Pretentious & overrated, though they DO have some hard-to-find shit in here.

There is no level of indierock obscuirty nor rock Godliness that could possibly impress the staff. Keith Richards could walk in & snort Pope JP2's ashes off the counter & they'd yawn & tell 'em that some dude in a noiserock band from the Bronx (Brooklyn is SO passe') had come in & snorted Gram Parsons ashes' out of the cleavage of some strung out Suicide Girl last week & even THAT wasn't impressive because FUCK...there's nothing more uncool than people who are trying to be cool.

Anyway, Other Music is VITAL if you're an elitist or into personal anthropological studies.

Best ever, I felt so sad that they already started to close the store when I know this legendary store.

I like the atmosphere, I like the people, and I also like the performance within it. Although I missed a lot of great events in the store, I felt so blessed that I am a part of the parade saying goodbye to OtherMusic.

    Other Music Forever.

This place is exasperating in a mostly good way.

The sound maven at the register is nice enough but really they knew ___ before it was cool and were tired of your kind before you were born.
Everything from drum n bass to dubstep to techno is lumped into an Electronic section.
They sell vinyl but have no listening station?
I wind up scouring the surface of my prospective used record with my worried eyeballs, searching for the scratch that'll render it useless, while calling my friends to see if anyone's even heard of this release. And that sucks. But it's kinda fun.

Do I return because they outlived Tower, Sattelite, Liquid Sky and even the Virgin Megastore in Union Sq, so they've earned that no fucks given attitude? Do I drop my money on a possibly promising release because I have Stockholm syndrome? Or am I just bumming hard because their end is nigh?

Maybe it's because the deep digging and the blind bets are often worth it. I've walked away empty-handed for months on end, and I've skipped out with mint vinyl from Exit Records and V Recordings from one visit. Either way, I also had some new artist names to check out - and although the record probably won't be there when I return, my knowledge has expanded and that's what's up.

I've had great luck when I've stumbled across their booth at a record fair, and I hope I'll still see them around. But, like every other sound-obsessed cat in town, I'm bummed that their store is closing, and I recommend you check it before it's shut down for good.

Let your fingers do the searchin.

You remember the good old days that you would pull that vinyl record and just play it. Hear that slight scratch and boom the beautiful melody begins. What you know about this, homie? You all about your MP3, eh.

Come to this place and get some Barry White. In addition, get some good wine. Call your partner and say,"is on!" In the bedroom, you have to do the old two step... Slide to the left and kiss your partner on cheek. Spin around and pop that vinyl record onto that old fashion turntable.

Your lover will ask you the following, "where you got that vinyl from and who is that guy with that deep voice... Oh my god"... Just say, in a deep voice, the 'Other Music' and that man is Barry! Yelpers, his music will get you busy for a few hours, so if you cannot handle it. Put on some, New Kids on The Block instead.

Seriously, I love this place, because you hardly find any stores available that carry vinyl records. This place have been opened for 18 years and staying strong.

Do not know what to buy? Do not worry, because the reps will assist you on your purchase and will never push you away.

The good old days; I love this store and hope you do too.

Quite possibly one of the very best record shops I have ever shopped at! Incredible inventory of obscure albums and a wonderfully informed and helpful staff. My only regret is not purchasing tickets to PORTISHEAD @ Roseland when I had the opportunity :(

I really love this record store -- it seems that they specialize in obscure and esoteric music selections (mostly on CD, their vinyl collection is rather limited), and for me that's a very very good thing.

A few years ago when I was getting to know the music of Morton Feldman, I was seeking out performances on the "Hat[now]Art" label which could only be found at great expense through importing, but somehow as if by magic I found many of them (e.g. For Samuel Beckett, For Philip Guston, For Bunita Marcus, Crippled Symmetry, Why Patterns, Four Generations, String Quartet, String Quartet 2, Clarinet & String Quartet, Violin & String Quartet) here at surprisingly affordable prices -- I could have them immediately, without having to wait forever for them to be shipped from God-only-knows-where, AND I saved money on each and every one of them!

