I know...I know....it is closed.
But so many memories, weekends and business after hour events!
Wandered through the Ala Moana hotel and went down the escalator....and BAM! There it WASN'T....
Still looking inviting with its huge half moon arc....NOTHING inside.
No sign, No inviting lights. No balloons brightly telling you that you are about to have a great night!
Just painted over memories....
All good - at least it was not knocked down and replaced by a high end million dollar condo! hehe.
well, not yet at least....

It was quite a blur thinking back to my first and only time at Rumours. This was a few years back and it was for a party hosted at this nightclub.
I've been to different bars/clubs in my lifetime, Not many but i've been to enough to know what i like and dislike. I personally really liked it. The lights and the whole layout was dope.
It had pretty decent sized dance floor & there's two dancing cages. This happened a few years ago but i remember clearly an elder lady dancing in the cages. OH and i remember seeing a few couples in costumes! It was great seeing everyone was having fun, dancing and not there to be pervs. It was fun.
Great vibes. I've been meaning to go back but the fact that it's closing and i don't have time to visit before the close date, all i'll have is that one memory.
Rumours, you've been great. And i'm just glad to have at least one memory before you have to go. - Jan 22, 2018
Rumours - another iconic site closing, not because of funds, but because they had to, due to new hotel owners not wanting a nightclub in their hotel.
Looks like everyone had the same idea, going one last time to check out rumours before it closes, and it was crowded. My friend had a VIP card, but it still took an hour half to get in for vip members, hotel guests and re-entry. I assume it took twice or 3x as long for the regular line of people that trailed all the way to the street to get in.
Finally entering rumours, the place still looked exactly the same, except they added tv screens to show the song video and announce celebrations.
Memories poured in of decades ago going in my younger days as I watched everyone dance on the dance floor below as well as the upper sides. Even the company that has a woman selling roses was there.
I remember long ago (before some of you were born), early Fridays were throwback 70s until 8pm, and late fridays and all night sat was a regular night full of us young ones, but recently, all sat night is throwback 80s full of people from 40 to, I swear, close to 80, having fun and dancing.
In my young and crazy days it was fun dancing in the cage and on the floor and offered drinks and roses from handsome men, sometimes joining to dance in the cage with us, but now it was reserved by certain aggressive individuals that I dare not join. (PLUS I'm not as young and daring to be up there anymore, but if granny could be up there, i guess it wouldn't matter if I did either).
I remember when I was young, I went on a flashback Friday, and thought the same as you young peeps, seeing all the older decrepit ones dancing, burning my eyes, and never went again, but as time flies so fast, I am now in their shoes, only to find that life is short, and it's the only venue that us older peeps can go to dance, exercise and act crazy and young again. I felt comfortable not being smoshed and surrounded by folks around my age or older, hoping to be as fit and lively when i get as old as i watch the older ones dancing their lives away.
Oh the fun I had going there, and I'm sad to see it close. The fond memories of going with my friends to dance, drink, meet and talk to new people and be amused watching some of the weirdos on the dance floor will stay in my heart.
We parked at ala Moana shopping center parking lot next to Macy's, 2nd floor near the bridge to the hotel as did a lot of cars, and crossed the bridge to the hotel, but park at your own risk because the hotel is not part of the shopping center.

Another Honolulu Icon closes the doors forever.
Romours was one of the last to open to the disco dance club scene era of the big clubs. In the early hours the tourist would be there. In the later hours it was the locals. It was a good time to go clubbing with so many to choose from. Rumours was guaranteed to be included.
Walking in there now, it was much brighter than before. I can actually see everything going on. Music blasting. Cage dancing. Big screens playing the music videos. Drinks flowing so much. Cocktail waitresses gone. Yet, the fun was still there.
We had a good time shuffling on the dance floor, watching our friends getting their groove in the cage, noticing the little games some still played. Can't help but laugh.
Though I haven't been here for a long time, this last visit brought the nastagia home. Gonna miss this landmark.

Ah! Rumours nightclub! Closing down!?!
It's been iconic in the social life of Hawaii for weekend Place-to-go and weekday salsa dancing. I've heard locals say it's like a 'rite of passage' in teenage & young adulthood. It's accessible for tourists. Returning visitors look forward to going back there. For the more seasoned locals, it's a place to go for fun whether it is to meet new or longtime friends, drink or just dance.
Saturday nights have been weekend cardio for some of us. Older adults could enjoy music from yesteryear as well as more current hits. The regulars know each other, if not by name, at least by face. They say hi to each other, dance with each other even if they have their own partners or group of friends. The cage offers such entertainment from week to week.
The ease of getting to Rumours, accessible parking valet or not, offering a sense of safety with the mall security, made it ideal for going out alone or with a group of friends.
The entry fee is moderate and there was the chance to buy long-term passes, avoiding long lines waiting to get inside along with other advantages.
Once inside, the DJ on duty, a favorite being Brandon Naval, played lively music for all tastes till closing time.
There are 2 bars with pleasant bar tenders, some rooms for private parties & various seating arrangements. There are toilets inside the club as well as just outside the entrance in the hotel lobby. The dance floor is large, with 2 cages for dancers to use for their own pleasure. The security officers inside the club are vigilant to maintain safety: no more than 3 in the cage at a time, no drinks on the dance floor, limit excessive physical display & clearing walkways to ease a path for the polite servers.
The downside was the inefficient cooling within the club, especially in the last few months. The heat was often too much with the lack of airconditioners, increasing population, more so since the announcement of closure, and lively music. The couple of large standing fans just could not do justice!
Future plans might favor management but not the Hawaii population. The available alternatives to Rumours seem daunting.
Someone started a petition to Save Rumours & was collecting signatures. Bravo! Some of us would love to keep the tradition going strong.

