10/20/2020I like this Safeway. It's definitely a downtown grocery store, so it's got some issues. But they had a good selection of merchandising and the staff were relatively friendly.

11/6/20201 check-inThis UnSafeway is always my last resort. Unfortunately it's the closest to my home so sometimes when I'm in need of an ingredient and short on time, I make a quick stop. Every time I say to myself, I'm never coming back.
I've actually written a review before and somehow it disappeared. Really not happy when YELP does that and it seems to happen more and more frequently.
Since my last review of this Safeway location, I'm going down another star to just one. Unfortunately there is no option for zero stars.
A few days ago I purchased a bag of mandarin oranges and when I got home and emptied the sack, more than half were rotten and moldy. Yesterday I brought them to the store to exchange for a bag of edible oranges. Because I didn't have the receipt, they wouldn't let me exchange for a new bag. Of course I gave them my Safeway card number, and from previous experience I know they can look up my number and see that I did indeed pay for this bag of mandarin oranges, but the customer service rep refused. And was extremely rude. Said it would take too long. The guy before me took several minutes to gather his pockets of change to purchase cigarettes, and he had time fir that, but no time to key in my phone number to view the receipt.
Meanwhile, other customers walk the store without masks, stand in line with zero distance in between, fill their pockets and backpacks with items, camp out front, do drugs in the doorway, bring in their filthy pets - and they allow that! But a paying customer with proof of purchase for an item that should never have been on the produce floor due to the poor quality, and they refuse to assist.
That was officially my last visit to the UnSafeway on Jefferson. Done. - Matt E.Portland, OR
3/27/2020I mean... it's Psycho Safeway. And it can live up to the reputation. Lots of characters here, to put it nicely.
That being said it's pretty reliable for most anything I could want or need, other than some weird things like not having a meat counter.
The self-check area has a ton of stations and always moves quickly.
It's an OK grocery store, but I sure wish I lived near a Fred Meyer instead. - Rebecca B.Portland, OR5 friends2 reviews
8/16/2020The cake baker at this store is very, very good. I recommend their cakes for any occasion.

10/3/2020This may or may not be fair, as Safeway delivery operations vary from store to store (did you know that?) and so my review pertains to the Safeway at Tanasbourne on SW 185th. With health conditions keeping me out of stores during the pandemic, I was hopeful that Safeway's newly announced delivery service would be a help, but not so much. The first time I tried it I could not register online, and was told it was because of needed repairs. Second time I tried I was indeed able to place an order; it was delivered about an hour and a half late, but the delivery man was pleasant and helpful, so I'd give that effort three and a half stars. But wait: today I spent almost three and one half hours on the phone, trying in vain to get the computer program to work, only to receive error message after error message, followed by two hopeless talks with administrators, finally getting a lecture on why Chrome would be a more receptive browser for their delivery program. (I've been told this twice and wonder if there is a business arrangement with Google for the service? I spent almost 4 hours on the phone, hating to lose all the time I had put in, before deciding to give up. The coup de grace was when I spied the delivery charges on the website: the first time I had a choice of delivery windows, which ranged in price on the same day from 5.95 to 9.95. This day, had I been able to place the order, my delivery would have come up in three days (I said three days), and no matter the time window, all deliveries were 9:95. I won't be using this service again, and it's a shame, as wel'l certainly be needing such programs for a while longer.

7/3/2020Updated reviewThis store refuses to enforce the mask mandate put up by the governor of Oregon. Don't shop here unless you wanna get Corona.
2/27/2020Previous reviewThese guys are super trash. Not only is the store a disgusting cesspool of junkies shooting dope outside the doors, the store management does super shiesty shit. They will load up 4 or 5 rows of there own garbage brand that tastes like shit and they over charge for, but they package it to look exactly like the leading brands, and surround the leading brands with thier own garbage, so you accidentally pick them and get fucked out of money. There food is always borderline out of date from the store brands too. You can have it in your fridge for 12 hours and the meat smells spoiled already. Safeway is super garbage. Save your money and go a 1/4 mile to Fred Myers up the block.

8/26/2020I hate coming here. The security profile me and follow me around the whole time I am shopping. Not only is it uncomfortable but also incredibly annoying. They don't even try to be slick about it either they just straight up stare and follow me. I have never stolen from this store nor do I ever attempt to so there is literally no reason for the security to treat me this way. I have also seen them tackle a homeless woman to the ground and put their knee on her head. I don't know what is so valuable in the store for someone to get treated that way for stealing specially if they're homeless. It seems like the security needs a new staff and better training.

4/11/2020I feel uncomfortable and intimated shopping here. I feel I'm being watched, and the security guards are intimidating, the cashiers are unfriendly and don't really greet you or are talkative. Not a family friendly store.

10/3/2018Updated reviewThey doubled the amount of self checkouts so now instead of waiting 10 minutes to check out, I either don't have to wait or only wait like a minute. The homeless issues also seem to have improved.
10/16/2017Previous reviewHorrible customer service, not enough cashiers, long lines for self checkout. Prices are similar to Whole Foods, some items are even more expensive. Lots of drug addicts wandering around. I even saw one guy shooting up while sitting near the Starbucks inside.

