This place gives me the shakes. Well, actually a numb tingling in my cheeks, a tense jaw, and heart palpitations. In other words, they use MSG.
I just came here for lunch with a friend and by the end of lunch, our jaws/cheeks were numb and we had the shakes. I mean, it was tasty, but that's what MSG does.
To be fair, I don't think everything has MSG - I don't think the chicken wings or shrimp and leek dumplings had it, but definitely the sauteed bean threads. But why why why? The food is so flavorful on its own -- why add MSG?!
Anyway, the shakes finally wore off and left us with dull headaches. I didn't know restaurants still used MSG in this day and age, especially in SF. What is this, the 90s??! That shit was tasty but definitely never eating here again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Jun 18, 2012Previous reviewEveryone raves about the dry fried chicken wings here. I guess they're good -- if you've never lived in or been to NY and had the korean fried chicken -- see NYT article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/07/dining/07fried.html?pagewanted=all; also can check out Kyochon, Bonchon, UFC among others). I got super excited thinking it was that kind of new wave chicken wing, but it ended up just being the regular chicken that comes in all Chinese-Korean fusion restaurants (kan poon gi)
Don't get me wrong - the chicken is not inedible. It's fine. Two-dimensional at best. It's slightly spicy + garlicky, so they're on the right track. The skin texture leaves much to be desired as it's thick and not enough of the fat is rendered. I was hoping for a thin but crispier type of skin.
The spinach with bean threads was heavenly. I would come here again just for that. - Nadra L.San Francisco, CA01Feb 21, 2024
THEY HAVE SOME OF THE BEST WINGS!!!!! I've never sat and ate inside but they seem to have great customer service when they deliver.

Hands down the best Asian chicken wings in SF! The dry fried chicken wings are flavorful with a spicy & sweet sauce. It's our favorite item on the menu and the main reason we love coming to San Tung.
You can't go wrong ordering any of their menu items. Our favorite items to pair the chicken wings include the noodles with peanut sauce, noodles with black bean sauce, green beans, fried rice, Mongolian beef, and dumplings.

Great food if you are ready for a long wait. Haven't eaten inside in a few years so unsure of if the wait system has gotten any better or worse. I do recommend to come when they open or else just be prepared to wait a while. Once you are seated the service is fast.
I always have to get an order or two of the wings as they are my favorite. Depending on the size of the group I am with we also often order the string beans, black bean noodles, pork and napa dumplings, and the sweet and sour pork.
San tung is also always a solid option to get to go and eat at home or in the park Ordering on the phone is sometimes hard as the phone line is blocked with everyone else trying to order as well. But when you eventually get through, pick up is fast and easy.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1916578Apr 4, 2024
What can be said that hasn't already been said of the famous San Tung?
This place is always busy, and for good reason!
The dried fried chicken wings is the star of the show, they are perfectly fried and drenched in a spicy candied sauce.
Along with the famous wings, we ordered the dried fried string beans which goes perfectly with the wings.
To round out our meal, we ordered the peanut sauce noodles. Creamy and nutty, they come with an assortment of shrimp, scallops, green peas, and mushrooms. The noodles have a great chew.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 2, 2024
Had to wait quite a while for a table for 7 on a Saturday dinner (almost an hour) but it was well worth it. One of my top recommendations in SF!
As everyone else says, the wings are the #1 must try here, so crunchy and the perfect mix of sweet, savory, and spicy. Also got the mongolian beef and string beans (too sweet in my opinion).

I've been wanting to come here for foreverr but I was so sad because it was honestly just disappointing. It's not that the food was terrible, but it was just so underwhelming.
I ordered their original dry fried chicken, black bean sauce noodles, and cold noodles. The dry fried chicken was solid! It was sweet, salty, and crispy. However, it's pretty expensive just for 12 small wings LOL and the more I ate it, it got a bit too sweet for my preference. We were deciding between the dry black bean sauce noodles and the regular one, and I wish we ordered their dried one instead; the regular one was like a lighter version of Korean jjajjangmyeon. The flavor was super mild and the noodles were on the firm side. The cold noodles were really disappointing LOL. The noodles were even more firm than the black bean sauce ones and the peanut sauce was really watery and tasted diluted. On the menu it says that there's five spice beef, but the beef just tasted and felt like pho brisket ;-;
For a party of 2, the wait was around 15-20 minutes which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We did have to share a large table with another small party, but I didn't mind that. Service was great! Everyone was attentive and kind, but I don't see myself coming back anytime soon because of the price and not so great food. Their menu is pretty large, so I mighttt come back to try some other items if I was in the area but I wouldn't reorder any of the items I tried.

Have been wanting to go to San Tung ever since I first moved to SF, so happy to have finally gotten the opportunity.
I've heard so many great things about the chicken wings and string beans. Chicken wings are a must -- we ended up ordering 4 plates for 6 people.
The fried rice was also extremely flavorful, but would skip out on the black bean noodles for next time.
A true authentic place, well worth the trek! Do pay attention to their opening times/hours, sometimes they are closed randomly.

I haven't been here for a long time but their dry chicken wings are as good as ever! We didn't even want to order anything else because we were so fixating on the chicken! We got one plate per person since we didn't want to share our delicious chicken with each other! One plate has 12 pieces so I did have a couple leftover chicken to take home but you can definitely eat a whole portion alone! A must try if you are in SF! YOU WILL NOT REGRET!!!! :)

Every time I come here it's a CHICKEN PARTY!
LOL. Just because their dry fried chicken wings are always ordered. By every table. The best wings ever.
They're always busy. I've been here several times. Always had to wait for a table to clear up. But service is good, attentive for the most part, and efficient overall.
All the other food is great too. My favorites to order besides the wings is a fried rice and pan-fried potstickers! (not pictured) They are SO crispy but so flavorful inside. I usually dip with the sauces on the table.

Wings!! Still some of the best twice fried chicken wings around.
Sweet chili sauce dripping
Yes.
Also had the shrimp leek dumpling and mushu pork in a pancake
Service is efficient
Ambiance is busy, nothing fancy. Long lines but if you're open to sharing tables, you will get seated faster.
JYW totally recommends!
