1/20/2020Updated review*** update - we have now sold a car with shift as well. The process was so smooth. Met with Joel again and he took about 30 minutes to look over the car and test drive it. We sat down to do the paperwork and badabing we are done! We got an awesome price for our vehicle. To recap that's two cars we have purchased from them and one car we have sold. We have enjoyed working with this company so much. I'm sad we don't need anymore cars but we will definitely be sharing our wonderful experience with everyone we know.
We had such a great experience purchasing a car with Shift that we did it twice! My husband purchased a car for himself in July and we were blown away by the seamless process. Test driving, the financing and the final paperwork all went incredibly smooth. Fast forward a few months and I found myself looking for a new car. The car I wanted was at their LA location so we had it shipped to Portland. Again, the financing and deposit was all taken care of without a hitch. Joel from Shift met us at a local Starbucks to test out the car and of course we loved it. He showed us all of the features of the car, we took it for a great spin, and we signed the paperwork right there.Again, all done seamlessly and without any issues. The process seems scary at first but I will never buy another car by hunting through a dealership. This is the way to do it. Thank you Joel and Shift! I am sure we will be buying cars from you in the future.

5/31/2020Deceptive pricing. I found a couple of different cars from Shift on Autotrader where they were listed with an attractive price. Suprise! that's not the price...Shift charges another $895 "Shift service fee"...well thanks for wasting my time. so yeah $900, which is almost $1000 as far as I"m concerned. so paying another $1000 for doing their jobs? it's just a B.S. way to list the car below what they are actually charging. Sleazy. oh, and what's this? NON-refundable deposit. So if I want to hold the car for a day so I can come down and look at it...and decide I don't like it, I lose my deposit. This is supposed to be hassle-free, online buying..less work for the dealer, the wave of the future. Sounds more like new way to do less and take more of your money. No thanks.

5/22/2020A complete scam! Don't waste your time with this company! Make you an offer but when it comes down to actually buying your car it's completely different.

4/19/2019First to ReviewI was excited. A new Jeep.
Well, a new to me Jeep.
My Patriot was totaled in a rear ender and I am looking hard for a replacement. Insurance gave me a few bucks and I have to finance the rest.
Lots of Jeeps out there but prices are high. Saw a 2016 Compass about two grand below average price on Shift. Thought that would be a good deal and the Carfax was clean. So I scheduled a test drive. I took some time getting financing ready.
I got some text and calls asking if I will be keep my appointment. Yes, noon is my lunch time and I'll be here. Oh yes I understand that it is set for 45 minutes.
At 6 minutes before the appointment, the sales dude calls and said they will be 10 minutes late. Ok he did call. Ok no big deal.
So the sales dude arrived and call me again to let me know. I walk out of the office and the Jeep was a mess. It was not cleaned. It was not detailed. The guy was nice and calm and explained the Jeep came off the truck just this morning. He also explained that his detail man was sick and did not come into work. So the salesman had to clean up the jeep as best as he could. The salesman also explained that the jeep was in the shop for rear bearing replacement. But this jeep is only three years old.
So we scour the rest of the vehicle we find normal wear and tear some scratches and we pop the hood and we find a dirty dusty engine compartment. We pop the cover to the battery area and we find a lot of corrosion on the battery this battery must be three years old and ready to be replaced. This jeep was it Hawaiian rental car and so this battery has ran it's course.
We test everything and found the tailgate lifters need replacement. .
We took the Jeep onto the highway soon as we got it on the road we have everything adjusted everything was working and we got it up to speed about 65 miles an hour when there's a little shimmy in the steering wheel.
We get back and pop the hood again and listen to the engine. It was running rough. Needs a tuneup.
Here's the thing. If The jeep is not ready for show then call to reschedule the appointment. That would be way better than trying to show a car that is not ready. They wasted my time and they showed me a car that I really wanted to buy but not in that condition.
I told the sales dude to get all these items fixed replaced the battery tune the vehicle up and then come back and let's do another test drive. That was two days ago. Got another call from their sales department asking what my experience was and explain to them and I'm willing to buy the car if it was fixed up I've got no confirm commitment or anything.
In the meantime I'm still shopping for a Jeep and guess what I found a green patriot 2016 sport. And exact replacement for my 09 patriot sport. And also it was a good deal and this was from a dealership up in Vancouver Washington. It was clean, it was ready, it was prepped, it was in great shape ready to go. I bought it on the spot.
Shift might be the new way to buy used cars but they still need to get their act together. The sales person was very courteous, understanding, and friendly. The vehicle was not ready For test drives. I was greatly disappointed! Only one star.
UPDATE
About a week later I received a call from sales stating the they did most all the work on the 2016 Jeep Compass and asked if I would be interested in a test drive. I am very happy that they fixed that Jeep and gave me first crack at purchasing. It is a good value now that they cleaned and repaired it. I, on the other hand, love my new Patriot. So this Compass is still available. Raised to two stars for follow up. - Mike G.Portland, OR37 friends2 reviews
6/18/2019I tried to buy a car through Shift and when going through their financing options the APR was WAY too high for what my credit score is. I got outside financing that was almost 3.5% lower than what they offered. My financial institution and I both repeatedly requested a purchase order, after Shift told us that's what we needed to do to purchase the vehicle, only to find out the next week that Shift was selling it to someone else. I was upset and called to figure out how we could resolve this and basically got blamed for the situation and had the rep call me a liar for saying that had Shift sent the purchase order when requested that I'd own the car already. Had they sent the purchase order when requested (the previous week) the financial institution would have overnighted a check and the purchase would have been complete, so they straight up lied.
They still never explained why they didn't send a purchase order, either.
Don't buy from Shift.

