate giblets, but this soup had the best broth I have had in the longest time. The dish, again, is prepared and placed on your table for you to boil. It is a smaller hot pot with beef motsu, cabbage and Chinese chives. I have to admit I left a few pieces of giblet, but it went perfect with the broth and veggies. I am sold on this dish! Don't order this unless you like giblets! There are other choices with rib eye (Tobanyaki).
~Yuburi Aigamo $12.00 4.5 Stars
Thinly and strategically sliced duck (cross-bred wild and domestic). One of the better duck dishes I have had. The ponzu dipping sauce was absolutely amazing. The ponzu was made to compliment this duck. Ponzu was hand created and had the freshest and most delectable yuzu flavoring.
~REGRETS-House Special Yuzukiri Soba.
I regret not ordering this. Twice the hostess suggested I try the Soba. But she also suggested the other dishes. My stomach just could not hold another morsel. The noodles were stated to be made with a yuzu rind. This is for sure the first dish I order on my next visit..which will be real soon.
The dishes seem cheap but are small. I ate all of the above over about an hour period. Be prepared to spend a little money..but worth it!
Yuzu..a reason I would leave the OC to eat!
