Disappointed with results of the book. The staff didn't want to offer any further way to make our book look nice. I got the feeling just take what you got an go on. Would not go back. Very disappointed

Overall we were very pleased with the service we got. I recently took my wife's Bible in to get the cover redone. This was the same Bible she has read from for 20 years, so needless to say it was special. Her old cover had completely fallen off and a lot of the pages were starting to wear.
We took it in to pick colors and everything and they were super helpful in picking types of covers, colors, and other options. The price we were quoted was very reasonable, imo.
The Bible looks like a completely new book! We are so pleased with the quality and craftsmanship! I would highly recommend The Book Doctor!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 27, 2019Previous reviewOverall we were very pleased with the service we got. They did take a little longer than we were originally told, and there was a bit of miscommunication on who they called when it was ready.

This is a first class operation with a lot of Old World charm. Located on Davis Street in Oak Cliff in a building that has an old world look to it it was refreshing to find people who do book restoration the old fashion way.
I came here today because I have several books that I had stored in my attic that for some reason squirrels got to. Some of them are valuable enough that it is worth my while to consider restoration of them and so I came in for a consultation. The woman that helped us was very friendly professional and full of information and was able to use sample books in the store to kind of give us an idea of not only what they can do but how much it would cost. I will be back to have the work done and I will update my review at that time.Helpful 38Thanks 0Love this 40Oh no 0 - Daisy G.Amarillo, TX01Jul 19, 2023
If I could give 0 stars I would! These people BUTCHERED a family heirloom Bible - it literally looks like they patched it with electrical tape. To add insult to injury, they charged $238 plus my $25 to ship it to them with signature confirmation, for something I could've done myself for $5. AND, sent this in August for Christmas present, didn't get it back until May!! The owner was extremely rude when I emailed that I just needed it back because they had it almost a year at this point. I sent an email after I received my butchered Bible, stating I was disappointed in work and you guessed it....crickets. They never call back or follow through, overpriced and RUDE. Candice is the worst. I was so excited that a Texas company would do this repair, now I'm wishing I had sent it to NY or basically ANYWHERE else at this point. They RUINED this heirloom. We can never get that back. Hopefully others will see this and not trust them with your sentimentals!! The only thing that could've been worse was if they lost it entirely, but ruining it as they did just breaks my heart. The person it belonged to passed in February before I sent it to Candace/Book Dr. & it just has completely devastated me what they did to it. Do NOT trust these people.

I hope the people who read this understand that the people who work in this shop are very good at their work and take a lot of pride in it. I can honestly say that we’re all pretty nice and easy to work with; however, we have boundaries with how we let people address us. We did not butcher her Bible or overcharge her. I did not respond to this client’s last email to me because of the tone and accusations. Importantly, we genuinely don’t mind addressing questions and concerns about what we do or have done, especially from our mail-in clients. We’re nerds – we like to talk about what we do. We work hard to stay current with materials and methodologies through classes, the American Institute for Conservation, and the Guild of Bookworkers. We’ve been doing this for nearly thirty years.
For this Bible we stabilized the binding and repaired the back board where it was missing a piece of cover material, leaving the padding exposed. The material we made to fill the area is mulberry paper backed with unbleached Irish linen tinted to match the color and weight of the original material. It is nothing like electrical tape. The repair was done very well and I would show it to any conservator. I took pictures before I mailed it and have compared it to the before pictures from the client.
We received the Bible in August but did not receive the deposit necessary to schedule the work. The credit card was declined. When the client contacted us in mid-December, wanting the book for Christmas, we went ahead with the work to be helpful. At that time, she believed she had paid the deposit. We checked three cards against our records. She wanted to check her records and get back to us. We did not have permission to charge her card. Because we did not receive payment we did not send the Bible. The client contacted us May 1 asking about the Bible. We informed her that is was ready and just needed payment. The cost with shipping was $237.01. We shipped it out. - rmsmca s.San Marcos, CA051Jun 17, 2021
Had two Bibles that were falling to pieces from use over 30+ years. Trusted these folks to do complete repair- results exceeded expectations- the workmanship was absolutely flawless - not a detail missed, on both Bibles. Absolutely beautiful work! I am so impressed with their work. It does take time, however, which is understandable given the attention to detail and results - these people are obviously in demand. Can recommend without reservations- oh, also, as far as the cost: one gets what one pays for. June 2021

Over the past several years, I've taken a number of damaged/misused books to Candace and her staff and have always been pleased with the results. Two things I've learned: repairs (whether if be re-binding, re-casing, adhesive removal, etc.), can generally substantially improve the look and/or life of a book. It's important to remember you can't make an old book new again. Improve and repair, yes indeed, but understand they can do great work but as a general rule, miracles are outside of their abilities. The other thing I've learned is to be patient. Quality work takes time; it's not an overnight thing and may actually take several weeks to complete. With so far artisans now working in the book repair field, these guys view the time taken to do a job professionally and well ahead of the speed some of us would like to see.
In short, the Book Doctor is an excellent place to take your tomes for quality work - just be patient and I think you'll be pleased with the outcome.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stuart S.Frisco, TX15848Jul 20, 2017
I brought them my wife's bible. It has years worth of notes. She did not want to lose these notes from multiple pastors over the years.
The Book Doctor looked it over and gave me an estimate of both cost and time frame. They upheld their end of the deal and called me within days of the projected finish time.
My wife loves the work they did. I highly recommend them for any treasured heirlooms.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Debbie G.Carrollton, TX05Jun 19, 2018
I recently took my Bible into The Book Doctor for rebinding with a brand new beautiful leather cover. The work was stellar!! I am amazed with how gorgeous it looks after all the years of wear and tear. I don't know anything about book binding, but I can tell you, I know my Bible is good to go for YEARS and YEARS to come. Quality of work is a 10. If you have any book that needs new life breathed into it, and know you want assurance it will be well cared for while in their possession, go to The Book Doctor.

I wish I could review them on quality of service, but I cannot as this establishment never contacted me back about a project I needed done.
I contacted them the first week of May and never heard anything back about my inquiry. It is now going into the end of May. If they cannot contact back prospective clients, then how will they be with something of value?
Oh well, off to find another vendor to get done what I had hoped they could do.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Kayla R.Lucas, TX01212Jul 19, 2017
After having a terrible experience with a different book binder, I couldn't have been more relieved to find The Book Doctor. I ordered a 1st edition, signed copy of The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and wanted to have it converted from a hard-back book to a leather-bound book. Should have been simple but I chose the wrong person to it and it was awful! As an intended wedding gift to my bride, I was scrambling last minute to find someone to fix it. The Book Doctor was able to correct the almost destroyed book and made it a truly special piece all within a week! I can't thank them enough for their hard and beautiful work!!

I live in San Diego, Ca. I had been looking for a book repair business, to repair my family Bible, came across the Book Doctor. We were headed to Dallas on a family matter, hand carried my Bible on the plane. Our Uber driver, when heard the story of my family Bible, drove us straight to the business. Candice, is truly gifted in her art of restoration!! My Bible turned out beautiful!! She even kept the front cover, on the new face of the Bible. I could not be more pleased the the final result!!
