About the Business
In 1921, the Tarzian brothers, Charlie and Marty, opened the doors to Tarzian Hardware at 203 7th Avenue in Park Slope. In 1936 we moved to 193 7th Avenue, and our family-owned business has been serving our community from there ever since. All these years later, and third-generation owner John runs our hardware store with the same dedication to our customers and our community. We empower you to complete any DIY project to perfection, so you can depend on us to guide you through anything you have in mind, no matter what your experience level is. We'll set you up with the right supplies and walk you through every step to help you turn it into a success, all in a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere. The man who helped us was very knowledgeable and wasn't trying to sell us every little thing. You can tell he thoughtfully edited his reccommendations for a paint job. Prices seem fair

Tarzian Hardware is an amazing shop with great service, advise and very competitive price. Tarzian Team will help you to find everything you may need to fix and make repair at home, find articles with appropriate packaging and only buy what you need. A definitely top choice for all kinds of products, sometime difficult to find, dedicated advice from an experienced Team and friendly service.

This place is awesome. Everyone is so nice and helpful -- everything is reasonably priced and they have a great selection of anything one might need, they even have plants and a garden section. I'm always impressed that when I come here looking for random pieces of hardware, they are always able to help. Even after I moved, I would continue to come here because the hardware stores by me weren't cutting it.

Going to Tarzian is one of very-few errands that I actually look forward to, because shopping there is always a great experience.
I've been there 1-2x/week over the past few months, and the staff is always so helpful. They help me find the products I need - even when I can't fully describe it (e.g I'm not sure which size screw). They've also given me advice (e.g try soap/water before buying a latex paint remover) that has helped my home improvement projects and saved me money.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 15, 2020
Really nice hardware store that usually has whatever I need, and their pricing is decent (some items are a bit pricier than buying on-line, but I like to support my local businesses). There is always someone around to offer help. Quarters are a bit tight though, so if you're feeling skittish about Covid-era shopping, this may not be the place for you.

Always very helpful and patient and good prices! Helped me with paint samples, finding the right (rare) lightbulbs, and everything else I needed for a pandemic home project...

This place is convenient and the staff is nice and helpful but the prices are crazy. Compared with lowes or home depot, more than 2x the price. I'm all for supporting local stores, but not at that kind of mark-up. Paying $25 for a 20 lb bag of ice melt is prompting me to write this review. I'd pay less for artisinal pink Himalayan sea salt. Home depot has a 40 lb bag of rock salt for $10. This isn't the first time I've noticed these kinds of prices. Light bulbs are also more than 2x the price.
3/9 edit: Per the owner's comments below, my issue is with the fact that Tarzian charges over 2X the prices of other stores. Lowes quotes $20 for 50 lbs of the environmentally friendly rock salt. That's $.40 per pound vs. $1.25 at Tarzian. 3X the cost!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Business owner information

Peter,
We intentionally do not carry rock salt, as it is harmful to the environment, inefficient at low temperatures, and can damage sidewalks and brownstones. We only carry calcium chloride and pet safe ice melt. There is a premium to these superior products. We can order you a 50lb bag of rock salt for $10.99 at any time during the season (we get 3 deliveries per week), but have chosen not to carry or promote this product in the store.
The Light Bulb industry has been going through changes due to legislation of old technology and the introduction of LEDs. New products have entered the market, and we have seen costs for LEDs go down over the last two years, so we have adjusted our retails accordingly. We hope you come back so one of our managers can show you some of the new bulbs and prices.
3/13 edit: Looks like you're quoting their price for 50lb Calcium Chloride. We do not carry 50lb bags, as most of our customers are carrying the ice melt home on foot. Our 20lb bag is $16.99 so $0.85/lb. There's always a volume discount with this kind of product, and we'd be able to order you a 50lb bag of Calcium Chloride for $28.99. That would put us at $0.58/lb. We know it's not the $0.40/lb you can get at Lowe's, but we certainly hope they're capable of procuring products at lower costs than us and operating on a lower profit margin, or else they're really in trouble.
We are not trying to price gouge, which seems to be what you are implying. Lowe's and Home Depot can certainly beat us with price on some products, but as you initially stated we are convenient and the staff is helpful. We are just looking for a fair comparison, to a national retailer, in a public forum.

I love this neighborhood store. They have a good selection, informed and helpful staff, and are pretty reasonably priced, especially given the location! I've been shopping here since childhood and have never had any issues or negative experiences. Everyone there is also very friendly and it has that neighborly, small business vibe.
I've also been in since covid started and I was happy to see everyone wearing a mask, and appropriately distanced from one another.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