Tonight I came here for a very small and intimate gathering of people collected together to enjoy a live performance of Diplo and Switch, promoting their new album (under the guise "Major Lazer")... It was awesome -- I was a little too exhausted from a very long weekend of drinking and dancing and carrying-on to really get my groove on -- but, again, it was AWESOME -- I'm really loving my life these days, although I wish I could get just a little more sleep.

The staff here is extremely knowledgeable and informative but never ever condescending or alienating... I don't come here very often, I used to frequent the beautiful classical music selection at Lincoln Center Tower Records, but unfortunately that is no longer an option, so I usually just buy things on Amazon -- but after tonight's experience (Switch, my absolute favorite DJ, shook my hand and signed my poster and my CD) I'll be back very soon, perhaps even frequently -- especially considering the fact that the white-boards listing the staff's current favorite albums are so extensive and specific -- I look to these for guidance.

Switch + Diplo = Major Lazer -- Private Performance!

Closest kin to Aquarius Records in San Francsico, small but eclectic....a little too hip and over curated. Places like these offer a certain lack of discovery.

    Extra points for surivin' tho.

I'm going to be honest: a large part of this rating is due to sentimentality. Other Music is one of a dying breed, the music store. This feeling is augmented by the fact that it is across the street from where Tower Records used to be. (Let us have a moment of silence for the loss of that Village institution...)

And there is something about browsing through albums, physically holding them in your hand, and checking out the cover art. Downloading music is just not the same as hanging out at an actual bricks & mortar store.

I have truly learned about other music at Other Music. I'd ask about what they were playing and discover a new group or solo musician. In addition to indie/alternative music, they also have a selection of African and Latin music. If you look, you may find a diamond in the rough in their used CD section.

On the negative side, the place is small. Their selection is impressive, but limited. Also, if you are looking for the latest pop album, Other Music is not the place to go.

The people who work there are nice and informative.

It's a great place to hang out and listen to some great tunes.

I was on my way to the Merchant's House Museum, and even though I study GIS and analyze maps on a daily basis, still managed to make a wrong turn. But this wrong turn showed me another side of New York City history, when you could purchase music, with other people, while wearing pants.

Other Music is a small record store on an East Village side street that boasts an AMAZING collection of some great albums. My music taste can be described as quite different, and when I recognized the names available on the shelves, I was ecstatic. This is a record store that knows that Prefab Sprout existed, and that in itself is worth the trip.

    Excellent prices too.

Other music has a really cool, indie-alternative selection of records. It has a wide range selection of vinyls, especially from new indie bands, all of those which we've heard of somewhere at Coachella or Pitchfork but thought were a joke. Well, you can find them here.
The music playing was loud and of course, from a band I had never even heard of. Which is cool. They didn't have as much CDs as I would have liked, but they sure had their good share. I couldn't find any Unknown Mortal Orchestra, though. That's sad.
The people who worked there were very kind and helpful. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but I overheard a situation going on with another guy who wanted one particular record and everyone there made sure he could get it by Saturday. Cool record shop employees are the best.
The cheap section had records which I had never even seen in my life, mostly from experimental and electronic groups. I found two Maximo Park records for 3 bucks each and I bought them for 12 each on Amazon. Damn! But there weren't many good deals, for the average, music lover person. To find a good CD deal you needed to achieve the ultra music geek status, and I'm not there yet.
I ended up buying three records for their full price. It took me a while to decide if whether to buy them or not, but hey-we all do stupid things for our favorite band, right?

Went to Other Music to a signing of my favorite band, Interpol, and had a great time. I bought the band's cd, and noticed their pretty vast vinyl selection and even better prices. The staff was super friendly and the area is nice, right near NYU.

I met my favorite band, service was quite speedy, and the prices were more than reasonable. What's not to love?
