5/23/2020I just bought a car from Shift during the pandemic. It's not a perfect experience, but it's still a much much better experience than going through a dealership.
Employees are friendly, respectful, and professional. They all follow social distancing protocols and are easy to talk to. Test drives were smooth, and they were flexible about me wanting to test drive cars back to back if I came to their lot in south SF. Purchasing and delivery was smooth as well. The employees are really what makes the experience here.
Downsides? Communication before scheduling test drives is hot garbage, but maybe they're swamped this time of the year. Don't expect them to get back to you. Also, as much as they boast not being sale-sy, there's one guy who coordinates your logistics that's assigned to you that may come off a bit aggressive (not the test drive guys). Also, don't trust their PPI and pay the extra fee for an inspection. Lastly, they try to really push warranty sale since that's how they make money, which is a bit eh.
Cost is relatively fair, but I wouldn't call it a steal. Especially after $1000 dealership fee, it starts adding up, so you should still shop around. Also, the vehicle had no issues so far, so I can't comment on any post-sale experience, but will update if anything comes up (hopefully nothing does).

6/18/2020I am not a car person and hate having to deal with most car dealers. Nicco made it very easy for me, he was very engaging and patient.
Because of Covid-19 every car is sanitized and only one driving reservation can be held each day. I appreciate that Shift is thinking of their customers' safety. I purchased a FIAT I'm not sure if it is right for me but I have 7 days to make that decision.

The entire process, from selecting through purchasing and financing the car, was great. Also kudos to Shift for easing any concerns about buying a car during the pandemic. 7/6/20205 stars for the service from my rep, Jenny! She drove the Subaru Outback I was interested in straight to my house, where I was able to do a no-contact test drive with my family and handle all the paperwork. She arrived fully gloved and masked. This was such a contrasting experience from going to dealerships. Jenny was so extremely helpful, patient, and placed zero pressure on me. She also had so much knowledge about Subarus from her past work experience and was able to answer many of my questions. She made my experience extremely humanizing.
The rest of the communication is handled via Shift's communication platforms (they relay info back n forth, you speak with agents on the phone to complete transactions) so there is some down time. Shift does charge a $1,250 service fee for the purchase of the vehicle. If you factor that into the OTD when you are looking for listings, you can account for that increase and not be surprised. Personally I think this is a huge service fee, and there's no real negotiating (however I don't have a reference point for dealership markups). Even though this is a huge increase, the OTD price still ended up being a fair market price for the exact model/year/mileage I was looking for so I went through with it.
The overall experience was much more enjoyable than going to dealerships. I just bought the car yesterday, so if anything goes wrong with my vehicle after owning it for some time, I'll update my review. - John B.San Francisco, CA0 friends68 reviews33 photos

6/24/2020Smooth experience end to end! Loved that the price I saw online was the price I paid -- no surprises and no negotiation. Shift showed up right to my door and allowed me to test drive without any sales pressure. My concierge, Alexis, was super attentive to address our questions. My partner and I were able to discuss the pros and cons as we drove and ultimately decided it was the one!
From there, it was almost too easy... A few forms to sign and we were set. Shift handles all the DMV work, offered a great financing rate, and made car buying feel like a modern transaction.

5/25/2020BUYER BEWARE!!! In order to buy a car from Shift you apparently have to pay shift $1250 for them selling you a vehicle... Yea read that again... and the explanation they give you about a "white glove service" is an insult to my intelligence. They don't negotiate pricing AND sneak in an extra $1250 on top of it!! We are all going through a pandemic and Shift still finds a way to rip you off

The fees associated with our vehicles are listed clearly on our website. Every dealership will have fees included into the sale of a vehicle. Here at Shift, we offer a breakdown of those fees and include an explanation of what those fees cover. The service fee will vary depending on the vehicle and is nonnegotiable. We hope you understand everyone, including us, are affected by the pandemic--which is why we extended our return period from 5 days to 7 days and started offering no-contact test drives. We do not charge our customers for these appointments and have lower priced vehicles if you are still in the market for one. 7/6/2020My wife and I purchased a great, used Mini from Shift. It was a very pleasant and easy experience. While I usually enjoy negotiating, the transparent pricing made it very low stress. The pictures were accurate and we were able to make an appointment the same day. Elisa Camacho delivered the car to us, and she went above and beyond!! We have a very tight parking space and Elisa went above and beyond to show us how to easily park. She showed up early, answered all of our questions, and was an absolute pleasure to work with. Not only was she knowledgeable about cars, she provided empathetic customer service with a smile. While Shift is still working out a few kinks, I had a great experience. Elisa made it a 5 star experience. Highly recommend Shift to anyone looking to buy a car and tons of appreciation and kudos to Elisa for making our first car buying experience a memorable one!

