The Freckled Moose is really great place for Astoria. I've been that place a few times. They have very nice selection of beers and appetizers.
Most of the time we went there for our Beer club event. Most of the times I had crab meat tater tots which was so delicious.
Summer time they have a backyard which is so nice cant wait to hangout there again on summer time.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 1205109230034Aug 31, 2018
I came here the week they opened because I was excited to see a New England Comfort food/craft beer bar open up so close to my apartment. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Mexican restaurant formerly here so I figured this would be an improvement...and it is!
The vibe here doesn't feel New England-y, it feels more like a modern wine bar that's got dim lighting, nice classy/homey touches and exposed brick walls.
I came here with my husband and our friend to have some beers and apps. We ordered their chicken wings (smoked and then fried I believe), their crab tater tots and the owner (Peter) brought us out a small peanut butter cookie for us to share that was based on a Christmas cookie recipe by his mom (awwwwwww, this cookie was banginnnnnn and I think they might be on their menu).
The wings were pretty solid. Nice sauce - good texture - could be bigger/meatier. The crab tots were delish...could have also had more of an even crab to potato ratio since crab flavor can be pretty mild if not seasoned correctly and fried potato flavors can easily over power mild crab (but the dipping sauce included with this app really ties everything together).
I had an oatmeal stout and a Lobster pale ale and both were fantastic beers I had never seen served anywhere else so 3 cheers for that! Service was great and their owner (still Peter) and I talked PokemonGo...the guy has great taste, lmao. They have something on their menu called a "Volcano Burger" that is supposedly their take on a juicy Lucy...I really want to go back for this but whenever I'm craving a burger I my legs usually go on autopilot and take me to Halsey's Tavern on the corner.
Freckled Moose is a pretty nice place though and I wholeheartedly recommend it if you're looking to grab some craft beer, yummy apps, free wi-fi (lol) and do it all in a not-too-loud and non-bro'ey environment - oh, and there is even an outdoor patio area all the way in the back.Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 12Oh no 0 - Aug 1, 2018
Great new place in Astoria. My beer club came here and hung out in the garden and had a nice time. The beer selection was good, with a wide variety of offerings. Service from the entire team was super friendly.
I ordered the crab tater tots and they were amazing. I could literally eat four orders of them at one sitting. I didn't have the nachos but they looked good.
Definitely a great addition to the neighborhood.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 11Oh no 0 - Mar 3, 2019
This place is another reason I wish I lived in Astoria. This is a great neighborhood hang out.
They have a nice selection of beer, plus a full bar.
I have not yet had the chance to try their menu, but I saw others ordering tater-tots that looked really good.
The owner and his staff are really friendly and always willing to chat with you.
If you live in the area, make sure you stop by.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Oct 17, 2018
I am so happy that there is now a place in Astoria that does trivia on the weekend! And, on top of that, a great place with really good food and cocktails and they do trivia during brunch! Came here at noon Saturday for some brunch and some trivia, and were very pleased. To take over the old location of Pachanga Paterson would not be an easy task, as their tacos were really good. Everyone in my party loved their food. I got the brunch burger, which was stuffed with fontina cheese. It was really good. However, since it was a stuffed burger, it was taller than it was wide, and the bun was full-sized, so there was too much bread for the amount of burger. Other than that, the food was gerat.
The layout remains terrible inside the restaurant, very narrow and difficult to navigate. I'll be back for trivia again soon! Go Team 50% Michael!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mabelle L.Queens, NY3843421895Aug 2, 2018
Came here based on a recommendation from fellow Yelp Elite and I was not disappointed. The restaurant opened just 2 weeks ago (from when I visited) so it's new to the neighborhood, right next to Bare Burger.
The restaurant:
Approx. 10-12 people bar seating on the left with 1 large TV on the wall
Rows of tables on the right
Outdoor area with tables, umbrellas and nice lighting
Extended outdoor area under a building, with fan to keep you cool
The staff:
The bartender that night, Kate, was super awesome. Easy to talk to, was always around if you needed something, knows when to engage in conversation and knows when to give you space, always made sure our drinks didn't go empty.
