The Scarborough House Inn, not to be confused with the Scarborough Inn (a hotel nearby) , is a cute, quaint inn nestled on a residential street in the heart of Manteo. I love the building with its weathered shaker shingles, bright green door, and welcoming walkway lined with flowerpots. It looked like something out of a movie, beautiful!
Inside, the lobby was dim, full of antiques, dark wood, vintage Tiffany lamps, Oriental rugs, faded chintz, a cuckoo clock and abundant in English charm. The owner of the inn was "off duty" but she left our keys and towels on the huge heirloom desk in the parlor. Talk about trusting your visitors... this was a sweet surprise.
Our room was just as charming as the lobby, appointed with aged floral wallpaper, red and white checkered calico quilts on the beds, vintage furnishings and pictures of a bygone era. It was certainly cozy and warm. What could've improved was the twin bed I slept in... it wasn't very comfortable as it was saggy... new mattress please, smiley face! My friend's queen bed was comfy though, she said. Another thing I would have appreciated is a set of soft, matching towels. Although the bathroom was clean, the towels were rough, mix matched, and worn. This is an easy fix to take this inn up a notch!
We only stayed one night, and when we checked out, again the phantom innkeeper was nowhere to be seen. While I appreciate the trustworthiness of the owner allowing its guests to check themselves in and out, we did encounter a couple of issues that would have warranted face-to-face contact. Next door lives a relative of the owner, I believe, and they have the yappiest little dog I've ever heard. No need for a wake up call here, lol! With a couple of improvements and a bit of sprucing, I think this idyllic country inn could easily be 5 stars! Maybe upon my next visit, I can meet the owner and they can earn that elusive 5th star *!!Helpful 15Thanks 0Love this 13Oh no 0 - Tammy E.Chester, VA6122457Aug 30, 2018
We head to OBX every year and take our annual beach vacation. Pack the truck up and head the same route down 460 to 58 bypass to 168 yes you know the route if that's where you spend a week of summer vacation. When you cross that bridge and roll the windows down all your worries seems to blow right out
Every year I see all these great unique spots I want to stop and explore such as Peace of the Past on 460 or Carolina Charm in Currituck ... Every year my husband just flys right on by them
I decided to take an overnight trip and stop at each and every unique place I've always wanted to explore for the past 15 plus years .
I get my good friend involved and on board . She's always up for a road trip .
That's how I stumbled upon this quaint little place .
We both like Tea Rooms and B&B's so I started calling and most places would not accommodate an overnight stay. A minimum of 2 days were required. An owner to one B&B suggested the Scarborough House Inn not to be confused with Scarborough Inn .
I expressed my appreciation and quickly looked up the number to see if I could book my reservations.(it was Wednesday and we were leaving the next day)
I was so elated that the lady on the phone was happy to accommodate us for just one night .
She suggested the room with a queen bed and a twin . All the rooms are antique inspired. Although not a B&B , it has all the charm of one. (because of not serving breakfast. It has English country cottage charm .
We arrived later that evening and on the desk in the lobby was a note to me from Ruth along with my key to Room 3 .
The room was cool and quite charming more than I even expected .
We had a small refrigerator / freezer , microwave , coffee pot ,TV and a small table to eat at .
The room was a nice size and the decor will take you back in time . From the quilts on the bed to the 4 poster queen bed give you a feeling of home even though your away from home. So quaint and charming . I look forward to planning another trip to Manteo and booking my accommodations here at the Inn.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - S. M.Richmond, VA09Nov 5, 2016
I stayed at the Scarborough House Inn for a total of 5 nights in September 2016 and was very satisfied with my experience. Yes the place is old, and family run ... but my room was clean, I found the owners accommodating and hospitable and it was overall a peaceful and pleasant experience. It is no longer a "B & B" so no food is provided. It is simply a motel like accommodation which includes a mini refrigerator and a microwave / electric coffee maker. I found it a super convenient short walk to the Manteo Downtown area which was great for me. I had no issues with the Wifi but you must remember to ask for the password when you check in. Like many of the older places in Manteo it does not have central AC just window units. Management lives onsite but ask how to reach them as they have other jobs. etc during the day ~ the younger members of the family now run the Inn.

Its a very quaint and unique in. It's very clean and the bed was super comfortable. The room had beautiful old wood furniture and antique lamps. The bathroom is very small. The room did have a nice mini fridge and microwave. I would stay here again.

Enjoyed our short stay. Bed was comfy and room very spacious. Coffee maker, microwave and refrigerator in room. Close to everything. Rebecca, the innkeeper, was helpful and nice--free candy at front desk. Will return

The owners were extremely accommodating and friendly. The room was clean, quaint, and entirely comfortable. The area was very nice and convenient / within walking distance to local shopping, restaurants, and the waterfront. And the cost was extremely reasonable considering the area and the time of year.
Only one complaint - the internet service needs to be upgraded. Trying to get online was like using 'dial-up'. If I'd really needed the internet, then I wouldn't have been a happy camper....but all in all, I would definitely go there again, and again.
Two thumbs up for Scarborough House.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jen L.Municipality of Monroeville, PA994Jul 2, 2013
We stayed here for our 1 year anniversary and were extremely pleased. It's clean, private, and quaint. We chose the "King Suite" in the Guest House. The room is very large, with a kitchenette, little table and chairs, loveseat, and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi. The ladies were very friendly - when we called to figure out check out time, they said, "Around noon, but if you can't get out then, no need to rush." The room was only $125 a night during peak season, which is cheaper than most hotels. There are bagels, cream cheese, muffins, orange juice, etc. provided for breakfast, so it's not a hot breakfast, but I knew that going in. I would definitely reccommend Scarborough House Inn!

In planning a vacation this year we decided to try a bed and breakfast. It's just me, my husband and our 13 year old so extra rooms weren't necessary. We got the suite which had a pull out sofa couch and a master bedroom with one bath. This unit came with a kitchenette. At first glance it's very quaint but once you stay for a while the flaws became clear. Updating is a must for any location and this one truly needs it. No internet! That's a big problem in this family. We like not having to use ALL our data to check for local restaurants, maps, attractions. .,etc. No clocks, anywhere. That's just weird. Very old tvs. They aren't that expensive any more so update. Plus no written tv guide. Channel surfing when you're already tired is a headache. No DVD player, again not expensive anymore. Lighting was antique lamps and few of them. The bulbs got so hot it seemed dangerous. Maybe it's just me but I was not impressed with all of the outdated items in the room. The fold out bed had springs in all the wrong places. We ended up folding over the foam extra on the mattress to make a thicker cushion over the bed so our 13 yr old could sleep. Owners, lay on these things occasionally to see how you like it. If you can't sleep how are we supposed to? The complimentary breakfast left in the fridge were bran muffins (who really eats these things?) OJ, apple sauce, a few packages of pastries and no paper towels to be seen. It was an interesting experience staying here and the one saving grace was that no one was in the upstairs unit until our last night. But trust me you here everything they do the next morning. The owners were very nice and accommodating when we asked for extra towels (and just an FYI they use a scented detergent, didn't set well with me as I get headaches from perfume items). I believe I won't be staying in a B&B again for a long time.

Fields and Rebecca are extremely accomodating, prices are reasonable. They go out of their way to ensure you have a good time and a pleasant stay. They will give you advice on where to go and what to see. Great location for exploring Roanoke Island.

This was our second time staying here at this quaint bed and "breakfast". The separate guest house has a whole up stairs suite with snacks/pastries. Very nice owners, though we hardly saw them.
