There was some good and bad things about this place. It took a really long time for my order to be served ~30minutes. There were some good things about the basil chicken i ordered. The sauce they used was very addicting. The rice was nice with the acidity of the cucumber and shredded carrots. One thing i didn't like was the chicken was boneless and tbh kinda hard. It makes me think that the chicken was old. For the money you are paying, you are definitely getting your money's worthHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1985482359Jan 4, 2020
Toggling between a 3 and 4 star review, ultimately settling at 3.4 stars - solid service, no wait, hit and miss with the food.
Ta Platter - on the expensive side because it's $16 for 2, and adding $8 per person quickly adds up. includes fried egg rolls (on the greasy side, but tasty), Shiitake Rolls (the token veggie item), Monsoon shrimp rolls (what you would normally see as "Spring Rolls" - fresh and herb vibrant) and butterflied prawns.
Potatoes Garlic Fries - an interested add to the menu - it's just shoestring fries with garlic like you would find in any diner or burger joint. I guess it's never a bad time for these.
Purple Yam Chowder - it's not everyday you can eat a purple colored soup, so we tried it. It definitely had a floral/herbal component in the aftertaste that I didn't personally like. The Yam flavor wasn't strong enough for me.
Imperial Fried Rice - really well done, might be the best dish. Comes with bits of shrimp, chinese sausage, presented in a think layer of scrambled egg. I really liked it and could have eaten the whole thing.
Malaysian Curry - chicken, loaded in a pool of curry along with veggies, sweet potatoes and egg plant. This was a slight miss for me as the sauce could have had more spice/character and a little on the thinner side.
Cubed Steak - tossed filet mignon with mixed greens. Wish the steak was more medium rare - otherwise, plenty of flavor here. We coupled it with some bowls of coconut rice, as there was more sauce than expected.
The restaurant space is really large - tall warehouse-like ceilings, with a stage and dance floor for patrons who want to party on into the night or sing karaoke. It's a throwback, but still clean and classy. I'd want to come back to sample the hot pots or exotic salads.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 19, 2019
Really impressed with the food and interior of Ta Restaurant. We were a party of 15 and came for a late Sunday lunch to celebrate my niece's birthday. The restaurant is huge with a stage and dance floor. We thought they would be crowded but there was only 1 other table during the entire time we were there. We arrived 30 minutes before our party and ordered so that the food would be ready by the they arrived. However, we should have spoken with the staff to let them know because I don't think they started cooking until our entire party arrived. So, it took a while for food to come out. However, it was worth the wait.
My sister ordered a little bit of everything so that we could eat family style. We started with the green papaya and mango salad (my fave of all the items.) Then we got bun bo hue, chicken noodle soup and beef noodle soup. For main dishes we got the black pepper beef, catfish in claypot, seafood chow mean, tofu with eggplant and bell pepper, manila clams in ginger, lemongrass porkchops, and sesame wings. In general, the food was really good with two exceptions. The porkchops had bits of small bones in meat which you would inadvertently bite into. The seafood chow mein was mostly cabbage and hardly had any seafood.
The ambiance of the restaurant was also surprisingly upscale. You can't really tell from the outside, but the inside is gorgeous. It's very spacious and seemed geared for large parties. We spoke with the manager to inquire about future events. They were very pleasant and answered all our questions.
Service during our meal was okay. There was only one person who assisted our party. We often had to ask for extra plates and bowls while they were bringing out the food, but once all the food was out, service was better.
All in all, it was a positive first experience and we'll be back for future family events.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kaye T.Milpitas, CA123134335Jun 27, 2019
Ta Restaurant use to be my family's go to restaurant a few years back. We use to be so regular that the same two waitresses knew our order and was always greeted with such delight. I would've gave them a five stars, if they gave me the same experience as before so I feel bad I never Yelped them earlier. I seriously hope they go back to serving their dishes a lot cheaper, with the combo A and B. They told us that menu was no longer avail for a while. We were embarrassed to think high quality food for a bargain would last. Oh well!
We came here on Mother's Day with our family and friends. My mom chose this place after a long hiatus. Some of our friends mentioned that there were better Vietnamese restaurant, which I beg to differ. After they had their meal everyone was shocked that they were really good and were surprised by it. I told them they must've gotten confused with another restaurant because they're food has been consistent for the most part. However, the cost wasn't a steal as before, but still beats some competitors. Overall, they have better selection of food, the quality and the price is still competitive and there really is never a wait every time we go here. So, check this place out if you like Vietnamese food. It's a lot more flavorful than their competitors nearby! Bon appetite!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Martine J.Palo Alto, CA1145Oct 15, 2021
This place used to be a Vietnamese Restaurant but Mr Chi Dinh Ta, the 66 yr owner killed 4 of his wife's relatives, and the restaurant changed hands. The decor was black and white and gaudy. They probably rent it out for weddings. It has a stage and a bar and two large rooms.
There did not seem to be anyone in charge, the staff was overworked, 3 servers, 1 barman, and about 100 people inside. Service was very slow, there were about 5 menu choices - all overpriced and greasy carbs, meant for Happy Hour snacks not a dinner menu. I paid $17 for two tacos with canned salsa and charred meat, 2 teaspoons of rice and beans. It was not dinner. Outrageous pricing. Margaritas were $16 each - out of a can, not even salt around the rim or fresh slice of lime! No cutlery, no napkins, no organization for serving or billing or orders. Absolute chaos in the kitchen.
On stage, the loudspeakers blared some ghastly canned music till we became deaf. There was a strobe light placed on the floor of stage that flashed in everyone's face non stop the entire evening - their version of a disco ball. The microphone went on and off during use. The volume of sound was blaringly loud and my nerves were shattered by end of evening.
No one seemed in charge at this restaurant/ venue. You need a spoon, you go get one. You need water, go to the kitchen and ask for a glass. You need volume turned down, go to the DJ guy ask him 3 times, but nothing gets adjusted. It was REALLY LOUD, and we could not talk among friends.
We went there for a Melanin Comedy Club venue held at this restaurant.
The comedians let loose a stream of profanity that was shocking. It was not funny. They insulted women, school teachers, handicapped people in wheelchairs and every second word was an expletive. The use of the N word repeatedly is NOT okay even by Black comedians who said 'We are all N-----s'. This is not an all Black audience and we did not spring from the ghetto. My ears are still hurting and feel abused. One of our group was hiding in the women's restroom escaping this insulting and angry monologue. She could not take it either! We came here to relax and unwind and laugh, not be disrespected, degraded, insulted, and stressed out with the loud volume and strobe lights in our faces all night.
When the star attraction the Indian comedian, Kabir Singh, finally came on after 4 comedians, he was hammered. We had seen him drinking heavily before that. Wow! We paid money to see this alcoholic make a fool of himself on stage? His timing was off, his eyes were glazed, he slurred his words, forgot his punchlines, and was a huge disappointment. After 2 mins, I walked out. Enough is enough. This was an ordeal to be endured not a relaxing evening with friends. I felt robbed and degraded. I feel not only ripped off by this horrible place, but disrespected by having to listen to these profanity laced angry tirades by the other jokers.
I am going to ask for a refund for my comedy club cover charge. And then I am going to post my review EVERYWHERE online. This place is dead. Do not go there! As malevolent as the spirit of the dead owner who shot up his entire wife's family to death because he was jealous of her.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Akituna S.Union City, CA71901932Oct 18, 2018Updated review
We tried some new dishes today. Sweet and sour shrimp soup, egg rolls, veggies spring rolls and crispy combination chow mein. Everything is very good.