5/15/2020I am unbelievably happy with Shift! This is such a precarious time to purchase a car but Shift made it super easy. Cameron came to my house with my dream car (sporty, low miles, well maintained, great gas mileage, and under 10,500) and I took it for a test run.
I fell in love with the car but I was short the 20% down payment and Shift made it happen! I started off with 9% (I have not the best credit) and Shift got me 10% with less than half the down payment!!

6/14/2020Shift was a great way to buy a car: very convenient, safe, easy, and friendly. The sanitized car was brought directly to our house for a test drive. We could examine the car and take it on a 20 minute test drive. We decided to buy the car and filled the paperwork and transferred the money in less than an hour. It was so easy!
The car has a 7 day return policy (which we won't use since we are very happy with the car) and was in great condition after a very thorough pre-inspection and replacement of some parts. No work at all needed on a used car and total peace of mind.
Shift also purchases cars and takes trade-ins, which we are thinking about trying. Very good chance we will buy our next car from Shift. No sales people, no credit checks (if you are buying in cash, which we did), and no need to leave your house. Such a good experience!

After I explained to him all the details, this was the last response:

I would be happy to discuss a reimbursement of the brake pads if you could provide a diagnosis to show they were installed incorrectly. What you provided me does not mention a diagnosis of incorrectly installed brake pads. I agree Shift could be responsible for the repairs if that is the case and would argue on your behalf. I hope this is something you can provide and look forward to hearing from you.

I gave him the contact number for the shop who diagnosed and fixed my car. There was no response. I tried to follow up with it twice, and no response still. This was on June 3rd. It has been almost a month now.
How is customer support going to tell me they will be happy to discuss a reimbursement for brake pads that they incorrectly and carelessly installed in my car and then just ghost me? Absolutely unacceptable.
5/28/2020Previous reviewI'm writing this review about 11 months after purchasing a vehicle from shift.
Initially, the priced seemed pretty good for a 2012 STI for the condition I received it in. When inspecting everything with the vehicle, I opened the middle console and noticed it didn't "click" and close all the way. They told me everything was in perfect condition with it but chose to not disclose this information. Instead of offering to fix it for me, they offered they offered a $50 discount and gave me advice on how to fix it myself. I would have appreciated for them to fix it and give it in the condition they said it would be in, but it wasn't the biggest deal/ didn't deter me from buying it.
When taking it for a test drive, I realized the brakes were screeching REALLY loudly. We were told that they were high performance brake pads that they had just installed themselves, so they needed to be worn in. I understood that. This screeching noise went on for months and months and did not get better. I would try to ignore it but passengers in my car would point it out all the time, I would get looks from people at stoplights because the noise was that disturbing.
So after getting 3 different opinions from car specialists, they all agreed that not only were they actually cheap brake pads that were installed, but the one who fixed it for me said they were not installed correctly. "It did not look like they bothered to cut and resurface the rotors, or even use lube to dampen the unwanted noise. It appeared they used the old hardware instead of taking the time to install new mounting hardware."
I finally got it fixed which costed a pretty penny and now everything is sounding perfect. However I am very upset I purchased from this company which was too careless to ensure that my vehicle was properly serviced before selling it to me. 5/30/2020You could not ask for a more smoother transaction, bing bam boom it was done and I was on my way in my new Jaguar. Marcelena and Gabe went above and beyond to get me in and out with the best deal. The atmosphere was clean and protection was worn at all times making for the least contact.

3/7/2020Recently brought in my car for an apraisal. Staff was friendly at first but shortly after handing over the keys they walked in and told me my car was ineligible because of "structural frame damage." They tossed me the keys and when I walked out, the car was still running, engine hood open and all the doors wide open.
I'm not as upset that the decided to decline my car (CarMax and Carvana both offered me full value, was just shopping for the best trade in offer.) as I was that they wouldn't tell me what exactly made them suspect there was frame damage and they didn't even have the courtesy to put my car back together. 7/6/2020It was easy to buy a used car from Shift, they took care of everything including the paperwork. The price was good as well. We purchased a "value" car so it didn't come wit a 30-days warranty but we still had some time (7 days?) to return it should something go wrong. We took the car to an independent service center to check it's technical condition as we heard a couple of weird sounds and they found an issue not listed by Shift. Shift customer support was great, they took the car back to repair and provided us with a rental car for the period so no complaints about that. Overall would recommend but worth checking the condition is as described.

