The restaurant is closed. They have a for sale sign in the window.
It's a shame because they had amazing food that was always on a different level than the other sub pizza shops in the area. Overall really good sandwiches and amazing pizza.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 1, 2017Updated review
First time in this new kid on the block, kept it simple, a slice of cheese pizza, it was awesome. Great cheese, great crust, sauce was great as well I was curious to taste the house roasted pork for the Cuban it looked bland but boy was I fooled it had tons of flavor. These guys put love in the food. Give them a shot, I will keep trying different stuff on the menu and let you know.

The Proper Slice is 1/3rd open kitchen, 2/3rd open floor space with 2 tables for 3 and a counter by the window set with 4 stools.
Place your order at the counter and settle down to wait for your food to be freshly prepared. If you ask, they will provide you with a password that will gain you access to their free wi-fi. No bathrooms for the public were readily visible. There were two flat screen tvs. The place smelled wonderful!
I was told my order would take 15 minutes. In fewer minutes than that, but a touch beyond 10 minutes, I was handed a heavy black plastic bag with a greasy paper sack sticking out open. Inside, I spotted a heap of fries with smoke wafting out. As I made my way to the car, I snuck a few salty fries into my mouth. Tasty, but lacking the crisp I like. Skin on, thick cut. I kept popping them in my mouth as I made my way home, but still, when I poured out the fries in the bag back into the open box, it was a heaping serving. Very generous for $4. After a brief stint in the toaster oven, the fries crisped up nicely.
The roast pork & cheese & broccoli rabe sandwich $9 was generous as well. Half was about 5 inches long, and filled me quite well with a large handful of the fries toated up. I would have preferred the bread toasted a tad before being filled with the juicy slices of pork, fennel, and savory rabe and melted cheese, but the bread soaked up the juices nicely and was quite satisfying.
3.5 stars, rounded down. They take LevelUp.
PS - 2 days later, my car still smells of french fires...
PPS - Fries - day 1 side to half my sandwich, day 2 - snacked upon by three, yet the bottom of the box is still yet to be seen...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 15, 2014Updated review
Ordered a pizza and some truffle ties, took over an hour to get here and the fries were cold and soggy and the pizza was barely warm. The buff chix part of the pizza had massive amounts of blue cheese on it, to the point where it was inedible. The only good things were the coke in a glass bottle and stewarts root beer. The other half of the pie, the chicken parm, tasted fine, but probably would have been better if it was somewhat fresh and warmer.
I really REALLY want to like this place based on all the reviews, but it seems like I'm getting the short end of the stick every time I do.
Why Proper, why?!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Joe J!
We are thankful of your review, yet we are tremendously sorry about your bread experience. We use very high quality ciabatta rolls and unfortunately when we toast them in the oven, they may occasionally get a bit tough to bite at times if they are either overcooked OR undercooked, Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to serving you a FRESH buffalo chicken sandwich ON THE HOUSE in the very near future. Just ask for Joe, John, Jean or yuri and explain the situation and we will be HAPPY to make this right for you!
Thank you!
Joe D.
The Proper SliceJul 31, 2013Previous reviewThis review is for the buff sub:
Had a buff sub yesterday while at Castlebar, and the "guts" of the sandwich were good, but the bread was either stale or something else. It was difficult to bite/chew, and gave my jaw an unwelcomed workout during this meal. Wish it was a little softer, might try again. - Anna W.New York, NY1352011Oct 4, 2014
Oh my God, I am literally in heaven as I am typing this right now.
My boyfriend and I wanted to have a relaxing night in and order something that was both satisfying and not too expensive. We settled on pizza and when I looked up good pizza places in Brighton, the Proper Slice came up. BEST DECISION EVER.
Now, I can't really help you out if you're a plain slice eater or prefer more traditional toppings. Whenever my boyfriend and I eat pizza, we always try and get the most unusual and interesting toppings we can find. Something that we wouldn't be able find at any old pizza shop. My boyfriend really wanted the Spicy Pulled Pork and I was all about the Proper Green Eggs and Ham. We agonized for a good five minutes trying to make a choice until we noticed the 50/50 option. BINGO!
Since we live in Brighton, delivery literally took less than 20 minutes. That's unheard of in the delivery world, especially for the city.
When I opened the pizza box, it was like Christmas morning. The eggs on the Green Eggs and Ham were perfect, sunny-side up eggs that were still soft ad slightly runny, just the way I like it. The saltiness of the prosciutto and the freshness of the pesto perfectly complemented the mild egg-y flavor. As I continued through my slice, I came upon...what was this...baked potato? FUCK YES.
I gotta hand it to my boyfriend though, the Spicy Pulled Pork blew me away. To be honest, I can't even remember how good the pork itself was because I just couldn't get over the sauce. Mmmmm. Sweet and tangy with a hint of spiciness. Made even better by the pineapple. That's right. PINEAPPLE.
I have never physically been to the Proper Slice so I can't say what the restaurant experience is like, but as far as delivery goes, Proper Slice is pretty dope. And my stomach agrees.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 26, 2015
My first experience with the Proper Slice came in the form of a Proper Grilled Chicken with pesto.
