UPDATE:
We submitted Deb "The Expert" xrays to an independent radiologist, that knows nothing about the history of this....Came back as hip dysplasia with arthritis. This woman shouldn't be doing anything other than taking xrays, and should NEVER give medical opinion/diagnosis/prognosis. If we had listened to her, our dog would have suffered tremendously. Secondly, with ANY suspected hip dysplasia diagnosis, the dog should be sedated because during the xray procedure, the dog can tense up if. Tensing up causes the dog to constrict joints, making it appear if they don't have hip dysplasia when they do.Helpful 9Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 2Jan 27, 2019Previous reviewOur primary vet told us our 20-month old Golden Retriever, had hip dysplasia.
She had the images sent out to two separate radiologists, whom also confirmed the diagnosis. Even more troubling while the hip dysplasia was mild, there were indications of arthritis.
I immediately told our breeder, who promptly told me that I had wasted our money and time by going to our vet because he probably wasn't x-rayed correctly (I had also sent her copies of the xrays). She told me I needed to bring Hammy to Newport Beach Veterinarian Clinic to see the "OFA radiologist" Deb Cohen (I have the text messages to prove this), that the Golden Retriever world trusts. She asked if we would bring Hammy down to see the radiologist, and of course, we agreed.
I called to make the appointment with Dr. Deborah Cohen, not her husband, the vet that runs the practice, Dr. Jeffrey Cohen. When speaking to the receptionist, I said multiple times, "we need the appointment with Dr. Deborah Cohen" and was never corrected.
We arrived with Hammy and our breeder arrived a little bit after the x-rays had begun .The xrays were completed and we were brought into the exam room to review the x-rays with Dr. Deborah Cohen, and our breeder. We were THRILLED as we were told that Hammy didn't have hip dysplasia and there was NO arthritis. I was in tears, so relieved that our boy didn't have it.
When we first entered the room I said, "Thank you Dr. Cohen for taking the time to squeeze us in," and she responded, "No, please, call me Deb."
My husband, a retired cardiologist, began asking extremely technical questions about the anatomy, angles, and when HER official report would be ready. He then asked, "Where did you go to vet school?" Deb answered, "Oh, I'm not a vet, that is my husband." Wait, what?!
"I have been taking x-rays for over 30 years, have taken 46,000, and have taught classes to students," Deb, the non-radiologist, non-vet who had JUST DIAGNOSED OUR DOG WITH NOT HAVING HIP DYSPLASIA SAID.
I was trying to wrap my head around what was going on, "So what is your official title here," I asked.
"I'm a registered veterinary technician," Deb THE FRAUD SAID.
In California, vet tech's aren't allowed to https://cvma.net/government/veterina...ant-job-tasks/ "2036. Animal Hospital Health Care Tasks for R.V.T.
(a) Unless specifically so provided by regulation, a R.V.T. shall not perform the following functions or any other activity which represents the practice of veterinary medicine or requires the knowledge, skill and training of a licensed veterinarian:
(1) Surgery;
(2) Diagnosis and prognosis of animal diseases;
(3) Prescription of drugs, medicines or appliances."
Our breeder listened to us refer to Deb as Dr. Cohen, multiple times, she only corrected me to call her Deb, to make it seem as if we were friendly. At NO TIME, until further grilling, did she finally admit, that she wasn't a vet.
Pardon my French, but what in the f**K were we doing in a vet exam room with her telling us our dog doesn't have hip dysplasia?! We NEVER SAW HER HUSBAND, THE ACTUAL VET at any time that day.
Facebook and Yelp reviews confirm Dr. Fake Deb has done this with others.
Driving home, we were just shocked....We took the xrays that Fake Dr Deb had taken to our vet, and she was just stunned. "These are the exact same xrays I took! Was he sedated or given a sedative for this? I thought she was a radiologist! She could have really hurt Hammy since he does have hip dysplasia and extra care needs to be given for him." I burst into tears, and started researching this scam Dr. Fake Deb has.
How can her husband, the actual vet, allow her to do this?! We have filed an official complaint with the state of California because this can't be allowed to continue. We demanded that the xrays be sent to OFA, and I signed the release box allowing negative results to be made public.
I learned through this process that ANY vet can submit xrays to OFA for hips and elbows, no special license is needed.
Hammy is having a PennHipp evaluation to determine difinitevely if he does indeed have hip dysplasia. I told our breeder at the beginning of this there was no blame if he did have it. The best clearances are no guarantee.
I'm not upset about the hip dysplasia diagnosis...we have insurance for Hammy, I hate that he may have to go through surgerie(s), but I'm DISGUSTED that we were blatantly misled, and it needs to stop.
Hammy's PennHip results will also be submitted to OFA, with negative results made public. In another lifetime, I was a certified nursing assistant, and worked in a hospital. I was often mistaken for a nurse, and I ALWAYS immediately said, "No, I'm not a nurse, I'm a certified nursing assistant." - Shel G.Los Angeles, CA1795325Apr 21, 2023
Sent two of my show girls to them after a set of badly positioned radiographs were given a rating of OFA Fair.
Both girls came back with an OFA Good as I suspected after we submitted better positioned rads. Thank you so much. I will never go elsewhere.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Bill V.Orange, CA3982832Jan 12, 2024
Vet visit was good, pleasant experience at the office I made an appointment well in advance (6 months).
My gripe is that it is now 12 weeks since I got my dog x-rayed on 10/21/2023 and they still haven't sent my dogs X-rays to the OFA (I checked with the OFA and they said they haven't received anything. Now I can't get in contact with Newport vet, multiple emails sent and voicemails left but no response back. I just checked and their voicemail is full.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 2 - Courtney N.Huntington Beach, CA04Apr 16, 2024
WARNING!!! There are plenty of good vets out there, this is not one of them. They do not communicate what they are doing to your animal and charge you for care you did not receive or asked for. They bill the MAX without consulting. They recommend care that is best for their financial gain, over the animals. If your credit card is on file they will run your card for the max without a signature or approval, and you will never get refunded. At this point, they are just asking for a lawsuit. STAY AWAY!!!