7/6/2020I dealt with Shift to sell my Prius after I found them on line. They were excellent to work with and lived up to all commitments. Amaris, the concierge, who inspected and evaluated my vehicle was competent, on time, very pleasant to deal with and refreshingly straightforward. After often unpleasant and off putting interactions with car dealerships, this was the best possible experience. If you are looking to get a fair price when you sell your car, Shift would be the right choice. Tyler was my contact on the phone and he was equally enjoyable to work with.

At the last minute after i get everything ready for them i received a call from one of the manager saying that sorry we are not interested to provide valuation for your car with out any sound reason or inspecting the car. 6/23/2020Meh. I purchased a new car from a different geographic region and wanted a quick and painless local sale. I saw and ad for Shift as I googled carmax to see their hours, and thought I would give them a try. Long story short, the Shift offer was about 20% less than what Carmax gave me for my car. I'm sorry, but that is a significant and huge delta. I thus cancelled my in-person Shift pickup, which was easy and hassle free to do. Moral of story: If you are looking to sell your car to shift, do yourself a favor and have Carmax appraise it as well. You may be surprised.

5/20/2020We had a wonderful experience with Shift. We decided to try Shift out earlier this week and scheduling our appointment couldn't have been easier. The car showed up on time and we were able to go on the test drive right away. We decided to go ahead and buy the car and everything went very smoothly.
The employee that we worked with, David, was extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. He was also respectful given the crazy pandemic we are going through - he never took off his mask or his gloves. He explained every part of the process and walked us through everything we needed to do regarding financing and our insurance. He was also just a pleasant guy to hang out with throughout the inevitable waiting periods between document-signing.

5/4/2020I don't like to write reviews unless they're positive, but I feel like sharing my expensive experience with Shift.com.
I bought a used 2009 VW Jetta from them on Aug 26, 2018, but I already had a check engine light by Oct 28, 2018. It had barely been two months and I only used it to drive to/from work on the weekdays (8 miles either way)... But, it's in used condition and I understand that it happens. I scheduled an appointment with my local VW Dealership for service. I thought because I purchased the optional warranty that whatever it was would be covered. It wasn't.
A diagnosis showed that the coolant was tarnished and dirty, and the head gasket was defective/faulty. The car thankfully never overheated, but it would "skip" whenever I applied the gas and I still had the check engine light on. AUL Insurance (the optional insurance) would not cover anything until I paid out-of-pocket for the VW Service team to deconstruct the hood of the car so that they could have their own rep go down and accept/deny the claim.
Long story short, the claim was denied and I was out about $3,000 for a diagnosis alone - the root issue had not been fixed.
On their website, they have "150+ point inspection...", "Inspected and guaranteed", but even if that were the case, they didn't check the head gasket well enough and it cost me a lot of money. I also doubt I drove this car enough where, after 2 months, the coolant would be black and the head gasket would be failing.
If you buy from Shift.com, make sure to do your own inspection of the car (as best as possible...). Based on my own experience, I don't believe they inspect their vehicles adequately.
5/15/2020 Edit: I was given a $300 refund after lots of back/forth calls and emails. It still cost me $2700 out of pocket, and I also had to pay someone to take me to/from work for 2 weeks. Altogether, the refund didn't make much of a dent, and overall I still don't believe the purchase from Shift.com was worth the hassle.
I stand by my recommendation that you should do an additional inspection of your car and not trust their "150+ point inspection" claim outright.

I know this is 2 years after the fact but, are you still in need of assistance with your vehicle? Also, you are correct that our vehicles are inspected and guaranteed but even then, we offer customers a 7-day return period to allow them to really get a feel for the car and have it inspected to ensure it is up to their standards.

6/23/2020No haggle? Maybe. Fishing scam instead. I test drove a car two days ago. Today I inquired about whether or not the car was still available and found out the price had been increased by $1000. They would not honor the price at time of test drive and gave no reason as to why. I would have bough the car at the lower price but I have no interest in dealerships who lure you in with a lower price then jack it up on you last minute.
