About the Business
Established in 1965. Born in a rustic village on the outskirts of war-torn Naples, Umberto worked the fields of his father’s farm to help feed his family of 13. The seventh son of eleven children he quickly learned to make the best of what little he had and gained an abundant appreciation for the simple gifts nature provided. Umberto learned of the promise of America and yearned for a better life, so while still a teenager he and four of his brothers and sisters made the long journey to the United States and settled in Brooklyn. He saved every dollar he could to send to his mother and father in Italy and put a small amount away with the hope that one day he would start a business of his own. Determined to Live the American Dream, Umberto and His Younger Brother Joe Scraped Together All of Their Hard Earned Money and In 1965 Original Umberto’s of New Hyde Park Was Born.

Food was tasty although nothing extraordinary. Dinner entrees were decently priced and generously sized. Comfortable for a large group. Service is friendly and attentive.
One thing I would say is - do NOT order the Sangria. Against our better judgment of ordering sangria at an Italian restaurant, we ordered a pitcher even after reading that the red sangria was made with Pinot Grigio... Really? $28 pitcher of swill / cough syrup.
I'd rate this 3.5 if I could.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Patricia H.San Francisco, CA01Mar 12, 2024
Had a gathering of 10 friends last Sunday. From the moment we walked in everything was great. Food was excellent and the prices were really reasonable. Big shout out to Eric, our server, who did everything to make sure food drinks and group photos were perfect. Having such a large group on a Sunday, reservations were made and the table set up and placement were terrific. Thank you to everyone from the host to service staff.

Came for a christmas party last night. I basically needed to be rolled out of here because the food kept coming and I couldn't stop myself.
For appetizers we had mozz sticks, rice balls, calamari and grandma pizza and all were incredible. i loved that each dish had a different sauce.
Next was a greek salad and the dressing was perfect. I didn't want to fill up on salad to be honest so I didn't eat much but I really enjoyed the bit that I did eat.
Then they brought out the best penne vodka I have ever had. The most delicious sauce and perfectly al dente pasta. This was my favorite part of the meal.
Finally for the entree I chose chicken parm. I tend to like my chicken parm crispier than how they serve it, but I definitely still enjoyed it.
And for dessert they brought out italian cheesecake but I was way too full to eat it.
Service was top notch. My soda was constantly being refilled, there was plenty of wine on the table and the servers were fast and efficient.
Sorry no pictures. I was enjoying the party!Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 27, 2023Updated review
I was hoping this experience would be better than my last...This past Wednesday, we dined in and ordered the spicy calamari, Sicilian pie and one regular slice. Our waiter was great, at first. After he took our appetizer order, he disappeared! He never came back to the table. I had to flag down another waiter to order additional food.
The spicy calamari was good, not great. It was lightly fried with sautéed onions. It had a little kick. I much prefer the version at La Parma. The Sicilian pie was steaming hot, and well done as requested. Delicious! I had to ask another waiter for the one regular slice I also ordered. Again, it was good, not great.
Stick with what they're known for, the Sicilian! I just wish their customer service was better.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 18, 2023Previous reviewLast night, my parents and I decided to grab some pizza at our local landmark, Umbertos in NHP. I was surprised to see only a few tables taken. I know it was a Wednesday but there is usually always a crowd, even for pick up orders.
We walked in and were quickly seated. Our waitress took our order: a well-done cheese pie for my parents and one white slice, and one sicilian for myself. All cooked well done. A basket of 2 pieces of bread a few garlic knots were placed on our table. Even though the knots were lukewarm, there was not much garlic flavor at all. They had a light dusting of garlic and were rather dry.
Not within 5 minutes, a hot cheese pie was placed on our table. It was well done, as my parents like, but it appeared to be a bit oily. I inquired as to my 2 slices since I was the only one not eating at this point, but my waitress or any waitstaff was nowhere to be found. I went up to the pizza counter to get my own order and was told it was not ready yet. A manager saw me get up and ask. Finally, I saw my waitress. She then brings me my one sicilian slice (where is my second slice?). It was not well done, in fact, it was cold. I told her, inquired as to my other slice and asked why everything was not brought at one time. She was not apologetic and even obnoxiously asked me if I wanted to cancel my 2 slices. After some time, when my parents were basically done with their dinner, my 2 slices were brought to me.
I was not happy with the service at all, which obviously contributes to your whole dining experience. Not one employee showed any interest. The manager did not address my situation or even show any interest in my dissatisfaction. If my 2 slices were not ready, a pie should not have been brought to the table. When people dine, they want to eat together at the same time. The only saving grace was the taste of the siclian slice. That was delicious. I would pass on the knots, the round pie and the 2 tiny glasses of soda they sell. I am not in a rush to go back. Employees should at least pretend they care and not take our business for granted. Customer service makes all the difference as far as I am concerned. - Apr 12, 2024
What looks to be a big chain is actually quite lovely. We sat in the restaurant/take-out area and were able to sit at a table and order slices and wine. Love that you can order slices at the table and aren't required to order a full pie. The grandma lives up to the hype, not too thick, sauce was solid and the right amount of cheese. We also enjoyed the regular slice. I'd definitely pick up a slice again if I'm in the area.

I enjoyed the half Cesar's salad and the grandma pizza. The restaurant is very nice and has a family atmosphere..
The waiter was OK and spoke some English, but it appears he forgot to bring us the bread knots that everyone else enjoyed.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kavinie S.Elmont, NY0114Apr 24, 2024
Classic pizza spot with great food! Love the grandma slice here and penne vodka. Buffalo chicken slice is also a fave, definitely recommend!

I called in this order. For almost $50 total for a penne ala vodka and eggplant rollatini with spaghetti, I was expecting to be blown away but honestly, all I could think of is mehhhhh. Food was very disappointing. Sauce with the rollatini was super bland, so was the penne ala vodka and the penne and spaghetti were overcooked. It tasted gluten free. I could make a better sauce than this and actually ended up having to just to save it. The pizza sucks for sure but I figured the other food might be better. Boy was I mistaken. The bread they provided with it was also unimpressive. This is what people rant and rave about? Please!!!

Easily the best pizza on Long Island, and that's coming from someone whose entire family was born in Italy.
My friend and I ordered a Sicilian pie and it was cooked so quickly. The flavor was delicious, the sauce was perfect and not too sweet. The staff was super friendly and the service was great.
On a Friday, this place is slammed, so I recommend coming early. 10/10, worth the visit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