2/21/2020This was a very easy car buying experience and nice to know what you see online is what you get with pricing - they do not negotiate. Vanessa was incredibly helpful, was there before we arrived ready to let us view, inspect, and test drive the car! She also looked up information on the car while I was driving which helped answer my questions and we ended up purchasing thanks to her help!

2/20/2020My experience with Joel was very chill. No bossy sales guy that "needs to go talk to their manager". The price is non-negotiable so there is no back and forth to worry about. Joel explained everything in easy to understand terms.

11/7/2019Julz Agulto was extremely friendly and informative throughout the entire process and made the experience very easy. Definitely a better experience than dealing directly with a car dealership as this was more personal and detailed to my specific wants and needs. Would highly recommend car buyers to use Shift.

10/18/2019Updated reviewVanissa was awesome and very straightforward with the buying process. You get an initial estimate and then set up an appointment for a review of your car. The appointment was under an hour and my car was sold. The convenience of it all was worth it. Unfortunately I live a pretty busy life so I don't have the time to nickel and dime a private seller. Shift seems to be on to something with this type of servic

9/25/2019Firstly, Joey was our concierge and I gotta give kudos for his patience and professionalism during the whole process. Joey was punctual for our appointment and was very willing to help out on whatever issues arose.
The business model of Shift is a relatively new one, one that is similar to that of Carvana, but different from that of a traditional dealership. I was familiar with Carvana, but going through the buying process in-person with Shift still surprised me. I can only speak about my own unique experience, knowing that some other folks may not have share the same experience.
Overall, the whole process was fast and simple. Car was in great condition. All transactions were done electronically outside of the paperwork that includes the Title & Registration, etc. It was so quick, at times it felt weird to be closing on a car in only a few hours. We've been searching for a car for a very long time because we are particular about what we wanted in a car. So committing to buying a car that we found barely a week ago and learning about Shift at the same time is very unexpected to us!
However, we knew what we wanted and the criteria for buying the vehicle was all planned before our appointment. Our finances were set up to buy on the spot to make the process streamlined. We always do the due diligence on researching the vehicles we look at and read up on the places we buy our vehicles from in order to make the everything seamless. When buying from a service like Shift, I cannot emphasize this enough.
I can speak candidly about certain things that I think can be areas where they can improve:
1. Don't expect them to have the same expertise as you would find a dealership that specializes in the make and model that you're interested in. Which is fine, but if you have technical questions, better do your research ahead of time.
2. That said, if it makes you have more confidence, get a pre-purchase inspection (ppi) at a trusted mechanic or dealership. Unfortunately, they won't allow you to lift the car during the ppi, but you can allow your mechanic to inspect the car during the appointment. Given the 75 minute time slot I had to test out the car, I don't think the ppi would have fit in the allocated appointment time.
We did have our moments of doubt but the Shift team does try to ensure that we had all information we needed to make the purchase with confidence. So even though we had a positive experience, I do see some room for improvement. If I have more thoughts, I will update at another time. - Mark O.Seattle, WA1 friend13 reviews
8/26/2019Complete waste of time. I drove three hours from Seattle just to try to do a test drive, but they messaged me one hour ahead of time that the test drive was cancelled because they hadn't delivered the car.
I ended up wasting a whole day driving 6 hours round trip on the interstate for no reason on my day off with my 8 months pregnant wife. When I complained to their management, they offered me a discount on their extended warranty that I never wanted in the first place.
I have very little confidence in their ability to do anything correctly. Given that they can't even successfully pull off a test drive, how likely is it they can actually do something complicated like a mechanical inspection? Stay far away. - Kiel B.Portland, OR5 friends3 reviews
2/15/2020Made an appointment to test drive a car on Saturday morning 11am. I like the idea of no pressure sales and no haggle pricing. Within a 12 hour period, I received 10 emails, 2 texts (one waking me up at 7:20 on Saturday morning) and a phone call. Canceled my appointment. So much for no pressure. Ugh

