Well,I am one of the ones who is truly sadden to hear that this place will be closing.
I know places can't be open forever, and this place has been around as long as I have been in NM. The first time I went, was in the beautiful home restaurant, I recently moved from South Carolina to NM so I was ready to get my Southern BBQ fix. It was a memory I will always hold dear. Place was beautiful, busy, friendly and the food was perfect.
Every state has their known food places for authenticity. NM is know for their Hispanic/Mexican food....and being that I just came to NM from South Carolina, I was so happy to have found good southern BBQ!
I really hope they do continue to cater and have a food truck to show all of NM what good southern bbq & sides should taste like.
I did recently go and have their food once again. As I remembered.....it is delicious! Clean, fast and friendly service.
Please go by and show your support and let them know they would be truly missed if they fully closed.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Greg G.North Hollywood, Los Angeles, CAJan 17, 2024
Very saucy. Maybe it's my taste. I love barbecue when it's absolutely delicious even without being slathered in sauce. Everything here has sauce on it. The people that run this place are absolutely amazing. And it has been around for over 65 years. I really wanted to love it. oh well.

Mr. Powdrell's is a long-time Albuquerque Institution. I have very fond childhood memories of grabbing a bbq sandwich with my parents and my grandparents and the food today still tastes as good as it did then.
Powdrells is Texas-style BBQ, so expect a tangy resold sauce and slow-cooked meats. The brisket is very tender, but the pork steaks the show it's so tender and flavorful. The red sauce pairs with it perfectly. And the ribs are pretty darn good, too, but not as consistent as the other meats.
They also make a Rocki' Po Boy, which incorporates all the meats on a bun. It's delicious, but massive. You can order a half.
They have great sides as well. Mac and Cheese, collards, beans, cole slaw, and onion rings. I like the collards, but lately I've been getting the onion rings and dipping them in a side of sauce.
The family is old school Albuquerque. They are always generous to the schools and the community. I love that they are still open and heartily support the restaurant!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Aug 19, 2020
Dear Yelpies, It's been awhile since we sat down for our weekly chat. Imagine, it's a bloody hot dry day...you feel alone on a planet gone half mad...you need a meal that will shake off all your blues and put a smile back on your face....Mr. Powdrell's BBQ House to the rescue. We called in our order for: a pound/plus of Brisket/BBQ Sauce, Corn on the Cob, Cole Slaw and Sweet Potato Fries (enough for two hearty appetites...). Easy, safe and very friendly service, to pu our chow. Each juicy bite brought screams of joy and relief from this worldz chaos. Ladies and Gents, Mr. Powdrell's Rocks!!

Great bbq! Reminded me of my grandfather's bbq back in Ft. Worth, TX. Had the ribs and brisket...smoked how meat is supposed to be smoked. The potato salad and fried okra were out of sight!
Would definitely recommend this over any que in the city!!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bee C.Albuquerque, NM288165668Jun 3, 2020
Review during COVID- 19: My friend and I got a to-go order or turkey and brisket with sides of corn bread, mashed potatoes, collard greens, coleslaw, and beans and an order of fries zucchini. We opened the boxes and the foods looked great! The cornbread in the other hand looked like pancakes or hot cakes - didn't expect that. The turkey was good and the brisket was lean. We agreed that the mashed potatoes and the collard greens were the winning sides. The beans has a taste of red chiles in it which I didn't like. The coleslaw was okay, nothing to write home about.
The most disappointing item of all was the fried zucchini. We bit into it and it was hollow inside. Not sure what's going on -- either the zucchini was cut too thin or fried too long but basically the zucchini was disintegrated.
The portions were reasonable. We were full by the end of the meal.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jul 23, 2020
Reviewed during COVID-19.
We ordered by phone, then went to pick it up. One benefit of ordering over the phone is that some items that some items that sell out quickly (like turkey drumsticks) aren't available for online ordering. We were able to get one of those.
The barbecue is delicious. I had a 2-meat platter, with beef brisket and pork. It was flavorful, and the barbecue sauce was sweet and a little hot, but not very hot.
I had the potato salad and coleslaw, and my wife had the black-eyed peas, and collard greens. My salads were well seasoned, and not over done. A lot of times, coleslaw is veritably swimming in dressing. This was lightly dressed.
The Texas toast was amazing. Not dry, not fluffy. Crispy, firm almost meaty, toast. I was impressed.
The drumstick is in the fridge for tomorrow. I am so looking for it.

I mean... really. I can't imagine giving Powdrell's less than five stars. The food is LEGIT. My father who was raised in ABQ, and retired here 15 years ago has somehow never eaten at Powdrell's, so we got some as takeout to spice up a ho-hum Thursday night.
It wasn't cheap. But it was worth it. We ordered two item plates for me and the husband, and got a fish sandwich (don't ask. The heart wants what it wants) for my dad. After a ruthless un-air conditioned 15 minute wait on the hottest afternoon of the year (bless the staff who have to work there) I picked it all up plus some bones for the four legged family members.
When I got home, there was not a lot of talking and a whole lot of chewing. My dad proclaimed it the best sandwich he'd ever had. And the barbecue (beef brisket, sausage, and turkey) was amazing. The sides were delicious too.
There's a reason Powdrell's is revered. They know their barbecue. Go get some already.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 19, 2020

Supporting local restaurants.
I had a so so experience. The food wasn't that great. However, when I arrived the food was ready and my order was complete! I think they could use more staff. Poor girl in the front was taking call in orders and dealing with people walking in...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