La is a wonderful waitress. She knows her customers by their names. She's a funny, she tells us funny jokes make us all laugh. She provides excellent service, very helpful, and check on us often. She's an attentive waitress... We just love her.
These are so many dishes that we like. Here's some of our favorite dishes:

*Salmon rolls
*Grill lemongrass pork chop
*Grill Chicken
*Thai tom yum soup
*Ta salad
*House special fried rice

Sorry for the two stars at least I can give; the restaurant inside was very fancy decoration and also had a huge dance floor for live music on the weekends I guess...
First time I walk in and very surprised how big this place inside.
Anyway the foods had no flavor or any taste at all. The papaya mango salads so plain like I am eating grass like a rabbit..
Not sure if I want to recommend anyone. Maybe next time we come back and try another dish and see..
The services are very nice, friendly but the foods need improvement please..Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jun 9, 2018Previous reviewSorry for the two stars at least I can give..., the restaurant inside was very fancy decoration and also had a huge dance floor for live music on the weekends I guess...

Recently came here for an event for the Milpitas Rotary. I was really impressed with what kind of decor you could do with the space that Ta Restaurant provides. It has a small dance floor, some great booths, and nice front entrance. If you have great decorators, you could really transform the place. My only complaint would be that there's a lot of carpet, and you can see quite a bit of stains here and there on the carpet. Wouldn't look good in pictures.
I came the day after the event in an effort to find these delicious prawns that they served at the event. I was unfortunately told that the prawns had to be ordered in advance--they aren't on the menu. I was so disappointed! The waitress didn't really seem moved by the fact that I was really disappointed..she just wandered away. We ate here at 6 PM on a Sunday night and we were the ONLY ones in the entire restaurant. They must make a lot of their income from special events!
The food we got was pretty good. Steaming hot, fresh, and yummy. The waitress suggested another prawn dish and I thought it would be similar to the one I wanted, but it wasn't. There were 6 of us eating dinner, and the prawn dish the waitress recommended only had 4 prawns in it. That made it awkward for my family as we each kept trying to pass the prawns on to the next person. That was kind of a bummer, since not everyone got to try one.
Other than the slightly funky service and the prawns mishap, this place isn't bad. A little on the pricier side for sure.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Makelina T.Santa Clara, CA08742Jan 5, 2020
We walked in on a Friday night almost 7:00, and there were plenty of tables. Turned out it's because the crowd doesn't come till about 8:30 when the karaoke + dancing happens (how fun). The food was good overall with some interesting dishes, service was polite and helpful, and the restaurant itself was clean and modern. The only thing is it's a bit pricey, but I think it's supposed to be on the fancy side. Here's our order:
Purple yam soup with shrimp - excellent and so pretty with the green cilantro in middle of lavender pond.
Imperial fried rice - delicious with good mix of everything and comes wrapped in scrambled egg pouch.
Sampler platter - the fried egg roll was delicious, and so were the 2 different spring rolls, but the fried shrimp was just ok.
Chicken wings - just ok, the meat was too dry and kinda gamey.
Green beans - interesting with the peanut sauce covering it, but I liked it for the nice crispness of beans.
Garlic fries - just ok, wish we had skipped, but the kids wanted it.
Malaysian curry with chicken - good with different veggies in it, but wish the chicken was more tender.
If I was in the area again, I would go back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Masato T.South San Francisco, CA4217Oct 15, 2019
