Q:
Tables or take out only?
A:
There are several tables -- we dined in (party of four). You order at the counter and they bring the food out when it's ready. We also ordered take away for later.

Although I have reviewed subculture previously, alas, here I am again with a proper review.
I love everything about this restaurant; the food, desserts, deli case and staff are all phenomenal. I order from here at least twice a week & have proudly tried everything on the menu over the last few years. There isn't a single thing on the menu that I wouldn't recommend. From the sandwiches that are enough to feed two persons to the elite house made ranch- literally everything is good.
Vegan or not, this is arguably some of the best food that the 518 has to offer. I have ordered pans of mac n' cheese for several holidays, and my carnivore family never fails to finish every last noodle, and each time- they make the same remark, that being "holy shit- I can't believe this is vegan!"
Coming to subculture is often the highlight of my week. The staff make me feel like family.
Show these folks some love. They are the utmost deserving of your business!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1Mar 3, 2023Previous reviewI ordered the seitan wings garlic parm style- absolutely DELICIOUS. Subculture keeps me afloat

Traveling with my adult children who are vegan means seeking out vegan restaurants wherever we go. This week we visited Albany and the Subculture Deli was our destination for lunch.
I'm an omnivore but I appreciate good vegan food (and I frequently cook vegan meals for myself). The Reuben sandwich I ordered at Subculture was top notch. A pile of properly seasoned, thinly sliced seitan, a generous heap of sauerkraut, a dollop of "Russian" dressing, and, much to my delight, the best vegan "Swiss cheese" I've ever had. The cheese was gooey and stringy, just like one would expect on a non-vegan sandwich.
The rest of my family was equally impressed with their food. I liked the idea behind my son's "Oyster Po'Boy," made with breaded, fried, oyster mushrooms. He reports that it was very good.
If one is vegan, Subculture Deli is a must stop. If not, I'd still recommend their food and think you'll enjoy it like I did.

I was so sad when Berben & Wolff's closed its doors on Lark Street a couple of years ago. It served the best vegan Reuben sandwiches.
I was aware that another vegan eatery moved into the same space. It's taken me awhile. Today, I finally gave Subculture Vegan Deli & Provisions a try. When I called up to place a takeout order, I was assured the Reuben would taste the same. I found out later that's because Joey Berben is still chef and partner.
Well, it was a great Reuben and it did taste the same if not better because I haven't had one in so long. Based on reviews, I also got a mac n cheese with Buffalo soy curls. Something I've never tried before. My husband, who's a mac n cheese maniac, sampled both meals and declared them to be "very good."
Just a heads up on the volume of food. These meals are filling. I used to be able to finish a Reuben. I ate a quarter of a Reuben and a quarter of the mac n cheese. Now I'm stuffed and I have plenty of great leftovers!Next time, perhaps we'll dine in instead of getting takeout. The staff is nice and so is the restaurant decor.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 30, 2023
Been coming here for many years and it's always good. But I don't know what's up!!! Every since they changed their menu and added more stuff it's even better than it was??? Slightly toasting the sub rolls now??? Amazing. Can't wait to try more of the new menu

So I'll set the scene first. My oldest son is a freshman in college and my wife and I picked him up for his thanksgiving trip home from the city at the Rensselaer train station. He's a vegetarian and is passionate about it so I try to be supportive when I can. So I searched on Yelp vegetarian spots. This place popped up and had good reviews.
I ordered directly from Yelp through Grubhub and everything went super well and smooth. We got there a bit early but the food was ready. The young lady at the counter was friendly, and all of our food was in the bag. The place looked super clean, nice decor, and very well decorated. The bathroom was clean too
So on to the food. I order my wife an impossible Big Mac basically. Impossible patty, lettuce, pickles, onions, special sauce and sesame seed bun. She liked it and ate the whole thing. She also said that she was full so the portion size was good. I had the pastrami Rueben which was really good and it was giant. I'm 6'7" and 300 lbs and eat large portions and this actually over stuffed me. My son had a Buffalo chicken and Mac and cheese wrap. It was wrapped in a flattened quesadilla but tucked in manner and grilled crispy on the outside. It too was a good size and got good reviews from the kid.
Everything was served with chips and pickle. Everything was really well done. Service was on point the place was clean. Plant based is a huge trend and they do it really well here. I would definitely recommend this place and will be going back!
Sorry no pics I was so excited my son was home I lost track of that!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Duke S.Oradell, NJ436146Apr 22, 2023
We were going upstate to celebrate our sons birthday and partake on Easter Sunday. He looked for a vegan restaurant which was our request and hit the jackpot with finding Subculture. All vegan meals and comfort food. Plus the dishes are very tasty. Strongly recommended and we cannot wait to visit on our next hike to Troy NY! Kudos to the owner Joey who did a great job anexcellent service and very personable!

Love this place! I make a point to stop here every time I'm upstate because it's that good. The menu is 100% vegan and they have a large selection of sandwiches and deli options, like homemade meats and cheeses, cold pasta salads, and baked goods. Everything I've tried has been great, but the mushroom po boy and reuben sandwich are probably my favorites. Definitely check out their Instagram to see their specials, because they always have something new. Even my non-vegan family loves this spot!

I say Oh Boyyyy everytime I taste a PoBoy sandwich. A must try. They also have delicious treats. It sucks the Troy location isn't open any more. The Troy location sold the best French fries I ever had. Hopefully this location starts selling them.

Pricey
Had the chili cheese dog, which was great, good balance of flavors, and a side salad, which was a disappointment. The salad was a pinch of greens and no dressing. The store itself is nice, clean charming, somewhat hipster. I might go back; definitely won't frequent because for a $16 lunch I was left still quite hungry.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
