6/5/2020We stopped by Black's on the way to Gonzalez for a family road trip.
There was no line because of the state 50% max occupancy mandate during the Covid-19 panic.
Super nice staff and great place!
We sampled the moist brisket, turkey sandwich, pecan cobbler and potato salad.
The brisket had flavorful bark with strong salt and pepper notes. The turkey sandwich was smoky and moist. Pecan cobble is brilliant. The potato salad was mustard based and fine.
Really good and I'm the ballpark of Millers in Belton or Franklins. Definitely one of the elites and close to the top of the pack.
Overall, we'd go back for fantastic family experience. - Sylvia I.Houston, TX
4/29/2020Did you know this original Black's downtown is almost 90 years old? I passed through town after losing weight and decided to try their pecan pie to celebrate. Although it is a small piece you can gobble in a few bites, it is a good price at $2.50 and it tasted fresh and sweet. The ladies serving were extremely friendly and gave me a very nice souvenir cup, and was happy to tell me more about the food and restaurant. I am writing during Lockdown 2020 and the restaurants are preparing for reopening, and I happened to be there while they were rearranging. I cannot wait to come back and try their BBQ, which I heard tasted really good. I was happy to see that their side dish buffet is open (on the server's side); good example of how to make it work!
I liked the authentic country decor and quirky signs. They will make you smile! I asked what was that machine under the condiment counter, and it is a 100 year old safe! I asked what do I win if I crack it open, but he said he wondered what's in there, too! This place is very cool with a sense of humor. I imagine when people eat there the environment is really happy. I hope I can bring my family here at least once.
Enjoy! - Kiki H.San Diego, CA
4/26/2020*Business Open/Delivering During the Pandemic* review: I have never been to their physical location before but I must give a shout out to their amazing delivery service! It's hard to find excellent brisket in San Diego, and since quarantine makes you do crazy things, we ordered brisket and sauce from Black's. It definitely did not disappoint!! Everything arrived well packaged and frozen still. The reheating directions were spot on and although i haven't had Black's fresh/in person, you could have fooled me because this tasted amazing! It was super moist and tender, fatty and flavorful, no knife needed. The tangy sauce paired excellently with the rich brisket. I will definitely order from here again when we get a brisket craving and I hope to visit in person one day!

5/16/2020They seem to be resting on their laurels and history.
I ordered a beef rib. It looked too fatty but I was going to go ahead and accept it.
Then they rang it up at the end of the line. $26.90. No sides, no drink and almost $27? I kindly told them I was switching to a sandwich.
My brisket and sausage sandwich was $12.98. It was double meat, but the Westerner at Dickeys BBQ is $7.95 and has about as much meat.
The taste was OK, but like so many other reviewers I found the brisket salty. The sausage was ok, but the portion was small.
The family in front of me (parents and three kids under 10) endured a bill of about $80.
Staff was OK, but not particularly friendly. Their single line service process is inefficient.
I have been to Black's many times, but today will be my last. Sorry to see such an institution decline. - Crystal R.Houston, TX
5/14/2020I honestly think it's hard to review restaurants right now because of this crisis, with low staff and low customers. That being said, we enjoy the food. Not sure if it lived up to it height. We decided to dine and they gentleman working in the seating area was super friendly. The rest of the staff was not. My bf literally was like, shoot I just got held at to pick my sides. I know people are stressed right now but customer service does go a long way. They are set up pretty good to keep thinking safe and clean.
The brisket had great flavor, however, it was super salty. We got the fatty brisket and the outside was just a tad dry but the inside was pretty moist.
The ribs were ok. The sides: black eye peas were under cooked, Mac and cheese was lacking flavor, green beans was good, baked beans was good (if you like ranch style, i like more of a sweet baked bean), and the mashed potatoes and gravy was sooo good.. that gravy was delish! They did have really good deserts to choose from which we saved for tonight.
I'll will for sure go back to try later! - Lupe M.The Woodlands, TX
5/26/20201 check-inHands down the best BBQ I've ever had. Meat was cooked perfect. Juicy and full of flavor. Even the side were amazing.

6/8/2020The most tender brisket and delicious homemade sausage. The potato salad was just average though. Be prepared to feel a little overwhelmed if it's your first time because the line will be long and moving quickly. We panic ordered and ended up spending way too much money for two people. Be aware that the big beef rib will cost over $20 at least for one. You pay by the pound and one rib is over a pound because you are mostly paying for the giant bone.

6/20/2020I don't know what the fuss is about but the bbq here is not that great. The beef rib is salty and lack flavor. The pork ribs are salty and dry. Sausage was below average. I did like the turkey. The salt lick remain to be my top bbq Destination in the Austin/hill country area.

4/8/2020I've eaten in and loved the food especially the sausage links. So with grocery shopping becoming tougher and tougher right now, I decided to have some shipped. I will attach photos of what they say they shipped, what I received and the shipped links are 1/2 the size of what I had when I dined in and on the photos from shipment email. Shame on you Blacks.

