Yoga...in a cemetery? Really? I mean, I love me a good corpse pose, but, really?
I hear you skeptics, but before you scoff at me or tell me it's disrespectful, picture this: a peaceful oasis away from the city, overlooking a gorgeous view of the Schuylkill, a gentle breeze, shady trees rustling, and a small semi-circle of yogis on the sidewalk. Laurel Hill has an instagram account. Their tagline is "We may be a cemetery, but our social life isn't dead. This is not your regular cemetery. They have events here all the time which range from Cinema in the Cemetery to Photography strolls late night and the history behind this place very much lends itself to a peaceful yoga practice.
Emily (she teaches at Studio 1831 and did her teacher training at Raja Yoga) leads a challenging but extremely relaxing all-levels class with one of the best views in the city. The class ranged from 3 giggly older ladies (there were some wardrobe malfunctions), to some seasoned yogis, and some first timers (it was a small group of us-maybe 10). The class was more hatha than vinyasa flow, with emphasis on holding poses, meditation, and breathing rather than rushing through a high intensity fitness workout.
You can pay online for $20 (with a cc fee) or in cash when you get there, and there are refreshments after class! (11am is totally not too early for wine...and if you disagree there was lemonade, iced tea, hummus, nuts, and fruits and veggies too!)
Classes are second Saturdays of the month at 10am and last Wednesdays of the month at 6:30pm until September and are BYOMat. Check it out, Your corpse pose will never be the same.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
