This place is delicious. Food is good, people are friendly and quick. Only downside there isn't a place to eat there so if you are looking for that I wouldn't recommend this place.

This restaurant has a fairly standard and basic Mexican food menu, and it's cheap compared to most places, therefore worth a try.
We are vegetarian, so our options were limited. We had a chili relleno burrito, which was underwhelming even with guacamole added. Thick egg batter and bland. Their veggie burrito is fine, but not great. Something in it tasted bitter. We also got an order of chips & salsa. The chips were standard fare, the salsa bland.
I think meat eaters probably have better luck here as that would boost the flavor.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 13, 2023
First and foremost, if you walk in here expecting a small table to eat your food -- do NOT -- it is take out/grab and go. There are seats to wait for your pick up order and that is it.
We finally made it here on a recommendation from a friend (and will definitely go back to get more take out). I ordered the Chilaquiles bowl and my hubs ordered the Chile Rellejano burrito, we also threw in a side of Calabasitas. This place is super popular, and there was a steady stream of people coming in and out. I wanted to order a bunch of stuff to take home but controlled myself until I could try their food for the first time. The team behind the counter is incredibly friendly and warm as well, you get the vibe you are just walking up to someone's kitchen and ordering a bunch of food to go.
Okay, so my husband loved his burrito. They put some beans in it for him at his request. FINALLY, after the last few places that I ordered Chilaquiles St Mary's made them correctly with the corn tortillas lightly precooked (etc.) and they were delicious. We will be back, ordering other things to try as the red chile looks wonderful as does the chimi's.

I live in Los Angeles but Tucson is my home. I was born at St. Mary's (the hospital, not the restaurant ). My grandmother used to have these neighbors, the McKenna's. The grandmother used to go outside and make tortillas on a 50 gallon drum with a metal top. They were the best tortillas I had ever had. As it turns out, there were a few places in Tucson that made these tortillas. The one's I went to both closed down, which is sad. Then, I found out about St. Mary's. I used to go there every time I came to Tucson to visit my mom and take home a few dozen tortillas.
We came here to see my mom on her 90th birthday. My son has been craving St. Mary's tortillas so we decided to go there early. We also decided to get a breakfast burrito. We ordered chorizo burritos and a breakfast burrito for my sons girlfriend. He had actually stopped by yesterday to get some tortillas and they only had the medium so I thought we could get some large ones in the morning. This morning, they only had medium and it looked like the stack that was there yesterday. I ordered a dozen. Right when our food came, they took all the mediums off the shelf. Our server had to grab one since we ordered one.
When we got home, I opened the foil off my burrito and took a big bite. To my surprise, it was a chorizo burrito, but it was just chorizo, no eggs. I love chorizo but not enough to eat a block of it in a tortilla. I looked at the menu again online to make sure I didn't screw up. There it was, chorizo with eggs and either beans or potatoes. It felt like things were different when we were there this morning and now I am convinced something has changed. They seemed very rushed and they ran out of tortillas right off the bat. We were the 10th in line and they not only did not have large tortillas, they only had the medium ones left from yesterday and they took all of those to make the burritos. The last time I got a burrito at St. Mary's they used the large tortillas.
I hope, for their sake, this is just something that is temporary. But, for tortillas, I guess I will have to go to La Mesa and maybe get some tamales too. It's sad to see a good place not do too good. If this was any other restaurant, I would have given them 1 star. I gave them 3 because in the past, they were on top of things. I hope you guys get some help or whatever it is you need there to get back on track.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lorraine M.Tucson, AZ22358Mar 14, 2024
The food is delicious. This is a neighborhood mom and pop place and their flavors are superior to most in this very competitive Mexican food neighborhood. Service may be low during rush hours but certainly worth the time! They even serve tres leches!

A friend told me to check out this place and I had high hopes. First I'll talk about the food the prices were good my husband and I got a meal and I ordered a side of chips and a birria taco it came to about $20 no complaints there. The only thing is that I got a regular taco and not birria. The beans and rice were good. I was looking forward to my tamale and dare I say the tamale was just ok. The shredded beef was ok but needed more seasoning and the other stuff we got was ok. The hibiscus drink was watered down . The chips and salsa tasted like it was packaged and not homemade. I really wanted to love it but we didn't finish our food. The service was GREAT the ladies behind the counter were polite and my food came pretty quick considering the line of people inside. That earned them the 3stars!!! The ambiance is basic they did have some cool paintings inside and seating for those who were waiting. I really wanted to give this place a higher rating but I've had more flavorful Mexican food in Tucson.

Another Tucson hidden gem. IDK how hidden it is, but damn it's delicious...I had the red beef chili burro plate and it was so good. The beans were sooo good. I also got a cheese quesadilla with guac and sourcream, and imo the guac is way to lime tasting....but some people love it like that. The service was walk up and order, then wait for your # to be called. Chairs to sit in are there to wait. Very very minimal inside. Not a lot of decor and no tables. The food though. Go for the food. Yum. Authentic tasting tortillas which they make fresh here everyday!

We picked up food from here at 2:00 pm on 12/23/22. They were out of large tortillas and tamales, so go earlier! You order at the counter, then wait for your number to be called. There were some chairs for waiting, but none for eating inside. We ate on the hood of our car.
I got the 3 Scrambled Eggs Burro with Beans ($4.25) and Birria Taco ($2.25). Given the price, we were expecting the burros to be really small, but it was actually a lot of food and very filling! I definitely didn't need the birria taco, but am glad I tried it. The burro didn't have much taste by itself. The salsa or hot sauce that we put on it helped.
According to others' reviews, we messed up by not trying the Red Chile Burro. We'll have to next time! Decent food for super good prices!
