- Eric R.Roseville, CA2805866460Feb 22, 2024Updated review
Downtown Roseville has many excellent restaurants, bars and pubs, but in all of my pub crawling, and eating adventures, I haven't seen anything in town like Monk's Cellar, as it's a unique restaurant... or is it a pub or is it a sports bar? Monk's Cellar mixes the lines between a restaurant, a pub, and a sports bar, but it does it with class, and features some of the best upscale pub fare to be found in Roseville.
As you enter the restaurant, you're treated to a view of the full service bar. The dining room is long and narrow with the micro brewery to the left. Yes... the beer served at Monk's Cellar is brewed in-house!
How about this to enjoy... Dan enjoyed a "Nitty's Cider," brewed in nearby Clarksburg located in the greater Sacramento area. Michael, a lover of IPA went for a "West Coastin'" classic IPA, and me... I simply enjoyed a "Vernon Street Lager." Life is always good at Monk's Cellar!
From the "Appetizers" section of the menu, we went with an order of "Garlic Fries" to share and enjoy.
The menu describes this delicious dish as "Our duck fat fries tossed in garlic oil with fresh garlic and parmesan cheese."
You enjoy an order of medium sized fries, deep fried to perfection in... you guessed it... duck fat! Yes, the duck fat gives the fries a very unique and delicious taste that you won't find anywhere but at Monk's Cellar.
Not to be forgotten... if you're a garlic lover, you're in paradise as there is lots of garlic with the fries, along with melted, gooey parmesan cheese, and sprinkled with oregano. Truly these are fries to remember and share among family and friends!
Great food and a great restaurant in every way.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Mar 17, 2023Previous reviewAfter a five-year hiatus, it was time to pay another visit to The Monk's Cellar, located on Vernon Street in downtown Roseville. Today would be my first chance to enjoy a visit during "Happy Hour."
As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted and seated by a friendly staff member. Since it was "Happy Hour" and the special menu is served at the bar, I simply seated myself at the bar. You'll note the well-equipped bar and the micro brewery, where delicious in-house-made beer is brewed in downtown Roseville. The decor is very "pub like" with brick walls, dark wood, and many high tables. The dining room becomes more "restaurant" than "pub" past the bar, as the long, narrow dining room offers table and booth seating. No matter where you site, the seating is comfortable and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting.
Weekly specials are posted on a board at the bar. "Manhattan Clam Chowder" sounded delightful, but I was here to enjoy the cuisine of "Happy Hour," which is offered three days a week.
The massive bar offers a wide assortment of mixed drinks and is stocked with a wide array of just about anything you can imagine, which it comes to whiskey, rum, vodka and other spirits. Beer and wine are on tap. The "Happy Hour" menu is served at the bar.
From the "Bar Area Happy Hour Menu," I went with three "Monk's Sliders," along with a "Small Duck Fat Fries." The "Bar Area Happy Hour Menu," describes "Monk's Sliders" as, "Wagyu beef patty, pickled red onions, gruyere cheese, arugula, garlic aioli and Russian dressing." During "Happy Hour," these little burgers are available for $5.00 each or 3 for $12.00. Gee... ordering three of them seemed like the right thing to do! It's interesting to note that "Monk's Sliders" are a miniature version of the signature burger on the restaurant's menu, "The Monk's Burger." Differing from the "regular" menu, during "Happy Hour," the sliders are sold a-la-carte.
Like it's big brother, "Monk's Sliders" starts out with a choice, perfectly seasoned Wagyu beef patty, grilled perfectly, just the way you order it. The beef patty is small - you're enjoying a slider, not a burger - but the patty is delicious and perfect in every way. It's wrapped around a fresh, house-made organic brioche bun, which was simply amazing. I noted the meat-to-bun ratio was perfect, even in "miniature..." Both the meat and the bun were dressed with garlic aioli and Russian dressing, to add a delicious, somewhat exotic taste to each slider.
Vegetable garnishes included pickled red onion, and arugula to add a "green touch." Have you ever heard of arugula on a burger? You'll find arugula to be a cross between cabbage and kale, resembling fresh spinach in looks, with a spicy, slightly peppery taste. It certainly added a "new dimension" to the sliders.
