OK, like the time I followed the arepa lady I looked this place up all because of a Facebook post.
I ordered the Torta Puma, he laughs and says " you think you can eat all that? " I take this as a challenge....needless to say he was right it's a torta to be shared between 2-3 people you won't be disappointed.
It was amazing
We we looking for this place for an entire weekend, after watching the documentary in NYC TV a few weeks before.
It turns out it doesn't operate out of the truck in 111th and Roosevelt Avenue anymore
*** Watch out: there's different tortas truck parked at that spot now that is NOT TORTAS NEZA ***
Tortas Nexa is now the tiny storefront WIndow of a bar (yes, a watering hole) on 96-16 Roosevelt Avenue (closer to 97th street). It's very easy to miss. I passed by it without noticing at first. There is no sign, just the menu affixed to the wall.
Anyway, totally worth the hunt down. My husband got the PUMA and I got the TORO. It's amazing to watch the TORTAS being made. Someone came and got an order of 7 while we waited. We took ours to go because let's face it, with a sandwich as big as your head, a lady cannot be seen eating that in public! LOL.
The PUMA is so big that my husband could barely eat a quarter of it. I ate half the TORO. Both very delicious.
Just keep in mind, this is oh-so-delicious street-meat and you'll be feelin it the next day
Tortas Puma, oh yes, this is a gigantic sandwich!
This is probably not the first thing anyone would even think of for a Valentine's Day late lunch (after a fancy tray of breakfast-in-bed earlier!). My boyfriend took a stroll around the area and got super hungry. He was in the mood for tortas and he remembered he saw a YouTube video a while ago about this gigantic tortas made in Corona, Queens. After re-watching the video in the middle of the street, our mouths were watering!
Tortas Neza is a small little post with just a grill by the window. There was no line today so we went ahead and ordered their infamous Tortas Puma. Layer by layer I see the cook putting each ingredient on the tortas bread roll - cheese, ham, hot dog sausages, scrambled eggs with chorizo, breaded chicken, avocado, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, and mayo. For size comparison, it was just as long as the Arizona iced tea can and almost as tall as a coke can! I could not even take a proper bite of the entire sandwich from top to bottom but all the ingredients were tender enough to bite through. Now, I am not a person who likes to get my fingers or hands dirty but this tortas was pretty darn amazing!
Next time, I would like to come back for their steak and onions tortas!
Hidden Treasure!
When you arrive at the location you may be confused by the fact that the name of the place is not Tortas Neza but "Juan Bar." Not sure why... But the place will reminiscent you of a food truck in place rather than on the go. Also, you will get to see how your food was cooked and made.
The food served in here mainly consists of tortas, which should be similar to a hamburger but on steroids and with latin flavor. They have a variety of tortas with different combination of meat, veggies, sauces, and others.
I ordered the famous Torta Puma. It was huge, and it was made of lots of meat: sausage, beef, ham, and others. Definitely worth $15 for it. I could not finish it in one eating. I had to take a break and save it for the next day.
Another one that I saw to be a potential torta for the next time is the Torta Cruz Azul, which is made of steak and cheese. When I saw it being made I had cravings for it, I wanted to buy one of it as well. But I couldn't because I knew that the Puma would fill me up. Anyways, I will leave it for the next time...
Definitely worth coming for this place for tortas as they are cheap, quick, and tasty!
In this review, I'm going to sing Rick Parsley's 1980's classic:
"Neza Gonna Fill You Up"
youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4…
We're no strangers to Tortas
You know the rolls and so do I
A Torta Puma's what I'm thinking of
I wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you what I'm eating
Gotta make you understand
Neza gonna fill you up
Neza gonna weigh you down
Neza going in my mouth, and yours too
Neza menu, can't decide
Like my girlfriend, wet inside
Neza make your waistline wide, and mine too
What to get: Any Torta. Especially the pork special.
What is a Torta: Basically a Mexican sandwich, there are many types.