1/6/20201 check-inI really enjoy coming to Black's BBQ when I visit Austin, and this is the first time I've gone to the original location in Lockhart! This is generally my go to barbecue spot in Austin which generally has a very reasonable wait. They have a large parking lot across the street and there is plenty of street parking as well. I arrived around 10:30AM on a Friday and there were very few people at the location.
When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by the smell of delicious BBQ. You order your sides first and they have many many of them! I decided to try the mac n cheese, cream corn, cole slaw, and potato salad. Most the sides were pretty solid, wasn't in love with the mac n cheese though!
The star of the show is definitely the meats and it's the reason I assume you come here. The brisket here definitely isn't as good as Franklin's but the line is much more reasonable out here and it is still fairly tender! Beef ribs are something you should definitely treat yourself to, but it's not something that you're likely to finish by yourself because it's so doggone big! I'd definitely recommend coming to Blacks to get your BBQ fill when you're in Texas! The only BBQ joints I rate as 5 stars are Franklin's in Austin and then Little Miss BBQ in Phoenix! - Diane V.Wheaton, IL
5/31/2020Our niece and her husband (who we met for the first time) treated us to dinner here last night when we expressed our desire to taste good Texas barbecue. This place was one of two that top their list, the other one not yet open for dine-in. They ordered a large pan that consisted of ribs, turkey, brisket, two kinds of sausage - all delicious! In fact, the brisket was the most tender and tasty that I have ever eaten! Sides included yam, Mac-n-Cheese, baked beans, excellent cole slaw and more, and sweet tea came in souvenir cups. If ever we're in this area again we will definitely go back and bring others!

12/12/20191 check-inFor my cousins birthday we decided to visit the original blacks bbq in Lockhart. It was a drive but we did enjoy the drive and the day. We ordered family style but you may order individual which most people do. The sides were amazing. We ordered one beef rib, 1/2 lbs brisket, 2 sausage and a 1/4 chicken. It was way more than enough for the 5 of us. We also had 6 pints of sides. My family are not heavy meat eaters but they did enjoy everything. The beef rib would probably be something they would have again.

11/3/20191 check-inSo this Sunday, we decided to make a journey to Lockhart and sample bbq. The first stop was Kruetz's market - second stop Black's. Last time I was here, I was very disappointed. So with the little trepidation, I ordered a beef rib and some turkey. The beef rib was huge - 1 1/4 lbs - very tasty - I should have used my better judgment and asked the cutter To cut it in half at least, it was just way too much. I had high hopes for the turkey, but was disappointed, it was robbery and not very flavorful. Having just had some turkey that melted in my mouth, I was expecting more of the same, and came up short. My partners in crime, ordered some brisket, and I was pleasantly surprised, it was much better than my last visit, moist and flavorful.
Turkey tough rubbery
Overall, it was a good visit, and I would rank it number two on the four places we went to this day. Mr. Black with celebrating his birthday today, and they offered everyone a piece of birthday cake. Although I did not partake. I wish Mr. Black a very happy birthday. - Suzie L.Bulimba, Australia

This is a terrific option for lunch in Lockhart. My husband and I shared an order of pork ribs and a large beef rib with 2 sides (we chose black-eyed peas and green beans). The sides were a little over-cooked but tasty and the meat was cooked and seasoned beautifully. We also loved Black's Habanero and Ghost Pepper sauce. It's not cheap but it's very very good! We loved the feel of the restaurant - it showcased their long history in Lockhart. - Jason M.Nashville, TN0 friends4 reviews
6/16/2020AMAZING FOOD! I recommend the chopped beef sandwich. Amazing job guys! I love walking into a country themed cabin looking amazing bbq smelling restaurant. Make sure to keep the flys away, but over all amazing restaurant.

2/9/20201 check-inOk before you walk in just get a game plan together you need it. You will be face with a buffet with all the quintessential sides for bbq. Each item you choose is 2.30 for sides 2.60 for desserts. So when you serve yourself take advantage and pile up. The fun part is that if you come with another person you all can team up and get sides for both. Then on to the meats... it is on the pricey side so be careful.
The pork ribs... ok
The brisket... good
The Turkey.... ok
The jalapenos sausages are amazing.
Sides
Sweet potatoes fabulous
Green beans are very good
Coleslaw good
Pickles wow
Potato salad ok
Their ice tea is very good.
Place is nice with very nice bathroom and good service.
Nice experience for sure. - Jack K.Pflugerville, TX
2/17/20201 check-inA trip to Lockhart wouldn't be complete without a stop a Black's BBQ. With a self serve sides bar you could easily fill up two plates before hitting the meat counter. Make sure you take advantage of the ten frozen links of sausage for ten dollars deal. Great to take home for partying or any get together.

3/4/2020stopped in on our way home. the wait wasnt too long, lines move pretty quick.
the food ALL of it was good. beef rib, brisket. the burnt ends were a little too much for me but everything was great. - JD H.Cave Creek, AZ
11/8/2019Lockhart Texas is home to not one but three of the worlds best BBQ Joints errr Restaurants.
Smittys...Kreutz and Blacks.
On this Formula One race weekend when we sampled them all....Blacks Barbecue wins by a lap. Outstanding juicy brisket with a perfect bark all the way around.
Ribs (pork spare) are the best I have ever had. Just magic and no sauce required.
Sides look amazing but I have never sacrificed valuable space that could otherwise be used for brisket and ribs - Brooks B.Conroe, TX
4/13/2020Service was fine, main problem was that the food was OK but for the price you pay, you'd think it would be handed on a gold tray from god. me and my wife got a little bit of everything, nothing crazy, just enough for two people to eat and mind you, she's a small woman, she doesn't eat much. The bill was 75 bucks. I have never paid such a price at any BBQ restaurant ever. I would expect a price like that at a steakhouse or something but this was a couple plates at a BBQ joint. It was originally 105 bucks but I asked why and they the beef rib was 30 bucks. 30 dollars for ONE beef rib. Sorry, not coming back.
