Craving dim sum, but not wanting to drive to San Diego we gave Shanghai a chance. It was rather quiet when we stopped in at about 10 AM on a Sunday...we placed our order for a number of dim sum items: BBQ pork steam buns, soup dumplings, shrimp shumai, Chinese broccoli and a shrimp in rice paper. After placing our order we waited, and waited and waited (or so it seems when you are hungry). We also noted, that normally dim sum restaurants are busy at 10 AM on a Sunday. So, after waiting for what seemed like ever the steamed trays started rolling out. They were excellent. Everything tasted fresh made! The soup dumplings and shrimp shumai were the bomb. We were full but had to order one more of each. The waiter was really nice, he explained the wait was due to the food being made. In addition to the dumplings, the BBQ pork buns were very tasty, buns were light and fluffy, probably the best I have had.
To sum it up: sleepy restaurant that takes their time while making fresh dim sum. I would definitely visit again when hankering for dim sum. - Jen S.Laguna Hills, CA8959296513Jan 27, 2019
I look forward to returning and trying some more items from their menu. It was a quiet restaurant visit when my friend and I dropped in for lunch on New Year's Day. It looks like a traditional and quiet neighborhood Chinese restaurant. I am really happy that I came across this place. Our server was so friendly and attentive. He was helpful with his recommendations, too. We ordered the following:
hot tea
hot & sour soup-
huge portion; could serve 6+; somewhat mild/bland
egg rolls-
loved them; perfectly crispy and delicious flavor
pan fried pork buns-
remember to order the smaller plates if possible, we had lots of leftovers because we wanted to try so much; just okay for us, the filling tasted unusually sweet
pork soup dumplings-
same as above, remember to order the smaller plates, had lots of leftovers because we wanted to try so much; just okay for us, the filling tasted unusually sweet
stir fried green beans without pork-
my personal favorite, heavy on the garlic so beware, it's delicious, comes with steamed rice
We tried to order their roasted duck, but they ran out of it due to the holiday, probably. It looks amazing though from what we saw in the menu.
We did have a minor dilemma that came up with our hot & sour soup and our server was very attentive and apologetic about it. The management took care of the issue at hand very promptly and we really appreciated that. Will be back to try some more items from their menu. - Feb 1, 2019
My better half was craving Chinese food; however,
her cravings are as follows ...
I want Mexican food: Taco Bell
I want BBQ: Apple B's riblets
I want Chinese food: Panda Express
Ok, I really wasn't feeling Panda Express but with the Super Bowl happening in a few days,(and I really want to watch,"LIII") I went into full survival mode (keeping the peace) and blurted out, "Dim Sum!!"
My wife loves baked or steamed bbq pork buns.
We were in Temecula and Yelp showed Shanghai was a few minutes away.
Ordering dim sum here is different.
No ladies pushing the food carts and showing dim sum offerings.
You mark a menu for the items of dim sum you want.
Think ayce sushi menu style, same process.
Would I recommend the dim sum here??
Folks, my wife liked the dim sum (see pics) and
that was good enough for me.
However, I enjoyed the beef chow mein dish.
Very flavorful, beef was very tender and serving was plentiful.
Lunch was crowded on this Friday afternoon, parking isn't an issue but service (while friendly)
was pretty slow.
We saw only one server and one food runner.
Maybe someone called out sick but who knows. - 10034051067May 16, 2018
Excellent dim sum place in the Temecula area. The food comes out very quick. Prices add up when you're checking them off the list, but if you get about 6-7 dishes, you can expect about a $30ish dollar check which is NOT BAD. Definitely come here with cash!
My favorites were the taro bun, shanghai dumplings, soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), and the shrimp dumplings. So delicious!! - Joelle C.Sacramento, CA32383197Apr 20, 2018
Mmm...yelping, the joy of my life. I have a lot to digest with this restaurant. Apart from the deep fried shrimp that came with my husband's lunch special, everything was speculative as my husband had put it.
The green onion pancakes were ok, good dipping in vinegar and soy sauce. You can tell they cooked the green onion pancakes in high heat because you can see black spots on the undercooked dough and there wasn't much green onions on the slices. This appetizer cost $8.99. Outrageously expensive for not-so-good appetizer.
My husband ordered the General Tsao's chicken that came with a soup, (he chose wonton) Rangoon, deep fried shrimp, rice with black sesame on it, and a piece of broccoli to make it pretty. My husband said the chicken was too sweet and not spicy enough. He said it was like eating sweet chicken. As for the soup, he got excited when he got two wontons in the bowl, but the moment he bit into one he said chicken wonton and the chicken tasted old. Also, the soup was bland even though it had a bunch of veggies in it. He described it as nasty soup. The Rangoon was blah, Peony's in Lake Elsinore makes it better. As for the rice and broccoli, he didn't even bother to eat them. $8.99 for the lunch special.
My eggplant with garlic sauce was more vinegary than garlicky. The white rice that came with it was yuck! It's somewhere between sticky and mushy. I tried to eat my eggplant with rice but the flavor of the eggplant is not savory enough to eat it with rice and the rice was hard to choke down. I ended up packing my eggplant to go because I couldn't take another bite and by the time my eggplant came, my husband was already done with his lunch. $10.99 for this dish. On a side note: I like the fact that they used bamboo shoots and wood ear in this dish. I think of all the food we had there, the eggplant is probably better than the rest.
My husband had a coke that cost $1.50 and I had green tea which was free. I thought the tea tasted great but my husband said he could taste the tap water after one sip.
10% off if you pay your meal with cash.
The decor here is nice and warm. I enjoyed the atmosphere just not the food.
Oh! Also, they gave you a little tray of peanuts with spices to start out your meal. My husband was using his chopstick skills to pick up each peanut.
How did this restaurant get an average of 4 star rating is a mystery to me?
This place is too expensive for blah food. - Jannell L.Carlsbad, CA564512912Jan 8, 2019
Came here on a Sunday morning right at opening. We came specifically for dim sum, which works a little differently here. Everything is made to-order so there are not dim sum carts going around the restaurant. You order by making check marks on the menu they give you.
We ordered: custard buns, malai buns, pork xiao long bao, cream cheese crab wontons, pan fried pork buns, chive pockets, egg tarts, and deep fried pork dumplings. I liked the wontons - they were very crispy and made with a slightly thicker wrap than usual. The crab taste was very subtle but the wontons were very fresh. I also liked the malai bun - it was like a bun bao but inside was a coconut, lotus seed, yellow bean type paste. The pan fried pork buns were interesting - basically a pork bun bao with the bottom fried - would have been better if there was more pork. The chive pockets were really good - basically green onion pancakes with pork stuffed inside. The rest of the dishes we ordered were pretty basic. The XLB's couldn't compare to Din Tai Fung and the egg tarts were quite pricey ($5 for 2).
Overall, the dim sum was pretty average. I'd probably come back if I was in the area and wanted Chinese food, but I wouldn't make an effort to come back here.