Are these ones good: They are not just good. They're the best you'll ever have.
Watch Out: They open later than scheduled and close far earlier than listed (sometimes).
There is a reason why the ship in "The Matrix" (the Nebuchad-tortasneza) is named after this wondrous window of magnificence on Roosevelt in Queens. It's one of the best things you'll ever eat, in NYC or anywhere.
They say "go big or go home", but I decided to break the mold and defy the cliché, and *not* order the "Puma." After all, I'm more of a Reebok guy. But in all seriousness, I just didn't think I could handle anything that huge (that's what she said), and my wallet didn't fancy handling the $13 price tag either. The rest of the Tortas are $8, so I asked him which of those he recommended.
By "him", I mean the genius Galdino Molinero, who as Jando said, is a maestro. His Torta is *the* Torta. His bright purple hair (which may have changed by the time you see him) and his swarthy demeanour belie the truth that he is one of the most talented sandwich-makers on our planet today. If you don't believe me, do what I did, and ask for his best Torta. Whatever you end up eating... will change your life.
I want to say I'm really grateful to Galdino for telling me to get the Torta that he did. I was skeptical at first but I just went with it, and it was unequivocally one of the best things I've ever eaten. He'll tell you what he thinks you should have, if you ask him. Makes things a lot easier for someone who wants to try everything - such as myself. Aren't you curious what the purple-haired Galdino will select for you?
For me, it was the "special of the day", which was a very heavily marinaded pork shoulder (or something thereabouts) which he seemed very eager for me to try. "You wanna pork?" he said. "It's a special. Have the pork." Okay. So I had the pork. Oh my f***ing god did I have the pork.
Well you can see in the pictures, my $8 pork special Torta was hugenormous. It was vastargantuan. It was one of the messiest and juiciest sandwiches I've ever eaten. I can't even describe the taste to you because it is otherworldly and the English language does not do justice to this sandwich. I have had a lot of good sh** in a lot of places and this is one of those things which I crave on a daily basis. The thought of it makes me salivate and cry (sort of like my ex-boyfriend's nether regions, come to think of it).
Is it the best sandwich I've ever eaten? It may be. Is it the best Torta I've had anywhere? By far. There isn't even a competition, and I've had a lot of Tortas. You need to make your way over to Queens and go up to his little window adjoining the Juan Bar on Roosevelt, right in the heart of the greatest food neighborhoods - quite possibly - in the world (Jackson Heights/Elmhurst/Flushing/Corona).
I am literally counting down the days until the next time I am in Queens so I can come back here and get another one of these. I can't figure out if I should get the same one (if he even has that special), or something different. Or both. Mwahaha.
If you only try one sandwich in all of NYC, try this one. If you only eat one Torta in your life, eat this one. It will ruin you for all other Tortas. It. Is. That. Damn. Good.
You've known this torta not so long
Your tum's been aching but
Mouth's too dry to say it
In your bedroom we both know what's been going on (and I promise not to tell anyone on Yelp)
You order a Torta and you're gonna eat it
And if you ask me what I'm packing
(Pulls down pants)
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
Neza gonna fill you up
Neza gonna weigh you down
Neza going in my mouth, and yours too
Neza menu, can't decide
Like my girlfriend, wet inside
Neza make your waistline wide, and mine too
Hole in the wall that makes your mouth water from the instant you walk up. The owner is extremely friendly and if you decide to take your torta the the bar next door to eat it there--the torta owner will pop over and have a lively conversation about ingredients, quality and his inspiration on how he creates his tortas.
It's located on one of the busiest street in Queens so be prepped for a crowd doing their shopping at the local street vendors selling their fruit, jewelry, and wallets.
Best tortas I've ever had. My crew was swapping and tasting each other's torta because we all made the trek from Brooklyn and Manhattan and we weren't going to leave without tasting just one.