7/23/2019SHORT Version: Scratch off the internet gloss and they are just a used car dealer, and in some ways much worse. I've never had to struggle so much with a car dealer to take my money. No way would I choose to use SHIFT again nor do I recommend it to anyone.
LONG Version: I don't write reviews, if I have a bad experience I will move on and be happy it's over. However, after my buying experience I feel the need to point out issues I encountered. SHIFT never asked for any feedback so I hope some of this reaches them. I'm writing this review after having the car 13 days so I'm outside the 5-day return. I did have the car inspected at a dealership the day after I finally received it--no issues were found.
Vehicle Selection: I found SHIFT while searching through CarGurus. SHIFT does have great deals on low-mileage, late-year, used cars. However, take into account the built-in profit of $1,250 and those deals slide from "great" to "good/fair."
Test Drive: The test drive process is the only nice part about dealing with SHIFT. I arranged to test 2 different cars, one at my house and one near their Portland facility. The Concierges were nice, knowledgeable, and definitely no pressure to purchase. After the second test drive I put down my $250 deposit and things slide downhill from there.
Trade-in: I tried to arrange a trade-in as part of the financing. Forget the value you get from their system. During evaluation I was told my car had the "wrong tires" resulting in $250 deduction for each tire. I don't know how that conclusion was reached since the tires were 4 months old and specs matched the sticker on the inside door and owner's manual. I sold my car through the Kelly Blue Book Instant Cash (which was great) and got $1000 over the SHIFT offer.
Purchasing: The SHIFT website touts "bringing trust and simplicity to the used car market" nothing could be further from the truth. . .SHIFT is reasonable only if you accept their high interest rates and do not stray outside their rigid procedures. How this is any different than getting taken by the used car lot around the corner I don't know. It took 14 days from time of the hold deposit to when the car was delivered in the driveway.
Financing: SHIFT claims to work with outside banks and credit unions but they don't make it easy and are not interested in following your financing institution requirements. Everything is on you to coordinate and make sure things are done correctly. I purchased with a combo of cash (my previous car) and bank financing. The rate was 2.5% lower then their offer and no way they would match it. My bank required 3 things: their 1-page form, signed contract with final price, account info to transfer funds. Getting the contract was easy, but for some reason SHIFT does not want to provide ACH info to other banks. Funny since SHIFT will happily set up an ACH transfer to take your money. They wanted a mailed cashiers check, but after 4 days I got the ACH info.
Registration: Lots trouble getting a copy of the registration to my bank because that SHIFT only wants to do it at delivery. Before funding, my bank requires a copy of the DMV application showing me as the owner and the bank as lien holder. First time I received the registration it was for California, not Oregon. After more phone calls I got a copy of the OR DMV form, but later discovered it had the wrong VIN#.
Delivery: This was the source of most frustration when dealing with SHIFT and the irony of the "bringing trust." Every car dealer I've worked with will take the trade-in, certified check/down payment, the pre-approved loan paperwork from the bank, and had you the keys. SHIFT however refuses to deliver a car till 3rd-party bank funds are confirmed deposited in their account.
Even after giving SHIFT the ACH transaction number they waited till money was in-hand before arranging delivery. When I talked with SHIFT finance they told me I had to wait because "the transaction could be cancelled before funds were delivered." I can only figure SHIFT must have been burned at some point or decided all outside financial institutions are out to swindle them.
Problem I see with this scenario is now you are on the hook for a loan but no car to show for it. If something happens during delivery how is that handled? Will SHIFT's insurance cover the full cost of the vehicle if it was in an accident during transport? Are the concierges considered employees of SHIFT or some odd third-party contractor and they are considered responsible?
Conclusion: Do I like my car? Yes. Was it a special buying experience I want to repeat? NO. As some people note, it is frustrating dealing with a different online rep every time you call in, then have to repeat why you are calling. Yet, this is a minor annoyance compared to the nightmare of using an outside bank and the lowball trade-in process. I admit I got attached to the car and should have walked away. I hope some of this helps the next person.

7/26/2019Hello Andrew,
We're very sorry to hear about your experience with us. We do our best to ensure a stream-lined process but at times added variables can complicate the situation. Our teams may deduct from our original offer for a number of reasons, but in this instance it sounds like there may have been some confusion. We're always happy to explore solutions when given the opportunity, and we're sorry this led you to selling elsewhere. We have many partnered lenders to offer quick approved loans, and at times working with outside lenders can be difficult due to our processes vs their's. We do our best to work with outside lending but some of their expectations can not be met due to our business practice, and we're sincerely sorry for any delays this may of caused. We may require that full payment is complete for the vehicle before having it delivered. This is in order to ensure a sound transaction of goods. Finally, we would like to emphasize that should anything occur with your vehicle while in our possession, or on its way over to you, SHIFT would assume responsibility and be happy to assist. In addition, our concierge team is fully employed by SHIFT and are not "independent-contractors" nor third party members.
We're happy to hear that overall you are enjoying your vehicle, and we truly appreciate your in-depth feedback. This will give us a chance to reflect and improve our processes. It's thanks to customers like you that we're able to continue growing and expanding.
Best,
