Attended the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth. Although I have been here before it was way different attending an event such as this.
The rebels clash with the greatest army of the world and although the battle was fought to a draw, (both sides claimed a victory) it will live on in our history anyway. Approximately 360 casualties on both sides.
The reenactment of this historic day in American history is quite involved and a great deal of effort obviously goes into it. American and British troops set up camp and actually spend the night in tents. Replicas of the camps are pretty thorough including blacksmiths, carpenters, sutlers, etc.
The troops march in formation prior to the mock battle and uniforms, rifles, gear are all authentic. Finally the colonists meet the red coats on the battlefield. Advances and retreats and a lot of black powder charges culminate in this historic clash.
Even if you miss this event, the Park is a very nice place to visit year round.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Dec 7, 2023
What a gorgeous little activity we did today. Such a detailed museum with lots of information about the battle. There's a lovely man who knows everything about the battle and a movie. You unfortunately can't take photos inside.
I definitely recommend it if you come here!

Just 2.5 miles from downtown Freehold off Rt. 33, it was here where the largest field artillery duel of the American Revolutionary War took place, and the British army took a major setback. Growing up in Freehold, I have visited the park numerous times, including the annual reenactments which not surprisingly marked an undeletable part of my childhood memory.
I stopped by here for a nice stroll after a good meal when I visited my parents recently. The statue of General Von Steuben is new, and I didn't remember the small playground. But the park was still as serene and peaceful as I remembered. There is a nice short 3/4 mile loop trail that passes through the visitor center and the area that overlooks the battlefield. There are other longer trails which I used to bike on, but I'd say the loop is more of the highlight.
The visitor center is well kept, and the restroom is current and clean. Staff were very friendly. Opens at 9 am.Helpful 26Thanks 0Love this 26Oh no 0 - Oct 13, 2022
Went hiking here on our week off. I haven't been here in ages if forgotten how massive this park is. We brought our 2 dogs to enjoy the lovely fall weather. We hiked for about 2-3 hours over a bridge and through some corn fields. Great place for hiking or biking to enjoy nature.
This could definitely been a while day hike. Slight hills but overall, mostly flat.
On the 3rd weekend of June, they do a revolutionary was reenactment which I'm hoping to catch next year. There is also a visitors center with a museum inside.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 19, 2020
One of the largest battles of the American Revolution took place in the fields and forests that now make up Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The park encompasses a playground for the kids, trails for light hiking and bicycle riding, picnic areas, a restored Revolutionary War farmhouse and a visitors center.
There is also the Battle of Monmouth Reenactment which is an annual event held each June at the park. Children can also participate in the cannon and musket drill that day. A treat for the young and old.
Note: There are stations with plastic bags for the owners to pick up your furry babies poo. There are plenty of garbage bins for you to throw it away.Helpful 73Thanks 0Love this 80Oh no 0 - Kris F.Chicago, IL2398817Feb 17, 2023
This is an excellently maintained historic site. The museum has unique artifacts that I've not seen at other similar museums. Really well done exhibits for such a small space. Sadly, they don't allow photos in the museum. I don't understand the purpose. They also aren't on instagram. It makes sense to allow us to take photos and then allow us to tag them. History is for everyone, even those who can't get to the museum. They should be willing to allow us to share their great work with everyone else.

Isn't America great? You're damn right it is. You could make the argument that this battlefield is the birthplace of a Nation. It was here that Washington and his rag tag army held their own with the greatest army on the planet. It was hot. It was bloody. Fortunately, you don't have to deal with any of that.
This corner of the battlefield has a little museum to explain why went down here. There are period correct displays and artifacts found on the grounds. It's interesting if you're into history. If not, there are nice trails to walk or ride your bike. Regardless, it's a quiet, peaceful place to stop by to reflect or picnic. The park is clean, free, and there usually aren't a lot of people around.
If you have little ones, the hill here is awesome when it snows! Even if you don't have little ones, grab your sled and take a ride! Good times.
The longest jourey begins with the first step. The first steps that made America the greatest country on the planet happened right here. Be respectful and appreciate the very freedom those rag tag soldiers fought for so many years ago. God bless you.
And may God bless America.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Oct 25, 2020
Today my partner and I wanted to kill two birds with one stone by seeing some fall foliage and history and came to this place. This park is famous for the Battle of Monmouth which took place on June 28, 1778. One of the largest battles during American Revolution took place here where General Washington and his troops fought the British Army under General Clinton. Molly Pitcher brought water to the soldiers. Due to COVID, the visitor center was closed. Besides the history, this park is a great place to have a picnic, walk, ride a bike, or just relax. The paths themselves are not all paved or clearly marked and may have trespassed a bit in the apple orchard (Battleview Orchards) alongside part of the park. In the same vicinity, one of the nearby farms had a pumpkin patch where patrons could pick their own which was a photo moment. So if you like hiking and/or history, we highly recommend visiting here.

I always have a nice time here. The park offers lots of trails for walking, hiking, and biking, a playground, and plenty of shaded areas for relaxing or picnicking. Its beautiful all year long but fall is probably my favorite time to come. Monmouth Battlefield State Park even has a small museum with neat artifacts that talks about what happened at the Battle of Monmouth. Awesome for history buffs or just for people who enjoy learning. The hill to get down to the actual battlefield is pretty steep but is great exercise. Not far from a lot of great restaurants in Freehold and Manalapan too, which is a plus if you need a place to eat before or after!

I love to go hiking, as does my dog, so I am always looking for someplace new to go. Went for a long walk with he & hubby on a hot summer day. Although I thought the park looked great & was well maintained (for the most part) I was disappointed in the length of the trails. None we found were very long.
In addition I thought the trail marking could have been clearer, as I noted another yelper also commented on. At one point we ended up walking down a hill with trimmed grass, but higher than I want to walk in. My husband & I both ended up with chigger bites after the hike.
I will return & see if I missed any longer trails but will make sure it's during cooler weather. And I'll make sure my legs are covered!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