We ordered 5 different ones:
Torta Regias -- the tastiest one
Torta Puma -- so packed with meat and cheese it practically unhinged your mouth to bite it
Torta Puebla - rich taste and flavored
Torta Monarca - pork was so tender it melted in your mouth
We will come again for the tortas and the owner's charm.
I didn't get to try the humongous puma torta that everyone has mentioned, but ordered the Monarca to share as the second stop in our back to back meal. Pretty full, but the torta was still amazing! luckily it was a nice day outside and there was a street fair going on, so we plopped ourselves near the fair and shared our torta. Not sure if they have seating, but it's pretty much a take out place. Definitely will be back!
Visited Saturday for an early dinner due to the hugely popular reviews if heard from friends. I centered a trip around dining here and it did not disappoint!
The location is a food stand nestled next to a very dark and small bar. You order your torta at the stand and hope to find a table at the bar next door. We got lucky with a table in the back. The bartender was attentive and very friendly.
I ordered the Torta Aguilla which was heaven in my mouth. It was served with warm fresh baked bread the size of my head :) In it, it had thin slice of breaded chicken, shaved ham, and a mound of shredded cheese. I asked for the works which included: spicy peppers (full sized and delish), mayo, shredded lettuce and thin sliced tomatoes. All the ingredients were high quality and fresh. Not gonna lie, the first bite was tough as the sandwich is huge but once you get going it's hard to stop. The flavor profiles were incredible - so well put together.
I had a chance to met the owner who personally wrapped my torta to go (I couldn't eat it all - don't judge me!). He was very friendly and chatty. It was a pleasure to meet him and share my feedback with him.
This was worth the trip!
Oh my goodness! Most amazing, huge, delicious Mexican Tortas i have ever tried! My mom has been coming here with her bf for a while & i wanted to try so i stopped by.
The chef that cooks these beauties is such a great guy! He's friendly and looks like he puts so much dedication into what he does. His wife helps him too.
The tortas are named by soccer teams in Mexico. They are huge and taste so great, they are definently worth stopping by. Theres almost always a line but worth the waiting. I myself am half Mexican and i do say these tortas are 110% authentic. If enjoy sloppy, cheesy, meaty goodness, you have to try one out. My favorite one is la 'torta pachuca' & also the famous 'torta puma.' I will 110% be coming back to try ALL of them.
PS. They also sell tacos here ;)
Go Big or Go Home! Order the first item on their menu which is Tortas Pumas. The friendly owner/chef does it best.
Preparation of the amazing Tortas Pumas involves layers of ingredients starting with the torta bread, cheese, ham, sausage, chorizo eggs, breaded chicken, avocado, jalapeno, tomato, lettuce, and mayo.
Great combination and an amazing sandwich. Will definitely come back for their next item on the menu.
Yummmm....best tortas in NY.
Puma torta is so huge that it would be great for 2 people to share.
My fav is Tortas Puebla. .
This place is always busy...but is was worth wating for.
Listen- I am as Mexican as they get. I am proudly from Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, where the weenie flows freely in the hamburgers and the tortas and I grew up in Denver where the Mexican food is on point. So when I saw the video of the giant tortas in Queens I had to go and I had to bring our giant Mexican posse along. NOTE: Don't bring vegetarian friends. There's nothing on this menu for them and he doesn't care. Just let the man feed your soul and you'll be fine.
First and foremost, this is not a food truck, it's a little hole in a wall spot that sits almost inside a place called "Juan's Bar" so look for "Juan's Bar." The bar is a little cantina where they let you eat your tortas inside, so long as you order some drinks (they also have non-alcoholic drinks- so prepare to support the bar.)
There are 19 different types of tortas, but the main attraction is the Torta Puma! Get it. I got the Torta Puma and at first thought that the different items on it would taste weird but I took one bite and was quickly corrected. This torta is so magical, it made me want to slap my husband. Everything on this was amazing- the chicken milanesa, the weenie, the chorizo, the egg, the cheese, the BREAD! He has his bread specially made and delivered every couple of hours so it's always fresh.