I truly believe the gruyere cheese set "Monk's Sliders" apart from any other burger or slider that I've enjoyed. The cheese added a sweet and slightly salty taste, and made for a very delicious and "unique" flavor to these delicious sliders.
"Monk's Sliders" are simply delicious! They're not your average "pub slider," as they're custom-made from fresh, superior ingredients, and skillfully cooked by the talented kitchen staff. Such a great way to enjoy happy hour!
The 'Happy Hour" menu offers a "Small Duck Fat Fries," which came with a small cup of garlic aioli, and made for a perfect side dish for my order of "Monk's Sliders."
The fries were cut from hand to a medium size, sprinkled with seasoned salt, and deep fried in duck fat to a perfect golden brown, to give them a very crisp, somewhat "nutty" taste. After being taken out of the deep fryer, the fries were sprinkled with dried parsley flakes to add extra taste, along with a pretty presentation. Delicious!
A small cup of mayonnaise, infused with garlic aioli - a Mediterrean delight - was included for dipping, and made a perfect dip to compliment the "Duck Fat Fries."
Between the order of three "Monk's Sliders," the "Duck Fat Fries," and the pint of "Vernon Street Lager" beer... today's "Happy Hour" meal was simply amazing! The food was delicious, the beer was "pilsner amazing" and the staff treated me like family.
"Happy Hour" at Monk's Cellar, located in downtown Roseville, CA, will bring a smile to your face, and truly make you happy...
Five Star dining all the way, in downtown Roseville.Mar 5, 2019Previous reviewDowntown Roseville has many excellent restaurants, bars and pubs, but in all of my pub crawling, and eating adventures, I haven't seen anything in town like Monk's Cellar, as it's a unique restaurant... or is it a pub or is it a sports bar? Monk's Cellar mixes the lines between a restaurant, a pub, and a sports bar, but it does it with class, and features some of the best upscale pub fare to be found in Roseville.
My visit occurred last summer, and I'm now just getting around to publishing it on Yelp.
From the "Guest Biere" beer side of the menu, I ordered a "Kwak," and I was dazzled, amazed and surprised at the presentation. In over 50 years of drinking beer, I've never had a beer arrive like this, complete with a you-can't-believe-the-glass to a custom-made stand to hole it. My friendly bartendress, Andrea, told me all of the "guest" beers, including the "Kwak," are imported from Europe.

I went with "The Monk's Burger," which is the signature burger on the menu, and can be ordered with either duck fries, or salad. Yes, the "duck" fries are cooked in duck lard, so how could I resist? The menu describes "The Monk's Burger," as "House-beef patty, arugula, pickled onion, gruyere, garlic and aioli and Russian dressing served on a house-made, organic brioche bun. Duck fries or salad." You can add an extra meat patty, or bacon, if you choose. I didn't choose, as I just wanted to enjoy the burger, stock, as the menu offered.
At $12.00, the burger and fries weren't cheap, but they were worth the price, as the food was delicious. The meat was cooked perfectly, and this burger was amazing, and it tasted like no other burger that I've had. Was it the arugula, gruyere or the aioli? I'm not sure, but it was amazing! Ditto for the "duck" fries... I didn't ask what the dipping sauce was all about - Russian dressing? - but I dipped my fries into it and enjoyed.
The cuisine at Monk's Cellar can be best described as "upscale pub cuisine," or maybe just "delicious?" The food is delicious, the staff is super-friendly, and the atmosphere is very friendly, and it's the sort of place where you could spend the whole afternoon, or evening. If you're looking for great micro beer, and a great burger in historic, old-town Roseville, spend some time at Monk's Cellar. You'll love it!
I've visited restaurant all over the west, and parts of Mexico, and have posted reviews, with lots of photos, on my web site. Check out www.erench.com. - 1267125614035Feb 10, 20241 check-in
Taco Tuesday and Trivia Night starting at 6:30 PM with Quizmaster Zack. Parked at the garage/structure and walked over.
Party of 3 for dinner, we didn't know beforehand about Trivia night but definitely joined in on the fun.
Each table playing got a paper and pen for the 30 questions. The quiz master was mic'd up, and the speaker system was very good, even where we were in the breezeway past the restrooms.
The 30 questions sort of had a theme, covering topics such as current events like the Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards, Groundhog Day, Lunar New Year (dragon and moon-based questions), tall mountains, centenarians, phobias, old wive's tales, Godzilla, oysters, 80's movie title anagrams, etc.