Oh the days of old..
I'm sure Rumours is to these older people as Pipeline was to me before it got shut down and turned into a gym.. it was my stomping grounds.
Have I stepped in to Rumours at any point of my life besides the common Intermediate School 8th grade banquet? Or a company paid function? Hell no. But, if you haven't heard the news at some point.. they are shutting this place down ending January 2018. Made me super sad considering Hawaii is changing so much and all these places that felt like they would be around forever are closing.
Anyway, I needed to go! And I had to pick the perfect time like my bday :) So I dragged all of my friends to Rumours as a last hoorah!!
10pm on a Saturday night and the line is out the door!! wha? is everyone and their mom here? they must be doing crowd control like Zanzabar used to do and it was normally dead inside. Not the case here.. after waiting 20 mins to get in.. It's fricken raging! Mostly people 50 y/o and up lol this must be what Studio 54 was like back in the 70's lol except way more smaller.. and musty.. and couldn't get a drink to save your life.
We weren't really sure the bar etiquette here.. if there were a line or if a bartender just stops and helps you. There are 2 lines next to the registers so just line up there and they'll take you in order. Pricing was average. $9 for a shot of Patron, $5 Heineken. They switched out the bungee cords on the cages to steel lol I guess too many people were getting freak nasty and fell out haha. Just an assumption.
Bathroom is outside and apparently you could reserve tables and sections. Cover charge is $10. We were trying to grow enough confidence to dance in the cage one last time but there always seemed to be a flock of Senior Citizens crammed in there and probably would have scrapped us for trying to slide in there haha.. It's all love though.. Maybe we weren't drunk enough but we dipped out pretty early. The music started good which lured us In with early 2000's and then once we were in for maybe 20mins it switched to disco and then some stuff you would have heard on VH1 back in the day.
It's been good Rumours. If you get the chance to go, definitely go for the sake of it.. just don't expect too much. - Jan 9, 2018
"...dance like nobody's watchin'..."
--Susanna Clark & Richard Leigh's song, "Come From the Heart"
It was November 2014 or so when Eric B. asked me to cohost an Unofficial Yelp Event with him ...
my first time cohosting a UYE...
Many, many thanks to Eric B.! He was a great partner because he was cool and confident. He told me not to worry about who shows up because the ones who don't join us will be missing out... He was right!
Mahalo to Paul C., Michael. C., Daniel C., Terrance Y., Victoria M., John N., Maggie T., Darci & Terry, Todd & Malia, Maka, Cathy, Janice, and Darin for attending!
Remembering that fun night at the Ala Moana Hotel (entrance is to the right of the reception area)! Seems so long ago...we even had an aftah party!
Right now, I'm feeling a bit sad because I heard that this club will be closing at the end of the month! I'll miss the parties in the private room... and people-watching from the upper level... and the graduation parties...and...
Shall we go one last time?
How about this Saturday (January 13th) at 5pm?
Then we'll have better parking and maybe avoid the cover charge!
Remember that there is a dress code...no shorts, jeans, or flip flops, please!
Let's do it! See you there!
P.S. We need to reschedule since Rumours opens at 9pm on Saturday. - Joey S.Honolulu, HI41910254Jan 7, 2018Updated review
Omg! It was packed tonight! I hate to see this much action knowing they are closing in a few weeks and, at the same time, glad to be a part of the amazingness of the place. I love the dress code for men, I think it brings a class to the men that come here. I was digging the the DJ, as I almost didn't leave when I said I was too. I wanted to keep dancing! I LOVE that they have safety first, no drinks on the dance floor for I have slipped on wet floors and hurt myself and no more than 3 people on the cage. Those cages are pretty small and have 3 people is there is already a lot.
Thank you for the memories Rumours! I wish there was somewhere else like this...if you, the reader, knows a comparable place, let me know. I'm looking for a new rumours!Oct 15, 2011Previous reviewI LOVE rumours! And I'm proud to admit it! I have scoured this city for a good dance floor. Either the dance floor is covered in spilled drinks from stupid ass drunk people or it small as heck!
So the clientele is a little older...at least they know what they want and respect you for knowing that you do too. They play hip hop on Fridays and 80s night on Sat. Both very fun to dance to. Drinks are alright. Would recommend Kimo's bar, (they have two bars and 4 bartenders). Go to the back bar to the left side...He makes um strong...
The regulars are a blast! You can tell they love dancing and having fun. And I really feel safe here with all the bouncers that are actually paying attention.
Make sure if you're a single lady without a good wing man to leave before the lights go up. Guys get a little aggressive and for some reason really believe you are so interested in going home with them... - Jossi M.Ewa Beach, HI397191120Jan 3, 2018
This place was fun while it lasted! It's sad to see it go! Lots of fun memories here with throw backs on songs, good music, especially on Saturdays, and watching people dance in the cages. I'll never forget coming to parties here or watching people of all ages have fun dancing here. Parking was always convenient and free. Loved how there was rarely any drama here compared to other clubs. Genius idea having a club at a hotel .