My friends ordered the Torta Regia (spicy pork/enchilada) and Torta Monarca (pork carnitas) along with Torta Puebla (Milanesa/breaded chicken) and they were all equally amazing.
These suckers are huge so you could share, but you'll regret it. It's worth the subway trip, the tortas are cheap and the Torta man is so incredibly humble and kind. He doesn't put up with indecisiveness or swapping out items- but trust him. He'd rather you let him do his job because he knows that he's talking about so don't be picky and a jackass about it. It's cash only so come prepared. I'll be back in the following weeks because I can't imagine my life without these tortas anymore.
Came here while in Queens going to a friends place. She asked us to bring her some food and she wanted a torta. So of course onto yelp we turn and it led us to this place. We ordered the most popular thing on the menu which was the torta puma not knowing we were secretly on a Man VS Food challenge. The sandwich was the same size as my face and was so big I shared it with my GF. She ate half the sandwich and immediately fell asleep on the couch it was so big. Definently a tasty sandwich but wouldn't order that one again
This spot is the real deal. It was a little hard to find, as I wasn't looking for a window stand in front of a bar. Gigantic and delicious tortas perfect for sharing.
Photos next time, but I couldn't stop--I had to scarf it down. I ordered the Chorizo and the Puma (with all the toppings) to share with my gf. We didn't come to close to finishing these sandwiches, despite the fact that they were scrumptious. I'll be back and do think of this place often. I only wish I lived closer to it.
The best torta I've had in ages. Thank goodness my friend and I decided to split one. The guy was preparing our torta and we realized it was the size of a baby elephant. The bread is HUGE, think of a longboard, the meat was practically 3 cow torsos, a garden of tomatoes and lettuce with an exploding avocado, and the white sauce was incredible! He didn't finish there, he chucked in some chili peppers and two handfuls of queso and stared into my eyes. I looked into his and knew this was going to be my best and LAST meal on earth.
I eat a ton, and even I questioned if I could finish one alone, you probably could if you didn't eat all day. A family of 4 came up and I'm pretty sure they only ordered one.
This has to be the best " Torta Spot " in NYC ! The place and is in queens and I'm from Brooklyn. To bad Yelp only allows me to give this place 5 stars I would have given them an extra 100 stars for their food and service !
My eyes are bigger than my stomach. 1/3 of the way through my Tortas Pumas, food wins. This is a loss I am happy to take.
Can't figure out what sandwich to order? Get the Puma. It has it all. Waiting for that behemoth to be made? Have a taco. Wash it all down with a horchata.
This is legit!! I would say it was the largest and so perfectly put together sandwich I ever seen or tasted! It's not the easiest place to find though. It is right outside a bar called the Juan Bar. It's attached to it and this little torta establishment is basically the front window of the bar. It can get busy so be prepared to wait outside the window on the sidewalk on Roosevelt Ave right in front of the place. I can't say anything not right about the food this guy puts out there. He is also very friendly and you can tell he gets a kick out of making the people happy. I was taking some pics of what he was doing and he was all for it. He's a great guy. He used to have a good truck but got the very front off the bar sometime after. I only had the Tortas Pumas so far and it's the best thing he makes although the other tortas look and sound amazing as well. There's no doubt I will be back very soon to try other tortas.
I firmly believe that any trip to Queens should involve sampling the local (global) cuisine, so when I found myself on this stretch of Roosevelt avenue mid-afternoon, I knew I had to eat something even though I wasn't very hungry.
I thought splitting a torta might be just the right size snack.
I was wrong - even when you don't go for the monster Puma, these tortas are FILLING. We got the one with bistec encebollada and I devoured that goodness so quickly I didn't notice the uncomfortable tightness of my pants until it was too late.
I will definitely be back for the puma, but I'll make sure I'm good and starving.
