About the Business
SUGARFISH embodies the philosophy of celebrated sushi chef Kazunori Nozawa, well-known for his Trust Me-style sushi at Sushi Nozawa, which operated in Studio City from 1985-2012. Nozawa shuns "American-style" extravagant rolls and fusion dishes. Instead he concentrates on the purity of his basic ingredients-- nurturing relationships with the finest fish purveyors across the globe, cutting his fish with an artisan's painstaking care, and even making his own fresh soy sauce and ponzu. To bring Chef Nozawa's legendary food to our guests with quality and efficiency, the SUGARFISH team has made some changes that defy the conventional wisdom about sushi places. Our menu, while always featuring the highest quality items, is greatly simplified. Guests choose from three core menus called Trust Me's, a takeoff from the traditional Japanese omakase. The biggest change is there are no visible sushi chefs behind the sushi bar. By moving our sushi-making to the kitchen, we are set up for maximum quality and efficiency (and not for show).

We finally got to try this place out! This place can get busy and we were lucky to get seated right away. The place is modern and clean and not too big. definitely a place to check out if you are a real sushi lover. Their menu is simple, with sets or a la carte. To make it simple for us, we ordered the TRUST ME set.
Our order cam with Organic edamame, Tuna sashimi, Albacore Sushi, salmon sushi, yellow tail sushi, NZ sea Bream sushi, Hirame sushi, Toro hand roll and blue crab hand roll.
The food is fresh and delicious. You can always ask for more pickled ginger as well. Serving size is small but the flavors and freshness of the fish is worth it. Service is fast and friendly. Definitely a place to come back to.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - G G.Burbank, CA4748187Apr 24, 2024Updated review
Almost 8 years later, and I'm still in LOVE with SugarFish!
Now that we are relegated to coming back to work full time in the office, I've been treating myself to SugarFish whenever I have the chance. They're always so good, and they never disappoint.
I no longer get the Trust Me's, though. I usually order my favorites: Salmon, Albacore Belly, and the Large Scallop. Along with at least one Lobster Hand Roll!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 11, 2016Previous reviewLove.
I was introduced to SugarFish when it first came to DTLA. It has ruined all others in my eyes. I can't order sushi/sashimi/nigiri anywhere else. Sure, the lines are long, but totally worth the wait.

Came on a Sunday around 5 pm and was able to be seated right away. The restaurant started to fill up around 6. I would suggest coming earlier if you want to skip the wait.
The Nozawa Trust Me- 4/5: The items in the set tasted really good for the most part. My favorites were the blue fin otoro and yellowtail. They both really buttery and soft. The albacore was also good. Wasn't that big of a fan of the white fishes as they were more waxy like and the hand rolls were nothing special.
Hokkaido Sea Scallops- 5/5: This was also really buttery and soft. Would recommend trying!
Kampachi- 2/5: Personally just not a fan of the white fishes as stated above. The citrus salt enhanced the flavor of the fish, but it wasn't overpowering.
Pink Lobster- 1/5: This one was my least favorite. It was like a slimy wax texture and had a briny salt taste.
I appreciated that the rice in the rolls were warm and it had a sweet taste.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Cassidy F.San Diego, CA2854741298Mar 11, 20241 check-in
I have and will always love Sugarfish. This was my first time at this location and I loved my experience. We came in around 3:15ish on a weekday and it was still lunch time!
Me and my friend both ordered the nozawa trust me. Everything came out promptly. If you've ever been to Sugarfish, you know that the food doesn't come out at the same time, at least for the set menus. However, the server and chefs was really fast and we were served our next dishes as soon as we were done with the previous. Everything was super fresh and delicious!
Only con here is parking. We parked at the Bloc but Sugarfish is not in the Bloc. We were able to get our parking validated in another store that was actually in the Bloc so you could definitely park there if you are planning on going to the Bloc. There is street parking available as well.
Overall, I'm not sure if I'll be back to this location just due to the parking, but I definitely would be back to Sugarfish as soon as possible!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 19, 2024
Sugarfish is an upper scale sushi restaurant located in DTLA. They are walk-in only and can get busy on nights on the weekends. They have a restroom available and street parking. The restaurant is slightly luxurious with a blue vibe throughout. The restaurant is nice for a night out with friends. The service was good; our plates came out quickly and were taken away once finished. They also accommodate for allergies which is great. Overall, the service and ambiance was good.
Food
We ordered the Trust Me for $35. For the price, the portion definitely won't fill you up but is good if you're looking to try something else. The fish had great quality and the pieces were pretty big. The rice was warm but a bit hard to manage at times. The sauces were great with the fish. The handrolls weren't too special. Overall, Sugarfish is a great place to try out for a pricier night out.