Definitely a whole in the wall in the city of Temecula.
Dim sum all day! Good size portions.
First time was for dim sum and the most recent was for dinner. A great selection of dim sum but during dinner only dim sum available from the dinner menu. But that was okay, it gave a chance for my party to order and try various dishes. All items were made to order. TV's available.
Food:
Menu has plenty to choose from. Such a wide variety.
-A1 spring rolls - fresh shanghai style
-Green onion pancake (great starter)
-Soup Dumplings (very good!)
-Fried Wontons (kids will love these cream cheese filled crunch)
-Shanghai shepherds purse wonton soup (excellent wontons and savory broth/ enough to serve at least 8 people)
-Pan fried noodles Seafood (the sauce that you mix with the noodles is really delicious)
-Yangzhou fried rice (with shrimp and chinese sausage. requested w/no bean sprouts. kind of a little salty but still good)
-Half order of Crispy Duck (cooked perfectly)
-Sauteed sweet corn & pine nuts (a good side dish)
-Shanghai Pine Nut Yellow Croaker (served boneless/ breaded with sweet and sour sauce. must try)
-Orange Chicken (was okay.)
Dessert
-Red bean sesame balls (an excellent dessert to share and try) fresh crispy bite and just the right amount of red bean sweetness.
Service:
Excellent! We had a party of 9, about an hour before closing, and Shanghai restaurant easily accommodated us and all our orders. Waters filled without asking. Yangzhou fried rice; we mentioned no bean sprouts but order came out WITH bean sprouts and they easily made the correction with no problem.
Overall:
An authentic Shanghai style experience. Plenty of seating, fresh made to order food/ good size portions, and fast/ friendly service. Will definitely come back when in town.

Not too shabby for Temecula. Definitely a hidden gym. All items were made-to-order. Dim sum served all day (Dinner dim sum menu varies). Excellent menu with various entrees to choose. Easy to ready as well. Really enjoyed what my party and i had ordered (see pictures). Food portions served family style and can share among 3+ people. Quality was delicious fresh and served in timely matter. Service was great, no complaints. Waiters even box/ wrap your left overs for you.
Highlights: soup dumplings. green onion pancake. seafood pan-fried noodles, and green beans.
Will definitely remember to come back to this clean good quality shanghai style restaurant. - Daphne L.Monterey Park, CA53561Jul 8, 2018
We got three dishes that are super good.
My favorite is def the pine nut fish.
Flayed and fried to perfection. The fish meat is tender and flaky as well.
The menu is def authentic from multiple regions of China (not just Shanghai) and has some pretty labour intensive dishes as well.
I'm super impressed. I will def come back here again.
Service was good too. I tipped appropriately.

First off, big ups to the waiter JORDAN..he took care of us, and when we were outside, he kindly took a picture of our group of friends before we ate.
So it's New Year's Day 2017, and of course we were partying the night before, and the turn up was real, but anywho, it made
Us hell of hungry by the time it was check out time in our hotel. So we yelped, and found this spot which was the only one open, DIM SUM! Can't go wrong with dim sum right? Well, it did.
I'm not going to knock the customer service, they were great, but the food, was totally different story. The certain items we ordered were just damn right disrespectful.
We ordered the steamed pork rib, it tasted really foul, smelled off, and the texture was slimy. I'm no food expert, but I've eaten at enough legitimate dim sum restaurants to know how dim sum food taste. The shu mai was dry, and not fresh at all, in sure it was prepared and frozen a few days before they cooked it.
The corn and chicken soup we ordered was sweet. It tasted like they emptied a while can of sweet corn (including the juice) into the soup.
The only thing that was edible was the pork belly we ordered, but that wasn't even that good, tasted "stale" and annoy dry for pork belly.
I don't mean to give this restaurant a bad name, it's not my intention, but I would not eat dim sum here again. It was a bad experience for my taste buds, and it being my first meal for 2017, it was a big disappointment. I guess I've eaten at a lot better Chinese restaurants and accustomed to better food.