The kitchen, looks like a 2 person team and food came out relatively quickly.
The owner, Peter, lives locally in Astoria so it's always great to support local places. Super friendly and tries to get to know all his customers. He managed multiple locations of Mighty Quinn previously, started learning how to brew his own beer (which is why he only sells craft beers - so don't expect Stella or Blue Moon here), and got into cooking. Mix that recipe together and now he owns his own restaurant/bar! Some of the items on the menu are recipes from his family and passed down to him.
The food:
Crab and cheese tater tots - something I normally don't see on a bar menu (usually it's just plain tater tots) so I had to try it! Super crispy and you can see the crab meat when you bite into it.
Smoked chicken wings - I have not been able to grab my hands on smoked wings in NY so was excited when I saw this on the menu. Not a fan of spicy so was able to get the buffalo sauce on the side. Really good and can really taste the smokey flavor.
There's a bunch more items that caught my eye but will have to definitely go back next time to try them!Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Tina Z.Richmond, VA2122362Nov 13, 2018
What a cute little place! The atmosphere is very inviting and home-y, and what makes it even better is that the food is just as comforting.
A friend and I split the sourdough grilled cheese, a side of three cheese broccoli, and a side mac and cheese (yes I know it was a lot of cheese but we were on vacation). Everything we ordered was excellent. I will say the grilled cheese is nothing special, but it was still a great grilled cheese. Some stand out items that my other friends ordered was the crab tater tots and clam chowder. This establishment really lived up to their southern comfort food label and I would recommend this place to anyone in the area.
A huge shout out to our server and all the staff here as well. They were all so friendly and welcoming, which made our experience that much more enjoyable.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Jul 22, 2018Updated review
This place just opened and my daughter and I decided to check it out. We weren't that hungry so, we ordered the dry rub buffalo wings, some crab tater tots, New England clam chowder and one entree, a piece of chicken stuffed with spinach and goat cheese, wrapped in prosciutto.
I didn't think I'd really like the wings because I don't like them dry, BUT these were really good. I think the chef had a great technique to get them super flavorful and they were grilled I think. I'm not sure, but whatever he did to them was really good.
The soup was very good and clearly made in house. The TOTs were so yummy. That was our favorite thing.
The entrée was delicious but skimpy. The portion of chicken was super small, but tasted really good. It came with the best sautéed green beans that I have ever eaten.
The staff was really nice and friendly. The owner walked around and chatted with everyone. He seemed super excited about his new place.
I heard people talking about the in house desserts that were being baked on the premises. Next time I go in I will definitely try them.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jul 18, 2018Previous reviewThis place just opened and my daughter and I decided to check it out. If you're like me, you read the Yelp reviews and it's very easy to spot the phonies. The fake bad reviews and the bogus insults are too easy to spot.
My husband and I were in the area visiting family and we stopped in. We met the owner, Pete and he's very friendly, warm and you can tell he loves his restaurant!
I LOVE the atmosphere! Such a pretty place - very cozy and pleasant.
We found the prices to be very reasonable for Astoria. You can tell the food is prepared with care! Everything was delicious and tastes like home cooking!
Pete cooks steak to perfection, the clam chowder is rich and flavorful and the Oreo strawberry cheesecake is beyond heavenly!
There are so many other menu items I look forward to trying!
All in all, a very friendly, welcoming place and I look forward to returning again soon!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Diana M.New York, NY142Mar 25, 2019
We had lunch here this past Sunday on the day they were short staffed. Yes, we agree that it was not an ideal outing for customers however we want to bring some other points to attention.
When we arrived, the only server there was very accommodating. He was very friendly, but as the place got busier we realized they were short staffed.
Needless to say, each of our meals was delicious. Although the experience was longer than expected, we can empathize with what happened and will come back again.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
