The best manju in town; it's pure perfection! Always so fresh, soft, and chewy mochi.
Definitely arrive in the early morning or preorder otherwise most flavors will be sold out by noon!

Just like the rest of Japantown, we don't get down here often enough. It was disappointing to see so many shops closed for the day. So many Manju shops have disappeared. The only ones left that we're aware of and go to are Shuei Do and Osaka-ya in Sacramento. Yes, there are some Japanese grocery stores and bakeries that might stock Manju and Mochi but we like buying from the source when we can. We hope to see them open and well the next time we drive down.
note: I apologize to anyone who got the impression that Shuei Do is permanently closed. They are operating with shorter hours and many of the Japantown businesses appear to also be open less days to save on labor costs. They may have been taking a post-New Year rest the day we were there. Next time, I'll take pictures of the signs.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dec 18, 2023
AMAZING mochi in SJ - for a great price too! We came around on a weekend around lunchtime. We ordered at their window and our mochis came out a few moments later.
I tried the green tea and the chi chi dango (strawberry) mochis. The mochi was SO soft and had the perfect chewiness. My fav of the two was the green tea because I really liked how fragrant the green tea flavor was and how the azuki bean wasn't too sweet.
You can also find Shuei-Do Manju at a couple of grocery stores around the Bay Area!

I love the authentic manju (glutinous rice confection) here. There is no better in the USA. Store hours very limited and once the goods are sold out each day then the store closes. Orders were taken in one line, and another line to pick up. Used to be able to go inside the store, so this is a little different. I haven't been here in over 10 years. I ordered 2 gift boxes for work colleagues and one big box for the family. At $2.50 a piece, it's not cheap.

Whenever I'm back in San Jo I make it a point to stop in. You just can't get this anywhere else, except perhaps in Japan. At $2 a pop they aren't cheap. When the store runs out of inventory the doors close. Monday and Tuesday doors are also closed.

The best mochi ever!! Lots of different flavors to choose from - my favorites are the kinako, pink white bean, and peanut butter ones. The mochi is always made fresh and it's super soft and chewy, and the filling isn't cloyingly sweet either. Service was efficient and friendly and I'll definitely pay another visit soon.

As a Japanese girl, mochi's practically it's own food group for me. It's difficult to find affordable mochi and manjus in the Bay Area--but in my opinion, this is the closest you can find to authenticity in the Bay Area.
The shop isn't anything special--old school, small, and take-out only. The menu is standard with several varieties of manju and mochi. You can order per piece or in a set either in person at the window or by calling in your order. The ladies do a great job with turnaround since it can get busy. Our order was swiftly packed, my name was called, and we enjoyed nibbling on the go.
My companion and I wanted to get there early so they wouldn't sell out. We ordered a Six Piece Tray Size: Green Tea, Pink White, Pink Tsubu, Brown Inaka, White Manju, and Peanut Butter. I appreciated the variety they sold for fillings as I love both lima and azuki bean. The Pink White and Green Tea were my favorites because the filling was smoother instead of chunky--personal preference. The mochi itself was fresh and pillowy soft while the manju was baked and dense.
For fans of mochi and manju in the Bay Area, Shuei-Do Manju Shop is your best bet. Their specialty treats will surely fill you with happiness like they did to me. It's affordable, quality-made, and efficient. Their location off of Jackson Street is metered parking only.

Shuei-Do makes the best manju (mochi). They taste freshly made. The skins are soft and chewy. The centers are flavorful.
When you get there, look at the posted menu, walk up to the window and give them your order. I recommend ordering a few Habutai. I also like Peanut Butter. Once you've completed ordering and paying, it's a short wait while they box up the manju.
Expert tips:
1) Call ahead to order if possible. If not possible, go early and/or on a weekday.
2) They sell out of some flavors by midday.
3) The manju are big and will last a couple days if stored in the provided plastic wrap. Order accordingly.

Read about this spot in SJ Mercury maybe 1-2 yrs ago and bookmarked it. Finally got chance to stop by and try their famous manju (mochi)!
Arrived around 2pm Sat, a couple folks in line, a couple items sold out already. Treated myself to a 6 pk (with special guava and butter mochi) $13.75 with tax. Cashier gal said it'll be 30 minute wait for the green tea one (guess they make it fresh until run out?). Walked around the tiny Japantown strip and checked out local shops while waited.
Texture soft and pillowy, smooth fillings (azuki, peanut butter, not overly sweet. Can taste the rice grains in butter mochi (different from denser Third Culture one). Sign says can keep 2-3 days. Would be back if in the area :)

After years of coming to Japantown, we finally decided to try Shuei-Do. There was a line, but it went quickly. You place your order at the window, then wait for your name to be called.
We tried green tea, monaka and peanut butter (which I thought was the best out of the three). The green tea could've have more green tea flavor in it. I enjoyed the wafer shell of the monaka. I'll definitely come back to try other their other flavors.

Not the best Mochi I've ever eaten but it's not bad.
Very aesthetic mochi and we ordered one of everything but I personally thought the mochi flavors all tasted similar and wasn't anything special.