It was neat to be able to play along while the bites came out. We had the scotch egg, reuben fries, garlic fries, chips and salsa (x2), large pretzel, and sodas. The pretzel was substantial and fluffy good, with cheese and mustard dips. I liked the Reuben fries, too.
Team #triplethreat didn't do too shabby! Missed the 8-point last question, though.
Hadn't been in since before Covid for a Friendsgiving, but we chose this spot since The Place was closed, and it did not disappoint at all!Helpful 9Thanks 3Love this 9Oh no 1 - Mayte C.Sparks, NV1374778Apr 19, 2024
Stopped for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Got seated right away in the patio area. Good spot to enjoy lunch! Ordered drinks and food. The fish and chips were delicious-- the batter wasn't overwhelming and the fries tasted great! Our server was friendly as well! Will be back to check out other things from the menu!

Ordered a chicken Caesar salad; came out with grilled chicken tenders (size) on top. When I tried cutting them up, my salad was flying everywhere. Sent it back to get the chicken cut up. I could barely eat it - in fact didn't even finish it. The salad itself was dry and the chicken was super dry. The croutons were like rocks.
Not sure if related, but I spent the night in the bathroom being very sick. (All I had eaten later was a pb&j sandwich). So...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 22, 2023
Happy 9th Anniversary and Congratulations to Monk's Cellar! Monk's Cellar is a welcoming place that provides an eye into the Roseville Downtown community with a complementary laid back atmosphere. There are a variety of items on their menu such as food and drinks. I enjoyed the sausage on a bun toped with sauerkraut and crispy duck fries on the side with a Vernon Street to drink.
Special thank you to the following: Grease, bartender/server, Louis, general manager, and Paul one the owners for making me feel welcomed. Monk's Cellar is definitely a place you can enjoy solo and/or with a group.
As a side note: This place is an award winning place for their brewing capabilities which have garnered state wide recognition for their adult beverages i.e. beers at the California State Fair 2023.
Looking forward to my next visit.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 29, 2023
A friend recommended this place since she had eaten here many times. I had no idea about this hidden gem and I'm glad she recommended we go for dinner. We shared the duck fat garlic fries as an appetizer and she had the Scotch egg. I gave the egg a try with its mustard and I think it was aioli? It was delicious because the egg was cooked inside like an egg in ramen with the yolk not cooked all the way and then it was breaded and delicious. I had no idea an egg could taste that good. The fries were delicious too. My friend had their fish and chips and said how good they were and how she ordered them all the time.
I had the all American burger and the meat was good and tasty. The regular fries it came with were good but, it's worth substituting for garlic fries, because they're much better. It was super packed being Friday dinner time. But we were able to sit inside in an area with a couch, coffee table, and chairs. It technically wasn't open bar seating or an actual table but, the servers offered and said we could order and eat there since the wait was long and we didn't want to be outside in the heat. I'll definitely be back to try something else and our service was good and attentive.Helpful 16Thanks 4Love this 19Oh no 0 - Zak S.East Roseville Parkway, Roseville, CA011Apr 16, 2024
The service is awesome, the food is amazing, the beers are award winning and great, the bartenders are all devastatingly handsome, and the cocktails are like sex in a glass. Perfect 5/7, will come back again.

Duck fat fries!
Most everything from the kitchen here is good. Great burgers and sandwiches. For those who eat gluten-free, the gluten-free buns for the burgers are among the best in town, with minimal crumbling (IYKYK). The salads are fresh and crisp, and we love the pickled veggies and their take on Scotch Eggs.
The duck fat fries are the star of the show here, especially when paired with any of the house brews.
The vibe is often bustling, but with a friendly crowd of mostly-sober middle-aged folks. Service is a mixed bag---they have some serious customer-service-minded staff and some disinterested folks who can't keep their eyes off of their phones. With the right staff it is great, but sometimes it's frustrating, as otherwise, we love the place.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Shayna H.Chico, CA12831166Mar 11, 2024
Delicious food! Got to try a scotch egg and had, my favorite, Caesar salad with white anchovies! Birthday lunch. Service was excellent and so were the cocktails! They had a great Caesar dressing, perfect anchovies and the scotch egg was cooked perfectly. Would come here again! Cute spot in downtown Roseville :)
