Mooncake Foods moved to the new location which is close to the old one with more seats and wider space. The staff was attentive and served everything quickly.
I had their Spicy Thai Steak Salad with dressing on the side. The portion was huge and I can have it for lunch and dinner. The steak was cooked tender and well flavored. There was also a great variety of green in my salad.
Only complaint is they don't take credit cards, cash or venmo only.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 288346865Jul 25, 2018
I've worked in the SoHo area for over 4 years now and I can't believe it's taken me this long to review Mooncakes.
I've actually never been inside the storefront but I always order lunch/dinner on seamless. Service is almost always super fast and rarely do they mix up my order (which is bound to happen over 4 years). I usually get the sliced steak plate, which comes with a good amount of steak covered in green sauce, over a bed of rice (white or brown) and a side salad. Pretty solid meal for $14! They make pretty good rolls here and I also love their lime Rickey. One of the best go-to places in the area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 3, 2019
My friend and I each paid $19 for a Thai steak salad and we both left hungry. I don't think that's acceptable. It's a simple place that caters to the locals who work in the area, so they do have their regulars. However, I really don't think the dish, while tasty, was worth it and I left disappointed.
The main lady running the place is really sweet, but the waitress was very slow to take our order and bring our check. They should hire another person to keep up with the lunch rush.
I want my money back!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 1 - Phyllis Q.Flushing, NY371939Aug 9, 2019
I have never thrown away food due to inedibility. After spending $120 in takeout, we threw out nearly half of the items as they were too salty, felt like salt was poured directly in my mouth. The crawfish dumplings, both in soup and non-soup versions were the saltiest things I have ever tasted in my life.
The cold jicama spring rolls were also disgustingly salty and wrapped in unfried egg roll wrappers - is that normal?
Of the food that was edible, it was not good enough to redeem the experience had.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 163140267Oct 9, 2019
Have been dining here for lunch for years now and it never disappoints. They just moved around the corner from original location and business is booming. Always great service and the food comes out fast. I usually get the same thing any time it's cold and rainy out and that is the wonton soup with noodles and extra green hot sauce on the side. You can tell everything is freshly prepared. Cash only.

Loved it here.
The space is pretty small, so you may want to call ahead but it was relatively empty on a Monday night when I went.
They only have been and wine, so don't expect to get cocktails. The prices are good, so my friend and I tried the crawfish dumplings, the Vietnamese spring rolls, and split the salmon plate.
While not horrible, I wished the spring rolls were better. I don't know what exactly my issue was, but I just wanted them to be better. The dipping sauce they were served with was tasty. The crawfish dumplings are a must try. They, too are accompanied by a awesome dipping sauce. The salmon was well cooked, so it was juicy but the sauce had a strong, sharp taste that I wasn't a huge fan of. The side of sticky rice was yummy.
I'd definitely go back and try other menu items. The food came quick and the staff was nice. Oh, they don't take credit. Only cash and Venmo so my sure your phone is chargedHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 141782177May 29, 2017
OK, so this place can be a little hit and miss if you just shotgun on the menu, but you will easily get a 5 STAR experience if you stick with their best dishes below:
1) Sliced Steak with Cilantro & Ginger Chimichurri (darn good, especially if you like cilantro)
2) Octopus & Spinach Noodles (freaking insanely good)
Octopus and spinach noodles sounds like an alien (the extraterrestrial variety) came up with it, and may be it is why it's out of this world, but it's absolutely my favorite dish in New York City. I didn't even consider getting it the first dozen or so times I went, but my coworker Ken insists that I try it. I was so resistant that he just ordered it for me one day and say eat it - seriously, blew me out of the water.
Now, on to the service (which isn't part of the rating), but I feel like I should mention this. If you are expecting shitty, slow Chinese restaurant service, you will be sourly disappointed. The waitresses have always been amazingly friendly and the food always comes out super duper inhumanly fast, but totally fresh.
I would stay away from the wontons, although the clear broth is really lovely on a cold winter day or if you're under the weather. In fact, when I was sick one day, they gave me a take away bowl of just the broth (on the house) and that really did the trick in making me feel so so much better.
Apparently they have two other locations... never been to any others. Gotta say, the Soho location really isn't meant for people to eat in... super cramped and quite uninviting, but I like the staff enough to tolerate the space and do occasionally eat in when I need to get away from the office.
All in all, highly recommend my two go to dishes. You will not be disappointed.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 4793611588Oct 18, 2016
Went here on a whim as my friend and I were in the neighborhood and didn't want something too expensive. The name is cute although I didn't see any cake or moon food on the menu!
This place is a small old diner looking place. It still has the counter and round seats in front, with a few smaller tables squeezed around the place. It was very quiet when we got there, which was probably around 8pm on a Friday so I was rather surprised. It was nice to sit down right away though.
The menu is not large but has a good variety of options for apps and main dishes. We decided to go with the crawfish dumplings, since it was something new to us. Very delicious! For my entree I had the brown rice and veggies with Korean chili sauce. This definitely needed a lot of sauce as it was very plain without it. I liked how there was also tofu in the dish for some protein! I did have a taste of the ribs and it was really good.
Service was decent and the food came out very fast, almost too fast? Might come back here again if I'm in the area but wouldn't go out of my way.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 3, 2018
The soba was really good! But they still messed up our online order. I ordered tofu with soba (buckwheat) noodles salad, because I'm vegan, but I got soba with chicken, and my friend put in CAPS that she doesn't want cilantro in her food and still got cilantro, so both of us spent some considerable time taking out bits and pieces we don't want. We'll try again.

Other reviews are right about the smoke, but I'm not really affected by it.
They might need to up the ventilation because I only spot only 1 of them on but rent in NYC is expensive so I understand. I came here two times in different months and the first time there was no smoke. When you sit in for a while you don't notice it that much.
The food is good and it's a little different than the usual Vietnamese food in Chinatown.
I like the salmon based items on the menu more than the steak based items.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
