Yakiniku is the Japanese word for Japanese BBQ. The literal translation is Yaki=Grill , Niku=Meat. Japanese BBQ has become widely popular in Japan for casual or business meetings to all-out celebrations. Niwa Japanese BBQ focuses on the subtleties of Japanese cuisine and utilizes new technology for roaster tables. Our down-draft roasters allow for the smoke and smells typically associated with yakiniku to be taken away immediately at the table.

The grilling tables are like foodie playgrounds, where your inner chef gets a black belt in barbecue karate.
You're basically the BBQ maestro, armed with tongs and a hunger for greatness. It's like culinary UFC - grill marks instead of knockout punches. The meats? They melt in your mouth like a symphony of deliciousness. I felt like a samurai of soy sauce, wielding my chopsticks with precision.
The ambiance? It's like if Tokyo and Deep Ellum had a love child. And the sauces? Well, let's just say they're the saucy sidekicks making every bite a superhero moment.

Japanese BBQ in Deep Ellum - great location for those around the downtown Dallas area.
I recommend making a reservation and taking an Uber if you are visiting over a weekend.
Price for the meat is a bit high, but given the location it is expected. Marinated meats were hit or miss - some had great flavor, others lacked any flavor at all and would have benefit from either salt or MSG.
Service unfortunately was not great - we had gotten our meats quickly, but after that when he had requested extra sides/drinks service was nowhere to be found. We had to flag down other wait staff to get our additional food. It was upsetting towards the end as we were getting better service from staff checking in on us from other tables then our primary wait staff member. Given the price and overall quality of the meal, we may not try this location again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 6, 2024
This was simply AMAZING. I didn't really know what to expect coming in but I was blown away. Everything from appetizers to meats was delicious.
We started with some appetizers: edamame, kimchi, fried chicken, and shishito peppers and pork belly. The kimchi was definitely my favorite - it was super fresh and good spice to it. The fried chicken was also a table favorite with great dipping sauces. The pork belly in the shishito peppers was delicious and paired well with the Japanese dipping sauce they provided. We also tried their cocktails which were well priced and very flavorful (really liked the lychee cocktail!).
For the mains we ordered 3 meats (hanging tender, short rib, Miso Skirt), 1 chicken, 3 veggies (mushrooms, broccoli, and asparagus) for 6 people and I think that was just enough (maybe even a tad bit too little if you're coming really hungry). The meat quality was really good with the hanging tender being my favorite cut (with the miso skirt a close second). The broccoli was also a crowd favorite and came pre-seasoned. The Japanese sauce (middle one) was MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. I could probably drink the stuff . The yuzu and mustard sauce were also great with the miso skirt and short rib!
Overall the staff was super friendly giving us great recommendations on what to order for our group to meet dietary restrictions and portions. The restaurant was also very cozy with lots of seating and modern decor (with some cute photo opportunities).Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Greg H.DeSoto, TX12715Apr 3, 2024
What is there to say or complain about? You order it. You cook it yourself so if you don't like it then that is on you! All kidding aside we enjoyed our dinner. I love to cook and it was really fun grilling your own meats. We enjoyed our dining and grilling experience and I look forward to returning to Niwa

Niwa is my fav dining in Deep Ellum! I was brought here by friends and immediately noticed the ventilation is great, no smelling like smoke when you leave.
Ribeye cap is always out, because it's the best one! Drink menu has exquisite cocktails.
Service is hit or miss.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - jonathan p.Brea, CA303543Apr 13, 2024

This was my first time in the downtown Dallas area and was not disappointed by this restaurant selection. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, and the service was excellent as well. The waiters were super friendly with us as we explored the menu, and gave us a ton of suggestions on how much to order and what specifically to get.
The food itself was great - we loved all of the meats that we ended up trying, including the beef tongue which was probably my favorite. The sides we ordered were very tasty as well, including the karate, gyoza, and more!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - May 10, 2023
We went here for our anniversary as it was on a Tuesday and Happy Hour. This place is in a not so nice neighborhood, but they have paid parking. We were lucky and found parking near the meters. You can pay quarters or use your smart phone and pay by credit card. Parking was really cheap as we were there we 2 hours and 30 minutes and we paid $1.85 total.
I would suggest coming when they open as it does get packed which I was surprised especially on a weekday, but it was happy hour.
For happy hour the meats are half price off and drinks are discounted, but not the appetizers. We got the $55 dollar platter which means you get to try all 10 meats. Their menu is based off of a QR code. You can also substitute meats as well. The ironic part is it cost the same even if you ordered individually
1. Shrimp
2. Chicken Breast
3. Chicken Thigh
4. Sirloin Steak
5. Hanger Steak
6. Ribeye
7. New York Steak
8. Pork Belly
9. Short rib
10. Skirt
We skipped out on the shrimp and chicken breast and got more pork belly and short rib.
We ordered the lettuce wrap, HANETSUKI-GYOZA KARAAGE, sweet corn and for dessert PANNA COTTA.
The meats do come out and they have nice papers to tell you how long you should cook it and the type of meat. You also get free rice and sauce with your meal.
What I would skip is the New York Steak and the Sirloin as they were tough. I would get the rest as all were really juicy and I was impressed. What meats that stood out was the skirt and short rib as it melted in your mouth.
Service was awesome as the servers were very attentive and they use a robot to deliver the food which is nice. The place is very upscale as well.
For the appetizers, we like the karraage, sweet corn and Gyoza and would recommend. The karraage comes out really hot, so be careful. The panna cotta was really good and I wanted another one.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 7, 2023
I always enjoy visiting Niwa for the atmosphere and some exceptional Japanese bbq. The restaurant is very clean, you have plenty of space between tables, and the overall aesthetic is very pleasing.
The cuts of meat and options on the menu are quality. We've jumped around with appetizers, sides, etc and haven't been disappointed by a single item.
The service is always exceptional, employees are kind, inviting and always happy to help!
Highly recommend!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 7, 2023
Moving to downtown Dallas just a year ago, I can say Niwa is our favorite date night restaurant. The food here is so good. How can raw food be good? It's incredibly well seasoned, good marinades/sauces and quality cuts.
We normally visit for Tuesday happy hour. This is the only day of the week they offer some smaller portions of meat at reduced prices as well as drink specials.
Meat Day (the 29th of the month) is also a fun day to go. They offer a special platter of pre-chosen meat. Reservations book really fast for this day.
Some of our favorite things to get are the miso marinated outside skirt, shrimp and pork jowl. On a recent visit we tried the chicken thigh and it was so tender. There really is no going wrong on what to get (just make sure to try that outside skirt!)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