6/19/2019They are making great progress in cleaning up store. Have added lots of security and it helps a lot.

5/17/2019Ever since Compass Security took over, the shopping experience has improved IMMENSELY!! There's no longer any loitering/camping at the store entrances, and the shoplifting has gone down to essentially zero. Before Compass Security took over, literally anyone could walk into this Safeway and take anything, knowing that security guards couldn't even touch them. So, the atmosphere wasn't exactly the greatest back then. :)
So, it's quite the joy to be shopping for food, ingredients, etc with other honest shoppers now! :) - Margo H.Portland, OR3 friends20 reviews
5/25/2019This Safeway store is really trying to turn things around. They've hired more security folks and they're attempting to cut down on the number of people just hanging around outside. In addition, they've begun to remodel, so there's hope that it will soon be a better place to shop.

3/15/2020wow, where do I begin. The rumors are true, they don't call this particular Safeway The Psycho Safeway for nothing. This place hired a bunch of shitty security guards who has been harassing me on a regular basis. I suffer from anxiety and depression, these security guards went as far as to abuse their power ban me for accusations that weren't true. They had said that I was acused of theft. They went as far as to further abuse their power and authority by saying that I am banned from all of the Safeways in the state. This turned into a very uncontrollable situation, now I am in distress because they even went as far as to spread rumors about me to their customers in forth being made fun of.

8/18/2018Opossums Say "No Thanks!" to Safeway Hamburger
Opossums are not known for their epicurean sensitivities, rather they'll eat pretty much anything put in front of them. In graduate school, I temporarily had several in captivity and they would eagerly approach and scarf down whatever I put in their food bowls. There was one exception -- Safeway hamburger. After one or two sniffs, they would give a look of disdain (at least as much as possible for an opossum) and move away. Although I thought this would be a treat for them, they reacted the same way every time I offered the hamburger.
Some people are prejudiced against opossums, but they are natural cleaners, removing roadkill and other carrion. And, like the French, they are aficionados of snails (and slugs), so they are the gardener's friend. - Jackson W.Portland, OR0 friends9 reviews1 photo
8/4/2017Horrible customer service and poorly organized departments. Everything that is "on sale", they've run out of. Every morning, no deli department worker seems capable of working the bar until 7am. Next is the fact that when you finally manage to get someone to take your order, they complain to you like it is your own fault for not going elsewhere.
The other departments are lacking as well. Self check out is a joke, better to deal with a cranky cashier then the person overseeing the self check out.
Safeway can blame all the homeless people they want to but really, it's the poor management and even worse staff. - Ali P.Portland, OR133 friends3 reviews
6/16/2018Rob in the pharmacy is misogynistic, condescending and overall rude and unpleasant.
Worst pharmacy staff, and general management of any safeway I've ever been to in my life. This finally pushed me over, and I'm moving all my prescriptions elsewhere, and never shopping at another Safeway store again. - Dan H.Portland, OR0 friends4 reviews
6/19/2019It is obvious that Safeway is trying hard to improve the shopping atmosphere at this store. In just the past two or three months the added security staff have really made a difference. Rather than only going here when there was no reasonably good option, we now go rather frequently. The current renovation work seems to indicate that Safeway management is taking a long term approach to providing a pleasant place to shop. It's a nice improvement to the neighborhood.

2/28/2019Unfortunately this is the closest and most convenient grocery store to me and I don't have a car or I'd choose somewhere else. I will go to the Pearl location or Fred Meyer when I can which are both far superior. This location is constantly out of stock of items pretty much every single time I come here. I'm getting pretty fed up. Don't even think of trying to actually take advantage of sale items late in the evening. The whole shelf will be cleared out.

4/23/2017The management in this place is ridiculous!!! I came in today to shop with my family after Sunday Brunch. Prior to tackling our shopping list, I needed to relieve myself so I could shop comfortably. I approached three employees and each one of them lacked the empowerment to give me a bathroom code so I could pee. Each of them timidly referred me to the customer service desk at the front of the store; keep in mind we already had a partially full grocery cart at this point. I approached the customer service desk where there was a line of customers waiting for other services. I waited patiently only to be told "you need a receipt to prove you're a paying customer before I can give you the code". REALLY?!? Needless to say I was not happy and voiced my frustration as she reluctantly gave me the WRONG CODE!
Safeway in downtown Portland on SW Jefferson is a poor reflection of your brand and customer service. This store is clearly riddled with a social problem that is being projected onto your paying customers! I will never step foot in a Safeway grocery store again! Frankly, I've been treated better and given greater customer service in a WALMART store. - Ellis B.Portland, OR62 friends51 reviews10 photos
6/1/2018What kind of world do we live in where you go to give a business your hard earned money for lunch and the deli server treats you like crap, I won't be back Safeways you've lost me for life !!
