Q:
Since Rise has chiropractors and trainers, is it considered a medical setting? In this case, am I expected to tip my massage therapist for ART, which is more rehabilitative/medical than a regular massage?

Highly recommend it for everyone and anyone who wants to lose weight, tone up their body or just have a good workout with an knowledgeable instructor.
All of his exercises were suitable for all fitness levels and never sweated or was challenged so much in a group class before. Thank you so much! Counting days until next Wednesday 6am to take it again! - Jellyfish Z.Oakland, CA46720Nov 29, 2023
Great gym - great variety and setup of weights for lifting, never has felt too crowded (busy, yes, but not overcrowded). Everytime I've gone, there is ALWAYS a person cleaning and space seems well cared for. I feel like and grateful for this facility!

I've been going to Rise ever since I moved to Alameda just a few months ago. When looking for a gym on the East End, there really aren't a ton of options, but of the options available, I felt Rise was the closest option to what I used to go to in the city.
In terms of the gym itself, there's a decent amount of equipment and things are pretty well-spaced out given the crowd at the gym (For reference, I'm speaking only to early mornings on the weekdays and mornings on weekends which are both not very crowded).
From a cleanliness perspective, the gym isn't cleaned all too often and this can be seen on some of the weights, benches, racks, and even the floors themselves (I've never actually seen staff clean the gym). In addition to this, they do not provide towels when working out, so you must bring your own. On a final note, the bathrooms aren't the cleanest (wouldn't recommend using the showers) and there is only a single window to the outside on the ground level which makes it quite dark inside.
All in all, the gym has the equipment that you need, isn't the cleanest inside, but is the best option on the East End given the other options available.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Alex, thank you for taking the time to review our facility.
We have a janitor who is here throughout the day, cleaning the facility for 8 hours a day, as well as later in the afternoons on the weekend. This could be the reason you do not see him, but I assure you we do clean our facility daily. I will be reviewing the points you mentioned above to make sure we are keeping our high standard maintained.
Our locker rooms are originally from
the previous athletic club that was at this location which opened in the 80’s and we have done numerous renovations to bring these locker rooms up to date, however they are still a work in progress. We have plans drawn up to renovate the men’s showers as we are currently renovating the women’s.
Our facility has bright white lights, changed from our soft white bulbs pre-COVID to brighten up the space.
If there are specific issues you are seeing, Please let us know so we can take care of those things in a timely manner. We want to make sure we are keeping up with out members’ expectations. You can always let the front desk know and they will alert me and you can also email me direct at frontdeskrise@gmail.com - Kiki C.East Bay, CA6153156Jun 4, 2023
This review is for Dr. Brandon Fein who has helped me through numerous injuries using ART. He has great knowledge and knows how to talk you through what he's doing and how it's helping, and he has wonderful bedside manners. Unfortunately, I found out he's no longer at Rise, which is incredibly sad since I don't think I'll find anyone as good as him. I wished they did a better job of helping him out and getting him patients since there were too many times that Brandon was sitting idle. Someone this good should be booked solid each time!

These people are fraudulent and deceptive. I had been a regular customer at Rise. I had scheduled a massage, but on the day of, I woke up with a fever. When I tried to call and reschedule, they said they'd could do that but would need to still charge me for the cancellation. No class, stay away!!! Imagine if they spent as much time refuting what actually happened as opposed to doing the right thing by their customers. What a shameful group of people.

Thanks for your feedback. I'd like to point out to Yelp users both the facts of this case, and the reasons for our 24 hour cancellation policy.
In this case, you called us at 5:30 AM to cancel your 9:30AM massage, claiming to have Covid. This is a very late cancellation and it’s impossible for our therapist to fill that spot with such short notice. She deserves to be paid for the time she reserved for you, and I'm quite taken back that you would not want the therapist who has massaged you for years to be paid for her time?
After canceling, you came into our facility with no mask on at 9:30am and demanded to see your therapist whom you had just canceled on. You claimed to have Covid, but clearly either did not actually have Covid, or thought it was ok to spread your Covid in a well populated gym (Yelp users please see pic below). You’ve also subsequently edited your reviews here and on Google to eliminate your claim of having Covid. We believe Yelp users can draw their own conclusions on the reason for that.
Furthermore, you aggressively abused our front desk staff for upholding a very basic policy.
We do not tolerate abuse of our employees nor people placing our members at risk For these reasons, you are not welcome back to our facility. - Emma A.San Francisco, CA0113Nov 9, 2021
This place is just awful. It's incredibly sexist here. The men's locker room are nice, clean, and have a sauna. The women's locker room has no sauna, the floors are disgusting, and the showers don't drain. If you shower in them, the water just slowly fills up around you and is absolutely disgusting.
Despite this I still used this gym for a few months. Eventually I had enough, and I cancelled my account with them. Instead they did a soft cancellation and then started charging me again after 3 months. I paid them for months after this without realizing it. When I caught onto it, they refused to refund me, instead offering me free months of membership. No thanks.Helpful 19Thanks 1Love this 4Oh no 1Business owner information

Hello Emma, thank you for your feedback. We're somewhat perplexed, given that the women's locker room has had a sauna in it since before we moved into this building. It's a lovely dry sauna, lined with red cedar -- folks who have were members of the Alameda Athletic Club (the gym that was here before us) can attest to that. Additionally, our showers have been renovated, and we've added a cold plunge to both men's and women's locker rooms.
We are also unclear on what you mean by a soft cancellation, and welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you. If you'd like to stop by some time, we'd be happy to give you a full tour of our facility including the sauna, and address any outstanding concerns you might have. Take care. - Emily W.San Francisco, CA41464Feb 9, 2022
I love this gym! The staff are always kind and greet you with a smile on their face.
I've seen John for a number of years for bodywork and he knows his stuff. His bodywork sessions have helped me through lots of various aches and pains.
I think John is doing a tremendous job running a great facility during these tough times. He and his staff care a lot about making this gym an open space for all and treating everyone like family!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - Baldwin N.La Puente, CA1877065Nov 27, 2022
Was visiting from SoCal and needed to get my gym fix in. $15 for a day pass and it has all the things you need to get a workout in. Pretty small but has a lot more specialized machines/equipment if you're into powerlifting from deadlift to safety squat bars.

Awesome gym. They have a lot of equipment and the price is reasonable. No long term contracts. You pay on a month to month with no initiation fees. Which works perfect for me since I travel for work. The staff is super friendly. Thank you Rise Bodywork's. I will definitely come back next time we are in alameda for work.

A few years back I went to Rise for chiropractic work due to shoulder blade pain. Dr. Beall worked his magic and I have not had a reoccurrence of the pain since!
I went back recently to try, for the first time, getting a lift and tint on my eyelashes. Felicia is both kind and patient and did a fabulous job. I'll admit I was a little freaked out as I've never done anything to my eyelashes, even using a handheld curling device. My eyelashes turned out so good that the next morning I woke up and caught a glimpse in the mirror, I thought I had left my mascara on. I actually had to stop and think that I didn't put any make-up on the day before.
My only complaint is that I don't live closer to Rise to be able to take advantage of more of the services they offer. This really is an outstanding business that offers so much to their clients.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