Pros: the sandwich was huge. Easily two meals! Pesto was delicious.
Cons: the chicken was dry and flavorless. Would not order again.
My second venture I gave it another chance and ordered the Chicken Pesto pizza (what can I say? I'm a chicken pesto person).
Pros: A small pizza from PS is 2-3 meals--pretty good value for a $13 pizza. Also, the crust was delicious!
Cons: Again, the chicken was dry and unappealing! I am left to assume that PS simply does not do chicken well.
My third and subsequent experiences (my friends really love the place) I went with their small Veggie pizza--and the third time was certainly the charm!
The veggie pizza features roasted red peppers, onions, olives, mushrooms, goat cheese, mozzarella, and artichokes. Never have I ever had artichokes on a pizza, and they truly took me by surprise.
The pizza was nowhere near as "green" as I typically find veggie pizzas, as there is no green pepper or broccoli in sight. However, the goat cheese and artichoke give the pizza a certain tang that makes it totally delicious.
I wish they'd add green peppers for the crunch and visual appeal, but otherwise, this pizza gets two thumbs up! One of my favorite foods that I'll certainly buy again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Erik O.Boston, MA77219220Jul 9, 2012
This place is great.
The pizza has a style all to itself. Is is the cheese or the sauce? I dunno, but it's unique.
The chicken parm sub is bonkers good. The break for the subs is awesome.
Also, I enjoy that they use the level up app for payments. If your into that techmology stuff.
All the workers are hella nice too.
One wish: get some more "standard" toppings. I would love to be able to add green peppers to a pie or sub from there. JustSayin
Another wish: offer a half sub/salad option. Subs are huge, and I'm trying to watch my figure over here. #littleselfcontrolaroundfoodlikethatHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mr. Bean B.San Francisco Bay Area, CA3597633Apr 1, 2013
The Proper Slice to me is really is as good as it gets, at least on this side of The Charles. How appropriate is it that this pizza joint is so PROPERLY located in my hometown?
02135.... Take a fcukin' bow.
Disclaimer: This review solely accounts for the Proper Steak pizza.
The crust is thin and crunchy, not at all soggy. It has a well orchestrated medley of cheeses on the slice, to the point where I question how they all get along in such close quarters - but they do, and with little to no effort.
Be sure to put this joint as a definite on your pizza 'hitlist' in Boston.
P.S.
There are only a few true indigenous Allston/Brighton bred remaining. We must keep our swagger alive and well my people. Regardless of where you're at in the world, represent us righteously!

Mr. Bean Z,
We appreciate the kind words! We will do our part as long as your people do their part to support us!
We are honored to be on your "hitlist" and look forward to serving you and the greater Allston/Brighton community for time to come! - Andrea F.San Francisco, CA1145223Oct 31, 2011
I've only tried the cheese ($3) and the pesto chicken ($4) slices, but I liked them. (Photos attached above.) I think it's a good alternative to Upper Crust. Man can't live by Upper Crust alone.
The crust was crispy and crackly along the bottom, but also quite chewy, which I liked. There was a lot of cornmeal along the bottom of the slice, also. (The crust is definitely better than Upper Crust. Another pizzeria with good crust is Pino's, in Cleveland Circle, but it's a lot more of a standard greasy cheapo pizzeria.) The cheese and tomato sauce seemed to be of a good quality. There wasn't a whole lot of tomato sauce in the cheese slice I ate--I wouldn't mind if they added more sauce. But, it seems to me that less sauce is a common trend here in Boston, from cheapo places up to nicer pizza places as well.
I would go back here.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lonny C.Providence, RI082Mar 22, 2016
How was the pizza there, you ask? I wouldn't know. I called 5 times and no one answered. I even waited between the calls. It went to some voice-mail that was full so I guess they never check it. I called at 6pm. "Proper food. Proper taste." How about proper phone number?
I can't even order online! How are people expected to place an order? I don't intend on going there to put an order in and wait 20-30mins. I was hoping to try the proper 4-way sampler pizza and was looking forward to it. The phone number I called, which is all over their website, was 6177894889. Am I missing something? I had high hopes and was absolutely disappointed before I even tried anything there.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 21, 2012
I was really impressed by the proper burger and the proper steak bomb. Both sammiches had great texture and great bread! The proper burger: freshly ground beef with cheese in the middle and wrapped in bacon! There goes my cholesterol. I actually expected the proper burger to be filled with more cheese, but nevertheless the overall quality was delish! The proper steak bomb was huge and stuffed with meat. Albeit, if you're not in favor of greasy hot messes, then you might want to hold on the sammiches.
Sadly, their counters were too tall for me, so I had to tip toe and yell to talk to the guys behind the counter and get their attention since they didn't see me... (sad life of a short person) And I will overlook the fact that although I ordered takeout for 4:30, got there about that time, only to find when I asked the guy about my order, he looked unsure about there being such a thing, and that after he found me order, my burger had been sitting on the counter in a box ready to go no where, unlike the steak bomb which had been ready to go. But I had a livingsocial deal, so the meal was a steal. Hehe.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
