Here's the thing: I don't want to write this review and share how great my local salon for one very good reason.
You might go there. You'll see the quality of the stylists and the excellent work. Then those coveted weekend or evening appointments I need vanish even faster than they do today, which is about comparable with an ice cream cone in front of a kindergartener. But this is Yelp. You're here for the inside scoop -- and it's my duty as a reviewer to share.
First off, let's talk parking. Berkley has private lots and street-side parking. 12 Mile can be difficult, especially at prime hours (summers in the weekend). That said, avail yourself of the free parking on the next block up. If you use all that spacious parking behind Salon Tru, doughnuts to dollars, you'll park in PNC and you will be towed. Up or down a block, it's public. Salon Tru has room for 4-6 cars behind the building, parked two deep, but don't start off your experience in a rush. Give yourself time to meander a block. Heck, park behind Coco Fairfield's, have a nice brekky or lunch, and meander up to Salon Tru.
Salon Tru is an Aveda-partnered salon, meaning they exclusively feature Aveda products. In addition to the famous shampoos, conditioners, and dyes, the salon also carries a selection of Aveda cosmetics, lotions, and potions. Unlike many an Aveda salon I've been to, Salon Tru stylists do not push the styling products or shampoo/conditioners on you during your service. They'll happily disclose what they used if you ask.
In my ongoing hunt for a good stylist, I ended up at Salon Tru mostly on the word of mouth of Yelpers and proximity, since it's within walking distance from my house. However, I've found a match made in hair heaven with Keeley -- and the other stylists are plenty friendly, talented, and engaging as she is. Now that I've discovered someone with an incredibly thorough dyeing technique that suits my dark hair, I'm a loyal customer.
The results speak for themselves. I get compliments from random people on the street and my coworkers all the time about how good my hair looks. Trust me, I'm no sorceress of the coiffure. I need all the help I can get to master my mane, and Keeley gives me gorgeous colour and doable styling. If you're much more skilled than I, the stylists here deliver.
Prices are comparable to the Woodward corridor salons. A full colour, glaze, and cut ran me around $115 without a tip. Excuse me while I pet my loose curls for a moment.
Best of all, the experience here is serene and soothing. You aren't exposed to the glare of a hundred fluorescent lights or put on display in front of a bank of plate glass windows. Natural light flows in off 12 Mile, but it's never too loud or too cramped. Even during the busy holidays when things really hop, the salon preserves its gentle, lively atmosphere. Further, and this is important to tall girls like me, their sinks don't kill my neck when washing. Yes, their reclining chairs are some of the better ones I've used, and you won't go back to your seat with a massive crick in your neck.
So what are you waiting for? Hop on by beautiful Berkley in a place with a track record of great results.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Myranda j.Cass Corridor, Detroit, MI1995317Oct 25, 2016Updated review
I've been going to Logan for years now. I followed her when she moved from curl up& dye to Tru. She's an excellent stylist who works great with curly hair which I know is often a concern for people. She's great with color as well as gave recently gotten some beautiful balayage highlights from her that I'm really pleased with.
The salon itself is pleasent, everyone is always lovely and kind!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Oct 3, 2015Previous reviewLogan has been cutting my hair for years now and always does a fantastic job. I usually come in wanting a different cut every other time and she always does a great job obliging my whims. Plus this place smells always great.

Horrible experience. Horrible staff. Unfriendly, unaccomodating, unhelpful, rude. Clearly unaware that they work in a service industry. Incredibly disappointed. This place was recommended to me and I can't believe how wrong they were. Don't waste your time and money here. Stay away!

Keely is amazing! Best haircut I have had. Worth every dollar! This salon is well worth the money ! Warm environment with welcoming staff! The stylists are all good, but Keely is the best!

