We did uber eats today and I will rate this as the worst Indian restaurant in Austin.
We ordered paneer tikka and it was raw under cooked and portions were ridiculously small. The curries had makhni dal, which is no where close to what makhni dal is. Malai kofta was okish. For breads we had mint parantha, I found no mint on it and it tasted like it came from an unclean oven. The tandoori naan on the other hand was raw and undercooked.
The complementary rice even was pathetic, it was stale and tasted like it was made a day ago and the grain quality was abysmal.
This was my first and last time with this place, you made Austin's Indian food scene worse.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 20, 2020Updated review
Hidden gem of a restaurant for Indian food. I was feeling a bit tired from meat after a long weekend of non-stop eating, so I wanted something vegetarian for dinner and to me that means Indian food as it never disappoints and Taj Palace met the craving head on. My wife also had a craving for samosas, so may as well kill two birds with one stone.
Taj Palace is near the Linc and not much competition in terms of Indian food in the area, but that doesn't mean its bad. They have your usual assortment of curries and I opted for a personal favorite - saag paneer, which is for all purposes creamed spinach with chunks of cheese to the uninitiated, though very satisfying and filling. Pair that with some airy, spotty charred naan and you'll be pleasantly surprised how full you'll be. The vegetable samosas are good too, spiced just right, though if you take it to go, probably want to pop it back in the oven to reduce the soggy factor from the transport home.
All in all, great food!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 16, 2014Previous reviewDecent place for lunch. We got the menu option #4 for catering. They give you tons and tons of naan...way more than you would ever need...which is awesome, because honestly that's what I look for the most at an indian place anyways :).
But as for the rest of the food, it's ok, but not stunning. Butter chicken could use a bit more kick, but it is velvity and hits the spot. Beef and potato curry is also meaty and is unique but at least I can say the food here doesn't taste the exact same dish to dish.
Wouldn't mind actually coming to the restaurant to try it myself. - Michael P.Austin, TX162344Dec 1, 2021
I ordered $50 worth of food online a few nights ago. I went to pick it up and the restaurant was closed but my bank account was still charged. I tried calling the restaurant and the phone number has been disconnected. Not sure why the system still let me purchase food online. Can someone from the restaurant please contact me about getting a refund?

Definitely not bad. If you come, I can only really recommend the Tandoori specialties (though I bet the regular buffet during non-COVID times would've been a great option for the price).
So I tried this place a few times and each time was fine, but nothing was mind-blowing. The Tandoori specialties were the best thing I've tried though. I got the mixed grill and honestly, no complaints. Everything actually exceeded expectations. The meats were all spiced, albeit some of them were a little dry/overcooked, but still so tasty!
Other than that, I tried the lamb biryani, chicken vindaloo, and goat korma. Lamb biryani was the most disappointing. The lamb was fine, but the biryani... was kinda hard to finish. The yogurt also soured really quickly (I finished my leftovers 2 days after I ordered), and that was disappointing. Vindaloo was disappointing (I've yet to find good vindaloo in Austin!) because it was flat in flavor--just sour & spicy with no real depth. It was also super watery. The korma was probably my favorite out of these 3 options, but even then, it was pretty heavy with the cream and felt Americanized. The vindaloo and korma also both were pretty stingy with the meat.
Over all, if I had not tried the Tandoori specialties, I would have rated this place a solid 3 stars, though I would still recommend Taj Palace! One of the better Indian places I've tried in Austin. But, if you want to play it safe, the Tandoori specialties are def your best bet.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michael B.Austin, TX42934May 30, 2021Updated review
There are so many frustrating problems with the website that I have to update my rating.
(1) I tried to sign up for the 10% coupon on the home page, but the link is dead. It goes to a page that says, "Mailing List Not Active. This mailing list is not currently active. Please notify the website owner."
(2) Home page says ""Lunch & Dinner Buffet...Tuesday is our all vegetarian buffet!" But when we visited for the Tuesday lunch buffet, it wasn't vegetarian. Staff said that only the dinner buffet is vegetarian, but that's not what the website says!
(3) The Contact Us page says "Tue: Closed". That's opposite of what it says on the home page.
(4) When I tried to send the above on the Contact page, the form wouldn't submit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 26, 2019Previous reviewFood is great. Glasses were very nice and impressive. Low lighting, elegant atmosphere.
TIPS:
(1) Their website says that Tuesday is the all-vegetarian buffet, but doesn't mention that that's for the dinner buffet only, not lunch. However, we went to the Tuesday lunch buffet and there were *lots* of vegan options, not just vegetarian.
(2) Dinner buffet is Monday and Tuesday only.
(3) If you want vegan bread, ask for roti, not naan. - Nov 9, 2019
Came late and was seated. We waited forever to get waited on. Finally ordered food and samosas. The samosas came and were small and the inside was still partially frozen. They weren't good aside from that compared to other places we get them. We had to send them back and have it taken off the ticket. We ordered tadka dal, aloo gobi and dal makani. They were all really good. The garlic naan and rice were also good. They are very slow, but we would try it again.

The guy mentioned his restaurant has been in business in 30years. But the food is so sad. We ordered Fish tikka, Dal tadka and Rasmalai. Everything was bad.
Fish didn't have any flavors from inside. Clearly there was no marination.
Dal tadka had no tadka. It was just boiled cooked for sick/ill people like you get in hospitals.
Rasmalai he said he made fresh for us. But it was so bad. The malai cakes were hard. And the rass was so thick.
Very disappointed.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Arch T.Austin, TX22117334Dec 30, 2020
This is my go to restaurant for North Indian cuisine. I always get their Tandoori roti and palak paneer and these dishes are on point! I sometimes venture out to try different things on their menu and they have been pretty good. I can't comment about their dine in as I have never dined there and only been doing take out for years. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for standard North Indian fare at a great price.

I ordered this via Door Dash. We got 2 orders of chicken tikka masala - one normal and one spicy. Both of our dishes tasted watered down. The spicy one was better than the non-spicy one, but both lacked flavor development. The garlic naan was delicious. Overall the portions were not huge.
