Wow! My family had such a wonderful time at Schera's as we ate some delicious food. We sat out on their scenic riverside deck and had a dinner to celebrate the incoming marriage of me and my now-husband. The restaurant went above and beyond to make our dinner a special occasion and even made sure to be extra cautious due to my husband's severe peanut allergy. The food was absolutely delicious, the view stunning, and the memory of the dinner is one my entire family will always cherish. This restaurant is an absolute gem.

Not at all what you would expect to find in Elkader Iowa but there are surprises everywhere in Iowa. Located in beautiful downtown Elkader, (I mean that. It's a really nice downtown) right along the river sits a jewel of a place.
The decor is a mix of Algerian themes with photos of Elkader's past such as when they placed the keystone in the bridge are placed around the place.
Two main dining rooms lead to the deck that over looks the river it was a glorious sunny October day so that was delightful.
What wasn't great were the bees. There were many bees buzzing around as we ate
The other thing that wasn't great was there was one server working the 8 tables and doing her best to keep up so I can't fault her.
Once the food came out we forgave a lot because it was great.
We started with the appetizer platter and everything was stellar.
My wife had a huge salad and I had the camel burger. That's right the camel burger.
It was good but could have been better. It was a little overcooked and I thought a 1/4 less of seasoning in the meat would have been better.
The bees and the service which was not her fault brought my review down. We will go back they have some very interesting entrees we want to try. We will see how that goesHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 8, 2017
My friend Graeme and I were kayaking on the river. We were starving and wanted a beer and some place to relax. What a great find Schera's was. We went in totally blind based on the great reviews. We are so glad we came, places like this are why I love Yelp.
The patio is awesome, especially in the evening. We ordered an appetizer and some beers. There are plenty of local brews on the menu, and we were happy with the mixed plate of hummus, tabouli and more. Bugs werent bad, but the patio might get hot in the mid afternoon.
Our main courses were generous portions and we both enjoyed our selections. All in all it was a really nice evening. The service was great, but it was not fast so be sure you plan accordingly.
If you are in Elkader, check this place out. There is a nice walk, a stone bridge and some interesting brick murals in town as well.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 1, 2017
Great find in very rural Iowa, not many big cities around these parts and that means not as many options. Luckily this place brings big city style to rural Iowa.
They offer both a very nice drink selection and food as well. The food is described as Algerian, but they do have some American style too. For what they do and where they do it at this is a easy choice if you're close by and hungry. I've eaten here a few times when I was in town for work and always enjoyed eating here.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Matt M.Oklahoma City, OK133736162091May 31, 2019
Thyme and sumac "pizza," an ice-cold beer, great service, and a terrific view of the river? Yup. You bet.
Perfect little stop in northeastern Iowa, not far from the border with Wisconsin.
My husband of twenty-five years and I were duly impressed with this most unexpected little gem that we wouldn't have found had it not been for multiple recommendations from locals in the know. (Oh, and Yelp. Yelp reviews cemented our decision to go here even after glowing reviews from the locals in person.)
Five stars without reservation.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Teri M.Denver, CO3257Jul 12, 2021
Offer an impressively extensive beer selection. The inside is a bit dark but the seating on the back deck with the river view is lovely. The Algerian menu is new to us, but my hubby and I have been in twice and have really enjoyed the food. We will definitely be back!

I am very torn on how to rate this place. We have been told for well over a year that this is the bar to go to to try interesting, different beers. Being beer connoisseurs, we made this a special place to go and we're very disappointed by the service now that we've been there.
The bartender, Lee, was a total sweetheart and was very accommodating, but the owner, Brian, was a total jerk. I asked him how his flights worked since I am a frequent beer drinker and he replied with an attitude and a surly reply, "you pick the beer and then drink it." He even berated my choice of beers in my flight by saying they didn't go well together (I know my beers and I know what I wanted to try... hence a FLIGHT). Trying to make conversation, I asked him what he liked and he scarfed that if he didn't like it he wouldn't serve it. So he didn't give any helpful recommendations or talk about his selection at all.
The food was hot and fresh. We trusted Lee's recommendation and ordered the Algerian sampler appetizer as well as the shawarma plate with the Algerian soup as a side. EXCELLENT FOOD! But to be a beer lover with the intent of going to a place famous for their selection, we were sorely disappointed by the service.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
