Usually when you hire a contractor, you hope and pray that they will complete the job according to specs and do it with respect and care. Not only did Shovel Kings complete our job and fulfill our vision, their work completely exceeded all expectations. Also, the modifications they suggested opened our eyes to unimaginable possibilities! While they weren't the cheapest quote that we got, we are thrilled with the results and know they will stand behind their work. This is by far the largest job we've ever contracted and we were very nervous. I am happy to report this is the first large job where we received good value for our investment and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They were wonderful to work with and addressed all of our questions and concerns with old school honor and respect. Well done, Jordan family!

I would leave more than 5 stars if I could! This company is amazing, great management and employees. I managed to get a 30 foot class a motorhome stuck in soft wet dirt in a location with very limited access. I really didn't know what to do. Shovel Kings had a look, said no problem. They gave a very reasonable quote and pulled it out the next day!

We are an industrial/commercial masonry/general contracting company who is based out of Hampton Roads - but frequently do travel up and down the east coast. We have conducted masonry business regionally and locally for five generations and counting. We take maximum pride in our work. It is common for us to estimate and perform 100+ union and non union, government, civil, and private owner contracts annually. Most of our contracts are extremely technical and custom from ground floor to extreme heights. We normally do in house excavation, rebar tying, grouting, paving, concrete pumping/finishing, and crane operation. There are times when our labor force cannot keep up with our current contract load and we do need help with these particular tasks. Shovel Kings completed a job at a duplex home of ours in a timely manner. We appreciate that they made our job a priority after we explained that we planned to put the home on the market for sale as soon as a tenant moved out and that we had been unable to find a company who could complete the job within a month. However, we were very uncomfortable with their business etiquette. Initially, I was told that we would be required to pay 2/3 of the cost prior to the job starting and that it would cost $2,500. Shortly after, we were told that they could only start the job with 100% down payment at that the new cost was over $5,000. We understand that prices change after measurements are taken, but we have never had a contractor require 100% down payment prior to a project beginning. The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation headquarters in Richmond said they strongly recommend that I not comply with this request; they sen consumer protection literature which states: "Don't pay 100% of the bill until the work is 100% complete... an initial down payment should be no more than 30% of the total value of the contract." I spoke with my point of contact-- Christian-- at length about this only to have him become increasingly more defensive of their stance... at one point, consistently talking over me in a conversation, until I had no choice to sit on the phone and listen to him speak, which sure felt like a move out of a misogynistic playbook. Due to time constraints that made them the only business able to work within our month timeframe, I had to make a very anxiety-producing decision: I paid for the job in full over a week before the work had begun. Ironically, the day after making the payment, Christian communicated that, after having spoken to their business attorney, they would accept a partial down payment. Despite the job being completed in a timely manner, this contractor sure caused several sleepless nights.