I ordered online for to go, and it was ready within 15 minutes. I got the "to -go trust me" which is actually $5 more than the listed dine in price, yet lacks the yellowtail hand roll. They did not, however, omit the 16% mandatory service fee/tip.
My comments on the sushi box. The Nigri was 10 out of 10 absolutely delicious. I absolutely loved the presentation and all the the little dipping sauces/accouterments. So fresh, tender and flavorful. It's truly a girl dinner for the ages.
I did not like either of the rolls. The one on the bottom, the crab roll, was suspect as far as mayo goes. On my first bite crunched down on crab shell, and although it shows it's real crab, hearing and feeling that crack in my mouth made my skin crawl. The other roll on the top was just meh, it didn't taste super fresh like the spectacular nigiri. I did not eat more than one piece of each roll, and wouldn't order it again.
I would 100% return with a couple tweaks to my order. They have a box that comes with no rolls ("No Roll Trust Me") and next time I would get that or choose an assortment of nigiri.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 127285671Jan 4, 2024
I've heard so many great things about this place, and finally decided to give it a try with some friends! the night before, we all had omakase for dinner at a spot out in OC & after trying sugar fish, I definitely enjoyed sugarfish more! their rice was soft and buttery, and the fish pretty much melts in your mouth. Most of us got the trust me lunch, and we were pretty filled after. i highly recommend giving sugarfish a try!
one of my friends ordered the trust me LITE, but we think our server must have misheard and thought she wanted the trust me set. didn't realize it till the last fish came out and we checked the bill to see that she was also charged for a trust me lite.
*they are a no tipping establishment, but a 16% fee is added to the bill*

I have a confession to make: I've become a Sugarfish addict. Every time I'm in LA, I have to order from Sugarfish at least once a week. I constantly crave it and am always telling friends to check it out.
The other day I realized that I only gave Sugarfish 4 stars in 2021...I was clearly OUT OF MY MIND! If you want delicious, fresh fish that is always consistent, and actually works great as to go food, look no further! You definitely can't get better quality sushi at this price (and let's be real, the sushi here is better than tons of places that cost way more).
Sugarfish, I'm so sorry it took me until now to rectify my mistake. Hopefully you can forgive me. I'll be back soon!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jul 20, 2021Previous reviewSugarfish is an institution. It's the place my LA friends eat at when they want to treat themselves, but not go totally crazy. It's everyone's go to dinner takeout spot when their company is picking up the tab. And it's the place I finally got to visit on Tuesday for dinner.
Came here around 8 PM with 4 of my coworkers. We joined the waitlist online (SO CONVENIENT) and our table was ready in 5 minutes which was awesome. We were quickly seated and brought menus. I decided to try the Nozawa Trust Me. It was tasty!!! They did a good job pacing everything and all the fish was yummy! The crab handroll was a great finish. It's not the best sushi I've ever had but for the price and quality of fish, it's pretty solid. Service is super friendly and helpful as well. Would definitely come back! - Mar 7, 2024
Famously no reservations, so we waited a long time for a table for 4. I wish they took down your phone number to text you when your table was ready.
Trust Me menu was great. Sea bream was a dream! That was the standout for me. Hand rolls were unexpectedly delicious; I've never ordered one before.
Space feels a bit industrial, and I wish there was a better waiting area. Service was phenomenalHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 12356140Feb 10, 2024
our favorite sushi place hands down!!!
we truly haven't been able to eat sushi the same since sugarfish entered our lives lol. sugarfish's menu is just so elite and also not nearly as expensive as some other omakase-style options. it's casual yet elevated vibes is just *chefs kiss*. we came on a wednesday for lunch around 1-1:30pm and there was no wait!
every time we can't help but get the Don't Think Just Eat. the selection of fish is great, the quality is always top tier, and it's just such a delight!!! my absolute favorites are the otoro, chutoro, and the albacore. those three fish truly saved my life with how delicious they are and how they quite literally MELT in your mouth like butter. i think this menu is 10000% worth my, especially if it's your first time here and you have an appetite.
at this specific location, parking is a nightmare. in the heart of DTLA, you have to get lucky with street parking. i'm sure there are parking garages somewhere nearby, but i don't wanna pay those prices lol. service was great here, Alexa was a great server!! and overall the experience was very good. can't wait for our next sugarfish adventure!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Nov 4, 2023
We were still hungry after Kazu Nori so we walked through tons of dirt and grime in DTLA and came here for the trust me light.
Our waitress is nice and friendly! Inside is cool and hip and it's definitely not crowded!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 11Oh no 0