After years and years of searching for a salon I feel comfortable in, I found Salon Tru. I've gone there about 4 times and have never had a bad experience. The salon is the perfect balance between cool and young as well as comfortable and unpretentious. The stylists don't dress to compete with each other, like I feel they do at other salons, and they are all very friendly and helpful. I've had a different stylist each time. The last time I had Jill who did a great job. My cousin had an awful dye job at another salon, and Salon Tru fixed it beautifully.
There is easy parking in the back and the prices are very reasonable. It is also an Aveda salon, so that is always a plus.
I'm giving 4 out of 5 stars because though I have always been happy, I've never been blown away. That could be because I've always had trims, never anything drastic. All in all, I highly recommend.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jill S.Southfield, MI1911Mar 6, 2014Updated review
I did ask to speak to the owner....
Anyway, I left with orange hair and unhappy with my service. I spent over $160 so I guess you don't have the bills correct either. I used my debit card for both. I wasn't happy when I left, I still had orange and yellow hair. Geez...
I ended up going to Azenza salon and it was fixed in an hour and looked amazing! They were confident that they could correct it and did. They were not concerned at all that I used box color on my hair because they see that all the time. They were shocked that I already had two salon appointments without it looking half way decent. I was also given a deep conditioning treatment on the house and the whole ordeal didn't break the bank. I'm thankful my hair color is corrected.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

I'm sorry that Jill feels this way. I would've hoped that she had contacted me first. I would love to resolve any issues she is having with her hair. I had no Idea she was unhappy with her service. I was there for her first appointment and she seemed very happy. Unfortunately when she called and asked to come in the second time, I was not there and she never contacted me.
This particular stylist has over 7 years experience. When we have a client that has come in for a color correction after using a home boxed color, typically very difficult to correct, we inform the client of this difficulty and consult with each other so that we can, with all our experience, correct the color without causing damage to the hair. I do feel the $122 total for both days of service was very reasonable for the amount of time and care that my stylist gave to Jill.
We have been providing excellent service for over 12 years and always strive to give the very best customer service and listen to our clients needs. I would hope that in the future Jill would contact the owner and give them the opportunity to resolve any issues. Thank you, Roxanne 248-547-4084Feb 6, 2014Previous reviewHorrible experience!
Ugh, I came in for a color correction that didn't get corrected twice and my hair is fried! The stylist was nice and attentive but I didn't feel she was experienced. She "counseled" with several other stylist's about what color options she should use on my hair including with the owner but non of these people actually even came to look at my hair. After my color was washed out it looked bright orange! The stylist applied a toner which was to take care of it and all it did was darken the orange and I was billed $84 and sent home to come back two days later to have it fixed when she had more time (red flag, I know).I went back, spent 3 hours and had 3 more colors applied and now my hair is light orange and yellow. I was assured that the colors were "all natural" and wouldn't damage my hair after expressing a concern. When my hair was being dried I could see that it was just looking worse and was told she couldn't do anything more for at least a week (I wasn't coming back). I had the stop the stylist from using a wire brush on my hair because I could see it ripping off. This is where it really gets bad...when I was getting ready to walk out in tears I was told it would be another $90 for the products. I was seriously shocked! I didn't pay that amount but close and my hair is so damaged. I've never had a worse experience at a salon in my life. Usually if something goes wrong salons cover the cost and the owner didn't come out to speak to me.
Don't go here. My long hair will have to be cut to chin length and I'm considering an attorney. - Paula D.Ferndale, MI48Dec 25, 2015
On Dec 22nd, I had my hair done by Logan. What once had been a luxurious head of hair that I possessed had become terribly botched as she chopped and improperly layered it at different lengths. At first it appeared that the style I had desired to achieve had turned out just as I had hoped, only to find out that was due to her blow drying my hair. Now I am left with one side that is noticeably lopsided with uneven layers, with the layers in the back trimmed shorter than the others. It makes me sick that I had paid $39.00, aside from the $5.00 tip. All I had wanted to achieve was a medium long layered haircut.

I have been a client here for several years and I have never been happier with my hair. Sarah is fantastic. She listens to what you need from your hair and helps you achieve that. I highly recommend the salon and Sarah.

I'm really weird about getting my haircut because most people don't know how to cut into it. I have straight hair that's thicker than it looks and I've found most places don't layer it enough and it ends up looking flat on top and heavy at the bottom. I usually go to the expensive, trendy salons, but I was trying to be more budget conscious since I went back to school and don't work as much anymore.
The salon itself was really clean, simple, and relaxing. The Aveda products are definitely a plus as well.
As for my haircut, Sylvia took my hair from long and shapeless to a really cute long bob. She was really meticulous about the shaping and was not afraid to cut into it. I would definitely recommend her!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Misty J.Detroit, MI391722Apr 26, 2015
Logan was recommended to me by a friend and she did not disappoint! It sounds silly but it's hard to find someone that can cut curly hair so i am super excited! Prices are reasonable and the salon is clean. Also the shampoo they use smells amazing.
