In Chicago for the weekend visiting our son. Fuel pump on my 2001 Saab 9-5 failed late Sunday night downtown. Called Fred Monday morning and he was at my hotel by 10:00 am. He diagnosed failed fuel pump and replaced it in the parking lot of hotel in about 90 minutes. I was good to go and drove 9 hours home with no issues. Price was reasonable, especially considering I didn't have to pay for a tow service. I can say that this truly was Saab service "above and beyond."

My husband and I were looking for a mechanic for our Saab and we found this one to somewhat specialize in this make. Long story short, we went in with a small oil leek from a vacuum pump. We got a very reasonable quote and left our car for the repair. We ended up going back, with the same issue, 5 times! Fred, the mechanic is a man of few words, to say the least. All we heard was that he doesn't know where the leak is coming from and that "he doesn't know what to tell us". How about a little research, Fred? Or offer a refund for a job not done? We were simply given the silent treatment. What a customer service!
After the last time and an even greater leak we gave up. Took the car elsewhere and after doing a smoke test they were able to identify the leak origin in an hour. Hear that Fred? A smoke test.
To sum it up: reasonable prices are only reasonable if the repair is done. In this case we just threw the money away.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Karen K.Chicago, IL051Jan 10, 2012
THIS GUY ROCKS! I wish I could give Fred at http://www.dzlsabe.com/ or 'Saab Service Chicago' more than 5 stars. He'll bring great service to your door; incredible Saab knowledge with affordable solutions; honesty and obvious passion for fixing all things Saab.
When the electronics and fiber optics weren't working my 2004 Saab 9-3, he managed a short-term solution to get the radio back using a kid's juice box straw--amazing! Then he left to start searching for a good USED amplifier box knowing new parts were really expensive and not what we wanted to spend.
He's slightly unconventional (sold his shop and bought the only diesel Saab in US with proceeds) but after he diagnosed the problem, he tested everything by using parts from his own cars. All of this at a fraction of the cost I would have paid a Saab dealer. I will never look for Saab service elsewhere.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Zach N.Saint Paul, MN15May 14, 2013
Great place. Fred knows his Saabs and won't charge you an arm and a leg. Also, very honest about issues. I recommend him over any other Saab repair shop in Chicago.
Just as a heads up he uses space in another garage so don't be confused when you don't see Saab Service and Beyond when you pull up to the shop.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Javier R.Chicago, IL15Oct 12, 2013
The place is alright it is convenient and the work done is good but the price is not good, too expensive for my wallet $100/hour labor.
Took my Saab in for some work; it was shutting off on me. Fred I think his name is got it all fixed for me. told him to do the manufacturers recommended service also and sure he told me all it is, is an oil change and some filters it'll be 100 bucks, sure I said. I get there and he tells me all it really was, was an oil change. I tell my self sweeet guess it won't actually be 100 bucks, thinking to my self; no oil change costs $100.
fast forward to the cashier------that'll be $100 dollars sir; my head is spinning in confusion, astonishment, disbelief all too shocked to contest the fee. O yeah and $40 dollars more than previously quoted for the other repair. "Pop" my brain snaps from its frozen state and I speak up like NO I was told only this much plus the $100 so he worked his computer and brought it down so I was only overcharged $4 totally not professional on their part!
And no this is not Saab Above and Beyond nor Underneath it is Gateway Auto Service (yelp it) it is just a marketing scheme to let you know they do specialize in Saab's here.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ron I.Silver Spring, MD4741Jun 9, 2015Updated review
I don't know if the part was defective or what but the wheel bearing lasted for 1 year before it needed replacement. I had it replaced exactly 1 year later in Maryland.

Fred replaced a wheel bearing for me today quickly and at a great price. I will definitely be back when (not if, knowing my car) my Saab needs any more work.

I'm on my second Saab, so I know the value of having a great mechanic. Fred is a great mechanic. My 1999 9-5 wouldn't start so I had to get it towed over to his shop. He had it back and running in 30 minutes. He only charged me for a half hour of labor and even got me a good used part for my car which saved me a ton of money. Happy I found Fred and will be returning the next time my Saab needs work.

Fred was a pleasure to work with. I was having some electrical issues with my 2007 Saab 9-3. He was able to do all the needed repairs the same day, while I waited, and for a great price. He even took the time to come out to show me what was causing the problem, and what he needed to do. Definitely will be returning in the future if my Saab needs more repairs. (Although hopefully that won't be necessary). Thanks a bunch Fred!

As a first time customer, I emailed Fred at 8pm about a problem with my 2002-9-3. He replied that night and was able to fix my car early the next day. Though I sought him out because the check engine light was on, I left him a list of other issues/questions I had. Fred explained the problem causing the engine light to go on and gave me options for addressing the issue; he adressed my other concerns and did not try to sell me anything I didn't need! I highly recommend Fred and will go back to him for all my Saab needs.

I have owned my 1999 Saab 9-5 since 2005, which I purchased from Perillo. For the last few years, I've been taking it to Saab Tech because the prices there were much better than at Perillo. However, the staff at Saab Tech is NOT friendly. I took it there for so long because I really didn't care that they weren't friendly because they had good prices, but I just got sick of their poor attitude and lack of interest in having me as a customer. They would never call me to let me know what was wrong with my car or how much it would cost, or when it would be ready for me to pick it up; that got really old. So, I did some searching around online and came across Fred at "Saab Service Above and Beyond". I've only been here once (today), but I am going to go to him now. He is very friendly and informative and seems honest. I also appreciated that he took a drive with me to listen to my concerns and see if he could get a feel for what my problem might be. Saab Tech would never do this (I've tried). Anyhow, I'm happy about having a friendlier and service-oriented option in the Lincoln Park area for my Saab.