My experience with the veterinarian was wonderful. The apointment went great and she was lovely. The problem is that the office never submitted my results with OFA. I was told it would take 2-4 weeks to post. It's been 7 weeks and they haven't even sent the paperwork in to OFA. Starting at 4 weeks, I called the office each week to check the status of my testing. They assure me that they will expedite my request and call me with an update but nothing ever happens. I've called 4 weeks in a row and they have still not sent in my results. I'm starting to suspect that my results have been lost but no one wants to take responsibility. Why else would there be this endless delay? As lovely as the veterinarian is I would recommend you look elsewhere for OFA testing. What good is testing if the results never get submitted?

The Vet Dr. Cohen is probably good but I wouldn't know as I used this vet clinic for OFA X-ray.
My dog got X=rayed on 11/24/23 and another breeder had his dogs X-rayed early September 2023. Up to now nothing has been submitted.
Debra had even promised OFA personnel that she will transmit everything on 01/28/24. Well, as of right now, nothing is submitted.
It took a long to wait to get the appointment, we waited, we paid her and we are still waiting.
I understand there are medical issues but they can more than hire someone to start transmitting.
Also I had requested to just give me a signed OFA Application and copies of my X-ray and I will mail it to OFA myself (as instructed by OFA since they are aware of the non transmission of a lot of other people from this Vet Hospital. But No, Debra said it will make things more difficult if she let me do the own mailing, how so!?
So 1 star to them is being very generous.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Kirsten T.Monrovia, CA0142Jan 25, 2024
We have been coming here for decades to OFA all of our Rottweilers. We have sent ALL of our local puppy buyers here for decades to OFA their dogs. DO NOT go there unless you want to never get your results. We did xrays on 9/2, I finally talked to Debbie the end of December and she said they were being sent out. Now a month later I spoke with OFA and they have not received the xrays. Called the vet AGAIN and they said they will relay the message.
This is absolutely unacceptable. We have always used Debbie because she is so good and gentle with the dogs. But to go 5 months without results is unbelievable. I have no words for how frustrating and disappointing this is.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Yvi H.Irvine, CA29148363Dec 15, 2023Updated review
This place has gone downhill fast. Now they don't answer the phone and are rude AF. I no longer recommend this place.
Helpful 3Thanks 2Love this 1Oh no 1Aug 16, 2009Previous reviewDr. Cohen is the best vet I have ever been to. He saved my dog from near death. He is super attentive and stays in the hospital all night long, you can tell he really loves animals and is not just doing this for money. I think cassie's review is extremely unreasonable, dumb and should totally be ignored. Prescription diets require a prescription, you cannot just purchase them. I think someone should stop being a dumb, blond biatch.

I think its kind of funny how people are complaining about the prices...i am pretty sure they let you know the prices beforehand and also...wth do you expect...this is Newport Beach not Santa Ana...if you do not have the money then it is really really logical to go to some other vet. There are TONS of vets out there...they may not be as good....but you get what you pay that is how the world works... - Pauline ..San Francisco, CA03Dec 31, 20231 check-in
Poor customer service, leave message and no one returns your call
They said they had staff problems, but returning calls and being up front can do a lot of goodHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Brenda M.Duarte, CA8191Jan 30, 2024
Had to euthanize my sweet dog bc he was passing and suffering but with a sedative before hand it's normally not painful but dr Jeff injected him and my poor baby screamed and was hysterical and was in horrible pain on injection before passing don't think I will ever forget it and no one or pet should go through this I've been a pet owner all my life and had to go through this years ago and my pet passed away peacefully ..please take your pet elsewhere

We specifically made an appointment for our dog so she would be a patient, as they only take emergencies if the pet is a patient of record. We had an emergency with our dog and called them. They lost our records and would not see our dog because of this. Firstly they are sloppy that they lost the records and secondly would not believe me when I explained everything.
